Title: Will this pigeon trap work ?
Post by: Blcktaildreamer on August 16, 2015, 11:31:36 AM
I have about 15 pigeons taking over my grandpas barn and am wanting to trap them and use them to train the new pup. Will this home made trap work? I am planing to leave it open for a few days with some corn inside and then setting the trap. Any tips are appreciated.

Thanks

Do you need them alive? If not get a pellet gun and plink a few.

It might be a bit small, but it's not like the pigeons in your barn will get much harassment, so give it a go and see where you end up.

If they roost in the barn at night I would use a fishing net ...that's how I always done it ..as long as you can reach them ..u can always put an extension on the net to get to them ..

Check the trap often with that style of Bob door. They will figure out how to get out of there with it being on there level. Hawks can also get in easily. I use to use that style of trap for trapping for dog training but switched over to something else a while back.

I'm going to try it for a week and if that don't work I'll get out the net

They work great.  I like to pte bait them in a spot for a couple days then set the trap there with the grain.  I have filled those things so full you could not fit another bird in it!  :)

What kind of grain did everyone use? I'm thinking cracked corn

As long as you have something that attracts them I don't see why it wouldn't work. My pigeon house has bobs on it like that and the birds figure them out (both how to get in and out) fast. As others have said, check it often.

I wouldn't close all the bobs once they get accustomed to going in and out, leave 1 bob open a day or two then drop it.  Let them get used to pushing through the bobs with one open.

I would raise the wooden frame all the way up though so they can drop down into the cage and not have to push the bobs open as far,  also that'll give them less leverage to push trying to escape as they'll have to fly up to land on the frame and can't really push past them.   On my trap the bobs fall into a V slot keeps the bobs from being able to spread apart if pushed on from the inside of the trap.

It looks like the bob's reach to far back and night hang up on the birds! Myself I'd go with a long handle smelt net and a flash light at night. If you can climb up to their level, forget the net and take a gunny sack up with you. As long as there's no light other than your flash light, you can get right up to them and pick them up like apples off a tree!

I catch hundreds of pigeons a year. I dont see any reason why this trap wont work. Keep it open for a few days and then they should pile in. I use cracked corn and Poultry feed.... I've always had great results. Good Luck

:yeah: :yeah:

Pigeons are not the brightest birds in the barn.

They are easily caught at night as well with a net and light.

Yes it will work I catch lots with a lot rougher traps. I make the doors a little bit smaller and one piece. I find that some times the bird will try to back out and stab a bob through the neck. I make my doors out of 1in x 1in wire i cut about 2 inch slot about 4 inches long than roll the sides in so the birds see an opening and go in but can't get out. If you would like I could send a picture of my doors. erpauley@yahoo.com Happy trapping.

What trap have you moved to? I set one up just like this and I had two pigeons escape yesterday, and this morning the only thing in the trap was blood and feathers.

It will but some pigeons will start in and back out stabbing a bob through there neck. The best way to make a door is to cur some cage wire the a little larger than the door opening cur 1 inch out about 4 inches uo and roll the sides inward. I could send a pick if you want.
