Its about time for our annual thread. I know there are monsters already hitting the ground in other states, and God willing, our seasons are about to get underway here.
Lets keep a running list of all the bucks killed by our members on here for 2014.
Post a pic or 2 and a brief story here and we'll see what we've got at the end of the season

My 2014 Nevada buck. My friend and I (Elkgetr2 on HuntWA) left home last Wednesday after work with 2 buck tags and high hopes of big bucks. Drove through the night and arrived to our planned area to hunt about 8am the next morning. Made a 3 day weekend scouting trip in July with some good pointers from a few more than generous Hunt WA members. (Much thanks Hockman!) Mid day of day 1 we spotted my buck and 2 other bucks of similar size in one basin. I put a sneak on this buck and closed the distance to 100 yards but ended up sneaking away due to changing conditions and darkness coming quickly. We spent the following 2 days watching the same 3 bucks waiting for an opportunity to capitalize. After sitting and glassing all morning on day 3 with not seeing any of the bucks we spot my buck. I made a 4 hour stalk and was 53 yards from where I knew he was bedded but was unable to see him. After a 30 minute wait I was able to see antler tips moving. He was up and feeding in the super tall brush but I could only see antlers. I could barely hold my rangefinder still as I attempted many times to get a range on a nearby bush. 43 yards. Just as the buck stepped into the open I holstered my rangefinder on my hip and he pegged me. Mostly hidden behind a wall of the thickest nasty green brush I have ever crawled through I drew my bow back half knelt down. My knees shook as a stood up trying my best to hold my 40 yard pin on his vitals through the brush. As soon as my pin cleared the brush I fired an arrow and dropped the buck in his tracks. My heart pounded as I attempted to run and fight my way to get to him as I could hear him thrashing but couldn't see him.Turned into a late night packing and a rough tailgate in the dark gross score of 188. Still over here hunting for a buck for my buddy, time to get back at it. Wanted to share a few words to go with my pictures. I wish everyone the best of luck this season! . Nice buck bone collector.

Pretty sure I at least tied for the first deer legally taken in WA state this year :chuckle: I was setup in my blind about an hour before dark and this guy came in about 20 minutes before light...I had my arrow nocked and waited and waited for the clock to strike 5:50 figuring this guy would move on before then...at 5:49:45am he was still there so I drew my bow...and at 5:50:10am this buck was laying dead 40 yards from my blind. Drove the pickup to him and regretted paying $140 for that multiweapon tag I used for all of 10 seconds of a deer season!

You are. There is more info in his thread regarding the taking of the deer. Pretty neat stuff regarding stalk and shot distance/angle. Heck of great one shot kill on a sweet deer. He also posted some other bucks from past years that will get the heart beating as well.

Bumped this guy out of his bed the afternoon of the 2nd but couldn't get a shot through the trees and shot him the morning of the 3rd from my tree stand. Made a 30 yard shot on him with a double lung pass through. I saw this buck for the first time the night before the opener pushing a couple 4x4's around. Didn't expect to see him again after that but after one close call still hunting I decided to set up my stand in that area. Watched some does and a 2pt walk by. Then at 9am of the 3rd morning this big boy stepped out. A 27" wide 5x6 that fidalgo taxidermy scored at 171 3/8". My biggest bow buck to date.

He is a dandy!!

2014 high buck. Not much going on in my spot this year. Glassed for two days and saw two legal bucks this being one of them. With time being limited and a rotator cuff on the outs. It was an easy decision.
-
Nice ! Good tender steaks there. I'm surprised more high bucks haven't been posted. You got it done quick.
-
My son took this nice 3X4 on the second day of the High Buck Season, his 1st deer, 450 yard poke!

successful high buck hunt this year. He isn't the biggest but he was the biggest of the 4 bucks we saw. Ended up seeing 30 does and 4 bucks. heard 8 shots on Tuesday morning up in the Pasayten so hopefully some more guys will be posting soon. I will post a story on the board.
-
Here's a couple pics of the blacktail buck I shot yesterday
-
Not mine, but my buddy got this big boy yesterday when we were out trying to get my 1st deer.
Morning started out with me at full draw on a doe @40yrds around 7:30am. My gut told me not to take the shot, part of her was covered and she did not look that big so I let her go. after that , that area had more hunters and no deer, so we moved.
The new area we parked and worked a ravine. lots of old sign and tons of bed spots. We busted a group of 10-12 out of their beds as about to get on road at the end of the ravine and hoof back to truck. I looked across the road and had he perfect black solohuette of a buck. I didn't even believe what I saw, but got partners attention and he saw the buck at the same time. we dropped down and he started to nock and arrow as I wen to rang him (50yrds) and a doe 15yrds away caught us. They all ran about a 1/2 mile thru fields with a few stragglers that stayed in visual. was backed out just a hair and tried to decide what to do.
This was all open fields, no cover to pursue. After just a couple minutes one of them starts wandering back. we dump bags and take cover in the sage they had been bedded in. The lone deer (turned to be a spike) came all he way in to the middle of the sage, 15yrdaway but no shot. he eventually trotted left and downwind of us. Then he rest of the group wandered back, but all stayed 100yrds to left in open field.
We backed out again got water and were just watching the other group when we look back and the big buck is trotting straight at us. Once again we hustle to cover. Knowing what the spike had done I jumped way forward so I was in the sage and elevated knob. I lost sight of him as he approached, but could hear him close, even heard footfalls. I caught a glimpse of ears and rack heading left toward my partner. I had a small lane and drew thinking he would come thru it, but he never did. I let down and just sat. suddenly I hear a bunch of stomping and a heavy breaths then quiet. I try and peak up but do not see anything busting out, then I realize that he noise had been stationary. He had come back and bedded in he same spot we busted him from and within 30min of doing so. Then I hear a twang- ffffftttt-THWACK. I jump up and full draw toward sound and see him running off with an arrow out his side!! He had beded down 20yrds from my partner and in plain sight. The buck had seen him as he stood and drew and got up, but hesitated, buddy hit him qtr away, nicked close side lung and blasted far side. Buck ran up over the hill, walking as went out of sight. We waited 15min and then started tracking up. very little blood sign, in fact tracking hoof prints was easier. Thankfully he ran out into open cultivated field. we found him about 30min after the shot, down and out. I hoofed it back 2.5mi to the truck while he stayed and kept and eye on the buck. By the time I got beck he had it almost fully gutted. This dude was a haus, we are estimating at least 250# on the hoof, probably a good bit more. after gutting it took both of us 30min to drag him 1/4mi across pretty flat, open field.

Really some nice bucks on here so far. Congrats to all. I'm waiting for late bow to deer hunt, but seeing these makes the waiting hurt. I'll at least get a little fix when I take my son out for modern.

The Jameson Buck 2014....
Like most of the Hunt WA members; each year I participate in the annual family deer hunting trip to Eastern WA (Modern Firearm Season). I have harvested my fair share of deer over the years. I am thankful and proud of each deer I have ever taken, but this year I wanted to do something different. So I set a few goals this Spring. I decided to put in for a Multi Season deer permit, with the idea I would try Muzzle Loading in a few new hunt areas. The priority; tag out prior to the modern season so I could focus 100% of my time coaching my son (Sammy). Sammy has hunted 3 seasons, but has not harvested his first buck. I can remember being a kid and getting discouraged, because I missed and my father would end up shooting the deer. That happened to Sammy 2 season ago, with me by his side. The only deer I wish I would have let run off. This will probably be Sammy's last year hunting in WA, as he plans on enrolling in the armed services after he graduates. This year I will make sure he gets his buck!
I watch the deer year round in 4 GMUs. One of my goals was to find several hunt areas within those GMUs. I began with talking to Hunt WA members, driving every piece of state property in the GMUs, talking with land owners, going to the court house and purchasing maps, etc. I even met with the DNR manager, to double check access routes etc. While doing this I discovered an area (private hunting) full of legal bucks. On June 24, 2014 I started taking notes and documenting every deer I discovered, land owner names, phone numbers, doing internet research, calling 411, etc. I went all out. On July 24, 2014 I had documented 108 legal bucks in 4 GMUs. The problem; land access, private hunting, etc. I could probably hunt less than 20% of what I researched. So I told myself; its time to implement the next phase, which was to target 1 specific area and find a way to get permission to hunt. I knew right where I wanted to go. Over the next 60 days I started to get the run-around. I'm sure Hunt WA members have heard "We already have our hunters for the year". "Our family hunts the property, so we don't let anyone hunt it". "Sorry, but we don't allow hunting". It can be very discouraging! I kept at it, and finally figured out whom to talk to, and where he lived. I set an appointment, and off I went. After a really nice conversation, I asked if my family could hunt the property? The response...yes! I was jacked! I am a hard hunter. I knew if I could get access, that I would fill my tag prior to the modern season. The only problem; no Muzzle Loader season offered in the GMU. I was left with Archery. The last time a shot a bow, was when I was a little boy. I had zero experience.
In late July I went of to a fellow Hunt WA members house to BS over a few beers. He asked me if I would like to shoot his bow? So I gave it a try. I did reasonably well, and hit his deer decoy a number of times at 10-35 yards. It was addicting. In mid August I decided; I got to buy a bow and start shooting to see if I am even worthy enough to try hunting deer with a bow. After talking with the Hunt WA forum, I decided to buy whatever bow feels best. Off to Cabela's I go! I ended up purchasing a Diamond Carbon something? Cost me $649, plus arrows, heads, gear, etc. I walked out spending $1200. The next day I started shooting into my practice block at 10-35 yards. I started to get better and better. I then moved out to 35-55 yards, and did well. I experimented with different heads (Montec, Slick Trick, Shuttle T) and arrows by Easton. I was ready...
Opening Week- Legal bucks all over, with a few dream bucks running around. Opening evening I missed a 4 point at 43 yards. Problem; I was shooting directly into heavy wind. My arrows were all over the place. I began to say to myself; this is going to be harder than I thought. Throughout the week I had several other encounters. I kicked up a big 4 point twice in his bed. I passed on shooting him the first time, as the shot placement was not good. The following day I tried to shoot him in his bed at 52 yards (he pegged me). I barely missed him. He ran up the hill and I declined to shoot again, due to poor shot placement.
Week Two- I started to figure out the deer patterns. I tried several times to put a stalk on. Problem; open country with zero cover. I could sneak in to about 80 yards, and the deer would peg me in the open. I began to get frustrated. Trying to hunt deer in the open country, no cover, heavy winds, and a first year archery hunter; is poor odds of harvesting a buck. I decided to buy a blind and setup in an area, where the same 4 point I missed on opening evening is coming out to feed. Every night he came out, but never close enough to get a descent shot. We got to know each other really well. He knew I was hunting him. It got to the point; he would see me a bolt off. Again; discouraging...
Week Three- I returned to Cabela's to ask questions. I knew I was making mistakes. For some reason I was shooting dead on with my practice tips, but hitting left when I put my broad heads on. I found I did not tune my arrows, which was throwing my arrows all over the place. I was not aware that I needed to do that. I corrected the problem, and I headed back to Eastern WA. I only hunted a few days. My father decided to come over to learn the new area for the upcoming Modern Firearm season. He was impressed with the quality and amount of legal bucks we were seeing. We hunted around a bit and had a few encounters. We decided to head home. Nothing...
Week 4- I head back over by myself. I am discouraged, to the point I did not care if I hunted much. I spent most of the week working. I only hunted 2 evenings and 1 morning. The second evening (this Thursday) I waited in my blind for 4 hours (until dark). Once again, the big 4 point came out into the area I was setup in. This was the first time he came up way to the right of me. The herd was about 200 yards to my right. They were feeding within 50 yards of my truck. It was like they were taunting me. I said to myself; "That's it, I'm done!". I was ready to waive the white flag and surrender. It set in, that I was NOT going to harvest a deer during the Early Archery Season. That was until this happened...
For those of you that know me personally; my wife was pregnant with our third son Jameson. Jameson was due to arrive in mid March 2014. Unfortunately we got some bad news in January 2014, that he would be born with a heart defect. My wife spent 1 month at the University of Washington Medical Center. Jameson was born on March 19, 2014. He was immediately transported to Seattle Children's Hospital. He did well at first, but his condition began to deteriorate. Jameson passed away in my arms on March 28, 2014. This was by far the hardest thing I have ever dealt with. Having your child pass in your arms is a tough thing to recover from. Over the next several months family would report rainbow sightings, during pivotal moments. Most recently we had a family reunion. Family and friends were discussing Jameson and the impact he left on them, during his short time with us. Out of nowhere a rainbow shinned over the lake. Events like this, have happened countless times. We believe it is Jameson's way of letting us know he is in heaven and safe with God. Sounds weird, but that is what we truly believe. Now back to the story...
So I am watching the 4 point feed next to my truck in discouragement. I asked Jameson "Where do I go to kill a buck?" No BS; I turn the opposite direction and there is rainbow. Below the rainbow is a monster 5 x 4 about 700 yards out. He is heading right towards a series on canyons. It was too late to stalk him. Hunting hours ended, but I knew EXACTLY where to go. I decided to stay to hunt the final day of the Early Archery Season. I woke refreshed with a positive attitude. I headed off to hunt. I am driving up the road, and there is the 5 x 4 feeding 48 yards to my right. Right where the rainbow ended. The buck is standing broadside, and ready to dash off. I ranged him at 48 yards. I got a little case of buck fever and had trouble knocking an arrow. My hands were shaking (bad timing). I draw my bow and let fly. Just as I let fly, the buck sprints off to the right. I shot left of him. The buck never stopped and headed to the bottom of the canyon. I'm thinking; I blew it! I cussed myself walking around trying to find my arrow. I look down into the wide open canyon and see the buck standing there looking at me. I range him at 194 yards. I decide to walk back to my truck, as it was not likely I was going to harvest this buck. I make it back to my truck. I sit there for 10 minutes and decide I am NOT giving up! I decided to drive to the top and park out of site. The wind was at my back, blowing directly into the bucks direction. I decide I will walk across the plowed field about 450 yards above him; circle around to get the wind in my favor. Once I got out there I hit a point where he could see me. He was feeding uphill (facing me) with his head down in the tall grass. I only had seconds to get past him without being seen. I decide to go for it. I made it! I proceed to circle around to the next draw over. Hoping he would feed his way over to me. Once I got over there, I determined I could sneak out on the face between the 2 draws to close the distance. Risky, but I was going to be in the wide open either way. I might as well close the distance and see what happens. I get in closer, to an estimated 125 yards. I decide not to press my luck and sit down on the wide open hillside. I can hear him crunching around in the tall grass below me. I scoot on my butt another 5 yards. I stop, and see his antlers in the tall grass. The buck began feeding down hill below me. I range him at 119 yards. I decide to stay put; hoping he moves in towards me. I sit there for 8 minutes as the buck turns and start feeding towards me. All he needs to do is lift his head, and he will spot sitting out in the open. Finally at 64 yards, he turns and starts moving downhill away from me. He has no idea I am there. I decide to take a shot. I felt like it is now or never. Sitting down; I draw back, put my 50 yard pin above his back, and let fly. WHAM!!!!! I hear the arrow hit and the buck takes off downhill. While running I see him favoring along. I knew I hit him good! I glass the bottom of the draw. If he makes it to the intersection; I am screwed. The intersection is the start of the next set of canyon leading to the road. He never showed up! I'm jacked! I call my father and let him know I shot a monster. Now it is time to find him. I move in to where I think he is laying. I move towards the tall grass and I spot something grey. I glass the area. I spot blood and his antlers sticking up out of the tall grass. I was ecstatic! I called my father back to let him know I found him. I waited 20 minutes before approaching him. I walk up to him and he is not moving. I had done it! I thanked Jameson, God, and shed a tear on the hillside. By far the most rewarding hunting experience I have ever had. I dressed him out and packed him straight up hill (500 yards) to the flat. I hiked back to my truck and drove down to where I left him. I walked out with the game cart and finished the pack. I hit him directly in the center of the liver. The arrow grazed part of his lungs and exited behind his front shoulder. He was a dead deer running on adrenaline. He dropped approximately 200 yards down from where I shot him.
The buck dressed out at 134 pounds. No head, hide, legs (joint down), or guts. Nice 5 x 4...
Now I can focus 100% of my time to getting my other son Sammy his first buck during the Modern Firearm Season. We will do it again in a few weeks!
Thank you Jameson. Until we meet again...

When I spotted him expired in the tall grass. Tough to see, but look for the red blood in the center of the picture.

Nice buck and cool picture. Welcome to the site. Maybe post a little about yourself with a story of your hunt.

We'll I live in Orting Wa and spend a lot of time mountain biking up in Hancock timber company land hunting off my bike and I duck hunt out at the coast and east. Also hunt idaho for wolves and whitetails. I usually bow hunt but just got a job with BNSF as a conductor so I went rifle this year. Bought the new HOYT Carbon Spyder and gave my old HOYT Ultratech to the little brother and that's what he used to take the Mulie, I was spotter he was shooter. Now about the hunt, we were bear hunting up there for three days before the archery opener and had only one bear encounter in the three days of hunting so we decided to switch gears and go after sum mulies for the one day of archery deer we had. I took him up the Gun Ranch road outside of Winthrop (not worried about telling wear always trying to help new guys out)and began glassing the steep rock faces at first light where we spotted this buck. We made a short stalk on the rocks behind sum timber and got within 45 yards when he decided to take the shot. I told him 45 yards he's moving towards 50 and I heard an arrow let fly. We heard a smack and I could see fletchings sticking out of his vitals, later found out the arrow had hit the opposite shoulder that's why no pass through on quartering away shot. Watched the buck run 50 yards and fell over. The drag was all down hill to the road. I had told my brother hey man we should just try to fill the tag on a doe since we only have one more morning but he wanted a buck after deer camp last year. He bought two deer tags and filled both on nice public land whitetails. I'll post a pic. I'm always looking to talk with people that hunt Hancock as well as I spend a lot of time up there! Thanks for the reply!

Meat buck
Why is it called a meat buck?
Generally because the deer was not shot because of his rack but because the hunter was just hunting for meat.

PathfinderJR still has his tag. Cross Country is NOT a hunter friendly sport. >:( Had a race on opening day out of town. He hunted Sunday hard (over 9 boot miles, 13 hours) and couldn't make it happen. Now he has practice every afternoon from 3:30 to 6pm until Saturday. Saturday practice from 7am to 9am... He's hanging onto a coveted varsity spot so he can't afford to miss a practice. No hunting until late Saturday morning...

Way to slay the black ghost!

Not the biggest antlers I have harvested, but a really big body and definitely the FATTEST deer I have ever harvested. I have never seen a blacktail with fat like this. He must have ate like a pig! I don't think his antlers match his body size. He was an incredibly big, healthy, and beautiful animal. I included a picture of the fat and a couple "as he lay" pictures.

Nice Muley I dropped at 200 yards off hand in Tonasket on Monday morning.

With the 270gr Speer gold dot soft point i'm shooting you can almost eat the hole. With any hornady xtps 240-300gr the wound channel is massive. 300gr Speer Uni core soft point there is no blood shot at all. The 444 is my favorite lever round with the 44 mag a close second. With any bullet 240gr-300gr class DRT. This calliber is a "Buck Hammer." Big and slow. Velocity is the enemy of edible portions.

I was headed back to my truck after hiking about 8 miles and seeing only does, I decided to take a trail back through some reprod to my truck, about 20 minutes before dark I noticed a deer walking in the reprod feeding with its head down, I waited for it to bring its head up and it didn't take me long to decide to shoot. I took a clean shot and he went about 10 yards and dropped.

I had to take a selfie since I was hunting alone, so not the best pic. Tagged a 3x3 Whitetail. I hunted the Goat Creek area behind Mazama on Monday and Tuesday morning and only saw one doe. And she walked in front of my truck while I was sitting in it, doors open, radio on, and eating some tunafish and crackers! Wasn't feeling good about my chances of finding a legal mule buck, so I decided to go check out an area near by that I know of which holds whitetails, and it is an any whitetail buck GMU. Right away while driving in I saw a few does. Parked the truck and hunted my way in for about 45 minutes. Turned around to go back to an area I wanted to sit in for the evening hunt and on the way I noticed some leaves on tree branches moving on a windless afternoon. Crept up over a little knob to get a peek and caught this guy munching away about 40 feet away. One shot to the pump house from my 30-06 and he only managed to get turned around before he dropped on the spot.

Yeah, I have seen the Mohawk before....I think they are beautiful. With that hide and that rack....it would be a wall hanger in my house. Congrats on a nice buck.
-
Took a friend out for her 2nd season looking to fill her first tag! Right away got into a herd with 5 legal bucks in it, told her to pick the one she wanted, 1 shot at 325 yards threw the pump house!
-
Well this is not the biggest deer ive ever taken but he sure means alot to me. At sunrise I was sitting beside a canyon when he showed up 5 does. He was somewhere around 500 yards and I moved in a hundred yards. Thats when I seen he was buck but I wasn't sure if he was legal. After watching him for about 10 minutes I finally see the thrid point and to the 400 yard shot ( longest shot ive ever taken at any animal). Well I hit quarting away before he went over the hill.

Was this buck shot after 5 pm last night? I ask because I watched a buck identical to this one yesterday and left the area with him and his 4x4 friend feeding in the open, wishing I would have bought the multi season tag.

This year I knew I wouldnt have a ton of time to hunt so hunting in an either sex unit I had decided I was going to fill the freezer with the first deer I saw providing it didnt still have spots. After opening weekend with my stepson I had seen one doe but had no shot. I went through a spot that he hunted both those days and this guy hops up through the reprod and vine maple and gave me a shot almost straight on at his chest. Entered through a shoulder, angled through the lungs and heart and found the slug under its hide a little foreward of the opposite side hind quarter. Was glad to get a buck to do a skull mount of myself. 30 yard shot, he didnt even react to being hit (thought I missed) but he crashed and burned after about 10-20 yards.

Great blackie IB!
For my benefit, what about IBs pic tells you its a blacktail? I see a mule deer laying on the ground. Not arguing, truly confused how people can tell by looking at pictures like this.
Thanks.

For one, the antlers. Compare size, shape, and color with mule deer. Similar, but pretty obvious differences.

I've seen a lot of mule deer bucks with that frame... Also seen a lot with the same rack color when wet... :dunno: :twocents:

2 for 3 this year in the opener (of course I was not one of the two). My wife shot a nice 2x3 in quite a bit lower elevation than we are used to and her dad shot a nice 3x4 up in the thinner air. Great early dear season overall........ and I guess I am waiting for late whitetail now.
-
I tagged out today. Have been hunting in the 448 near home. I had been hunting with my Dad from wed-sat. He almost stepped on a large bedded buck, but both were surprised to see each other. No shot was fired. I saw only one deer and that was this mornings buck. Took the 50 yard shot in steep country, aimed for the neck and it was over. I was 2 miles in behind a gate but had a game cart in the truck. After dragging it some distance, it became apparent I was going to be able to do this myself. Reinforcements were needed and they came. After retrieving the cart, the long slog up to the area began and it took 3 of us and a long rope to get my buck to the road and on the cart. My largest blacktail to date. Just wish my Dad could have been there with me.
-
Nice blackie!!
-
My sons last day buck. He made a nice 200 yard shot up hill @ 7:45am.
-
Lake Chelan Buck shot down low this year.
-
That's a great picture Transka.
-
My daughters second buck. Not bad for a 10 year old. I added a pre-season scouting pic. This buck gave the wife and I the slip on a 85 degree archery hunt. He nearly got away again as he only gave my daughter a head shot while sneaking through the sage. After a lot of anxious hiking/glassing, she did a great job of finding his and his buddies tracks which we followed for 20 minutes. A very steep hill slowed this heavy fella down enough for my little carnivore in training to pop one off. He wasn't the only heavy guy having trouble with the hill that day :chuckle:

Thanks Okano. I didnt even have a chance to put a tape on him. Crazy event. I walked up in some rocks to look over a large draw. After about five min of looking out over the draw, I looked down to my right and he was laying there at about 15 yards staring in my direction, but apparently not seeing or smelling me!

My cousin Jeremy and I went to unit 133 Roosevelt with high hopes of tagging a couple nice bucks and filling our freezers for the cold winter ahead. We hiked up the canyon to where the ridges and winter wheat fields meet to see if we could spot any deer walking back to the timber to bed down. I immediately spotted two bucks about 650 yards away on the other side of the canyon. Being too far for our ethical killing ranges we moved along down the top of the ridge, a couple of hours later my cousin spotted about 12 deer in the field, we worked our way up to them to find out it was a herd of 11 does and one 2 by 2 mulie buck. We couldn't grow a third point on that guy, so we decided to head back to the jeep and head down the road about 5 miles to another spot I know of. About an two hours before dark we jumped a buck, and I went sprinting down the draw to cut him off. While running down the draw I jumped a 6 by 6 mulie buck at 80 yards! I ended up shooting over the deer (Lord knows how) and searched for blood for about a half hour. Dejected after finding no blood we went up the draw to the wheat fields in hope of seeing him again. About 25 minutes before dark heading back to the jeep, I spotted a 4 by 4 buck coming out of the timber. With one shot at 125 yards with my m1917 enfield 30-06 the buck was mine. The buck didn't move a muscle and was dead instantly. He scores a 101 1/8, 17 inch outside spread, and weighed 200 lbs. I am real tickled and happy with the tasty meat the good Lord blessed me with! First deer I have shot with my rifle in 5 years as I have bow hunted for the last 5 years. I have been fortunate enough to get 19 deer in 19 years, yes 100% sucsess! A special thank you to my father Ed Gomez for teaching me the wonderful skill of hunting at a very young age!

Thanks guys! I still can't believe it all came together for me like it did this year. I am very lucky to have harvested a buck like that on a quick trip to WA.
Huntnnw, I haven't been on here much since living down here in Cali. Someone sent me a PM this year before the season and I got the Huntwa bug again... LOL
-
Miles,
I dont post much anymore on here, but that kind of deer brings me out of the shadows. Congrats. Would love to hear about the hunt. The mass and coloration on that deer is spectacular. What a brute. Hope you are having a shoulder mount done!! Hope you share a couple more pictures.
Thanks!

Here is my contribution for the thread. Not a monster and certainly not one of the big ones notorious for the area. I did miss a nice buck. But I was fortunate to Shoot this guy on the last day my hunt. A very memorable hunt, and All DIY. Even the 5 mile pack out was somewhat enjoyable knowing I had hunted hard all by myself. Here is my SE Utah Muley. :hello:
The Buck that is alive is the one that came out the other night just behind my house... :bash: Go Figure huh!
The other bucks are of my buddies Limited Entry Utah Bucks somewhere in Southern Utah...

I wasn't even planning on hunting this morning (it was my dad's turn with the gun), but he called this morning to say he had just spotted a buck some distance away. I got ready and walked out into the woods since he thought it might head onto our property.
Just then I saw two deer gallop across the neighboring field. Bummer.
I went ahead and found a good spot in the woods overlooking the valley, just in case. Sure enough, just a minute later this buck must have turned 180 degrees and headed back onto our property.
It was an easy 30 yard shot from there.
Yay! Can't wait to make more venison sausage!

Well after passing up 5 different bucks (2 spikes, 2-2 pts, 1-3 pt) my son went out and got this 2 pt all on his own. Mom dropped him off while I was at work and he was able to fill his tag. Now we can focus on getting ready for Montana!

This is what sisters do when you are trying to get a serious hunting photo!

Nice blackie there for your son 3nails.
He needs his own account, wish more kids would do this rather than parents for them. :dunno:

It is bad that the first time I looked at 3nails post I didn't even see the young lady in the background? Must be hunting season. :chuckle:

-
Probably just a water source? :dunno:

It looked like dirt almost, just seemed odd. :dunno:

Great guesses.. but nope, just a tub full of dirt!
-
Hunting partner and I had a good season. Both bucks were shot withing a quarter mile of and 27 hours of each other. Two days of packing meat 2 miles out and cutting them up pretty much wiped us out. Tags are notched and freezers are full. I got the 2X3 and his was a 4x4.
-
Your buddies 4x4 is perfect. Nice and symmetrical. Congrats on yours buck it's a dandie as well.
-
Halloween muley!

Here is an expensive deer the wife got during the general season. Unfortunately it was right at dark and the coyotes got to the cape before we did. She made an excellent shot at him running down hill at ~230 yds.

Bullblaster - good work you critter getting machine!

Had to battle a few other hunting parties (the price you pay for hunting open land) but was able to sneak this 3x3 out from under em and put him in the freezer. Not the "trophy" buck I was looking to bag this year but by far the best tasting buck to date! In fact cooking up some back strap as I type this :) Grats to everyone who tagged out and good luck to those still working on it.

Killed him yesterday at 1500, east of Kettle Falls. My first deer of my first deer hunt. Bear Paw Outfitters are the best. They worked real hard to make it happen. Had such a good time. He's a 4x3. He has a little nub that would be a good tine next year.

Not much of a story. Trying to locate a "new" area, took a wrong turn, the deer had been moving and he was chasing a doe through a fresh clearcut. Hopped out of truck, boom, pics, tagged, gutted & out of there in 20 minutes. "World's cutest baby 3pt" ;)

No I have not. Have a feeling forks aren't quite deep enough....he is 18" wide though.
What's your guesstimate?
-
My guess would be low 90's. It's hard to judge from pics, but the only thing I see is his left front forks are a little shallow. Good mass, good width, and good back forks. For a Sitka buck that is a wall hanger imo. Nice buck👍

Late Buck GMU 124

Congrats on a nice buck

My daughter managed to get it done during late buck. We only had a few hours here an there to find a buck,. Friday morning we saw a decent buck but he gave us the slip in the jacks. That evening we slipped back in the same spot and caught this buck creeping towards the timber a quick 180 yard shot off the bog pod rest and he was in the trees. He only flinched at the shot so we opted to back out and pursue in the morning. A good blood trail lead to our prize 20 yards inside the timber. She made a perfect shot right behind the shoulder.
-
My wife even got in on the action. She made a great 166 yard shot one shot harvest on this bedded buck and put him to sleep where he lay.

That will be close to making the book. Have you put a tape on him yet?
No I have not. Have a feeling forks aren't quite deep enough....he is 18" wide though.
What's your guesstimate?
Low 90's is probably a little low I'm guessing more like upper 98-105 range. My buck from last year went 88" after drying and hes not nearly as wide as yours and a 3X4.

Here's my 2014 general season Washington Mulley. He is a 8x9, 26.75 inside spread and scoring 181ish, Garth at Fidalgo said.
He was 445yds away an I shot him at 0800 opening day. I was hunting with a buddy in S.E Wa. I tagged him with a 6.5x280 ackley and 142 Matrix bullets. I didnt account for cosine, and it bit me in the butt by missing the 1st shot just high over the spine/shoulder, so he ran down hill more and I tipped him over on the second shot once he stopped sprinting. My pics don't do this buck justice, he is a real trophy for me.

Nice, got a story to go with it?
-
I do have a story. First off I would like to say I just went through and read up on the baiting forums on here and wow there are alot of opinions. This biggest buck shown here ^^^^ was taken on a tiny little piece of State land over bait. I have been hunting over bait since I started bow hunting in 2010 and have hours upon hours sitting in stands and freezing my but off. Also spending tons of money and time to get where I'm at now. Baiting isn't a "ace in the hole" so I would like this buck to show I did this after a long hard wait and on public ground in which some folks on here thinks baiting draws deer off surround public ground and into private areas. So booyah here is my story.
More of the private land I have been hunting over the years has been getting smaller and smaller due to farmers and landowners saying no more hunting, I'm sure you'll can relate I'm someway. So I decided to turn towards a piece of State land that is surrounded by super private dwellings. Went in, hung a camera at the corner of the state land and threw out some corn and alfalfa. After a couple of days I have seen the deer activity picking up with a couple of smaller bucks and the deer I'm holding in the picture. Hung the stand literally a couple days before Thanksgiving. Whoops. Got in there opening day, didn't do see much a except does so I went back home. The next day I decided to use a drag lone while walking in, climbed in my muddy stand and waited. Now thinking like a non professional I grabbed my phone and started Facebooking...well with my head stuffed into my phone I heard a snap, looked up and there he was staring at me at 22 yards. Ended up spooking him after I tried to make multiple transitions between the phone deal, my bow blah blah. Well he was gone. I was so sick I wanted to through my phone. DAMN YOU FACEBOOK! Well I ended up backing out for a few days. Letting things quite down. Went back in on December 5 with high hopes and my phone shoved way into my pocket. I noticed some action on the neighboring bluff, a couple of land buyers walking around talking loud and snuggling. I'm thinking so myself this is a beautiful day for them, congrats and for me it is spooking the deer. Haha. Well, the honeymooners left and things quieted down, to my surprise and we'll shouldn't had been since I am on State land and walking bow hunter staring at his feet was walking up on my stand. I guess that is the new way to bow hunt, staring at your feet. He got about 10 from my tree, looked up, about faced and silently walked out as if he thought I didn't see or hear him. We all know the tiniest twig that break we think Deer! I heard Elmer Fun a mile away. Well at that time of was 3 in the evening, I have a hour left and I though, no way I'm going to see anything after the honeymooners and Mr fud. But I told myself, I'm here, these deer might think that is me walking out and really Elmer fud, so I going to sit until dark. Well right at dark this big boy came right in again and I was ready. WHACK! 23 yard shot, pass through both lungs. So yea, there is my story. It was the biggest learning season I have ever had. Tons of knowledge gain this year. Thank you State land and I'm blessed we can bait. I'm getting hungry already!
-
Great story and great buck. Congrats!

This is my third attempt at posting my 2014 deer.
It was a long season for me but a really enjoyable one. I chose to spend some time hunting where I ride horses because I know there are bears and cougars in the area as well as deer. I did take a girlfriend to the Methow area for 4 days of hard hunting. She luckily gained 4 days off for this trip so we packed up the trailer and headed for my Sister and Brother-in-laws property to camp. We chose the second weekend of the season and I also had a doe tag to fill making it very busy. We spent most of the time hunting, hoping to get a bear, buck and doe. She had a lot of opportunity at a few nice 4 points but just couldn't pull it off I was never in the right spot and she was. One time she just didn't feel comfortable with a 300 yd. shot and missed after getting the BUCK jitters. We saw a lot of deer and she saw 4 nice bucks. We had to travel a bit to another unit to get my doe and that is the only tag we filled that weekend. It was great spending time with an awesome girlfriend hunting. We headed home late and had the deer hung in the butcher room by 11:00 that night. I continued to hunt near home the rest of the season. It would have been the best season for a possibility on a cougar or bear but I never saw one in spite of the time I spent trying. I hunted various areas depending on my time and energy after a day of work. The last day (Halloween) I almost didn't feel like going but the thought of hunting late season pushed my out the door. It was another wet warmish day and I didn't want to be wet so I stopped at the store to get a pair of duckwear that I needed for work and chose to wear them. My husband thought I was nuts but I was sitting and shouldn't make touch noise with them (they were bright blue lol). This time I decided to take the packboard with me so if I got one I wouldn't have to go back and get it. I planned on cutting it in half for two trips if I got one. I had to drive an hour, hike 20 minutes and sit 2 hours expecting a just before dark shot if it happened. It was raining but I was dry in my new bright duck pants. I loaded my rifle put my panny pack on grabbed my shooting sticks and slung the pack board over my left arm then proceeded to walk in. 2 minutes past the gate I'm looking up at the sky and I hear a deer bounding in front of me. Wouldn't you believe it, it's a buck! I didn't feel I could hit a slotting deer but if it stops I could so I got down on my knees, set the pack board down and put the rifle on the sticks. Lo and behold the deer stopped about 125 yds ahead quartering hard away. I had a clear shot of his neck and took it, down he went. Wow! I did it last day but even with plenty of light left. No need of the pack board so I took that back to the Surb. I took pictures, thanked God for the "short" 200 yd drag. I could have called my husband but that would have taken me time to get to cell service then an hour or so of waiting and I didn't mind doing it on my own. I tagged him, took some pictures, and field dressed him. Now the drag..... one, two, three, four.....fifty. I counted my steps pulling backwards then rested a bit and did it again. Half way I brought back the rest of my gear and then back at it. About 20 yds from the gate someone drove up just in time to help get him in the back of the Surb. I wished I would have asked him to take a few field photos but didn't think of it in all the excitement. He ended up being a brother of my husband's friend. My first Halloween buck and a nice young fat buck to fill the freezer. Here are a few pictures of my hunting season, it was fun taking pictures. We got to see the burn damage in the Okanogan also which I was awestruck by. Enjoy!

 nice bucks this year.
-
This past summer I saw this spike with his right antler broken and laying down on the side of his head. He was jumping around in the field behind the house, shaking his head and dragging his head in the grass. You could tell it was driving him nuts. I had a multi season deer tag and ended up shooting him during the modern firearms season with my bow. I got a couple cell phone pics of him shaking his head and trying to get rid of the antler.

Pretty cool to have a backstreet like that for a buck you killed! I like it

Late archery. It's cool to harvest one you've been watching since summer!
Nice buck, same genetics as that shed you posted, way to go.
-
I'll start my story with "I'm absolutely pleased with the buck I took this season and he was one of three that were on my hit list that I said to myself I would take on the first day I sat my stand". The year started out with two bucks I set my sights on, the one I ended up harvesting and a huge 5x5. I started getting pics of the two in July hoping they would hang around for late archery. The big 5x5 and I have history as this was the third year in a row I had pics of him. Sure enough they both hung around and I was still getting them on camera when I was getting ready for late archery. As a bonus a third mature buck started making appearances at my set up. I felt pretty good going into November knowing I had three bucks that I wouldn't hesitate to take a shot if presented with one. My first cam check in November was on the 8th and all three bucks were coming around and the last pic of the big 5x5 was on the 6th. I freshened up my bait site and checked cams one more time before season on the 24th. No sign on the SD card of the big 5x5 since the 6th but the other two bucks are still regulars so I'm still feeling ok. I was following the weather closely and decided to make my first sit the Saturday after thanksgiving as there was to be a huge temperature drop (with the wind chill it was -15 when I got in stand that Saturday morning) hoping the bucks would be up and hungry. The buck I got came in at 720 am and I had him packed out to truck at 1130. I swapped SD cards on the way out hoping maybe the big 5x5 had come by again between my last cam check and the morning I took my buck. Got home and still no big 5x5 so I wrote him off as moving counties and felt really good about my buck. On December 20th I went back to retrieve my camera for the year and, just my luck, guess who decided to show up 3 hours after I packed my deer out and for the first time since November 6th......yup.....big 5x5. Maybe next year buddy!
The first pic is the day the big 5x5 showed 3 hours after I left. Next two are of him, one in velvet. The last two are of the other mature I had on my mental hit list.

My back was sore, I had bronchitis and one day of late season left. I was actually hoping for a spike so the work would be easy! Next year I'm back to wishing for a monster :chuckle:

Can't remember if I posted this guy on here. Got him back from the taxi a couple months ago.

Thanks for posting him, great looking buck!!

My second archery deer. Just became a member. This sight has a lot to offer. I was literally ambushed by two deer approaching me, followed by a chain of three small four points that crept right up behind me. It was about a ten yard shot. Where this occurred, it is a mixed area with mules and a lot of white tail. It was very overwhelming to be on the ground with a lot of buck deer around. I think the de-scenting, good camo, and face-paint made it possible. I had a few encounters during the first week of September where deer walked away because of blinking and slight movements. It was a good hunt, learned a lot.

I never thought of that. Very interesting observation. What is it that made you think that? Something with the antler configuration? That would be cool if it was!

All in one day! Great year. Hope for a repeat!

Looks like the old guys outdid the young guys here :chuckle:. What's the story behind these bucks? Some nice ones in there and 4 blackies in a day is mighty impressive! Congrats!
-
All four taken around our home. The 4x was a big body bruiser taken in a pouring rainstorm in the morning. Had a puncture and bruised rib cage from fighting.
My brothers large 2 point is a revert. He was pretty old and had a really dark nice rack. Looks awesome on a European.
The boys got their 2 points later in the day behind the house within minutes of each other. We have about 400 acres private to hunt.

I love that big ol fork! Got any pics of the euro? You guys are lucky to have private blacktail land!

This is a fourteen year old buck I took out of the Desert 290 Unit in 2014.

Really fourteen? How can you tell? Awesome buck
-
If you harvest a deer in 290 the state asks you to send a couple teeth in for analysis. Thanks btw, it was a great week of hunting!
-
Really nice late entry wazzubarnes.

Wow, 14. Thats awesome. Cool buck too. It could be the dad or even grand dad of a 4 year old buck I got out there in 2012.
