Share your 2017 sheds here.
Bucks are starting to drop. Don't push deer in order to get your first sheds of the season, they are not going anywhere! Good Luck to all!

Thankful to stumble upon this today!

Nice find! I'm excited to get out and start looking this year, but the roads are still drifted over to my favorite spots...I may have to try some new areas for now
-
Pretty tough to get right into there bedding areas in 2 feet of snow without pushing them.

I agree. Its pretty tough going in a lot of places right now for them, I think its best to leave them alone for a bit.

I agree. Kind of a catch 22 by the author with the pic, huh?

I think that with the right circumstances, you can shed hunt this time of year, even with the conditions we have, and not bother animals, but its VERY tough to do. It involves a lot of glassing from a distance, and patience. Find the deer, find the horns, wait for the deer to move on, go get the horns. Most won't give it that much time.
-
Great looking shed! Do you happen to know the elevation you were at.

Why does everyone assume that to find a shed this time of year means you're pushing deer? As 7mmfan noted, it IS possible to to do it without pushing them. Who's to say that the author didn't glass and wait for the deer to leave before moving in on that shed? I found my first shed last year in January, right along side a paved county road, with no animals in sight. I get sick of the holier-than-thou attitude about this every year. Everyone I know who shed hunts (including myself) are very diligent and cautious to not to bother the animals. We belong to conservation groups, do volunteer work days throughout the year and respectfully hunt deer and elk in the fall. The herd's welfare comes first in every aspect. So it would be nice just once to not have to listen to a pious lecture just because someone found a shed in January. Just my :twocents: I know my posting this won't change anything, preach on...

Hey genius, my comment was made after the author tells us not to push deer then posts a pic of a fresh shed he found in the deep snow in a bedding area. No preaching here, just stating the true definition of the pot calling the kettle black.
Looks like a nice bone too

Congratulations on all your conservation and volunteer work. A little defensive don't you think. I helped an old lady cross the street today, doesn't mean I get to chase the next one with my truck. The OP stated he stumbled on the horn, doesn't sound like he was gassing for hours and then went and got it after the deer left. Either way congrats again on your conservation groups and all your volunteering.

So sad what this simple thread ( there is 1 for every year) turned into in less than 10 posts :bash:
-
It was a beautiful day. Decided to take a drive and explore a new area. Found these from last year. I'd sure like to see the stud they belong to.
-
Thanks @ mfswallace !
I found that to be rather disappointing also!!! This shed was found from a plowed road while walking my dog on a leash.
Good luck to anyone that has the spare time to bitch about other people.
-
Nice find Eric  hopefully there were no animals around cause everyone knows if you get within a quarter mile of them when it's cold they will fall over and die :chuckle:

I think that most experienced hunters/outdoorsman know better. What I fear is the whole hoard of newbies spurred on by youtube videos who see a report of fresh bone hitting the hills and running deer and elk all over hell's half acre.We all know the sight of a human in the winter isn't going to kill these animals, but a bunch of hipsters with new boots, Firstlite clothing out from under the Christmas tree and a lifted Chevy running after them hoping the horns will fall off might. So, based on that, I feel we as a group, owe it to ourselves to practice a little caution when talking about shed hunting, especially this time of year. That's all.
-
Go easy on the lifted Chevy..... No need to get personal.

Sorry for the rant and the perceived defensiveness. Just get sick of seeing the shed thread derailed by the Internet police. Maybe now that the drama is done (hopefully) this thread can go back to its intended purpose of posting 2017 sheds. Congrats again to all of you finding sheds!

Gotta admit though that the OP cautioning everyone else and then posting a pic of an empty bed in the snow with the shed. Seems a bit hypocritical ;)
Then a few posts later mention it was off the road with a leashed dog. :chuckle:

Yep... right after a couple detracting posts and guys then saying let's get this thread back on track u jump back in to get the last moronic defense of your internet police drivel. I've seen plenty of animals bedded next to roads, why do you think road hunting is so popular :chuckle: and now I'm guilty of being a friggin moron for bloviating so :tung: this is tongue in cheek so no need to keep it going and I won't be contributing to this thread again unless it is to post shed photos

You're pretty sensitive. If you look at my post it was questioning me being the moron not you. But carry on with your pantie bunch. I'll be interested to see where this one goes.

wont be long in WA there will be a shed season or certain areas having dates. Im all for it in some areas..complete joke watching these idiots chasing elk across the countryside and they are still packing!

I think a mod needs to clean this page up. It's for posting pics of antlers and giving people props for finding them, not bickering... :dunno:

If you want to debate the ethics and morality of shed hunting and when is it too early or the right time to pursue the "brown gold" go to here.

That is a nice shed! Want to tell us about the swamp?
I'm in an area I haven't explored much before. I was soaking wet. It was getting dark and I got a little turned around. I was going in the right direction but coming out in a lower spot. My phone died, and with it my map. It was pouring, getting dark, and misty from the rain and I thought it was a field. Took 2 steps and I was up to my waist. Added some water to the inside of my boots but by then I didn't care. Walked around the swamp which was a pain (and painful) in the dark because it was thick and nasty, but I was worried the swamp might be deeper in the middle. A lot of trouble for a horn but I'm going back tomorrow to look for the other side.

Yeah I was looking around an area some elk summer in and found that little guy about 10 minutes after parking the truck. My eyes were still fresh! Last time I can get out for awhile.
-
Found a little one last night, it's a year or 2 old, was laying in the mud on the side of a creek.

Getting stir crazy with the winter conditions in most of wa, and bored staring at ferns and salal in the BT woods close to home. We decided to take a trip to Oregon look at some different area and better weather. Learning a new spot seems to always have a hiccup or two and this was no exception, but we did manage to pull up a few including this good 4 with an eyegaurd.

Went out for a few hours today. No deer sheds, but I did find my first elk shed. Can't believe I found it. Only a little bit of the bumps on the base was showing. Can anyone see it in the first picture?

Bottom right corner of the picture? Nice find, the only spike shed I've ever found was laying on top of the snow.
-
The base of it is in the circle and the rest goes to the left under the leaves.

First blacktail shed of the year for me, as I found it today. I think it's fair to say it hadn't been down long.

Saw 9 mulie bucks, all still packin. Even watched two of em sparring to try and shake horns, they'd fight for a few minutes then jump around shaking their heads, then spar again...

Went for a walk with Grandpa, lucked out on one of my first sheds, I never find sheds. I think I have found less that 10 sheds in my life, this is the biggest deer shed I've ever found

You think that thing died from the branch/tree?
The Branch was not very heavy - I think the skull has been there a few years, under the cedar tree collecting debris. Could have been clobbered though, hard to say,

Talk about blending in! It would be very easy to walk by that without seeing it.

A couple years back a guy I know found a real nice blacktail skull and body where the head was stuck in the V of a tree, apparently dying when the animal was rubbing on the alder.

I finally got a few hours to hike around with my little brother yesterday, it felt so good just to get out in the sunshine! We each found one shed, his is the 3 point and mine is the MONSTER spike :chuckle: Can't wait to get back out there!

Awesome man. Hancock buck by any chance?
-
Wow, what a huge BT Lewy! Pretty cool to have history with the same buck like that. I have a big guy that I've been finding for multiple years now. It's fun to see the changes/similarities over the years.

Another one I like, big 2x3, 20+ mains. Have him a couple times as well.

Dandy's. Love the main beams

The third point switches sides, I love it

Those are actually both fresh sets from this year, but are very similar and from the same area.

That's cool. Very similar genetics

That dark chocolate set is sweet. Cool double eye guard
-
lewy, are you by chance using a dog? I find sheds here and there but have never found a match set of blacktail sheds, mule deer yes but not blackies. The dang thick cover seems to just absorb them.

No dog, just a good year for matching up sets I guess. Some years its the opposite

Iv always had a tough time with finding a match to a blacktail shed. Typically when i find one i just keep on going, in the past i have spent hours looking around the immediate area and have never found the other side so now i just keep on moving. Hey darktimber, did you find your set at the base of that rub?
-
That's cool!
-
Thank you! But no i didnt, he was tearing up everything around that area. I was lucky enough to just stumble upon them on the way back to the truck. I always look under and around rubs but never have found any sheds next to one

Went on a long drive yesterday then into some deep nasty stuff to find this one. The dog and I are still sore.

You are freakin' killing it!
-
What a cool horn!
-
Thanks. Burning a lot of boot leather. Walking a lot slower. I've found some cool horns but I think this one is the coolest. It's not a fresh one. Sure one mature old deer. The stuff I found it in was almost impossible to walk in.
-
What a pig! Nice one!

Great find Eric M. Love the mass!
I'm zero for eight trips. :'(

Spotted a TIP from the road, in the upper left corner.

First time finding sheds with my daughter - we spent the whole day driving and hiking around wherever she wanted to go and talking about everything a 5 year old can think of to talk about. I spotted them and guided us in the general direction until she "found" them. Made a memory that will last my whole life I think and a memento to last for her as well.

I do the same with my 5 yr old. It seems like he's always asking me if he can hold one of the sheds he has found. I like the way you wrote on it, I take a grinder and flatten a spot on the white bottom of the antler and write the date with a sharpie.

I just used a dremel tool and went in 1/8" or so so that it could never fade. I figured it will be cool to look back at years down the road.

Talked to a guy at the gate on Friday, he's up there almost daily. He found 1 small 5 pt on Kapowsin side, and he ran into Clyde on Eatonville side, and Clyde found a 6 OT right on the side of the road where they were parked.
-
I went out this weekend and all I found was this guy. :)
I went back up on the hill, and what a difference a few days can make, they started logging.

Eyes in the woods!!

Saw a dandy 5 point Rosie still packing today. Had a few mini heart attacks watching him trot around through the reprod.
-
Walked 11 miles this weekend, found 8 sheds this weekend. The big 2 point had a 4 inch eye guard, the big 3 point I found last weekend and scored it at 61 inches, had 5 1/2 inches of mass around the burr and first point, along with a 3 1/2 inch eye guard. The other 3 point had a 14 inch back tine.

I put in about 12 total hours my last 2 trips out and didn't find a damn thing. Got totally soaked both times, so I'm about do to find a good one!!
-
:yeah: old man yager on the way out last night I did see a dandy bull still holding on to both sides I couldn't believe it! My buddy picked this little guy up while we were out yesterday! 12 hours at it!
-
Still packing both sides? I've seen a few spikes with 1 or both still on, but no big Bulls. I hope maybe some of the big Bulls I saw still haven't dropped yet. I saw 10 6 pt or better Bulls one day down low when there was a foot of snow up there, so I been hitting those areas hard looking for the sheds, but still haven't found anything fresh where I saw all those Bulls.
-
I found this yesterday in kittitas county. It measures 94" with at least 4" missing from rodent chews and weighs 2 1/2 pounds. If only it was brown! Seems like a buck of this caliber would have a story... anybody?

Hey hunterofelk, the giant non-typical our mom found last year is not in the pictures. However, our dad found the big typical this year that looks like it's in the top 10. Our parents are pretty amazing in the mountains. They never stop impressing us
-
I didnt go back and review last years photos, I thought the set with the kickers your mom is holding might be similar. I get a kick out seeing that big set from last year, hard to imagine it laying out there all year. Wonder how many I walk by.

Almost walked by when I spied the polished tips.

Dont know why the image came out 90 degrees.

Mine do this all the time when posting from my phone. Only on this site I might add... I made a comment about it in another thread, but no response. Someone else was complaining about the same thing as well. Maybe one day HW can fix the issue.
I just figure if enough people get sick of looking at sideways pictures they'll change something. :chuckle:

She's just a young pup going along for the hike. I do have a good Chessy that has found me a few blacktail antlers. He's never brought any to me, but if I keep my eyes on him he'll stop and spend a little extra time sniffing around and sometimes it's bone. Good dog...

Found this little dinker today.. also saw a couple bucks and bulls with new growth. It's getting pretty hard... the wildflowers are knee high!
-
Girlfriend picked up her first paddle two weeks ago! Also the biggest one of the trip....... -_- I picked up what I suspect is the same bull a year before. Only about 70 yards up the hill.
-
Nice finds!
-
Saw a funny looking stick just below a side by side muley set.
-
2 spotted from over a mile away turned into 5!
-
Wow! Love the royal sword point.
-
Got out this weekend, I think my miles per shed went up quite a bit. I hiked my butt off, and found the Elk shed about 100 yards from my truck.

Nice! Don't feel bad, I headed to central Colorado for what should've been a slam dunk on sheds... My miles per shed meter pegged. LOL I did prevent a skunk with two small deer sheds in the afternoon.
-
Damn that's a long way to go!! Glad you found something

Matched up the first elk antler we found this year...3 months apart! :)
Front 4 are identical, back ends kind of do their own thing...
-
Nice set. Where do you shed hunt?
-
Nice set. Where do you shed hunt?
LOL. Does a dedicated shed hunter ever answer that question honestly?
-
Nice set. Where do you shed hunt?
Lol thats funny
-
Cmon now, I just meant general area, not asking for any honey holes!!
-
I would guess Stern would say "everywhere" west and east. I would like to know where you hunt Yager!
-
Unit 654, Eatonville area
-
Had a good two days shed hunting with a buddy here in Colorado.
-
Nice set. Where do you shed hunt?
Answer would be all over the state... Mostly E. WA for elk. We have a lot of spots but we find new ones every year! Closing in on 300 miles beatin up the mountains
-
That's one hell of a 2 day haul miles!
-
Hey Sternwarning, stop stating your honey hole on the internet. Now everybody is going to shed hunt eastern Washington... Idiot
-
Miles, you need help paying for gas next year!!!!! Great haul man!!
-
I swear this is going to be my last shed post of the year... My brother and I had a great adventure last Sunday. We each found a beautiful 7 point brownie. His is pretty bad ass, super cool main beam. Peace
-
Leave a few for me, I'm almost healed up and ready to get in the woods again aftert 8 months of recovery, that one your brother found is nice.
-
Great finds
-
Found a few more yesterday.
-
Probably hiked 10-11 miles on Friday, finally found this one on the way back to my truck on the my last hike.

Trying to get pops ready for his Mill Creek Watershed tag later this year! We were sweating bullets 15 minutes into the hike!
-
WOW! Did you put a tape on those? That is some serious bone.
Left side 6 pt scored 165 3/8
Right side 7 pt scored 180 5/8
Puts him at 386 with 40inch score credit.
If left side was matched he'd be a 370 bull, but if the right side was matched he'd be a 400 bull. Love seeing big mature genetics!
-
Great set congratulations, thanks for sharing, my knee is still not good after surgery I'm hoping to get out in September to hunt and help a buddie fill a quality elk tag/ its fustrating for me but seeing that theres still a few sets out in the woods gives me hope.

There's still plenty to find out there! I'd say the majority of the ones I find aren't freshies! And still haven't found anything as impressive as your bull!
Hope the healing speeds up for you!
-
Found it hiking up to the base of Mt. Ranier in a river bottom. Wasn't exactly shed hunting but keeping my eyes open. Cool find in a cool spot
-
Hell of a perk to a great day
-
Nice 4x4 bday set :)
-
Happy B. Day!
-
Biggest blackie I've found, courtesy of the dog
-
Love it! That's a dandy. Good work pup!
-
Sweet, I love nice heavy 4's like that. Good job.
Does your dog find many for you?I'm thinking of getting one for that purpose and curious what percentage the dog picks up
compared to how many you find.

He's found two elk sheds and three, maybe four deer sheds this year. And he's just over a year old, will get better as he gets older. He is primarily a duck dog, but I took two or three weeks when he was a few months old to reinforce positive feedback when he brought back bones or other good smelling stuff. He usually finds at least one bone of some sort per day while working in the woods. I don't think you need one specifically for shed hunting, just find a good nose with high hunting drive and they ought to pick it right up!
-
cool,thanks.
My niece gets all my chewed up sheds for her lab which is mainly a duck dog and that thing is super motivated now to find sheds.which got me thinking, maybe it would up my numbers or mainly help me find the specific ones i'm looking for.
-
Nice Forester! That's one really nice blackail horn!! Dog is doing some real good business

It certainly wouldn't hurt! I used this to get some good pointers to start with, then just kinda kept working on it by myself http://www.gundogsupply.com/gun-dog-shed-antler-training-dvd.html?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cse&utm_term=GUN-DOG-SHED-ANTLER-TRAINING-DVD&gclid=Cj0KCQjwoZTNBRCWARIsAOMZHmGwqZL-NGKYMA-yWUb3of0Fr7V_wVRgYHleynqSjd6EcaUD-zR__64aAmT8EALw_wcB

It's still 2017. Found a fresh one today.

Looking at the flora on the ground I’m pretty sure he is one the wetside, blackies don’t push that easy. :chuckle:

One. He was kidding. Two. That buck was probably laying nearby in some ferns chewing his cud wishing the other one would fall off soon!
-
Forgot to add this earlier. Found during mf this year

I know you're joking, but I just found it by chance when I noticed tracks. Where I found it, I could have spit on asphalt to my left and thrown a rock at a picnic table to my right.
-
Glad you know i was joking. Sometimes you have to make it painfully obvious on here. Nice find fish! Ill be looking in another month and a half or so. Your officially numero uno for Huntwa 2018!

no photos but was hunting the Wind River and found a 133 inch 4 by 3 pair and a 3 point shed from the same buck that was dropped the year before the big pair. I later was hunting the Toutle unit and found a 210 inch pair of 5 point elk sheds. I also found a 4 by 1, that thing must have had hoof rot.
-
Found a few

LoL..... A few. :chuckle:
