Calling a new location this morning. Foggy as heck. I have never had good luck in the fog, but my ten day forecast says its all I'm getting, and furs will be getting thin soon. I have always suspected that the problem was visibility, and this morning reinforced that notion.
Got set up in this sheep pasture, did a couple of ki-yi's, and this other thing that I do with my call....don't really know what it is, but it works sometimes. I was pretty exposed, and just kept scanning....scan right...scan left....scan right....scan left. There was almost no cover...for me, or coyotes. So on the last scan, I see something different, right in front of me. Just looks like another weed, but I just "noticed" it. I put my scope on it, and even then it a couple of beats before I could see a set of ears. Yep, it's a coyote! Kind of facing me at an angle. I put the cross hair on the point of her shoulder, and touched one off. Coyote down!
I called another five minutes or so, and went to pick her up. Paced it off at just under ninety yards.
The thing is, it was a female in heat...there just had to be a male nearby. Probably was there, but I couldn't see him.
So, I'm wondering if he will be hanging around there looking for her. Seems likely.

Same here I use a coyote decoy after I get one of a pair usually the next day or if I shoot one in the morning I will go back right before dark. Its worked probably 30-40% of the time.
