Title: #$%&ing skunk
Post by: sebek556 on July 02, 2012, 11:47:32 PM
:bash: its been a two month war now with this freakin' skunk, and I swear by the time I move into my new house it will be dead, might even skin it and mount it, for this skunk is a very worthy opponent. I think it is trap savvy because every trick I can think of is not working for him. peanut butter nope, chicken nope, hot dog nope, cat food nope, fresh fish nope, tuna fish nope. I have caught about every damn cat in the neighbor hood, but not this stinky foe. He has killed two of my wife's ducks, sprayed my truck, and just been a pain in the  :ass: . Now we have 14 ducklings so he is by about every night, I am about ready to dig out my gillie suit go roll in the mud and lay out in the field and wait for him to show, but the damn horses will probably blow my cover. :bash:

I know a 10-year-old that could get him!  He's killed everything for 600 yards around his house.  :chuckle:

I have thought about using a duckling as bait, but at 2 weeks old I think it would be a death sentence for on to stick it outside all night by itself. The only full grown duck we have left is momma, and to go near her since the drakes were killed and the ducklings hatch you want one of those dog bite suits  :chuckle:

Put out a coon set.  That seemed to always work for me.  Oh do I hate those little demon spawn.

another little trick is to put a leg hold down and hang some bait about 8 inches above it, coons and skunks seem to lose their senses when they are trying to decipher how to get at the bait, they get to dancing around on their hind legs and snaparooney, you gottem...

The leg hold trap and elevated bait is a good suggestion. But get the permit for the trap first. Make sure the little duckies can't get to the same spot.

kicked another cat out, and reset all of the traps. trap 1 sardines, trap 2 Vienna sausages, trap 3 the works Vienna sausages, tuna fish, chicken, cat food, and peanut butter. Now if I can just keep the damn neighbor's cats out should be ok. If not I'll have cat pelts for sale real cheap  :chuckle: :chuckle:

Michelle how much for a skunk mount where it is laughing at you? cause that's what this one seems to be doing..... :bash:

Funny you should say that--when I was a kid, an old Italian guy always use to tell me if I ever got a bunch of Starlings, to save them for him.  I asked why he wanted them, and he said: "To eat them!  They're delicious!"

I have done this for a living, catching skunks.  Bait the trap with vanilla wafers, skunks LOVE them, cats rarely go for them unless they are starving and rarely more than once.  Vanilla wafers is the answer.  The hanging bait over a leghold is illegal and you have a very good chance at catching nothing, or a bird of prey or an owl.  Vanilla wafers and or a couple of the small marshmellows, deadly on skunks and coons.  Make sure you cover your trap, once he's caught, if the trap is covered you can walk up, pick up the trap and put it in your truck and take it somewhere to dispatch, either drown it or release is downwind and shoot it.  Good luck!!

machias, i dont mean to tell you your business but if you get a permit it is legal to use a leg hold, back in the day when it was legal i caught tons of coons with a hanging bait, i never once caught a bird of prey, i live on the westside so are sets a rarely in the open. but it sounds like your vanilla wafers and a live trap might just work for him, does a guy have to have a permit to use live traps, what if its a nuissance animal like this poor dude is dealing with?

Nope, no permit needed.  I'm fully aware of the permit process, I have done it several times and would still not recommend it.  First time I ever did the bait hanging over a leghold, I was 16.  I came back the next day and heard this loud popping sound, it was a great horned owl with a high ankle catch.  He was popping his beak....none too happy.  I also would never try that set if I there was a chance I was going to snag a skunk, makes for a very messy release/dispatch.  Lots of ways to catch different species, just trying to pass along a way so he does not catch the neighbors cat in a leghold or a skunk who will spray all over the area he's trapping.

Machias is right--don't use a leghold trap.  I did that years ago at my grandparent's farm.  They were throwing the garbage into the pig pen, and a Skunk was frequenting the delectables.  I got him in a leghold trap and shot him with grandpa's 12 gage.  The place smelled like skunk for months after!  :bdid:

oh i hear ya now, sorry took me awhile to catch on, yeah leg hold would be a bad plan if he is trying to keep the stench down, maybe a snare would be better, the problem with a live trap is how do you approach it without getn sprayed, i have never caught one in a live trap, i quit trappn when we lost are rights to use leg holds, i did however build a 3ftx4ftx5ft live trap that i am gonna catch this cougar that has been buggin the crap outta me, i set it out towards the end of march just to see how she worked and i caught a crow, so this winter she will go out to the woods and catch me some bobcats or hopefully this pain in the butt cougar..

I put the trap in either a cardboard box or wrap it in a tarp.  You can just walk up, pick it up and put it in your truck and drive to an area where you can dispatch him.  I have transported probably 400 skunks this way and never had one spray in the truck.  Just treat it like bomb disposal and you'll be good.  :)

I've got a trap much like this one - notice the small hole on the bottom of the trap?  It fits a garden hose perfectly
(http://fourshrops.files.wordpress.com/2008/07/s43000101.jpg)

This trap probably has 100 skunks dead and it's never caught a cat. I fill it with water from a hose and wait until the scratching and clawing ends then a minute or so more.  No stink, the skunks don't spray or being in water I dunno but they don't stink.

I use marshmallows, the big fat marshmallows and they hang from a J hook inside the trap.

If I wanted to catch cats I'd use a chicken wing - but there is no cat problem here.

I would be surprised if it was the only one.

Nice trap KFhunter, I purchased 4 of the PVC skunk traps last year and love them!!  Nice and compact little traps that keeps them from spraying.

I think he's referring to the traps that are sold by the Fur Harvester's Trading Post.  You can order them online at www.fntpost.com (http://www.fntpost.com)

machias you were right, it had a friend. Caught up with the friend last night, it made it over to the neighbors field before I caught up with it. but a well place pellet from my sons 22cal Benjamin trail xp took care of that, and the best part is the stank is at their place  :chuckle: hope the druggies enjoy the smell. two victories in one.

I don't have any 1st hand experience with the PVC tube type traps - but I imagine they would work great.

The trap I posted a pic of is a "critter getter" it is made with galvanized tin sheet metal and works well.  Only thing I could complain about is you gotta keep the door slides and whatnot in pretty good shape.  I wouldnt imagine it'd do well on a commercial bang around the back of the truck with 30 other traps.  for a home owner it is very good and will trap a ton of skunks and you won't get squirted.  I really like the garden hose hole at the bottom I tip the trap up on its end "door side up" and just fill it up and leave the hose run a good while then open the door and dump out the contents.

my trap has a lot of skunks to its credit over a 10 year period.   The trap was purchased at the local feed lot store - not sure if it is online.

My dog found a skunk in my yard today  :chuckle:

lucky I heard the skunk stamping its feet so I knew it wasn't just a chipmunk and got the dog away.

I got a trail camera not being used, maybe I'll do a little vid and such of traping this skunk, should be fun huh?

Title: Re: #$%&ing skunk
Post by: KFhunter on July 12, 2012, 08:34:18 PM
No details as of yet,  I got a pile of old lumber behind a garden tool shed and the dog was sniffing around in there then got all excited like she was birdy.  I thought well there probably was a chipmunk in there until I heard the stamping of the skunks feet.

I was like oh crap, and quickly got the dog away before all hell broke loose.  I carefully peeked in the hole and seen the skunks head and it was lunging forward and stamping its feet.

So I got the wife picking up marshmallows tonight and I'll get the game camera out and set it to video and see if we can watch the skunk get trapped

My homemade trap is similar, except the door is triggered by the floor.  When the critter walks in and goes over center on the floor--wham!  The door drops.

I dunno where my skunk went, its not in the wood pile anymore and hasn't been captured on the trail cam.

Lots of pics of my dog, and this cat I got no idea who it belongs too.

I'll give it another week, see if it comes back around.  I don't think my back yard is quiet enough with all the lumber and stuff being tossed on top of his hole  :chuckle:
I need to tune up this trap anyways, its getting slow and got a few problems could let the skunk get away.

yup got the little bugger today, sorry no video I took the camera and put it out in the woods for its intended use.
Kind of surprised it took a week to get it, I know they do a route or circuit but thought it was more frequent than a week or more.

Could trap 100 skunks and the 101st will still show you something different I guess huh
