Title: Dual use AR optic (scope) What is your prefered?
Post by: Alchase on August 05, 2017, 12:22:44 PM
I am always re-thinking optics, I was looking at dual purpose options (CQB range and 200 yd +) what would be your choice for an optic/scope with FOV and relief of a red dot, and the reach-out-and touch-them of a scope.
There are quite a few to choose from MTAC, Vortex Strike Eagle (sorry Hammer, LOL), Steiner Px4, etc....
Which do you own, and which would you prefer?
Your experiences good and bad, this way in six months when I start to second guess optics again, I can just blame all you guys.
Instant justification to buy something new,  :hello:

LOL

What do you consider long range? I had the opportunity to shoot an AR with a Burris 1x4first plain with BAD lever. I saw them used in some of the first 3 gun competitions as they have an 223 drop built in, are illuminated, and on 1x feel like a red dot.  I would guess there are better out there but it seemed like a good banger for buck. I think the drop went out to 450 or 500 yards.

I have a Burris MTAC that does that.

It is pretty good, I was just looking for what you guys use to do the same.

I have an MTAC on a 308 AR and used it on hogs close up and deer at 150 yards under low light conditions on a recent hunt in TX.  It's versatile and a good value, especially when they throw in a fastfire. Burris has run that rebate a couple of times in the last year or two..

I've tried the hybrid way with an Eotech and a 3X magnifier. It did the job of both BUT it added a bunch of weight and the eye relief on the magnifier sucks. Now I just run a strait XPS on mine and call it a day.

However I have been looking at doing something medium to long range and the Leupold Mark AR MOD 1 might fit the bill.

Or I was going to do a Vortex Crossfire with a red dot mounted on a 45. again back to weight being an issue but this rifle would have a specific purpose of med to long range. https://www.midwayusa.com/product/117471/vortex-optics-crossfire-ii-rifle-scope-6-24x-50mm-adjustable-objective-dead-hold-bdc-reticle-matte

Look a the SIG Bravo or Tango...they are both awesome. I don't own one yet but have run systems with them and I love them.

I was in the same boat as you. Over the years I've had and used all the big military optics (Aimpoint, EOTech, ACOG). I recently switched to low power variable scopes. Definitely seems to be the way to go. Got a Burris XTR II 1-5x now. Planning on getting another low power, probably a Vortex Viper PST Gen 2 1-6x or a Trijicon Accupower 1-4x. Also have a Trijicon MRO, but I don't consider that a true multipurpose setup.

I use a number of low power scopes on my coyote guns, on 4x they are more than capable of sub MOA groups at 300 yards.  Under 150 yards I do't even bother turning them up over 1x.  Out to 300 you shouldn't need to even have to bother with hold over dots or turrets as you can hold on fur to that range.  With my favorite the Leupold VX-2

These are truly dual purpose, shooting with the shoptgun to 40 yards and with the rifle to 300 yards.

When I got my MTAC 1-4x28, I almost bought the XTR II 1-5x.
I picked the MTAC because it was marked down 25% LOL!
Now I want a XTR II 1-5x, or the Steiner, LOL

The Sig Bravo's are amazing glass, and the price reflects that.

I was looking more for variable options (SFP) so both eyes open for close in work.

I run the Swarovski Z6i and the Z8i with BRT reticles. No problems with up close on 1x and can easily (sometimes :) ) hit 12" plates out to 500yds. If I am shooting full size targets in hoser mode and want a bigger FOV, the offset irons are the ticket.

Leupold HAMR with the Delta point on top.

Actionshooter, the Z6I and Z8I are awesome optics, and a serious investment!
What are the details (make, model, furniture) of your rifle if you do not mind me asking?

If I was competing I would have justification for that kind of investment in optics. For now the imaginary Zombies and methmagots do not justify that kind of quality, LOL

Leupold HAMR with the Delta point on top.

I have no experience with the Leopold HAMR, is it pretty nice to shoot with?
I have read good things about them.

Took a little getting used to, but love it now.  Once you get the muscle memory to tilt the rifle in instead of try to raise your head to see through the delta point, it is a very quick changing optic.

For similar scopes in a more reasonable price range, check out the Strike Eagle, Leupold makes a couple of 1-6 scopes that are great, Burris has a good option also.

The rifle in that picture is a mix of parts.
Mega Lower
XLR stock
Warne scope mount
Dueck Defense offsets
JP Barrel, comp, handguard, low mass BCG, captured spring buffer, adjustable gas block
AR Gold trigger
Has the recoil impulse of a 10/22 :)

Got the XTR II to my front door for $567, and at the time they were running a $100 rebate, so after that it was $467. Not too bad for an $800 scope.

I have a Leupold Mark AR mod 1 1.5-4x firedot on my AR and it is awesome. The variable low power scope on an AR is perfect. I am able to reliably hit targets out to 550 yards with it, and with the firedot on 1.5x it makes for an awesome quick acquisition red dot. The optic makes the gun a true dual purpose rifle. It works for home defense, target shooting, and makes a killer Coyote gun.

My only gripe is the target turrets. I just see no reason to have target turrets on a low power scope. Especially with the mil-dot reticle, which by the way makes hold overs a piece of cake.
