Title: Cabelas and Savage Sale
Post by: 762Armo on September 10, 2017, 01:10:14 PM
Trying to pass on a great deal here to hunt wa.

Cabelas has a sale on the Savage 12FV and Savage has a $100 rebate on them.
After all said and done, you have a nice rifle for $250 tax included.
Bull Barrel, accu trigger. Stock is a bit flimsy and it has an internal mag, other than that rifle shoots lights out. I bought the 223 version couple years ago, my brother shot a .4 MOA group at 100 with it.
Most of them are sold out at the store, but can be ordered.

I've bought 3 of these 12FV's from Cabelas in the past year all on sale for less than $400 bucks.  This sale is ridiculous.  I'll post targets from just how good these guns shoot.

Here are a couple targets from the range Friday night from savage 12fv rifles.  One in 223 REM the other in 6.5CM. Note the 1 hole group at 200 yards. And the CM is very consistent. Steady half Moa shooter with low ES.

not bad for $350 rifles huh?

Bang for buck is definitely there.
Now should I go 6.5 or 308?

for that price I'd go both.  I also picked up a .308 but haven't had a chance to shoot it yet.  My buddy bought one and first three shots with 178 ELD-X went into a bug hole at 200 yards.

These are my favorite donor rifles! Get them on sale and the sell the barrel and stock to get an action essentially for free!

Called Cabela's yesterday, fellow said the 6.5 Creedmore's were about a month out on backorder.

Looking at the sale ad, I noticed that is the only one that doesn't say it has a varmint weight barrel or the Accutrigger.

For those who have one, is this correct or just a typo?

Thinking about heading there are ordering one this afternoon...okay...maybe two!!!

:chuckle:

Which other caliber would you get in addition to the 6.5 if you were inclined to pick-up two?
Title: Re: Cabelas and Savage Sale
Post by: 762Armo on September 11, 2017, 09:24:26 AM
I would assume that's a typo, 12FV should all be the same, but never hurts to verify.
In addition to 6.5, I'd do a 223 and 308.
I have the 223, and want 6.5 and 308. LOL.
Title: Re: Cabelas and Savage Sale
Post by: CaNINE on September 11, 2017, 01:44:43 PM
The 6.5CM has a 26" varmint profile with a 8 twist.

I also suggest the .308 and the .223.

The 22-250 only has a 1:12 twist which to me doesn't make much sense.  If it had a 7 twist I'd be all over it.

Thanks for the info.

Ordered a 6.5 Creedmore, gun counter fellow said he was certain it was a typo, as the web page builder they use "Isn't very good!"

Worse case he said was, when it shows up, if it doesn't have the Accutrigger or varmint barrel, I don't have to accept it and there would be no restocking fee.  We shall see I guess.

Now the waiting begins.  Yesterday, was told to expect just short of a month for delivery, today, different fellow says next week...  :chuckle:

Yesterday, when I spoke with them, the fellow said that they had almost 150 6.5 CM and about 80 .308's on backorder st thst time.  His best guess was 3-4 weeks.

The fellow today said it would be there next week...so I guess time will tell which one knew what he was talking about.

It doesn't matter if it's a couple weeks to me.  Do these qualify for the  $100 visa card?  Looks like it says the 12 fcv qualifies not the 12 fv.

Again, based on my phone calls both today and yesterday, they both said it did.  The fellow today said that in addition to that, those that qualify for their veteran's discount program practically made it as if they were paying us to take one of the rifles.

took the 12FV 6.5CM to the range against last night.  It's riding in a McMillan HTG stock now outfitted with savage bottom metal and DBM.  The 42.0 grains of H4350 load is the winner.  It put 5 shots in less than an inch at 200 yards.  Avg MV of 2760 with that load.  I'll be taking this gun to Montana for deer and antelope next month.

How are you guys breaking these in?
Title: Re: Cabelas and Savage Sale
Post by: CaNINE on September 16, 2017, 04:47:33 PM
I don't know that it matters on the break in really. But because I'm a creature of habit I follow the same procedure on all my barrels factory or custom. Shoot one, clean one for first 5 shots; shoot 5 and clean for next 20 shots.

My buddy who has the same rifle didn't follow any procedure. They both still shoot.

It's still available online:

http://www.cabelas.com/product/SAVAGE-FV-VARMINT-RIFLE/1994604.uts

Better hurry and order one. They all say "limited stock."

I'd get one but already have enough rifles. All I need is a new rifle for my kids but this one is too heavy.

Ordered one up in 6.5 Creedmoor. It's destined to become a chassis rifle in time. For 250 bucks why would you not get one? How do you go about finding out when it will come to the store?

You will get an email when the rifle arrives at the store but wait until they call you before you drive down to pick it up. There is a lag between the email and when they receive it into store inventory. If you assume it's ready for pick up just because you received an email you may make a trip for nothing. Don't ask me how I know. Wait for the phone call.

Oh and by the way, I took the 6.5CM out to 600 yards last night. It held a half minute 3 shot group and kept the single digit ES. So I'm convinced that the Savage 12FV is the best deal going in the firearms industry.

:chuckle: I'm 3 hours away from the store so you can be sure there will be a phone call made to ensure its there. I have a savage fluted lr 6.5 x 284 that shoots lights out so this was an easy sell on me. That's cool to hear yours is a shooter, how did it shoot bone stock before the McMillian upgrade? Do these have the target version of the accutrigger that adjusts down below 2lbs or the 2.5lb+ version? What bullet are you loading for it?

Anybody have any experience with the different chassis out there that wont break the bank? Like the looks of the MPA BA lite or MDT ESS but have never seen or held them.
Title: Re: Cabelas and Savage Sale
Post by: CaNINE on September 21, 2017, 09:33:47 AM
The rifle shot very well bone stock. During barrel break-in it was in the original plastic stock. It's pillar bedded from the factory so it's a good platform. I used a mild load of 38.0 grains of 4350 during break-in. It put every round during the 25 round process into 1.5 inches at 200 yards.

As for the trigger it is not the varmint version which has a 1.5 pound lower end.

I'm shooting berger 140 VLD for now. Will play with the 130 AR hybrids and maybe 143 ELD-X this winter. I like a bullet that dumps it's energy payload into the target so for now sticking with the berger.

Just got the email saying the .223 I ordered on 9/20 is in and ready for pick-up, was initally scheduled to be there 10/2...so, not too bad!

On the other hand, the 6.5 CM I ordered on 9/11 is still "in process" status.

Was told they are expecting a large shipment in close to the end of October, maybe mine will be one of those.

Sale ended on 9/20 for the 12FV.

Rebate is still good on ones purchased up to the end of the year, so even at $319.00 after the $100.00 rebate, that isn't too bad a price.

The order status on the 6.5 CM I ordered on 9/11 changed from "In process" to "shipped" today, and Cabela's also dinged my VISA, so it looks like they are clearing up the backorders.

Actually, 12/31 is the cut-off for elligible purchases, we have until 1/31/2018 to submit rebate paperwork, so as long as we get receipts dated no later than 12/31 we are good to go.

Checked my card. Have a pending charge from Cabelas. I guess it’s in the works now.
And yes. Hard to beat the value for this rifle. Wished it had a mag. But then it’s be more expensive.

Charge cleared my card this morning.

When I ordered my .223, the day the charge cleared was the same day I got the email saying come get it.  Hasn't happened yet with the Creedmoor though...

The two $100.00 rebate cards will help in getting a new stock and new bottom metal for one of them at least, of course then, there are mounts, optics, ammo, dies, bullets, powder......

Got the email this afternoon and just picked-up the 6.5 CM.

From order date to pick-up = 48 days.

Not bad I guess considering how many were bought during the sale and backordered, and for less than $250.00 after rebate, not complaining.

Will have to complain just a touch about their policy of having each line of each piece of paper and computer entery checked and rechecked, and verified.  Got to be a better way, especially when, like today, they were slammed at the gun counter but only two cashiers on duty...had a brief flashback to being in WalMart, a dozen or more checkouts and only 1 or 2 cashiers!!!

I have some RL17 laying around that I've used in my short mags. I may have to give it a try in the CM. I can push H4350 2850fps and hold good accuracy but the ES started to open up. I'm using lapua brass with small rifle primers. I'm pretty happy with the velocity I'm running especially with the 140VLD. I used this set up to take a Montana Whitetail last week and rifle and bullet performed great. Neck shot as he was bounding from his bed, complete pass through golf ball sized exit. Minimal meat damage. Sweet set up.
