Title: LEWIS RIVER ARCHERY ELK
Post by: bowpredator on July 05, 2017, 12:23:16 PM
Hey all,

Looking at hunting the Lewis River unit for Archery elk this year. Never hunted it before,  Went down last week end up by spensor  meadow, Blue Lake off the 93 line  out of  Cougar to have a look around with a buddy that has hunted it. One thing I have noticed by looking at maps and Google earth is that there seem to be more of cuts toward the center of the unit but seem to bee more on the east of the unit toward Mt. Baker. Are there more elk on one side (west) over the other (east)? Have no problem getting away from roads/ crowds and doing a spike camp. Any info ( no personal honey holes)would be GREATLY appreciated.

I think you mean Mt St Helens.  I have not hunted down there in the last 10 years.  We used to hunt what was called the Marble unit.  It is now absorbed into Lewis River.  Anyways it was the NW corner of the unit and it had plenty of elk in it.  We hunted just about as high as you could get.

Obviously your there for a reason. There are elk where you were. Due to size, and amount of public land it is a pressured unit. Expect company and lack of input from anyone who hunts it with success. Lack of logging, fires, and feed, predators and hoof rot have all taken a toll. The upside is alot of "camping" goes on in my experience.  I prefer areas that dont look "elky" thats all i will say on that. East vs west , doesnt matter imo. Elk are very scattered in the unit, and when you find them stay on them. Alot of guys will likely disagree but i have hunted it by covering ground and calling ALOT. Unless you have trail cam pics or a isolated herd, the elk are moving and they are likely not real visible. I do everything i can to get a response.

Hunted it last year for the first time & yes alot of camping goes on & a good number of tree stand guys I found hardly anyone getting off their ass & walking a bit so if you get in a area with ppl don't get too discouraged, great bear country as well
