I have an early season hunt planned and am going to purchase a good pair of light weight Pants. I'm looking pretty hard at kuiu, I really like the idea of the hip zips. What's the general consensus?
-
When in California for the early seasons I would just uses quiet lightweight hiking pants that zipped off into shorts. They worked great and you could always write KUIU on them with a sharpie if that matters. Lol
-
I have a pair of north face pants that zip off and I have. A sharpie!!
-
Prana stretch zion. The first light corrugate are nice too .

You mean to tell me that special camo doesn't make me a better hunter? I thought if I had all the newest fad gear, it'd guarantee me a Book buck?

It makes you feel pretty though.
I watched a guy in Swakane a few year ago from across a canyon. He stuck out like a sore thumb in his tan Carhartt jacket. I was thinking this guy is visible to anything and everything. When I pull up my binos I notice he is wearing blue jeans and rubber boots along with his Carhartt. Down he goes along the edge of the canyon and right into the lap of a feeding buck. That deer had no clue he was being stalked by a dude wearing a Carhartt jacket, blue jeans and rubber boots.
I've often wondered how many animals have fallen to a hunter wearing a red flannel shirt.
-
I am going with woolrich big horn wool pants for early archery. I believe they are made out of 6 oz fabric and fit loose. I plan on taking the satin liner out to make them even more light weight.
-

I would bet a lot more than all the camo combined
-
Always love the Kuiu hate
How warm if an early season? I wear the Kuiu Tiberon pants if it's what I'd call "hot".
If there's going to be a temperature variation through the day Alpines are my first choice. Heavy enough for a crisp morning, but light enough and ventable for the warmer afternoons.
AND wearing Kuiu helps you to look pretty in the woods. Believe it or not it attracts the animals, even better than carharts and red flannels :chuckle:
-
I dont think there is really any " kuiu hate " here. Just variances in opinions.
@jdb..... My general consensus is if you think something might work for you give it a try. In general I agree with many here, ANY "hunting" brand pant is likely to cost more for a product of similar design and function than from a non hunting brand. With a seemingly recent trend toward earthtone drabs in many of these products, it can make sense if looking for a cheaper alternative. I personally use kuhl pants for alot of my hiking/shed hunting and love them. But have been impressed with Sitka products for my actual hunting, but both feel completley interchangeable to me. Years ago i would have argued that "hunting" pants especially those designed for bow hunting were quiet. But that gap is much smaller these days IMO.
But by going with a hunting brand, you are going to get camo, which may be important to you, features that may be more taylored to hunting such as knee pads, different vents, etc etc.... and support business who likely support hunting.
-
I have some eddie bauer first ascent pants I love to wear hiking and scouting. Very comfortable but I don't think they would be as durable going thru lots of brush as my first lite pants are so that's what I wear for actual hunting.
-
After 30 years of hunting I think I have worn it all. Like most everything you buy, you pay for name, and quality of a product. The less you pay, then more than likely quality and name brand arent as important.

I'm far from a clothes snob. That said, the Cabelas Microtex are my favs for early hunts. The standard are tough, comfortable, and quiet. They make a lightweight also that I like when it's warm. They dry easily. Not rain gear, but most of the time that's not a problem. I find if I need rain gear in early season I better just carry it. Otherwise I get way too hot 90% of the time. There are other brands that are similar to the Microtex. :twocents:
-
+1 on the kuiu alpine and the hip zips are great they really dump the heat when you need to
-
I've picked up a few items from Pnuma Outdoors (kind of a new kid on the block for upper crust hunting clothing). Gotta say, really liking what I've bought so far and it will get its day in court in September. Take a glance at the Tenacity pants (I grabbed a pair) and see what you think. Can't beat the warranty 8).

I used a pair of these last year and was pleased with them. Got warm a couple times but would have been warm in anything but a speedo and currently, kuiu doesn't make a speedo for lumberjacks.
-
And have also used the zip off hiking pants from Costco and those worked well. Although I don't like the wide leg around my feets , would like more of a taper leg.
-
Eddie bauer first ascent convertibles, or sitka ascent in optifade if I want to go ninja mode. Either way the elk don't care.

They produce camo yoga pants now that are light and easy to move in. Excellent for early season. Check them out.
-
I recently purchased a pair of kuiu attack pants and it was a great purchase. You can you them early season for sure and layer them for late season. I recently was hiking in them in 80 degree weather and had no issues! You won't regret any kuiu purchase!
-
I bought the attack pants also. Light weight, breathable, they stretch, love them so far.
-
Tiberon is really what I'm thinking. But was just looking for other options
-
Not sure about the tiburon line. Might be too thin for bustin brush??
-

I wear the first ascent pants a lot for forestry work on the east side or the west side when I know it won't be thick with blackberries. They hold up well the vine maple, salal, and salmon berry but I get poked easily when blackberry gets thick. These are what I will use to hunt early fall bear on the east side.
-
FirstLite Corrugates.
Costco sold a lightweight synthetic pant for $19.99 that was compared to the Prana and Eddie Bauer pant on Rokslide. I have two pair and they're excellent.
-
Cabela's xpg I've found them on sale around 40. Nylon/spandex pretty tough pant I've used them hunting and working outside! http://www.cabelas.com/product/CABELAS-TREKKER-PANT/1804348.uts
-

The problem with the tiberon is that you are truly limited to early season and if it gets cold you would really have to layer vs the attack where you can use them during different seasons.

The EB pants are super comfortable but not great in the thick stuff when I was shed hunting this year. Got some snags and you feel everything. These are some good tough pants. http://www.duluthtrading.com/store/mens/mens-pants/mens-pants.aspx

It's funny, I went on to the Kuiu road show when they were in Lynwood some weeks ago. I tried on both of their pants. I was interested in the ones that had the knee pads. Unfortunately neither pair passed the knee lift test like the pair I had on did.
The test is really simple. When I try on a pair of pants for active use can I lift them at the knees easily? If the pants bind when I lift my knees like I would climbing a steep slope, they don't fit me. Both of the Kuius did that. I was reminded again today what a great buy the UB pants are from Costco @$20/pair! I've been climbing through thick, overgrown $#%# live and deadfall stuff for the past two years looking for elk and still haven't torn or damaged my pants. Now if I wad busting brush for roosters, I'd have my Filson pants
But these stretch/roll all the way up and over knees for a trip to the river.....
-
I just picked up a pair of sitka's newly designed ascent pants in a solid green color. Wore them for a week in alaska. Definitely my new favorite lightweight hiking pant. Fit great, nice stretch, dry fast, very quiet and available in a solid color. These will be my new go to pant for summer hiking, scouting and early season hunts.
-
Go to the army surplus store and buy the summer BDUs I get them for 5 dollars and they are just as well built as they were when I was in !!! They are extremely tough and dry fast should you get them wet and the comfort factor is unmatched !! And lots of room in the cargo pockets !!
-
I just have different wool pants that I wear. Lighter ones for early and heavier for late. They are great for when its cold in the morning then it heats up around mid day. They regulate heat excellent. Most high end hunting apparel I find is quite noisy. I do like some of the fleece gear out there though. Wool can get a little heavy when wet but its still gonna be more comfortable then the non waterproof expensive synthetics.
-
kuiu alpines for early season hunts.
Do you really like these? I naught these last year and I will never wear them again because of the knee pads. The pants are great but the black knee pads make my knees sweat like crazy.
-
I love BDUs, but one of the best buys I ever made was on a whim at Dick's of all places.
They had an end of the year sale and Field and Stream lightweight cargo pants were on clearance for $15.00 a pair.
I bought two pairs. I have been wearing these pants for ten years for all my hunting and they have held up great.
They are blousey, not tight, if you study extreme temp countries you never see any wearing tight hug the skin clothing whether hot or cold.
The last thing I would want in heat (or extreme cold) is clothes that are tight to the skin.
This completely takes away the wicking ability.

:yeah:
These are great pants even when not hunting!!
-
I have a pair of L.L. Bean Cresta hiking pants and LOVE them. very light weight, breath extremely well, stretch and have articulated knees in them. For $70 and a solid return policy they are prefect for me.
-
Costco has their UB Tech pants back in stock with a new green color. Black, Tan or Green for $19 also 32 degree down best for $15.
And yes I know this thread is 3 years old but well why not?

I wear mine everyday for work and I am yet to wear a pair out because of normal day to day use between my 3 pairs. Feel like wearing sweats but breathe better and look nicer.
Westside BlackBerry stickers are an instant darn it but other than that a great hunting or everyday wear pant.

Thanks! I look every time I've been in but they've only had the Eddie Bauer, these pants can't be beat for the price IMOP.
-
Tried the Eddie's and took them back. They don't fit as good and my wife says they didn't look as good on either. I've been worried that they were switching away from the UB Tech.

Bummed to not see the Slate Grey available online. Maybe the in store will have them. Ordered 2 green and a tan. I’ve got 2 years on my first pairs and they’re going strong.
-
I wear jeans. When it get too hot I make jorts.
-
Duluth flex firehouse cargo pants. They are running 20% off right now too. Several color options. Very tough and dry relatively quick. They have multiple fits also to match your build.

I hoped the same thing but no grey my store.

I've been wearing the 2.0 version of the Sitka ascent pant/shirt this season. Crazy lightweight & dries fast. I wore in 95° to 60 with a layer.
Probably wouldn't wear it past September though.
-
My go to this year has been Sitka accent, Sitka apex, Eddie guide pro work
Really like how quiet the apex pant is yet still fairly decent in hot weather....accent wins in the very hottest conditions
Guide pros are pretty comfy and work for random trips im not woried bout camo...saves wear and tear on the $$$ pants
