Title: Goat Tag Raffle - Flooded
Post by: Bushcraft on March 23, 2016, 08:30:36 AM
The WDFW website doesn't reflect it yet, but the goat tag raffle got heavily flooded yesterday by a guy who still has some in reserve.  Evidently, WDFW only updates the website once a week.

As it stands now, it will take at least $25K to get 60% odds at this point if historical figures are any indication. And, at least $60K or more to get to 85%.  Of course, a guy that buys just one tag would win it all. Crazy.

Anyway, I'm just passing this along as a courtesy since it would suck for someone that's thinking about doing it to depend on WDFW's outdated website for the latest raffle tag count and then end up inadvertently screwing themselves on the odds...and whoever else that already laid down some dough for mountain goat conservation.

wow, between now and july to collect additional raffle tickets.  Is that his way of saying, don't bother in an attempt to increase his odds?  the raffles have definitely changed since they started.  I wish I could afford to play at that level.

No. It's more like the guy's way of saying, "Think long and hard about laying that cash down since the odds are a lot worse now for you than what the WDFW website might lead you to believe."

And, you can go to B.C. a few times for that kind of money.

There's only 147 showing but I can assure you that are a lot more than that as of yesterday.

Seems kinda ignorant to waste a bunch of cash on Raffle tags at this point when you could  wait for the Special Permit draw & potentionaly get the same Tag for pennies on the Dollar. :lol4: :lol4: :lol4:

Are these tags transferable?

Can you gift them should you win?

That's a good question.  It's under a WILD ID so I assume it isn't like the G-Tag transfer election.

I can tell you with 100% certainty that he's gotten bumped out of the G-tag bidding the last three years so he's not likely to give it up if he draws.

Great post, I think putting down that kind of money early is sending a signal to the other "whales" that they are going to have to lay some serious cash to increase their odds.  Whoever bought these wants the tag bad!  That being said thanks for the contribution to the state and I hope a guy who only buys one ticket pulls the tag, lol.

Perfect response Timber...  The wanna be Goat elitists in this State are out of control; stroking each others ego's and who knows what else.   I don't think the jedi mind tricks are working in starting this thread.  I will still buy my $200 or so worth of tags nonetheless.  Nice thing about the raffle is that everyone with a ticket gets a shot

:yeah:  The raffles should be capped at a certain # of tickets per person. If you want a goat hunt and are dropping alot of money, go north, or buy the auction tag. Everyone should be able to have the same chance...ya, ya i know that we all do in the draw.....  also, I am not saying I disagree with $ going towards our wildlife at all.. just don't agree with filling the tumbler...

Sorry.  This thread wasn't meant to be contentious in any way, shape or form.  Merely a courtesy since WDFW doesn't automatically update.

And you are absolutely correct, the beautiful thing about a raffle is that everyone has a chance if they want to participate.  That said, the same is true of the G-Tags.  There's nothing "elitist" about it.  At the end of the day it just comes down one's personal priorities.  Everyone's priorities are different.  And for what it's worth, I know the guys that have got it the last three years, and know of the guy that bought it this year.  They are all good people.

I agree. I'd much rather see a cap on raffle tag purchases than see 1 guy "buy" the raffle. Folks can say everyone has a chance but when a guy drops $10k on raffle tickets, that pretty much destroys most everyone else's odds of winning it.

I was there when the auction tag was sold this year. Did you get outbid? Oh, and I agree re: the gentleman that bought it this year. He made a few nice donations. Not just the goat tag purchase.

So if it is going to take $25K to get a 60% chance at the tag I assume that means you dropped enough to buy 3,000 tickets, more tickets than were sold all of last year.  Am I reading into this correctly?

That's a fair question Grundy.

To be perfectly honest I deliberately used the third person since it seemed more like a light-hearted courtesy than a horn tooting.  Quite frankly, I was surprised that in this day and age the WDFW website doesn't update automatically.  For crying out loud...it's 2016!  I'd be a little ticked at WDFW if I went into it not knowing what the updated odds are, only to find out three or four other guys bought a chunk at pretty much the exact same time.

Regards,

Allen

I'm not rich. I'm just a guy that works his butt off and has a very specific set of prioritized goals and objectives in life.  One of them happens to be hunting goats in this state and being able to enjoy the DIY experience with hunting buddies over the course of the fall season instead of a 5-7 day "hurry-up-golf" type of guided hunt in B.C. where you just show up, hike up and shoot the one a guide points out. Could someone that buys one tag win it? Absolutely. In fact, that may have happened last year but I don't know for certain.

I appreciate that Bushcraft came on here to say that he dumped a bunch of tickets into the game and hope that he has grand success and shares it with us.  But I do agree that I wish that they would cap the buying on these raffle tags at set figure of tickets available to any one individual.  But until they do, I hope it is guys like him that win, participate and share

It sounds like you have a plan and I wish you luck.

It will be interesting to see if this tactic works.  I am not sure I would have told the world about it and maybe dropped the cash at the last minute.  This may work and keep others from spending $60 or $120 on a few tickets, only time will tell.  This may come down to you and another big spender taking your chances at a coin flip for the tag with each of you buying 49% of the tickets and the other 2% going to the smaller investors.

I do hope if you or whoever is lucky enough to win the raffle that you keep us in the loop and let us follow along.

It's a good poker move.  In the game I've played in,  sometimes the guy with the big bank will over bet early on hopes of pushing everybody out. In poker, he's called a bully.  We all don't really like it at the table, and all wish we had the chips to pull it off ourselves.
Probably totally different in the raffle, though.

The raffle's purpose isn't equality. It's revenue. With the idea, if not reality, that the one animal cash haul is dedicated to that species development in the state.  Caps to x tix per person are going to cut the haul significantly. It's "likely" to be won by a thicker than average wallet, but odds on one ticket are better than a number of ordinarly special permit draws.  If I didn't have kids in high competition sports I could be dropping big into these things.... instead, OIL permit draw here I come.

The difference is that you can't bluff.  You can tilt the table with real tag purchases and that puts a huge dent in the thought that one or two guys might have been able to get 75% odds.  They still could but now it takes a lot more resources.  It's definitely an aggressive move, but there's no bluffing.

Now if the state wanted to protect maximum sales.... they could chose to post NO updates on tickets sold until the moment of the draw. hmmmm  Now every guy hoping to tilt the scales has to go blind.

Agreed, it was a bit of a stretch...  :chuckle:

I have no problem with raffles and unlimited ticket buying opportunities.
Draw - everybody has relatively the same odds (very bad) at a very low buy-in
Raffle - Increase your odds by increasing your buy-in, but still not a 100% guarantee
Gov Tag - Bid more than the second place guy and your odds of winning are 100%

There's room for all three methods.  Trying to limit raffle tags to make it more like a draw defeats the purpose - shaking down the medium money players who would otherwise sit on the sidelines of the Gov tag auctions.

Interesting point about publishing tickets bought.

I will challenge your math:

$25,000 to get 60% odds means there is a total of $16,666 including the 147 that already show on WDFW's website.

$60,000 to get 85% odds means there is a total of $10,588 including the 147 showing.

Both can't be true?

Sorry for any confusion.  It was quickie math for the purpose of brevity.  I'm including another 4K in reserve plus 500ish tags bought by others in increments.  Here's a chart of diminishing returns.

Sorry for any confusion.  It was quickie math for the purpose of brevity.  I'm including another 4K in reserve plus 500ish tags bought by others in increments.  Here's a chart of diminishing returns.
This is a start but what is your input data? Where is your margin for error?  What are you entering for unknown number of tags for others? Are you using a law of large numbers or past 5 year tags sold, 10 year?  I need more info lol.

I like the graph, but it doesn't help without knowing your input factors. Details man detail ;)

This is funny. I have a friend that said he just dropped $10k in the goat raffle. Can't wait to see the new numbers.

I've been thinking of dropping $6K in the drawing.

But if someone wanted to give me $2,000 of their reserve gambling money I could be persuaded to put it on a sheep or moose tag instead. :chuckle:

I buy 1 ticket.  My odds are infinitely better with 1 than 0 tickets, and I can't buy enough tickets to improve my odds appreciably.  1 ticket keeps the dream alive until the raffle is drawn.

Good luck to whomever draws the tag, it will be a great hunt, hopefully we'll get to read the story. Goat tags have really gone up in demand, I wished I could have afforded a governor tag 5 or 10 years ago. I'll probably have to go to Alaska or BC someday, it's cheaper up there.

Buckjunkie,

I don't know Coachcw and I don't presume to speak for him, but I don't believe for a second he was "taking a shot" or meant anything untoward with his comment. Rather, I simply construed that he thought Al Shearer might not feel inclined to traipse around in the steep, cliffy stuff that mountain goats call home.  Maybe he does, maybe he doesn't, but I don't think Coach meant anything by it.

Absolutely   I have been on half a dozen goat trips to BC.  Many of those guides have become good friends of mine.  Yet I would still rather be hunting on my own, at my own pace and sleep and eat what and where I want.

I had a particular big billy I wanted.  I know for certain I could have killed him if I had packed a tent up on top of the mountain and just waited him out.  But, in the limited time and with all the liability concerns for the outfit we couldn't hunt that way.  I like to take things in and just absorb the whole experience.  That's hard to do when you have just seven days and you're on a leash.

Plus, I find there is something special about hunting my back yard.  Getting to experience something few here will ever get a chance to do.  I'm fascinated by the animal, but the experience is what I am after most.  Just hard to do with a guide and a set schedule.

Now you got me thinking of challenging Bushcraft for the tag again.  I have been a runner up on this tag multiple times.  I know how he feels.  But I'm not getting any younger or skinnier. :chuckle:  I'd like my chance too. ;)

Radsav,

If (and it's a big if) I luck out you should come with.  Given the number of goat hunts you've been on it sounds like you could be a wealth of knowledge/experience.  When it comes to OIL critters, it's all about the experience and time spent with friends both old and new in the backcountry that makes the hunt.

This is my take from hunting. I've hunted so long by myself it's a new adventure sharing it with other like minded folks. I wanted my goat hunt to be memorable and I really wanted to prove to myself that I could get it done myself. I treasure the adventure, the hunt, the pursuit, not the kill.

Exactly.  I don't think he wants to spend that much or he would have just bought the auction tag and been guaranteed to win.  Right now he has 1666 of the 1883 tickets.  My guess is if sales go like they normally do he will still have at least half of the tickets giving him a 50/50 shot at winning.  If he doesn't win he is out the $10k and would have to try again next year.  If he loses again the $30k to just buy the auction tag starts looking good.

This is quite the gamble and should be fun to watch.  It is like standing behind the guy at the $5k minimum blackjack table.

I hope it works out.

It has updated on Mondays for as long as I have paid attention.  Would be nice if it updated daily, but I assume that would raise the price of tickets or decrease revenue.

1883 tix sold as of now.

That is still below the annual average.  But I do think it is high for this early in raffle purchases.  If I remember right we didn't see it break 1500 last year until after permit app results were posted.  Maybe we will break the 2009 record!

Among other last minute odd-destroying flood fiascos, the 2009 "record" with multiple people piling in unbeknownst to one another (thereby screwing each of their respective odds) is precisely what I was hoping to avoid with my early courtesy announcement.

There is no good defendable reason in this day and age that the raffle ticket numbers can't be updated in real time.  Perhaps WDFW does it this way to try and make more money off everyone on the raffles by under-representing the actual odds.  Of course, Lady Luck will have the final say, but someone will have to dig deep and check their sanity in order for them to obtain an 85% chance (even more if I use the reserve set aside). If someone else spoke up early, I wouldn't have tried.  No way would I take those poor odds.  It would be far easier and a 100% certainty to just call Bolen Lewis or Milligan and go after a giant world class billy with some good guys.

On a somewhat related note, the moose odds appear to be the easiest/best option to flood at this point, particularly since there are two tags at play in the same raffle. If I weren't completely bonkers for a goat right now, I'd be hammering that moose raffle since I know where a great Shiras bull likes to hang out. He's bound to be bigger this year unless the wolves got him.

There are a bunch of good raffles that still have low sales compared to what is typically sold but there is a ton of time left to buy them.  I am sure you are going to see numbers start jumping the first week of July as guys start positioning themselves in the categories that have the best odds.

My guess is we are going to see the highest raffle ticket sales this year.  Going to be interesting to watch the numbers jump.

:yeah:

Has anyone ever won more than one special permit OIL in the same year?  Obviously the odds of such a multi-OIL miracle happening are exceedingly small, but I'm not sure it would be all that problematic unless one's time was severely limited, i.e., vacation days.  At a minimum and assuming a guy is in good shape and had knowledgeable hunting partners that could help glass, a sheep hunt in this state is about a three day deal (particularly the Cali's) since everyone knows where they are generally located and the bios are very helpful.  I imagine moose would be a few more days due to their preferred thicker foliaged habitat...unless one was holding out for a giant.  Goats could be as easy as a day hike if you just want to get one (particularly a nanny, which I vehemently disagree with taking), or a multi-month game of hide-and-seek if trying to go after one in particular with a bow...and still might not get it.   :'(

I met a guy out in the boonies who had drawn the Southeast or Northeast multi-animal raffle package AND a modern firearm big bull tag in the eastside unit that I hunt.   Wowser!  I asked him how in the world he managed to pull it all off and he said it was relatively easy with the help of bios and friends, the hardest hunt being the big bull hunt that he was on.  As an aside, he was quite possibly the happiest guy I've ever met.  ;) :chuckle:

So we've reached the 2015 total sales mark and still have a month and a half to go.  My guess is this easily gets to the 2014 mark and maybe higher.  Looking forward to what total sales are and if this tactic works in your favor Bushcraft.  I hope it works out in your favor.

Thanks Rainier10,

Hmmm, that could become an expensive donation to WDFW. :dunno: In the meantime all my appendages are getting tired of being crossed all the time.   :chuckle:

Quite frankly, it's absurd that WDFW does both the permit and raffle draws so late in the year.  If people are going to buy a special permit ticket and/or one or more raffle tag tickets, they are going to do so whether it's in January or July.  Let's get it on already so we can all lock in plans for the rapidly approaching Fall hunting season.

Regards,

Allen

I heard a few black goats have been spotted in one of the northern most units.
Very rare.
Good luck.

Which unit?

Could an odd or disreputable member of a goat family call himself the "black sheep" of the flock?

There's no way the ticket sales are accurate.  Those are the final numbers from last year, in every category.  Do you know the odds of that occurring?  Something is not right on the webpage.

Not only were they late updating the figures by two weeks, they posted the wrong figures. Your and my license, tag and tax dollars at work ladies and gentlemen.

Does it really matter now? I guess it really matters at the end, but with a couple months left, how important is it to know now?

I think it's important to know.

Perfect example.  I was looking at them yesterday.  The SE option had 222 permits sold so far.  While I've never purchased a ticket, I was tempted.  If that number is 2000, I'm out.   :twocents:

Punch in the winning numbers from last year and see how many other tickets the winners bought.  One guy bought one ticket and won.  Another bought ten per category and won.  ""Flooding" the market doesn't always work.  It does help increase odds but in the end they are still "odds".

Apparently I've been runner up three times.  What do you think the odds are for that? :chuckle:  Buying more just makes me a first place loser!

If the letters they sent were accurate it is.  Though it could have been someone at WDFW that just hates me :dunno:  Not consecutive years.

I think it would be financially better for the state if they didn't show the count at all. Maybe more folks would participate.  I would if I couldn't see that someone just dumped $10k into it. Why would I bother spending my measly $100 if I could tell that someone has already put 100x that amount into the pot?

I'm not so sure the state would make more money unless they changed a few things.  The problem with regard to making more money has everything to do with raising more awareness and increasing the ease of actually buying something.

In the case of special permits, everyone can easily buy them online when they buy their license and tags.  Conversely, due to state gambling laws WDFW forces people to go to an accredited point of sale to buy raffle tags…and do so in person.  Why they consider the special permit not gambling and raffle tags as a form of gambling that needs to be regulated is beyond me but probably relates to the lack of limitation imposed on the number of the latter. Most people are inherently lazy and procrastinate (myself included!), which means a good sized percentage of people that might buy raffle tags don't simply because a) they aren't aware of it to begin with, B) don’t understand the shifting odds, C) are too lazy to go buy one and/or procrastinate and miss the deadline.

Then, there is the aspect of odds.  One can easily review the odds of the special permit in the game regs, both online and in the paper regs.  The same isn't necessarily true with the raffle tags since those figures are only available if one wants to dig around online.  In either case, the purchase of 1 permit or 1 raffle tag results in the odds of winning being essentially zero.

Buying special permit apps is looked upon by most people as just something one does knowing A) they have to do so if they want to continue to build points which supposedly increases one's odds, and B) that lightning might strike and they'll win an opportunity to hunt in a particular unit.  Conversely, there is no build-up of points with the raffle...one increases their odds simply by buying more raffle tickets...but they have to be committed to shelling out some serious dough and buying a lot of them to get a meaningfully high enough chance of drawing (let's say 85% for example).  I suspect that the people that want to be reasonably confident of owning at least 85% of the raffle tickets going into the draw deadline simply aren't going to participate without knowing the odds at any significant level for the simple reason that it could quickly become FAR, FAR more expensive to reach 85% compared to simply just buying the Governor's tag or a B.C. goat hunt outright.  I know I certainly wouldn't.  And, nearly everyone I've spoken with that's tried this strategy successfully (and not) feels more or less the exact same way.

There is a lottery-type of gambling (which I almost never do since I philosophically view public lotteries as an egregious tax on the poor and the stupid) and then there is another type that is more akin to taking a highly calculated risk (which I've strived to do all my life).

The bottom line is that it's anybody's guess as to which would make more money for the state (which I'm not sure is necessarily a good thing since private orgs could be more effective in many respects), but it's something interesting to discuss.

HE  8) said that when the drawing results were finally posted (he said that the drawing results were about a month later than first scheduled  8) ) he was in 7th place on the list. Go figure! Oh well HE  8) once swung for the fence in the majors.  :)

For what it's worth, there is value in buying a raffle ticket beyond the hunt itself.  For me, dreaming/thinking/planning/scheming about these hunts is almost as much fun as doing it.  Well, maybe not almost, but it still is pretty fun.  At any rate, application season is a fun time for me...basically it starts in December with the limited draw sheep units in Alaska and ends late in the summer after all the draw results have been posted.  And every time I buy one of those stupid tickets or put in the application, I'm buying a little hope.  Deep down, I know I probably won't draw a super-premium tag this year, but it's still fun to dream! Let the snarky comments begin!

Damn, youre not joking!  Ne bug game ticket sales basically doubled the last day, and looks like moose got hit hard too.   :bash:

Your odds are a little better than they could have been. Lol.  I stayed out of it.   Good luck Bush.

Thanks Bone!

There were some sizable last minute jumps in a few of the raffles.

Besides the ones I added on Friday before hitting the trailhead (and I'm glad I did!) it looks like 284 additional goat tickets were bought between Thursday morning and the Friday deadline.  I'm sitting at a shade over 65% right now.  Less than what I was initially hoping for, but it's better than a coin toss I suppose.  ;)

Fingers crossed...back to work.

A good cause that saw a drastic increase in sales over last year.  I don't know if that is due to more expendable income this year, if this thread caused the increase in sales or if sales were normal and only bumped by Bushcraft's early dump of money into the mix.  Whatever the reason in the end someone is going to get a great hunt and the money generated will hopefully go to good use.

The Wild Sheep Foundation drawing for the Rocky Mountain Big Horn Sheep was July 15.
But still no way to check numbers for the other tags for 2016.

For the first time ever in the history of WDFW, they've actually done something efficiently.

Unfortunately, I'm not one of the lucky guys that's going to get a call this year.  Heck, I didn't even get a second place slot.

Fortunately,  I've got an amazing wife, great health, incredible friends, an awesome yellow lab and a thriving financial planning and investment management business with some great clients…and a few other successful draws to focus on this hunting season.

Life is good...Congrats to everyone that stepped into the arena and took a chance!

Best regards,

Allen

So I call W DFW about the raffle draw he takes my wild wild ID number and has me hold on for second. He comes back and asks if my phone number matches what he had and I said yes, he says you will be getting a phone call but they are pretty busy right now.! Im about to have a heart attack thinking I am getting a phone call, then he says, I'm sorry, IF you drew you will getting a phone call!  Damn, I was so close! 😳.    Anyway, he said they are still making calls, so we still have a chance!

I know you replied already saying all the things you were still thankful for, but my question is was it worth the money?  What would you do different next time or would you do it the same?  I have never bought one raffle ticket let alone hundreds.  Just wondering now that you have been through the whole process what you are thinking for the next time or if there will be a next time.  Do you spend the money on an out of state hunt instead?

If I was going to "flood" one this year I think I'd have to go with moose.  (2) tags available and around 2,500 tags sold at $6/ea.

After experiencing two Maine moose hunts that only give you a 6 day season, I'd LOVE to have  Sep. 1 - Dec. 31 season dates.  That long of a season sure would take some pressure off.

On second thought, the NE big game only sold 520 @ $17.00 each and that includes a moose tag.   So for $8,840 you could have a 50% chance.  Not to bad, plus you get long seasons on two other species.

This was going to be my year too. I'm young (ish), money to burn, no spouse to tell me no. I usually get 100 tickets a year. Was gonna really up my game this year.
Then life throws you a curve ball and I end up buying a new house. Haven't even closed yet. UGH!!!No way I can throw down serious cash now.
I want to see what Mnt Goat tastes like! And I love backpacking in those areas.

I just wanted to share my sob story.

I'll see if I can work out a way for you to see what mountain goat tastes like if you cook some for me too. It won't be the same as your own goat, but we can make it happen.

   Can't wait to see the write up and pictures of the hunt!  Enjoy it, those "big" hunts seem to go by way too fast.

Ive seen the food on here you cook. If I draw a goat tag I would be honored to let you cook it up for me for a share of the meat!!

I'd probably take you up on it.

That would be cool. I'm a firm believer that not all meats need to taste like beef or chicken. So even if it's "gamey" "funky" it just needs the right treatment. Cooking for people is always fun.

Pretty sure Gringo bought and won last year with one ticket.  I don't think that ticket is valid again this year so unless he bought a ticket this year he technically has no chance of winning putting Pman way out in front as far as odds of drawing.

Oh yeah, baby. This is all over but getting the tag in the mail!  :chuckle:

I won't be buying any more raffle tickets. I get that $90K is a big contribution to the WDFW. But the money will all go to paying ranchers for dead calves and wolf collars. None of it will be used for habitat improvements. They won't miss my $18.

It is a big deal, your  $18 matters, it is all relative.  These are a defacto auction and the SALE of the "states" animals that they are supposed to be managing for the people.  It's a huge deviation from the North American model of wildlife conservation and  it is wrong!  It is also trending in a very very bad way in Wa (as is our odds weren't bad enough). I don't hate on the players (hunters), I don't like the game though.  @Rosscrazyelk raised some very valid concerns and wasn't met with a bunch of support. There are other *funding mechanisms* out there that will fall closer in line with the model.  A bunch of animals were auctioned off by the king you the highest bidder both in the raffle and the auction and  those bidders will have expanded opportunities next year, as they have nearly every year in the last decade.

Well you still have a chance if they decide not to hunt or something comes up. However since it looks like the winner bought 100 tickets they are probably going to use the tag. I keep hoping one of these days one of these states will hook you up with a tag and we can have a killer goat thread from ya.
