Not my bull...was in close proximity chasing after him and a few other bulls helping my buddy with his western wa general archery. Unfortunately my buddy didn't seal the deal but a youngster under 18 did with his dad right there wit him. Got to watch this beast take his last few breaths while the father and son cheered and hugged next to him it was a great day
-
Awesome bonding experience.
Good job to the father and son.

My first bull Elk ! Taken with my Bow.. 15 yard shot and dropped in 30 seconds about 20-25 yards away.. Was a 10 day backcountry OTC hunt on public land with my brother and a buddy from out of town.. Got him on the last morning before packing out. Couldn't be more stoked!! Was a tough hunt, but that just made it more rewarding!

Thanks man! I couldn't be more stoked. I've been trying for many years to get an elk with my bow.. So happy to be coming home with my head held high for once! Also nice to not have to plan a late season hunt! Haha

We had a early season we won't ever forget. Got my first bull opening morning, my brother got a huge cow at 79 yards opening afternoon, my dad got his spike on the last day of season. My brother also got his buck opening weekend of deer season. In 15+years hunting this area I have never had an elk in the area during season so it was a very strange but rewarding year.

These are WA elk and I am by no means an avid elk hunter. We put in together on this tag to continue to build points, never thinking we would draw. When the results were posted, I felt a pit in my gut. I wasn't ready to hunt elk seriously. I thought of all the true elk hunters and how hard they work and I wasn't going to dishonor this tag.
I had no idea where to start, but dug in and wore out a pair of hiking shoes. My family and friends made sacrifices and their help was more important than they really understand.
On opening morning my partner took his first bull ever. The next three days it was "bluebird" weather and it seemed like everything went dead. We stopped into another camp a friendly hunter gave us great entertainment and words of encouragement that at least changed the mood a little.
In the last half-hour of the last day I called in and took my first elk. As I walked up to it it didn't shrink, it grew. I don't know what these elk score. I should find out because that's what everyone asks.
I know there are better states to hunt. I know the system is frustrating. I know it's not getting better. (I did get good advice from the game dept.) It's the one we have and it's the one most of us can afford. The fees go to a good cause.
You can't win if you don't enter. You can't kill 'em from the couch. And, please, take a kid along.
-
My partner's first bull.

My first elk.

Back at camp enjoying the moment with my family.

:yeah:
wow

Doubt if you'll do any better in a lifetime of elk hunting. If it isn't TMI, what permit?
-
Juan, awesome bulls that you and your partner took! Congratulations. I appreciate your note about taking a kid along.

Awesome Bull TallCoolJuan.
Wall hanger for sure
-
Great bulls! The one you got is a very cool bull that should score great. But I wouldn't worry about that to much. You probably won't find one like that again.
-
TallcoolJuan: Amazing bull. Life time achievement right there.
-
Beautiful animals, both of them! Congrats to you and your hunting partner. Scores don't have to mean a thing - it's what the elk means to you that matters!
-
Wow awesome bull juan
-
Sure looks like the genetics of those teannaway bulls. Looks like the bull hit on the highway a couple years back and it got a chance to spread his genes. Great bull of a lifetime right there and love the back halves.
Congrats!

Just 15 points, first time putting in for that unit. I just meant in general how long to get a chance to shoot a big bull in this great state.

12th season (11th bull) in New Mexico brought a great 5 day hunt. 15 minutes before sunrise spotted elk in the trees approaching an opening. Set up for a shot and spotted the bull, decent 6x6, 300 Wthrby mag, 180gr Nosler partition, 250yds.

Fun Hunt during the early season. Found this one bedded. He hung around just long enough.

Muzzy OTC, opening day.
-
Usually an archery hunter but with a new baby due (and now born) at the end of the September, I thought it safe to hold off on archery this year. Bought a muzzy west side tag instead. Found time to get out of the house for the opener and went to my favorite spot. Put a stalk on a great 6 point rosie last year in this hole. Got several miles into that deep hole and a bugled produced an answer. Spent the next 30 minutes working this bull up thinking it was potentially the big boy from last year. Was surprised when this little 4 point showed his face at 10 yards in the jack-fir patch we met up in, acting like a big dog the whole time with chuckles, raking, and huffing. With limited time to hunt this season and a great calling session I didn't hesitate to pull the trigger. Now back to work.... Best of luck to everyone else this season! Joel-
-
Congrats. Joel. Good job.

An epic end to the weirdest, longest, and most emotionally up-and-down 9 days of elk hunting I've had in so far in ten years. 6 x 7 Rosie (Cascade Rosie) bull down on September 17th.
The "Cliffnotes" run-down . . . After the treestand rig and trail cam saga, we then discovered someone dumped part of our water cache, and left the water jug (Same people? I'm thinking probably) on opening day. Crickets for the first 3 days. After rigging the receiver chain with a quick link, to patch it back together, I set my treestand all back up later on the third day; praying that none of the other links were weakened, which would snap unexpectedly and send me crashing to the hard ground 23 feet below. I was fuming all over again afterwards. >:( My brother had to leave that evening and so he missed out on all the action. Comfortable, back up in my perch, I got a bull and his cow talking the next day. I chased them around for 4 days, both from the ground and from my treestand. This guy's hormones were RAGING. I've never heard vocalizations like this. He was so throaty, I thought it was fake. Thought it was a hunter who was bugling and blowing a lot of air through his tube. Until he came out of the timber, that is. He walked by my stand at 50 or 60 yards, with a ton of brush and trees between us, so no chance for a shot. So I just sat and watched on high alert. Four days of frustrating, but outstanding elk behavior observation. A lot of back and forth calling action with them, I could write a whole post just on that several days of calling craziness.
Didn't connect. Then on my last day, I finished up my morning hunt, and pulled my stand, Lifeline, and screw-in-steps. I was in shorts, packing up camp, and a cow shot across the opening 60 yards in-front of me. :bash: Another missed opportunity. I'm still in shock, that I'm seeing elk right here. That's not normal. Then a light bulb goes off, and I run and grab my bow hanging on a limb 20 or so yards away. Luckily my release is still on my wrist! I then run to within about 30 yards from where the cow comes out, drop to a knee and wait. Two minutes later, I see antlers start to appear over the brush and I draw back and hold. He steps out, head and front two legs exposed, vitals partially obscured, and he stops, swings his head around and is peering right at me. No rangefinder...I estimate the distance and split my pins, then let it fly...
A huge, special thanks to Swordtine and his brother for taking time out of their hunt to help me cut and pack out this magnificent beast. I met these guys about 6 years ago, and they represent everything a fellow hunter should be. Momma brought you boys up right! With all the low back problems I've had the last few years, it would've taken me an extra full day to bone out and get all the meat out by myself. Last minute of my last day . . . you just never know when it's gonna happen.

Thanks CLARKTAR. There are years where 9 or 10 days can seem like a real grind. I had to re-dedicate this year. Last year I lost my patience after a similar slow opener/getting my stuff stolen/family stuff going on . . . I packed it in after 3 days.

Beast! That story keeps me grinding. Way to hang in there.

Colockum muzzy bull 10/4. Only took 26 points...LOL. Looking at this it might be my last bull. I'm 60 now and can't get it done like I used to but thanks to some amazing friends I was able to fill the tag. My husband, who has been my hunting partner for 25 years had a medical issue come up so he couldn't hunt. I was so down, we had really looked forward to a tag like this for us for so long. Our friend, his son, and his son's friend stepped in and their generosity in opening their cabin to us and their help all the way thru meant that I could go on this hunt. Usually I am a rifle hunter, but being able to hunt this time of the year was an amazing experience. So many elk, so many bulls, the sounds, the smells..it was awesome. I had an opportunity every day. This bull presented the best opportunity for a clean kill on the last day that I would be able to hunt. He certainly wasn't the biggest bull we saw but I'm really happy to fill an empty freezer with this one. So thanks Jim and Mark, and Duckhunter14 for making this possible and so much damn fun!

Shot my first bull opening day. Found couple legals the day before the opener, went to the same general area in the morning found their track and three hours later shot my first bull.
The bulls in the coastal west side unit I was hunting were bugling for the last couple weeks, including this guy I shot.

Well, the snow was the key. I managed to log about 5 hunting days altogether between the weekends and some vacation days, and saw naught but a few cows and a single branched bull (and loads of my fellow walking highlighters) during the season.
I was hopeful with the weather system moving in the people would start moving away and the elk would start moving down, and that's exactly how it turned out! Got out at dawn this morning and tracked some elk through the snow to the best of my meager abilities, and then suddenly, a cow bolts out from the brush about 40 yards away. I threw my rifle to my shoulder not knowing if she was alone, and low and behold, a yearling spike pops out just as the cow runs off and BOOM.
Naturally, I then track the blood trail to some bushes and follow the tracks out of the bushes, no more blood, and like an idiot, I follow the tracks for more than a mile through a hell hole of a snowy boulder field.
Took me an hour to loop back around and the spike was just on the other side of the bushes, no more than 50 yds from where I shot him -- I had followed the lead cow's tracks. My 7mm-08 hornady eld-x had hit the mark, passing through both lungs and the aorta. Not bad for a snap shot :IBCOOL:.
HUGE thanks to my best friend Daniel and credit to the greatest neighbor a guy could ask for sharing spots and tips, not to mention help packing out. And thanks to everyone on this forum for all the knowledge I've been gleaning.
This makes 2 spikes in 2 years of elk hunting. I am the luckiest :censored: on the planet.
-

He didn’t go too far, he hit him a couple more times after the first shot to ensure of that. He shot his buck at 200 yards with it and I shot mine at like 20 and it performed flawlessly. He has the kimber hunter which seems to be an awesome light weight rifle. The barrel does heat up quick though.

Congrats on your elk. If you have a seat belt or some webbing sewn together in a circle with a metal ring in the middle putting each arm thru it and tying the rope to it out the back makes for an easier drag.

These are our Oregon archery bulls from this year...Still getting to do it with Dad and my brother. I was the Gatherer this year. Dad and my brother were both successful. My brother hadn't killed a bull in 8 years, so I told him I would be caller for him on this day. We had a real good bull going, but he decided to take his cows and head over the ridge, and we were trying to move up on him, I caught this bull heading off another ridge heading the same direction as we were. Moving quickly, we got there before he did and he offered a 32 yard shot for my brother as I was telling him " kill him". Well he made a great shot and the dry spell was over. Was a great year and very happy and lucky to still be able to hunt with my dad and family. I was even able to get the wife up to camp and help with my dad's bull.
-
My best so far, 2nd branched bull, following a barely legal 3pt last year. On the Tuesday of early muzzy in the Yale unit western wa. 135 yards off hand heart shot. 5x5. Took about 5 steps and went down. Made some new friends this season while out there. Would of been packing all day if it wasnt for one of them that helped me out.

Scotta, that's a very nice bull! Would love to hear the story behind it.
After hunting hard and feeling the pressure of all the regular season hunters moving in my hunting partner and I were fortunate to find this bull crossing the road at daylight then cross back 30 after daylight at the same spot on Thursday . Friday morning we decided to drop me off and walk up the road at the spot and wait , partner drove past me and 3 min later the bull sneaks down the hill and I dropped him 50 yards from the road . Approx 10 min after daylight shortest day hunting ever . First bull !
