Love this thread...great pictures all, but there is just something about wood arrows with feathers, hip quivers, recurve bows and dead deer that seem well....almost perfect.

This is my brothers 2013 buck. I found him while scouting about a month ago with three other four points. It took us a couple days to locate him on this trip but we had an excellent adventure together. I am trying to earn the big brother of the year award. :) Any guess at the score, I haven't put a tape to it yet? Now we need to find a taxidermist near Ellensburg.

They did my uncles bull, did an excellent job.

What's with the beer choice? Did I miss some mandatory hunting celebration vitamin R requirement? I've seen it far too often this year. I assumed we, as hunters, had better taste than that.

Great buck. Mid-170's.

you know how it is Jack, sometimes you have to go back to the basics, kickin' it old school. :chuckle:

I moved to the wet side, (Port Angeles,) in February of 2005 and bow hunted the '06 season here in Chewelah. Because of vacation time off I riffle hunted with my Daughters and would come home to hunt White tails. I decided to bow this year before I knew I would be moving back home to Cherwelah. The day after I applied for westside elk draws I opened the Chewelah paper and saw a job posted with my old employer and made a phone call. Was nice to be able to scout before season and I am looking forward to my daughters and wife getting their bucks year. Spending time scouting and checking trail cameras with my last daughter who is 14 has been great this past summer. She has her eye on a particular buck and I hope she gets it. Here is my first archery deer in 7 years.

First Mulie. We got a small cinnamon bear and the deer in the same day.

My muzzy benchleg buck.
Can I ask what area this is in and how you came to the conclusion it is a benchleg? That scenery is far from any blacktail country. Just curious. Heck of a nice buck.
-
aren't all bucks in central Washington considered benchleg bucks? I'm no biologist but you can also really tell by the tail around here.

Youngest boy. 8:30 this morning.

Weather just isnt right for alot of deer to take a dirt nap. Congrats to those that connected so far. Im gunna wait another week or so, so keep the pics coming.
-
went up to Capitol Forest opening day, even though I rolled into my perspective spot at 430AM someone had beat me to it, I went to the next cut up and waited. glassed till 1115AM, and decided to take off in search of other options. Had seen 12 deer this morning, including a buck that was better at eluding than I was at killing. As I was leaving I noticed my initial spot was vacated, I worked my way to my lookout stump and 10 minutes later this fella steps out. I lined up my vortex scope between the 200-300 hashes on the BDC and dropped this boy with a Nosler 130 grain shooting out of a 1st time hunted 270 Ruger American Rifle right through the boiler. He walked 3 yards and collapsed. If you have not seen the accuracy with the Ruger Americans, I suggest you check them out. Great gun for the money. Later I was able to use a fellow hunters range finder to place the Buck at 279 yards from the stump.
Should be noted, the guy that had beat me there earlier in the morning I had met last year. He came down to see what he missed out on. Told me he had to run to town cause when he went to get some water out of his rig, he noticed that his tire was extremely low on pressure. He was gone about a 1 hour total and that is when I found this little guy, mixed feelings with looking forward to hunting all year and the deer season lasts all of 6 hours, but meat in the freezer is a good thing. Time to clean the rifle and stock up on supplies for Elk camp next.
-
Congrats Bigsads! Pretty busy up there today? Looked like it from all the traffic coming back down around 3:30 this afternoon
-
grats all ya not much shooting arund where i was hunting. seen several 2pts couple of spikes but no 3pts.
-
Little bit, unless you know places that every person in Lewis, Thurston and Grays Harbor does not know about already. I hunt mainly the GH side, can be a lot quieter then the Littlerock side. however while sitting in my truck waiting for daylight to approach had 5 rigs come in behind me and back out. After passing up several spikes last year, I changed my motto for this season to be, "If it is legal, I will be lethal"
\

Step dad and a couple buddies did work! Both bucks were shot at 486yards

Gary Leonardo taxidermy in Yakima does great work!

I went out on my first Desert mule deer hunt today and bagged this big boy by 7:45am right after I passed on a two pt. I dropped my buddy off a mile way to coyote hunt and I was hopping he would push some deer my way but as luck had it I was in them right off the bat. I spotted 15 deer feeding first thing in the morning. I watch them for 45 Min's around 100 yards away. As it got brighter I could see two bucks and the rest does and fawns. I almost shot the 2pt it was just to easy but I held it there and passed on him. I lost sight of the doe's and seen that the buck started to walk at me. I slowly stood up to see wear the doe's were and BUSTED They were 10 yards to my left I didn't even here them. Sneaky little devil's I walked a mile round the sage and started to call with a rabbit squealer to see if a buck would stand up. NO LUCK I spotted my buddy at 500 yards and started back to the truck. I looked up and I could see this big guy looking right at me. Busted again so I took aim and fired. I herd the hit and I didn't see him run off. I ran over to see if he was down. I found him dead as a door nail. He is the biggest deer I a have ever shot. The shot was around 150 to 180 yards.... I love my Knight Big horn it shoots great.
-
Nice job Bear Hunter! Heck of a deer.
grats all ya not much shooting arund where i was hunting. seen several 2pts couple of spikes but no 3pts.

Here is my public land muzzy muley from eastern wa. My first muzzy muley trip, and we successfully filled 2/3 tags. My wife will get to hunt late season on the wetside. The pics are not great because I shot him with 15 min of light left. In the morning he was so stiff that we couldn't position him for a good pose. 25" inside spread he has a lot of character. Knight bighorn, peep sight, barnes t-mz 250gr. Got him out by dragging him with my buddy and my wifes help over 650 yards uphill, across, and down.
-
Wife's firs buck
-
Got my first mulie just after first light opening day in Teanaway. Drug him out 3 miles. Eyeguards were a little too short (3/4") to be a 5x5. Totally stoked to have harvested my first deer in about 12 years.

Nice buck!

Nice buck, especially after a dry spell.
Nice job loki, was that the one that was coming within hand feeding distance a few weeks back?
-
This is my brothers 2013 buck.

Opening day. On the ground by 8:15.
-
Nothing special, but it's legal meat. 11AM opening day. Now I can rest up and scout more for Elk (which I prefer). Only saw 2 other hunters while I was active. Found this guy 200 yards from my camp when I was circling back. So my theory of waiting for the pumpkins to spook the boys uphill into the thick-woods with me payed off.
While I was high up in the reprod, had 4 Elk creep up the hill and pass me 20 yards away. 2 youngs, a cow and a beautiful 5x6 bull. Was Majestic, and had me wishing it was Elk season already instead of deer haha. I'll see you again in 3 weeks Mr. Bull
-
My opening day buck hit the ground around 9:00 got dads deer saturday evening now we can focus on getting our elk stuff together
-
Not bad for the opening weekend, no monsters yet this year. A happy camp over all.
-
Here's my Opening Day buck out of the Chiwawa that I shot at 40 yards, 20 minutes into the season. Not the biggest buck I've killed out there but hey, he's hanging in the garage. Gotta love a successful season!

10 year old son Wyatt's first deer, also his first year hunting and first day .. 140 yard shot with the 243.. quartered and packed him out using gutless method..

I inherited an older WBY 300 Mag that kicks like a mule too. Never been scope kissed by it, but it's a chore to sight in. I only use it as a backup rifle. SOmeone once told me that those old Weatherby stocks were designed to look beautiful, not to absorb recoil. :chuckle:

My Younger sons 1st buck. Here's what his older brother posted on facebook. Very proud of both boys.
"The adrenaline, heart pounding, blood rushing, trying to film Matt's stalk and shot while shaking like a leaf with the camera, while I'm watching him and the buck, staying back from where he took the shot so I don't spook him. Matt gets to the rocks on the edge of this cliff, 60 yard shot, downhill, lays the smack down on his first buck. Incredibly proud big brother, happier for him then getting one for myself."

Hi all. Mostly just bird hunted for years. First post with my first buck!

I think I'll have a hard time topping this one without drawing a tag. I posted a pic of him late in Nov. 2012 with a broken tine and a banged up eye. I'll bet he added 15" in a year and wasn't very old. Should've let him go I guess :chuckle:

Great bucks everyone!
I had a couple of requests for a story. I got pics of him for the first time last November which you can view in the link above. The next time I saw him was during a preseason scouting trip after muzzle loader and I got a little too close for comfort. I got a quick look at him heading out at around 150 yards and again briefly at 700 as he crawled into a brushy pocket. I hunted with some friends opening day and had some good action. One tagged his first buck a nice 3 point. I decided to get into a position where I could see more of this bucks territory on day two and it paid off. I saw him and a smaller buck sneaking away from another hunter around a mile out...heads low to the ground the whole time. I watched them find a suitable draw after 3/4 of a mile and they disappeared. I glassed it hard for an hour thinking of the best approach and running through several scenarios in my head. During that time a Coyote came out below them and seemed to sit an look back at them for a while. One of those dreaded big forked horn bucks came in nearly the same route but disappeared 200 yards up the same draw. It took 1 1/2 hours to get into position and the 2 point was across to draw as I approached. He kicked out at about 400 yard which told me to move in much quicker. They came out below me and across the draw at close enough not to range and started to slow near the 200 mark now moving broadside but into a finger. I fire the 300RUM 3 times and watched the last shot kick dirt on the hill behind as he left my site. I was relieved to see only the smaller buck skyline as I side hilled and found mine laying motionless. I hit low in the neck, back in the brisket and one through the lungs. 3 1/2hours later I was back at the truck with 70# of meat and 30# of cape...3 days later, my body recovered.

Opening Morning.

Oh..Okay...
Congrats Steve, that's a great buck.
He's got character! Big ole puffed up right cheek. Must have gotten into a good battle. Left eye guard is half or so broken off. I'd like to see what buck kicked his butt! He's got a kicker on the backside of his left. The Crab Claw is typical for this gene pool. Not wide. Not tall. Just an average 4-5 maybe (doubtful 6) year old. (But his teeth were in great shape) Solid body, with an inch and a half of fat, but maybe not as big as the one I got last year. Still heavy to get out by myself on a deer cart. I cheated from the gate to the camp. Towed him with the truck for a 1/4 mile.

I assume that you're talking about the fore hooves up on the mains. Makes for a much easier drag without the front legs catching on things. Put them there before rigor sets in and they'll stay.

Couple of deer. My doe and my step-son's first deer. I only have pictures on this computer of my doe at the moment, I will get my step-son's buck on here as soon as I can. I drew a second doe tag and finally got a shot at an average doe for the area on thursday afternoon. Looking over a massive rock outcropping/cliff. I sat there because there was a great view of the mountain and could look over the green older timber filled with huge boulders and caverns below. I sat there for a bit thinking it would be a long pack if one came out below me. Then I realized the one small boulder didnt have any moss or leaves on it like the rest. So I brought up the binos and there she was laying there sleeping. 120 yard-ish. She never got out of her bed. The winchester partition gold slug entered high in the close side lung, traveled through the back half of the second lung. First kill for my slug gun and the sore shoulder from all the practice time with that beast paid off. Originally never thought Id have to shoot that range with it but good thing I practiced for it. Almost filled my general tag on the way out. There was a fork horn standing on one side of the log road under powerlines, and the other side of the road was a house and they had old abandon cars parked all over, so I thought the property might extend to the other side of the road. So he just stared at me like a dufus as I turned to walk away. Then I saw the signs designating private and huntable boundary, he was in the good to go zone. I whipped around just in time to see a white rump go into the brush. Then friday I hunted up in the battleground against the coweeman boarder with my stepson, just trying to get him any legal deer pretty much, for his first. When we had no luck and ran out of snacks, we headed to my family's 40 acres on the south side of woodland in the hills. Deer are in there a lot but mostly at night. Its 30 acres of hay fields and 10 acre clear cut surrounded by thick brush and timber of the other private plots around us. We walked through the clear cut and heard that tell tale sound of a deer bouncing away. Came around the brush and were trying to get to a better view point when my stepson said in an urgent whisper. "hey, I see it" He saw it frozen 100 yards down the hill I didnt see it till it moved, haha. I told him shoot, he brought up the slug gun to his shoulder.... BOOM! I see the deer jump, buck, and bound over the blackberry thicket by the creek and into the brush. Light was fading fast and I knew the deer was hurting as I had seen it jump off. We gave it what time we could and went looking. No blood, I was worried. We forgot flashlights so we were looking with the flashlights on our phones, turned a corner in the brush and there he was laying down looking at us from less than ten feet away. Made one quick shot and he was down. The buck had been getting ready to trot off as he shot and the first shot hit a little far back. But we recovered the slug. It grazed the back edge of the close lung, angled back, tore open stomach and bowels went through the hip and opposite side hind quarter and lodged under the hide on the opposite side. I felt bad, I had full well planned on making him clean his whole first deer, just giving verbal advice, but in the dark and that badly gutshot... I could barely stand it when I did it. I just told him the next time I get anything and he is there, he is cleaning it, haha. Its a spike with 3-5 inch spikes, and odd eye guard looking points coming straight out of the bases in front of the main spike. looks kinda like the top portion of a pronghorn's horn. Cant wait to get his pictures up. I am very proud to say the least :)
-
GMU 651. Super nice weather on Oct. 17th. 20 yd quartering away shot. He didn't even know I was there. Shot with a .243 at 0910. Didn't get him to the truck until 1600 due to being around 4.5 to 5 miles in on foot. Bullet broke through 3 ribs, went through the liver, lungs, aorta on top of the heart and landed in the opposite side shoulder...(http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/10/28/pytemu6u.jpg)

Went on a 5 day solo backpacking hunt for blacktails. I passed on 4 bucks and almost passed on this old buck (even took a live pic of him through the scope). It was quite an adventure... Not a good scoring buck at all but I'm happy with him. He's 19-1/4" on the outside spread.

My 2013 Idaho buck.
Maybe it's just the angle of the picture, but that thing looks like a TANK! Any idea how much he weighed?
-
He was a tank for sure, 238 hanging at butcher without hide legs and guts. We figured well into the 300 pound range on the hoof.
-
Here's another angle. I'm 6'2 245 pounds and am resting my shins on his back.
-
My shin I should say so I dont catch any grief. He was a huge deer to say the least.

Judging by the amount of guys that hunt the Teanaway, I don't know if under rated (or under hunted) apply. Unless this is sarcasm. That is a really great buck no shirt guy. Congrats.

Congrats to all, some fine animals on this thread......
Havent heard of many comming out of the famous TRIPOD this year.We hunted it for ONE day(way to many humans for our liking)then drove 2 hours thru 6 or 8 other units to get far far away from it :chuckle:. Have hunted the area off and on going back 40 years, we usually spend a lot more time hunting the area along with other haunts and holes. This time around seen a few does and a couple small bucks...seen 2 big cougars tho and lots of orange :yike:...hopefully the hype wares off, almost funny talking to some of the hunters, armed with maps, gps you name it, then as we were trying to get the heck out of there some of them asked us if they were close to the area where the "tripod buck" was shot :chuckle:.(a couple actually flagged us down as we were driving out)Most of them said it was the first time hunting the area and really didnt know where to go but have been hearing its the place to be! As bone and phool said in another thread ---THERES ALWAYS BEEN A FEW BIG BUCKS IN THAT AREA,SOMEONE FINALLY SHOT ONE,THATS ALL... This statement can be said for a lot of different units all around eastern washington from the Canadian border to the Oregon border and everywhere in between. :twocents:.

Here's my "little" blacktail. I posted the story in another thread a few weeks back.
A couple of specs: 136"gross, 20" inch spread, hind point on the 3 pt side is 13" inches long
(http://i1219.photobucket.com/albums/dd434/willinghRJ/IMG_12982.jpg) (http://s1219.photobucket.com/user/willinghRJ/media/IMG_12982.jpg.html)

I also found his buddy, but it looks like he didn't fair the winter as well. By the looks of his bases, I bet he was a big boy too.

-
My first eastern Washington buck!

That is a nice deer and antler mount, just FYI what you call the hind point is called the G-2.
Agreed, I just wasn't sure if everyone else knew where the G 2 was so I simplified it.

Well, did you know that Ole' McDonald was a really bad speller?...
Origin ... Antler ... possibly from some form of an unattested Latin word *anteocularis, "before the eye"(and applied to the word for "branch" or "horn").
Used in a sentence ... I did not say Aunt Lira had a big butt, I said, look at the antlers on that big buck ;)

You would think after chasing this buck for four years my brother would take the time to take a decent picture. But think again :chuckle: MD deer don't get much better! Taking it with a Bear Truth2 and Savora broadheads even better. Haven't heard him sound this excited in nearly 30 years.

Heavy 4X3 taken opening day. I was done by 9 am. Now what do I do for the rest of my vacation? Field dressed at 197lbs. scores 145 B and C. Taken near Silver Creek, WA Oh Yea ! By the way, I see a lot of muleys here. This is a true blacktail.

Thats an awsome blacktail , hunted western side last 25 years and never even come close to that. I'll have to agree 30/70 and one of my personal great philosophies you never get big bucks shooting small bucks.

Told my daughter I would shoot any two point when she was with me. We saw a very small two before this one but just couldn't quite Get a shot. This guy came out about a min after a doe. About a mile pack out and of course she REALLY wanted to keep the hide so no dragging this one. She was so excited. It is One of my favorite hunts.

My buddy's Battleground unit backyard bruiser. He was been watching this guy and one that is a near identical twin and another 3X4 on their 5 acres since high school. His mom said no to shooting anything on the property, she liked seeing them. She finally gave him a go ahead to take 1 of the big boys if he sees it during season. Opening day late buck and he finally got the biggest of the 3 they have seen. It has 4 on each side, the one is hard to see at the angle of the pic

There is one almost identical to that out by the Gristmill in the tree farm. I knew the answer, but asked the land owner for permission anyway. I was lucky to get out of there with my life! Guess he has been a close family friend for a lot of years :chuckle:
That is a great buck. Base diameter rarely seen on WA blacktail. I'd be buying mom one heck of a Christmas present this year ;)
-
I know it, he told me about this guy a few years back. He didnt say how heavy it was getting. Thats some thick heavy bases on that guy. I've been drooling since he sent me the pic this morning. This was a few miles outside of La Center, between La Center and Battleground.

My buddy's blacktail from this morning. We hiked in a couple miles and then split up. 10 minutes later I heard him shoot. There was two does and another bigger buck with this one that he didn't see until after he put this one down.

Thursday the 14th with about 10 minutes shooting time left. T/C Contender carbine, 7-30 Waters, one neck shot @ about 65 yards, 4x4 plus eyeguards. The wind was blowing the grass and playing tricks with the autofocus...too bad!

3X3 Blacktail taken yesterday morning in Ashford (654). This is the first deer I have taken with an AR-15, 6.8spc. Not the deer I was looking for, but the late season is not a time to be picky.

If anyone has read the Hancock bucks thread they would know that I left for a more peaceful hunt and will never buy that permit again, I hope. Too me, that is not hunting.
Anyway, made it out to a solid stand of timber near Riffe Lake. Saw two rigs today and one hunter, two does and one small buck that I took just because I was in the moment hunting like hunting should be and I thought that a buck, any buck, would be a nice topper.
As it lays, yeah, I know, this is an epic "As it Lays", my best ever, lol.

Nicely done. Now get out there and wack some yippers. My wife and I are heading up to Foothills to give the deer one last go today. We'll get serious about the coyotes here in a couple weeks.

Dads late buck hunt. Not real wide but really tall and a perfect heavy 4 point with eyeguards. Double throat patch and 16" wide ears. Should score 140-150.

Is that a late 388 buck by chance kamo? Just curious as he looks like the same genes as one I killed a few years ago.

I wasn't refering to Canada but the true value of the US dollar these days. Since you brought it up though, the US dollar is worth less than our cousins dollar to the North as well. ;)

4 days of sitting except an hour for lunch and warm-up time. I had at least a dozen pictures of different bucks and many more does on the Friday before the season. Monday morning through today, at most 8 deer the entire day with 1 day only seeing a single buck out of range. I still have my boy to take hunting and the week was disappearing. So after sitting all day today and only seeing a 4X4 at 45 yards through trees, it started to snow at 2 in the afternoon and stopped at 3. Then this guy walks in at 20 yards with 3 does. I wasn't about to let him walk, but what happened next was unbelievable.
After shooting him, the does just stood there, then 1 by 1, the flood gates opened. I counted 17 deer walking past my stand with at least 5 more bucks. I called a friend to help with the drag out and had him walk into the stand to get them all out of there so it wasn't the stand they ran from. My boy is already for tomorrow. Can we go 2 for 2?
-
any of the 5 bucks bigger? Congrats. always fun to see a lot of animals. shooters or not
-
It happens to me every year that prior to the season I'll have a bunch of 100" to 120" buck hanging around, but when the Rut kicks, the big boys will cruse through. In past years I've had bucks in the 140" to 160" class make appearances routinely. Today however, all the buck I saw tonight were from the local crowd. There was another 4X4 that I would have liked to shoot, but I made my choice at full draw!
Now it's time for my son to show up his old man. I'm super ready for him to shoot a monster, and now that they are back, that might happen. He is very accomplished at 17 years of age, putting down a nice 5X5 at 123" when he was only 12. He has some inches to go before he tops my largest, but for me, I'd rather shoot a spike and see him shoot the bruiser! Lately, its been the best part of my year to hunt with him.
Attached is a picture of the buck he couldn't come to full draw on last year. This is an example of the big boys that some through. Never see them until the rut.
-
Sounds awesome. Good luck to him and enjoy that time! I am waiting for my 5 year old daughter to get into it. I am new to hunting but she loves that I do it and eats whatever I bring home so now I just gotta get her out in the woods more and work up to her wanting to shoot something for herself. Priceless memories!
-
Haven't been on hunt-wa for a while and just started back up on here...thought IDE share this years kill.
Best hunt I've had in a long time. My dad and I both shot our bucks on the last day of our hunt 15 feet apart from each other. No where close to the biggest buck I've shot but I haven't hunted with my dad in a long time and having that special moment with him was awesome. For those that are wondering the gang sign stands for three E's which is for the three Emericks that go hunting, which is a my dad, myself, and my brother. As soon as my son is old enough it will be 4-E's. All of us and a friend of mine got our bucks in the last two days. Was slim pickings this year. Which is weird for our areas we hunt. Usually we see a lot of animals and several legal bucks. This year the one I shot was the only buck I saw. But still good enough for me. What a great hunt.
Either way thanks for sharing pics...can't wait for next year already. Congrats everyone! AJ

I am new to the site and am not quite sure if I am posting this correctly, so if I am doing this wrong I apologize.
I shot this late season muzzy deer on December 1. It took some serious time and effort during the late season to final get a buck. The weather conditions were not the greatest (fog), but when it finally lifted on Sunday I was able to finally spot one!
I put on a 500 yard stock on this buck, but when I got to where I thought I would have a 100 yard shot, but it turned out the buck was still 250 yards away. I regrouped and decided to back out a ways and make a big circle so I could get the wind in my favor. After about an hour of stalking and the last 100 yards crouched low, I was in position, 100 yards! The only problem I had was that the buck was bedded and all I could see was his rack. I decided to be patient and wait him out. 5 minutes later the doe he was with stood (spooked by my buddy that was about 500 yards away). She decided she did not like his presence and took off running, directly at me! Slowly after the buck stood and started off behind her. The doe got 15 yards away from me and finally saw me and turned a bit and ran away from me. I knew the buck would follow so I sat down took a deep breath and waited for the buck to come over the little hill I was on. He came through at a full sprint, at 30 yards, I held in front of him and pulled the trigger…WHACK and then the buck did a cartwheel! He was down; shot him right through the neck! He is definitely not the biggest buck I have seen this year, but it was by far one of the more exciting hunts I have ever been on!
-

Me and my 9 year old daughter went out opening morning and were able to harvest this 4x4 whitey. It was our first deer together and I hope there are many more to come. She was thrilled as she spotted this guy; due to the ants in her pants and not be able to sit still. We watched this guy sparring with a smaller buck before taking him. She thought I had gotten rid of the antlers, but in fact I had taken them to the taxidermist to have it mounted for her. Needless to say, she was very excited when I gave it to her as an early Christmas present.

my first deer. can't wait for next season...
Awsome first buck  Gonna be a tough on to beat! Is there a story of the hunt and more pics?
thought i loaded the story from my phone a while back but guess it didn't make it so here goes again.
this was my first year hunting; my dad brought us up fishing steelhead and salmon but only ever took us target shooting. this was the first year i had the funds and time to get started - 38 years old but it's never too late.
i bought a .308 a couple years ago and finally got around to hunter's ed this year (had to make the res months in advance). i really had no idea how to go about hunting so got most of my info off this forum and the net. longtime backpacker but had never set out with a goal of shooting anything. i'm a DIY kind of guy and my friends that hunt are in other corners of the state so i was solo.
i spent my first few days making a lot of noise and bushwhacking around ne washington trying to find access - didn't have time to scout before the season so my first many days of "hunting" were really scouting. early season came and went and i only saw a few deer i spooked, but i finally found some public land with a couple clear areas 3 or 4 miles from the gates where there were some rubs and fresh sign. i had 3 days off the last week of late season and was pretty stoked cuz snow was forecast.
i got up friday afternoon and sat in my first spot for a few hours in the snow until light was gone and didn't see diddly. pretty discouraged - decided later the rubs and sign i'd seen weren't as fresh as i thought... next morning i was up and in the same spot an hour before light just like everyone says you should - it had snowed more overnight and was still sprinkling a little snow. there were lots of coyote tracks but only one set of hoofs. i heard a gunshot from the direction of my other spot out of another gate. after a couple of hours i got discouraged again and decided to bail. i hiked out and drove over to the other gate, and sure enough someone had scored - there was blood in the snow at the pullout and drag marks in the snow by the gate.
i decided to just walk up and check it out - the gutpile was only a half mile from the pullout. looked like someone got real lucky and had a buck step out of the thick stuff onto the road - must have ben the easiest pack out ever - they dragged their deer a half mile downhill in the snow. i was pretty jealous - thought that shoulda been my deer haha. it was getting pretty late so i decided to walk all the way in to the clear spot and review the lay of the land so i could get to a settin spot easy the next morning.
about three miles in I come around the corner and see a buck!!! about 200 yards away traipsing broadside across the hillside. i went to one knee, safety off, and put him the crosshairs. i was hoping he'd stop moving but he kept on walking and i was afraid he'd get to the thick stuff so i pulled the trigger. down he goes and down he stayed. i couldn't believe it. i thought for sure he would get up and run - i chambered another round but he stayed down. turned out i got lucky and got both lungs and the aorta. i don't think i've ever had such a satisfying moment in nature - and i've caught some pretty big salmon and steelhead in diy mode..
i walked up the hill to him and just stared until it started to get dark, and then the (fun) work started. I'd left my pack at the truck - i'd planned on just going up and back to plan the next day's hunt... i jogged back to the truck and traded pack for rifle and jogged back in, the whole time worrying about lions and bears chewing on my deer.
all i have to say is thanks for the online tutorials about gutless methods of processing deer - huge help. it took me 3.5 hours in the dark and snow, but i got all the good meat into pillowcases and into my pack with very little hair or dirt - used a tarp as a base. i think next time it will take a lot less time. i took everything out in one trip - musta been at least 80-100 lbs but at the end of 3 miles it felt like 1000.
i jerked and ground and vacuum packed over the rest of the weekend. my wife and family love it - we haven't bought meat in the last 2 months, and there's a lot left. i skinned out the head and boiled the skull and bleached it - made a pretty cool mount with a skull hooker.
bottom line - i'm hooked - plan on teaching my kids to hunt growing up. i can't wait for next year - i'd really like to get an elk (yeah, i know, so does everyone else). i hiked quite a bit this year during elk season (in 113) but only saw old sign and a moose. - didn't see any elk on the hoof. if anyone is willing to share some tips on where in 113 to head for elk, i would be willing to trade whatever - work, fishing tips, etc..
thanks to all the folks on here for the good info and tips that helped me get a deer this year - looking forward to being a contributer in the next few years myself.

Harvey,
It's actually refreshing to hear a story where "things work out the way they should". Congrats on a great NE Wa buck!
For the record, if you were up there the last 3 days of the season, I think you hit the rut movement at just the right time. I was up there with a late tag just a few days later, and everything was brushed up.

Late season, Quality draw. Hunted all week, then the fog rolled in and the weather report called for fog through the rest of the permit season. Wasn't the biggest buck I saw, but he was the best opportunity for the circumstances. First mule deer.

Thanks Bone. That means a lot to me coming from a photographer of your caliber. I take pride in taking the best pics I can. It's my way of honoring the animal and the hunt.

late to the game here. Ton of great bucks. This is the first Non Typical I've seen in the woods. He turned into my shot resulting in a single lung / liver hit, then it started snowing. 500 yd recovery the next morning. those who say a hard hit buck wont travel uphill dont hunt mountain whitetails!

Better late than never! Nice buck and yes "fatally wounded deer never go uphill". Or so I've been told. :chuckle: I learned the same lesson this year. My deer(poorly hit, but fatal) gained over five hundred feet in elevation before death occurred. Thanks for sharing!

Nice deer....congrats
I like to take a pic or two without the tag (though I always notch my tag immediately upon recovery). I will often place a picture with my antlers (euro mount or antler mount) and don't care to have a tag distracting from the majestic creature having it's picture taken. Also...I sometimes hang my tag off the back leg or in the ear depending on how I am getting my animal out. Really to each his own...but I know a lot of people complain about it cause they have interpreted the laws to say you must hang a tag immediately. I read it a different way. :twocents:

Sorrry, i didnt mean that anybody on here did not notch there tag. Or anything like that i know alot of people get there pics before they transport ther animal. I guess im just proud of myself, tag and all hope nobody takes it the wrong way. :sry:

Seeing a animal in its true habitat is more majestic for me.Its like seeing a cougar on your trail cam taking deer and killing it thats majestic for me.Its in its true habitat. When i look at my horns on the wall i think about the habitat were it was shot, and the steaks, jerky, and roasts it put in my belly.

Thanks for the kind words everyone! The tanned cape was stored elsewhere and is safe. So I hope it's ok to ask here that if anyone has a close matching set for sale to please let me know. Then the family would still have their throphy. 360 790-1453.
Thank You in advance :bash:
I went ahead and had a set of repos done. I received them back about a month ago and last week my taxi called for my antlers! He has a beautiful new shop. I saw my cape and it is gorgeous. Super stoked! Cost me a bit more but getting ready to bring him home when he is done.
