I use the primary wing feathers for fletching wood arrows. Get quite a few from guys here in Oregon, but could sure use plenty more, especially the beautiful Merriam feathers. If you get some birds and have no use for the wing primaries, PM me and I'll give you my mailing address. I'll reimburse you for postage. Thanks!

Those look great. Have you used goose before?
-
Is there any special way you want the wing feathers? Can a guy use a pair of shears and lop them off near their origin?

I have made arrows fletched with goose, but most are with turkey.
-

Absolutely, just snip them off at the base. A mature tom usually has 8 or 9 primaries per wing, a jake might only have 6 usable primary feathers per wing.
-
dontcha just love the smell of burning feathers? This post brought back the times we made our own arrows.

I haven't used my feather burner in years...have a bunch of feather choppers that work great without the stink.

I'll even sweeten the pot. Send the entire wings and I'll build you a personalized wingbone yelper in exchange.

I will have a dozen plus wings I'll send down in a couple weeks. If you'd prefer, I'll cut the feathers you want and remove the 3 bones from each wing. I won't need as many yelpers as wings I send though. :chuckle:
-
Man those yelpers look cool!

Very nice work treekiller! I'll gladly send you several wings here soon. I'd love to have one of those wingbone yelpers.

Still need feathers? I'd love to get one of those wingbone calls. I'll even include a jar of home made sea salt. ;) I think I lost two or three off one wing though.

The wings are starting to roll in from folks...so if anybody has wings or even just primary feathers, get ahold of me.
-
Just wanted to let folks know that I'll be gone bear and turkey hunting for the next 10 days. I've been contacted by some members who have sent wings, or have wings they plan on sending me...thanks!
For anybody that have wings or kill a bird in the next week or so, just put them in a garbage bag and freeze them. Send me a PM and I'll reply when I get back home from hunting.
I'll start building the wingbone calls at the end of this month, already have quite afew cleaned and bleached out.
Thanks guys!

Is there a certain way to take care of the wings before you ship them and what is the best way to package them. We usually get half a dozen birds if things go right

emac...I usually tell folks to put them in a plastic garbage sack and freeze ASAP, then box them up to mail on a Monday if possible so they arrive before the weekend. Some guys prefer to bone out the wings and snip off the primaries...but still freeze the bones in a zip lock bag. The bones and feathers make a smaller package then the whole wings. As soon as I get them I bone them out, clean up, cut them down to shape and boil the bones.
Some guys will rinse blood off the feathers before it dries, but I can usually deal with it without too much effort.

Been getting lots of great wings/feathers this year from Oregon and Washington, appreciate them all.
If you have some wings and haven't already sent them to me, please keep them frozen for another week or two. I'm leaving tomorrow for a week of camping/turkey hunting/shed hunting/photography in northeast Oregon.
Thanks boys & girls! :hello:
-
I got some awesome primaries from Washington hunters last year.
Contact me if you'd like to exchange your wings for a personalized Wingbone call.
Good luck youth hunters!

I just peel my feathers and cut with scissors on my primitive arrows, interested in how you dye yours and do you sand the quill down?

I peel them for primitive arrows, but grind them for all other arrows. Have a jig I use with a sanding drum on my drill press.
I use several kinds of dyes, better variety and much better then the kool-aid treatment IMO.

I actually have all of your wingbone calls built, applying the finish today and hopefully mail them tomorrow or Thursday.
-
Just a heads up. If you have wings/feathers you'd like to trade for a wingbone call, please freeze them for a couple weeks. My wife and I are taking a trip to the red rock country of southern Utah and on down to the Grand Canyon. We have two weeks to goof off and hopefully find some drier, warmer weather.
Thanks to all the folks that have sent wings so far, much appreciated. I have quite a few calls already made, and will be busy at the end of May and early June getting them all knocked out for you folks.
-
Man those yelpers look cool!
They are! I had one done a number of years ago.
For anyone thinking about this, do it! You won't be sorry.

I gave it to my son today and he was super excited.
He called it an heirloom item for him!!!!!!!
I asked if he wanted me to put it with our turkey hunting stuff and he immediately asked if it would be safe in there........ I guess he's seem how I treat most of my gear. :-)

It's that time of year again boys and girls.

I know there's several hunters who have PM'd me about sending their wings. I'm leaving in a few days for a bear hunt, so if anybody has wings or kills a bird and would like to send me wings in exchange for a wingbone call, please keep them froze for another 8-10 days. My wife hates messing with them. :chuckle:
If they're already in the mail, no problem, I'll likely get them before I leave.
Good luck if you're still out slaying gobblers!
-
If any of you hunters have been waiting to send me wings in exchange for a wingbone call, go ahead and send them or contact me for my address. I'm done with turkey and bear hunts as well as a photo trip to the Redwoods!
Thanks, TK

I'm still alive and kicking. Glad you guys are back in the woods! So if you'd like to exchange your primary feathers for a personalized wingbone yelper...just let me know. Thanks, Ron
