Title: Cb radio base stations.
Post by: Thehowler on November 05, 2017, 01:26:37 AM
I installed a cb radio in my jeep last summer, I was amazed at how far and clear I could pick up conversations from other cb'ers. Since where I hunt, I often do not get phone reception, I was thinking about setting up a base station in my shop to be able to get ahold of my wife and family if needed.
Does anyone own a cb base station? How do like it?
Lots of good info on YouTube.

I had a COBRA 2000 GTL base station for years (house fire) & really liked it. Couple it with an Astatic D-104 mic, a good antenna & rotator you should be good to go.
My stuff was tuned up a bit and had a moonraker antenna on a tower that helped a lot. Was handy communications for hound hunting back in the day.

Same goes with the mobile units. Good antennas & mic's help the clarity a lot.

I tried numerous fancy mobile units but the old (also tuned up) Cobra 148 GTL mobile fit the bill for me.
I am not up to date on the latest gizmos but last I looked the CB craze died and with it, the market and latest technology followed.

I expect to replace it all plus up the ante with ham gear at some point.
Ham is really the way to go.
Cell has sold us on convenience but as you know it is a pricey commodity.

I would be hard pressed to identify anything ever made as aggravating as a cell phone.
The automated answering system runs a close second..

Tech is still progressing the popularity is not on the everyday motorist so we're not likely to see the changes, but still standard equipment in big rigs. They can run completely hands free with voice initiated bluetooth headsets to apps that can sync them to smart phones. Depends on what you want to spend they aren't the easiest thing to find either as its become a niche market, but its all there.
