I hate the "Dog Days" of July and August; so since boyhood, I have always found myself mentally avoiding the heat by dream planning of Fall bird hunting trips. I guess for me everything starts September 1 with a forest grouse hunt to the nearby Colville N.F. I hope for later trips to the Basin for pheasants, quail and huns, but I am dogless until my new GSP puppy gets old enough. Montana for sharptails and huns will need to wait, as well.
So...What are everyone's trip plans?

Im just guna head East and do alot of walking. I found some really great birds and areas last week near bridgeport. Make it a good 2 weeks with my son of walking, camping, and fire cooked birds. After that, no idea.

Living in the Denver area, I知 kind of spoiled. I have a ton of hunting opportunities within a 3 hr drive. I hunted Bobs in TX last year, but don稚 see any real reason to plan a big trip anymore. With that said, this year I値l probably hunt CO for pheasants, chickens, and blue quail. KS for pheasants, and NE for pheasants and Bobs. I can do all of those within a three hour drive.

I知 headed to South Dakota for their pheasant opener. Will be there about 3 days & then up to North Dakota for a week or so pheasants & ducks. If I can get a left over antelope tag from Montana, I値l stop there a week or so for my first antelope hunt. If I can稚 get a tag I値l either get a North Dakota deer tag and spend a week in the badlands or Montana birds at various public spots.

I am in your neck of the woods so will also be headed up north for Grouse, but once October rolls around I will be headed down south every chance I get. Iv got a 1 year old Lab that I have done a lot of training with and this will be his second season on wild roosters and quail. I also have a Vizsla pup who I been working with and want to get him on some birds. I can't wait for the season to start. I would love to take a couple trips out of the state but I just don't think that is feasible for me this year.

I'm in your neck of the woods as well. Ive never headed to the Colville area for grouse, always went to Conconully for them. Maybe ill have to give Colville area a go one day. Just head up and explore. Ive never pheasant hunted either but have seen the occasional one while quail hunting. I typically start September off by doing some dove hunting before they head out of dodge with the first storm. Always get a handful of them anyway. Then I try to make at least 1 or 2 trips after some grouse. Then I chase quail and huns until the cold shows up. Then its all about the fowlin. Sometime mix in a quail hunt or 2 until the end of fowl season. Mix in all the big game hunting and its a busy fall. I just hope work doesn't get in the way this year as it always seems too and I can get out and about. I have a shorthair and I hate not being able to get her out on birds. If yall ever find yourself in need of a second, let me know.

Like many of you in the audience, I too enjoy the mental masturbation of planning for the upcoming hunting season. Trips, gear, dog supplies, meals, lodging and so on - are all planned well in advance. Multiple time... Usually while on the clock...
It will be here before you know it!

Going back home to Nevada for a week of Chukar hunting with my Dad and my kids. Can wait to revisit my old canyons and see if I still remember each flush from 20 years ago.

North West quarter of the state somewhere. Got bunch of spots I used to hunt when I was a kid. Just need to see what still has water and if it got burnt up lately.
