This one didnt make final selection. He wasnt big enough ......Kidding! I got a ton of images of this guy and this was one of them. I liked the scene with him, but felt the rock was too distracting from the buck. I dont know.....choices.
@PlateauNDN you asked for him

I didn`t notice any rocks until I read your post...

I agree, the blurry rock doesn't look good. It takes up about 40% of the picture.
Besides the deer I love the colors of the rock he's standing behind as well as the color of the sky. What time of day?
And I'm always a sucker for any shot with sagebrush in it

About 1300 hrs. He was bedded when I was stalking him (thinking he was another big buck), They were getting up and stretching about 1ish. I was at about 30 yards when he finally stood up and stretched and the doe got up to feed. He was bedded by this rock with a single doe at the time. There were two other bucks and a few doe in the area. The younger bucks started fighting, which is what got his attention here. There were intermittent showers and clouds, so it helped with the sun. I "shot" him up for some time, before abandoning him to look for the other buck. (rookie mistake) I took my Sitka vest off which had my spare battery and photocard in the pocket, and put on my rain jacket because of the weather. The vest was sitting back at my truck. I had to ration .....

Wow! Those curly eye guards make him look like Medusa.

That’s an awesome buck. I rode up on a buck just like that when I was riding dirt bike in eastern Oregon this summer. Everybody i was with just rode off I just sat there and watched him until he walked off. Wish I had a camera

Wow!

Bone, I'll take your rejects any day. I need to get out with my camera sometime soon for critters and I'd be thrilled with a photo like that. Thanks for sharing your talent with us.

I agree. If the rocks were sharp it would have worked. depth of field. This is always the choice in this kind of thing. EXCELLENT deer though.

Hog alert! Crazy he didn’t make the cut

Just found out he died of natural causes. Dang I was really looking forward to seeing what his antlers would do.

How’d you like to find that shed head. They let him keep it as well.

I was with him when he took that photo. I took Dennis and two other great photographers to him that evening. Fun evening!

Kinda breaks my heart.

Beautiful Buck and picture Doug. You take some amazing photos. Thank you

Me too actually. He really had the potential of being the biggest typical I had ever seen. I sure had an exciting time filming him. I had the thrill of the stalk, had a great photo session and watched him bed down. I was then able to return later with friends to find and film him agAin. Man......
Thanks Ironhead.

People talk about 200" typical Mule Deer this guy scored 212" gross.and netted around 207. RIP CLAW

He doesn't look terribly old. Do you think he was still on the upswing?
-
I thought he was robust, but I guess that doesn’t mean much.
-
He doesn't look "old". His ears aren't even shredded. Maybe because no one wanted to fight him... :chuckle:
-
I'm glad someone ended up with the head at least. Bummer he wasn't able to make it through the winter though. Glad I got to see some photos of him.
-
At what distance were these photos taken? What a gorgeous animal.
-
just curious on his death? someone you know found him, got hurt in a fight and infection? sad deal that trophy dies like that, but at the same time what an amazing buck that likely dodged hunters, bullets, arrows, until mother nature made him meet his maker.

I saw on Facebook that a hiker found him dead alongside a trail.

Sorry for your loss. :o
Gorgeous buck and framing of the shot. F-stop played havoc with the result. If the resolution could handle the enlargement, I'd try cropping out the left side and bottom out and resize the remainder. If that doesn't produce acceptable results, it would be a great postcard cropped in similar fashion. There's probably a still a market somewhere in this world for snail mail postcards from E. WA. Hard to let a shot that good shot slip away unused.
