I am curious as to how many hunters pack a handgun while hunting and what is the reason? Are you hunting game with it or are you carrying it for self-defense? What do you pack?
-
I carry a handgun hunting, for self defense. As in 4 legged animal self defense more than anything. Of course as a last resort after trying to not be in a situation like that in the first place and also next choice is my rifle. Last resort is my glock 20sf in my drop leg holster.
:)
-
I always pack while in the woods. Always. Why? why not :dunno:
-
Every time, G20 in an HPG kit bag.
-
Always, don’t leave home without one (except I can’t have one at work).
-
:hello: I do
-
You bet I pack when hunting. I have a Ruger GP100 6.5" .357 mag. Self defense against bear and cougars when hunting archery for deer or elk. I always get all 4 tags too.

Kimber 45 in a Miami Classic holster, so when I have to, you know, in the woods no buckles or belt holsters to contend with :)
-
I pack a Glock or a XD most of the time. (a) because I can, (b) personal protection. I have several occasions when I wished I had one but didn't, and (c) I had a game warden tell me he would never go it to the woods with out one and that was good enough for me
-
I carry my glock 30 with me every day period. Weather I’m hunting or not
-
All the time! Beretta 92FS with 147 grain bullets. It also helps to pop some grouse on my way back.
-
Sometimes. Lately my main carry is my rifle it's with me every day so long as there is something legal to tag out on.
When I carry a pistol it's just a 22 but I sure as heck wouldn't survive getting hit with 30 rounds out of a 22. Maybe you all are tougher but that is a lot of holes to plug.
I carry cuz I can, not for self defense really but more because it's a right I choose to exercise.
-
I don't.
-
Will be carrying my new Sig .45 acp. Why not is what I say, never know what can happen in the woods.

Any reason why?
Just curious :)

I only carry handgun in the woods when I'm not packing a rifle. Don't need the extra weight if I have rifle.

EDC.

:yeah:

:yeah: Why is this on the Elk board though?
-
I used to never carry in woods while hunting. Tell my buddy told me of a story that happened to him and his wife. After that I pack when wife and kids are with me or I’m out solo. Mainly for the crazy a$$ two legged animals.
-
I carry a 44 when in the woods and not hunting and sometimes when I am.
I've needed one before and could again. :dunno:
-
I carry when I mow the lawn... ;)
Anytime I leave the house, regardless of my destination is a no brainer.
As for the why, I don't trust humans.
-
Always carrying if I'm in the woods or not. While hunting I have a holster for my .40 S&W with spare mag attached to my exo belt.

Ruger Blackhawk 45 lc with buffalo bore just in case. Even with the rifle in hand.

I do. Mostly just because it's nearly a part of me after all these years. I've popped of a round or two at grouse...
-
I carry. I never go into the woods without one, hunting or not. I carried during archery(inside my waist pack) before it was "legal". Two legged critters are my main concern - bear, cougar, and wolves are secondary. Even if rifle hunting, I will have a semi auto on my side. Glock 17L with two extra mags and Underwood Extreme Penetrator +P+
-
I've always carried my XD .45 until halfway through this season. Too much added weight and bulk. I'm already armed with a bow and a knife. I might use my LC9 in the future. I'm more concerned about the two-legged predators than the 4-legged ones.
-
I don't.

Just curious :)
it's extra weight that I don't feel a need for.
:yeah: Even when I was in heavy bear country back home in Alaska. I didn't see a point when my rifle has much more smack down power
-
Nope. No need. Might feel differently in griz country. As for fellow humans, I've found nearly all of the ones I meet in the woods to be guys and gals I'd enjoy a cup of coffee with..
-
I archery hunt so carrying a sidearm isn't an option. Guess that makes me more manly and less afraid of 4 legged creatures . :P haha
-
I usually do, Glock 17, to fend against predators.
-

A modern handgun can be carried while archery or muzzleloader hunting, but only for personal protection.
-
I thought you could carry a sidearm for any outdoor activity for protection. but I could be wrong..
-
I thought you could carry a sidearm for any outdoor activity for protection. but I could be wrong..
(a) It is unlawful for any person to carry or have in his possession any firearm while archery hunting in the field during an archery season specified for that area, except for modern handguns carried for personal protection. Modern handguns cannot be used to hunt big game or dispatch wounded big game during an archery big game hunting season
-
Who doesn't? My main concern is 2 legged than 4 legged creatures.
-
Just around camp. too heavy to pack hunting.
-
I love this thread! Sometime I carry a .22 for small game, sometimes the nine and sometimes a .45. I don't want any of my pistols to feel unloved😘🔫.
I carry a pistol so I can fight my way back to my rifle that I shouldn't have set down in the first place LOL!
-
Yes I carry a handgun when in the woods hunting.. protection, signaling, small game...
-
Glock 43 9mm with extra magazine, every time I hunt or work out in the woods. Not really for the toothy critters, but for the nut-case two-leggeds...
-
Yes, everywhere.
-
I carry my .380
Reasons in this order:
1) signal for help if needed
2) if lost, use to help survive (feel better sleeping out there)
3) protection from 2 and 4 legged critters.
-

Always.
For all the reasons mentioned and one other.
Back in my 20s I took a nasty fall off a rock ledge while deer hunting.
When you fall like that, your rifle is gone. A side arm has a good chance to stay with you and can be used for all the reason mentioned.
My carry the past two years is two Bond Hand Cannons in a twin shoulder rig. Very comfortable.
Or a LCP in my pocket.
-
I have enough trouble getting myself up the hills. I only carry what's absolutely essential. If I'm just out scouting and not carrying a rifle, I'll sometimes carry my .22 pistol. Or maybe the Glock if people might be a concern.
-
Yep. S&W Mountain Gun in .45 Coit. Pretty potent medicine for a relatively light weight revolver.
-
That's my dream gun
-
I thought you could carry a sidearm for any outdoor activity for protection. but I could be wrong..

So this is a bit tricky since bear and cougar season overlap with archery.
Does this mean that I cannot hunt bear with rifle in archery elk or deer. I saw a couple of nice bear during elk season. Would I need to leave my bow at camp and head out for bear with rifle or pistol during archery deer or elk?
And to answer the original thread., I carry my 9mm S&W.
-
Pretty sure 9mm isn't legal for hunting big game. Pretty sure a recent change allowed side arm for archery under specific circumstances. Also if you are legit concealed who the heck is gonna know :o
-
Always. Im not particularly worried about 4 legged critters though, I have however seen some bizarre 2 legged ones.
-

A handgun must be .24 caliber or larger and have a barrel of at least 4 inches to be legal for big game.

Yes,I recall that which was why I used to carry a 357 revolver that was 4 3/4 8) I guess you are correct 9 is legal being essentially a 38, but not sure,I would HUNT with that maybe opportunistic killing kinda like how bears hunt :)
-
Yupper,... Dan Wesson .44 with a 4"bbl and 2 speed loaders..... yes,... it's heavy....I make do...
-
Yep ruger p345, 45cal. We have those hybrid coyotes as the WDFW likes to refer to them as roaming where I hunt.
-
Always. Never ever go without. I've had to kill one bear with my pistol.
-
Yes I carry one...BFR 45/70 Why? Because that's what I hunt with.
-
Yes. Always. Hunting or not.
-
XD40 for this reason.
-
The one time I went bow hunting and left my pistol under the seat I had something... I think a cougar follow me back to the truck after dark... I will never go out into the woods again without a pistol. Between the cats, wolves or crack heads your ignorant if you go in healed.

Usually only when going back in on a kill site it big brownie country.
-
Interesting comments. I pack but I would only use it as a last resort against people. Any thing else is all ways up for a look up in the regs. I fish a lot and when people are fishing for salmon or steelhead some become like elk hunters. They loose they minds. I have seen more fights on the river than any place else. I just grab my stuff and back out. No fish, elk or deer is worth me taking a human life. But if I feel myself or my family is in danger beyond retreating than that decision will have to me made. It takes someone really special to go after someone who is already retreating.
-
I only carry handgun in the woods when I'm not packing a rifle. Don't need the extra weight if I have rifle.
x2
My Beretta Nano goes with me everywhere, unless I'm carrying a bigger gun ;).
-
Every. Single. Day.
-
Never have... but after reading this thread and learning there are clowns in the woods ... will start!
-

I would for sure carry a sidearm in that situation; in addition to bear spray.
Let's just say I'm not complaining about the absence of grizzlies in the central cascades :).
-

I almost always have a firearm in the woods, I don't always carry a handgun if I have a long gun. I'm more concerned with being armed when I come back to the trail head than when I'm in the woods - but - I have been within a hair of shooting a belligerent moose with a handgun. In the rare instance I have a problem with a wild carnivore, I'm armed; and it's a good tool if I get lost or injured for signaling too.

As I interpret this language, it would not be legal to shoot a bear or cougar with your handgun while archery hunting, unless in self defense. If that situation arose, you would have to call it in to F&W LE as a defensive shooting, it would be the responding LEO's discretion whether you are permitted to tag and take possession of it.
-
Has anyone every used their handgun while out in the brush?, I almost did on a beaver while fly fishing last year. Weird how aggressive they can get. I'm assuming I was standing on top of his dam/home and didn't realize it.
-
FNS-9C on my side at all times.... or my 38. snubby. When its not on my side its in my brief case at work. 17 hollow point rounds should slow down a cougar/bear and sure as hell denture any thief... ive been robbed at gun point... never again. as for small game?
-

I've shot grouse, bunnies and one coyote with my handgun while in the field.

I know this one.
Bear and cougar are legal with ANY LEGAL WEAPON. You do not buy a weapon specific tag so any legal weapon is totally legal.
I started hunting bear and this really confused me. People on huntwa assured me I could rifle/handgun hunt bear during deer elk archery. Conversations with wdfw officials confirmed this for me.
I am way less worried about legal weapons than I am property boundaries and feel free vs written permission vs all the other crazy stuff.

It is absolutely legal to hunt bear or cougar with a firearm or any other legal weapon during the entire open season. However, if you are archery hunting in the field for deer or elk during archery season for those species, you can't legally harvest big game, including bear or cougar, with your handgun. If you are archery hunting in the field for deer or elk during archery season for those species, you cannot carry a rifle.

I have hunted with guys that would not enter the woods without a hand gun. I mostly do 5-7 day elk hunts where i am pretty far back. I agree that people are the most dangerous thing you can run into in the woods. But to me there is no difference to walking around in the woods to walking around town. You have a better chance choking on your food at camp, having a heart attack, or getting in a car reck on your way home. I do think i would carry mase or a handgun if i was in Grizzly country. There have been times where i wished i had a gun on me. But even if i did, i wouldn't of had to use it. I can see both sides. I think it's mostly makes people feel safe for the just incase.

I believe that some feel more emboldened to try to get away with things when they are away from "civilization".
Ever been out on a hike and stumble into a grow? How about a car with a couple of junkies that drove off the road standing in the middle of the road as you're trying to drive back to camp at night with no cell service? Been there. Yes I like to "feel safe" just incase.
Wasn't there someone on here that had a run in with the AB up in the hills a year or so ago? Couldn't find the post but I thought I read that once.

Claude Dallas agrees with me.
Claude Dallas is a despicable murderer POS. Not cool.

I always carry my XD40 while hunting (and everywhere else for that matter...my town is full of junkies) as 90% of my hunting is done solo.

He packed a handgun while hunting. I'm not vouching for his character.
-
I do during archery. But during rifle I just carry the rifle. I carry because there are big cats in the woods that can eat me. And I'm more of a dog lover.
-
I pack a Glock 21 Gen2 .45 for personal protection from wolves, bears, cougars, as well as from weirdos in the woods. I also shoot grouse with my 45 if the opportunity presents itself. I carry a 13 round magazine and a extra 10 round magazine.
-
I always have either the Taurus Judge in 45/410 or the Magnum Research BFR in 45/410 with me. You never know. I had a bear within 10 ft while I was installing my game cameras during the summer. Fortunately he decided to run back......

I don't care and carry wherever I want. It's my right, period.
-
My rifle is for animals, my pistol is for humans. Glock 19 most days. I do not go looking for trouble, but getting back to the truck after dark I like to be prepared. 300 win mag is an awesome cartridge, but if you encounter 3 day guys back at the truck a bolt action rifle leaves you wishing you had something a little quicker.
-
I never seen the need to pack a pistol. I’m certainly not afraid of four or two legged critters.
As far as seeing a bear or cougar during archery elk or deer season, i can’t understand why someone would want to get a rifle to shoot either. I shoot archery Cause i can’t get the same rush from triggering a animal with a gun. As far as i’m concerned there is nothing quite like trying to put a stalk on a bear or cougar with a sharp pointy stick.
The only reason you shoot small game with a pistol when you archery hunt is because you can’t shoot worth a turd. :twocents:
-
As far as carrying anywhere, it's about making sure I'm home for my family. It's not for show, intimidating or any other reason. It's for anything that brings the question, my life or theirs. 2 legged, 4 legged, no legged.

My reason, which I believe many others stated as well, is just the extra weight was something I don't want to carry. When I've already got a rifle I don't feel the need for a second gun. I have enough other things to carry as it is- binoculars, rangefinder, cell phone, GPS, etc. Plenty of stuff and I just don't need one more thing that I most likely will never have a use for.
-
Gun strapped to bag on hike in..in the dark.....or day light.....Bear? Cougar? Dare I say WOLF staring you down. Throw your pack off and try and get it unstrapped and shouldered? Aim down your scope powered by xxxx? At close distance? My family depends on me and I'd rather have in case rather then not and need it. Bow usually strapped in on long hikes as well.

I do not enter the woods without my sidearm.
I've heard plenty of times about bears that have been wounded and lost.
I'd rather wear it and occasionally curse the extra weight than not wear it and curse my own negligence as an angry wounded bear rushes out of the brush.

hey if you're that old and decrepid enough to where carrying an extra 2 lbs is gonna stop you from either hunting or packing out an animal that you have shot than i'm glad i know it now rather than when we are in camp together...i've got an idea...how about leaving your cell phone in camp and packing a sidearm so i'm almost guaranteed about getting back safely rather than you being able to post your hunt/pics via face time or what ever the hell they use these days...its almost like the person who posts it quickest on social media wins...if you are that worried about packing a sidearm that weighs a couple pounds is gonna slow you down then thankfully you have never felt the need to use it-until you do

Or Bobcat could just use his rifle instead of a handgun.
Seriously though, no need to bash someone for what they decide to bring on a hunting trip. Who cares if a guy just brings his long gun, or looks like GI Joe?

i'm not trying to bash anyone...i'm here to say anyone can do anything they want but i can't think that anyone would say that packing a 2-3 lb pistol would limit them from being able to hunt the way they want..

I feel pretty safe in the woods with my rifle. Maybe I don't even own a handgun? Seriously it really has never even crossed my mind to carry a handgun when I'm deer or elk hunting. I bring the tools that are needed for the job, and that's it, nothing more. Yes I have a cell phone, which I feel is more beneficial for my safety than a second gun would be. With my phone, I can call 911 if necessary. Or I can text my hunting partner when I hear a shot and find out if he's got an elk down.
But you're right about one thing, I AM old. But not quite decrepit- yet. 8)

My handgun is part of my body when hunting, heck, I’m carrying it more now when I’m not hunting than ever.
-
I carry my 41 whenever I hunt or shed hunt or camp

In over 40 years of hunting Don't need it I got a bow in my hand :IBCOOL:

Sure sounds like you're in an "Us vs. Them" mode on this topic. I don't think anyone said "I can't hunt with a sidearm strapped by my waist". People just prefer to go without. No need to pick sides. The OP just asked a simple question about what people do, now whether there should be wolves in WA.

I go nowhere without a pistol. No I'm not paranoid but, I would much rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it.

curious---who doesn't ?
Several people posted they don't.
i'm sure they have but what is there reason for not doing it ? until i hear a credible reason for not carrying a handgun while hunting all i see are individuals that are limited to defend themselves from either 4 legged or 2 legged preadators
My reason, which I believe many others stated as well, is just the extra weight was something I don't want to carry. When I've already got a rifle I don't feel the need for a second gun. I have enough other things to carry as it is- binoculars, rangefinder, cell phone, GPS, etc. Plenty of stuff and I just don't need one more thing that I most likely will never have a use for.
hey if you're that old and decrepid enough to where carrying an extra 2 lbs is gonna stop you from either hunting or packing out an animal that you have shot than i'm glad i know it now rather than when we are in camp together...i've got an idea...how about leaving your cell phone in camp and packing a sidearm so i'm almost guaranteed about getting back safely rather than you being able to post your hunt/pics via face time or what ever the hell they use these days...its almost like the person who posts it quickest on social media wins...if you are that worried about packing a sidearm that weighs a couple pounds is gonna slow you down then thankfully you have never felt the need to use it-until you do
I have much higher odds of needing crutches or a splint to get back to the vehicle because I twisted my ankle in the rocks than I do needing a pistol most of the time. And when I'm rifle hunting, 99.9% of the time I'm carrying a single shot rifle. Oh the horror.

I will always carry while bow hunting. After shooting a big bear this year during the shot my rest did not drop. As I shot it broke the prongs. ( never had this happen, even shot a dozen times the night before) thankfully the bear was close enough to still have a lethal shot. But let me tell you this blood trailing a big bear with no way to make a follow up shot in thick brush was not fun. I guess my point is I will carry because of the crazy unthinkable events that can happen. You don’t know when a curve ball will come your way.

Used to carry .357 MAG dual purpose (Self Defense and Defense Against Critters). Then I met and old guy at Cabelas while I was looking into a .22 Buckmark and during the conversation this very wise gentleman told me he always carries his .22 Ruger for those times when he comes across a grouse...there's dinner at camp. Well, needless to say I thought about it and now I carry my .22 Buckmark and, as a matter of fact, got a grouse this season :IBCOOL:. And it was delicious.
So, after thinking about it, why would I need a sidearm :dunno:. My rifle should be able to provide adequate Self Defense / Deterrent and Defense Against critters. And, my current sidearm "BUCKMARK" provide an alternative outdoor treat.
And yes, I have always had a combo license 8).
Side note...stop striping the breast meat out and tossing the rest. Leg, thigh, scapula, heart, liver, gizzard, and yes the neck are all good eats (think Cornish Hen) :twocents:.

I wonder what some guys did before it was legal to pack a handgun while bowhunting or ML hunting? It hasn't been that long that it's been legal to pack a handgun while archery or muzzleloader hunting.

Only a handful survived to tell their stories.

I bowhunt, and yes I do carry a handgun. A Ruger 357. I MIGHT have carried before they passed a law that said we could. Also carry when I hunt ducks & upland.

For muzzy you could carry a muzzy pistol as long as it met the regs.

Yeah. I never did back then and I still don't. Just never felt like I needed a sidearm. :dunno:
I did pack my .357 S&W when I hunted the Bob Marshall almost 30 yrs ago. I did decide it was extra weight that just wasn't necessary though. I can't remember packing it around on other occasions. It might have a little bit to do with the law not allowing it in this state, so I just got used to not being able to take it?

Always felt comfortable with a 5 round internal mag. This BAR with a 3 rd box mag and not being super easy to load singles is giving me second thoughts on backup tho
