Title: Hurting Paws-she did better today
Post by: Eric M on March 12, 2017, 11:55:50 AM
My dog isn't a hunting dog but I posted under hounds because I figured you guys had the most experience with these issues. She's an 8 year old heeler. I spend a lot of time in the woods with her on my off time.  Only been able to get her out here and there this year,. Yesterday was a little longer than usual but the stuff we were in was pretty nasty. She was lethargic in the truck on the way home and once home she didn't want to move. I checked her paws and legs out, and her underside as her skin is thin. I didn't see anything obvious. She just laid in one spot for several hours. She's moving around some today. She was also spending a lot of time licking on her left front paw. Looked again and couldn't see anything obvious. Paws never seemed to give her much trouble unless we overdo it in snow. Maybe she stepped on something or maybe her paws are sore from running around in that thick crap all day. Should I try to get her out at all today or let her rest? She's usually cranky if she doesn't get exercise but seems content to lay around today. How long with sore paws until I take her back to the woods?

Sounds like to me you over did it a bit with an older dog.  See if she perks up in a days or so.  8 years old and a year off and you need to ease her back into running around shape.  She's not as young as she used to be.  Probably still has the heart of a young dog, just not the body to do what she used to.  If she does bounce back, next time not so long on the woods.  I hope she snaps out of it for you.

Thanks.  I think we over did it without getting back in shape. She's moving around a little better tonight. I'm pretty sore today too. Neither of us are spring chickens!

Yea I would agree that it is not paw related. When my dogs start showing signs of hurting feet you don't even have to pick up a foot to see the problem, lots of blood and missing hair and skin.

My guess is Primary Lactic Acidosis

pay special attention to the Prevention section.

I'm not a vet.

Part of the getting in shape process. We condition our hounds every year to get them in "bear shape". We take them out and run them on a back road, the older the dog the more sore they are the first few times, especially if you overdo it. Your dog should get better each day and be ready to go again soon.

Watch for sores worn through the pads, that takes longer to heal and can be a problem if you don't let them heal before burning them off again. If there are sores you can get tufffoot or blukote from hunting dog suppliers. Double U hunting supply (a forum sponsor) probably has something in stock.

Bag balm can also promote healing.

Thanks for the responses. Hard to think of her as an older dog I guess. Been rubbing her paws with bag balm already. Figured it couldn't hurt. She's coming with me again tomorrow for awhile.

She did a lot better today. Seemed a little tired toward the end, but a lot better. Thanks again

It seems kind of obvious now but it's the first time I had ever seen her act like that. Hard to think of her as middle aged since heelers live a good while but I'll definitely be more careful with her in the future. Thanks again.

She'll run faster and farther each time, just like a human training up to do something physical.
