Title: Browning A5?
Post by: Mfowl on August 05, 2018, 05:57:44 PM
I am going to be purchasing a new semi auto shotgun soon before waterfowl season gets here. I am curious if anyone out there is shooting the Browning A5? I seem to read some mixed reviews on this gun. Mostly they are good but there is enough bad ones to take notice. Cycling and ejection failures are the most common complaints. A lot of them refer to light loads like target/dove loads having issues. I am wondering if any owners of this gun have had these problems or any others for that matter. This will be a waterfowl gun and it will see very little use in the uplands or on the trap line. I am just looking to get some more opinions before dropping a stack of cash. I am also considering the Maxus and Affinity 3. I currently have a Stoeger M3000 that I am not impressed with. Any insight is appreciated, thanks!

I'd call Browning customer service (technical) and get an idea from them how light of a load the A5 will handle.  They will know.

I love my Browning A5.  Haven't had any cycling issues with any loads.  I use it for both waterfowl and upland.  I shouldered quite a few shotguns before deciding on the A5.  And would suggest the same to see what feels best.

Thanks! I have handled a lot of guns already and will continue to do so before I make a purchase. Which version do you have? 3", 3.5", Stalker, Hunter, Wicked Wing?

I have my Dads A5. Made in 1962. Used it for duck and geese. Started shooting it at clay targets with light loads. Wouldn't eject the empty. Went to Browning site and and found out that you can adjust the setting. Actually had intructions under the forend. open it up and move the silver ring to the other end of the spring. Now no problems. I don't explain things real well but I thought it was broken and was ready to sent it to Browning.

I have a license made Savage A5, Korean war vintage, I believe.  Best gun I have for killing clays.

I know a guy who bought one of the new ones. He really likes it and I must say it felt good to shoulder. The only problem with it is the stock cracked on it last I heard and he was going to get in touch with Browning about it.

Damn, I sold an early 60s A5 with that issue. I thought it was broke so I sold it. 🤢. I wish I would have held on to it. The decisions you make when you are young and dumb...

I had read another review where someone had experienced this same thing. They had to ship it back to Browning and it took weeks to correct. I really like this gun but some of the bad reviews make me nervous.

A5s are overpriced. I chose an SX4 over it and the Beretta A400 Extreme Unico last fall.

The SX4 is also made by FN in Belgium. I prefer gas guns in 12 gauge and liked the way the SX4 felt in hand compared to the A5 which felt "cheap"

I picked up an A5, 3" Stalker model, matte black. So far I am pleased with it. I put some waterfowl rounds through it while patterning it and also shot a variety of gameloads during the dove opener. Its light weight, swings fast and was fun to shoot. No issues thus far. Thanks for the input all!
