Title: Blue Mountain Foothills West
Post by: SilkOnTheDrySide on September 19, 2018, 10:28:01 AM
Anyone else have this tag this year and planning on hunting the full week. I’ll be by myself for most of this trip, so seeing what other tag holders will be around to drink beer with after we smoke a 200” whitetail 😆

I am planning on heading in the evening of the 8th in prep for the Friday opener.

Surely there will be at least a little beer drinking going on at the Last Resort.

Seen some BIG deer in there during elk season. Hope for snow and don’t hesitate to take one of the masher two points that seem to be all over in there. They have some serious mass on those antlers.

There's a 3 point minimum restriction.

They are thick like flies over there, practically management bucks.

Oldest daughter drew this one and the youngest drew the muzzy tag that starts on the 20th.  Probably do the first weekend and the last if needed then move on to the muzzy tag with my youngest.

We aren't looking for 200" deer though, just nice 4x4 whitetails.  More than anything looking forward to seeing a bunch of deer and spending family time in the woods with lower pressure.

Well, couple scouting trips in the books, a ton of help from HW members, couple of farmer phone calls and a good trailer spot in the heart of deer country, and I think I’m about as ready as can be.

Went and shot the rifle for final confirmation this weekend from 125-455 yards and didn’t miss.

My 7 year old son and I leave Thursday after some dentist appointments, and I’ll be in for a week.  My buddy will be meeting me Thursday night and staying until Sunday when he takes my son home.

I don’t have giant expectations, just a relaxing week chasing deer.  I’m really hoping for an opportunity while my son is there!

I’ve got service in most places so plan on some updates!

Heading over Thursday night.  Jessica only has a half day of school on Friday and no school Monday in observance of Veteran's Day.  My first 20 years out of the military I didn't get or take Veteran's day holiday off, always brought donuts to work for Veteran's day.  This will be my fourth Vetran's day off in a row and I will get to spend it with my 16 year old daughter.  Hoping she gets one but just going to enjoy the time in the woods with her.

Good luck to all the tag holders.

Man I hope we see a moose.

We have been over for doe hunts in 154 when the kids were 10-11.  We saw mule deer, whitetail deer, turkeys, coyotes and even a cougar.  Haven't seen an elk with the kids yet or a bear.  A moose would be cool for them to see.

Most awesome day ever. Jessica got a shot at a nice 4x4 this morning, buck fever got her and she missed. We hunted that deer the rest of the morning. Couldn’t get close again. Maybe tomorrow.

We saw a bull calf moose and it’s mother. Epic.

Then in the afternoon we decided to shoot the rifle since we weren’t seeing anything just to make sure she was on. Looked to the left and two does and a wallhanger buck are running away from our target practice. No shot but it was cool to see.

Was snowing when we came off the hill tonight.

Can’t wait for tomorrow.

Morning started pretty slow, afternoon was looking to be the same until three mature does walked out in front of us.  We kept waiting for the buck but he never showed.

My 7 year old is on his first deer hunt and was a trooper!!

Going to road hunt a bit in the AM to let him recuperate a bit and do an afternoon sit.

We were able to observe three different groups of does with no bucks...come on rut!

Found two 4x4’s bed down about 100 yards apart today. First buck was 268 yards, he stood and ran when he got up. No shot. Second buck was 290 yards away and didn’t budge when the other buck left. We moved in to 200 yards. He was bedded broadside. Jessica shot and missed over the top of him. Did some more practice and she is super confident again. I think the last three years of getting a deer with her bow has her more than a little rifle rusty. It’s not just like a bicycle you have to practice a bit more than she did before season.

I think if we get another chance she will get it done. If not we’ve had a blast.

Hopefully tomorrow is the day we put it all together.

We had a spike sneak in that my son spotted first, I thought he was going to come out of his boots he was so excited.  Then a doe popped out with about three minutes left of light.

My son leaves tomorrow and my hunt plan changes a bit as I’ll be able to hunt all day putting on some big miles.

This morning we hiked up into the National Forest, caught one doe up on a ridge.

But the real gem of this hike was when we heard antlers slamming together.  Our excitement perked hoping it was a couple of stud whitetail going at it.  But then we heard the scream and knew it was a pair of bulls.

We rounded the corner and my son got to see 7 blue mountain bulls in all their glory, including one who was fully crowned and likely pushing 350”.

My son had to go home today to get ready for school and I pushed into some river drainages.

I ended up seeing 15-ish mule deer including a rag 4x3 who was as dumb as they come.  I’m shocked he made it through general.

This evening found me sitting on the same spot, hoping a buck would come in after the does.  Three does showed themselves, but no buck.  Off to a different unit tomorrow to try and change my stats.

Saw four coyotes today. Saw a ton of deer on some private ground we got access to and adjacent properties. Hit the high country in Dayton for lunch and saw four does in the national forest. Headed back to blue creek for the evening and saw at least 30 does in farmers fields. In blue creek we saw 30 deer, couple of small bucks fighting but not shooters.

Tomorrow is our last day. It’s been a great hunt so far fingers crossed for one more opportunity tomorrow.

I won’t confirm Ricks daughters story...but I did miss an absolute pig this morning.  Tough, time sensitive shot.  Saw 5 total bucks today, three in private.  I’ll be back at it tomorrow trying to knock one down!

It’s getting cold as F out here!!!

Good luck dude! Looking forward to seeing how the week pans out.

Also, need to get out soon to kill birds or paper...

Long weekend and didn't get home until late last night.  Tons to do but here is a pic.  I will start a new thread with the whole story and it's a great one when I get some more time.

Good luck to the rest of the tag holders.  It is starting to happen.  Saw three bucks cruising yesterday all day looking for does.  It should get better as the season moves on.

Don't give up.

I decided to end my season this morning when I peaked over the ridge and this little four point was feeding down below with some does.  I couldn’t be happier with my first whitetail!  This hunt far exceeded my expectations, and I worked my butt off chasing these guys.

Huge thanks to Rick, Brian, Cimmeron and my buddy Adam.

372 yards with my Hells Canyon 28 Nosler hand loaded with 195 Berger’s absolutely crushed him.

Great job Travis.  You did have a great hunt.  The opportunity and the experience is what it is all about, filling the tag is just a bonus.  Glad you were able to seal the deal on a good buck.  372? That is stretching it out a bit, way to go.  Get that trailer off the hill before the snow gets there.

Congrats!  Those late season whitetail permit hunts are super fun...cold weather, sometimes snow, usually plenty of deer, not many other hunters out...maybe not a huge buck, but a quality hunt in my book.

One thing to note about this hunt, it is a buck hunt not considered quality by WDFW.  I would say with all the different GMU's that you are allowed to hunt and the time of year this hunt is right up there and in line with the type of experience you get on a quality hunt.  We hunted 149,154 and 162.  Each one of them had different things that I liked about them.  Every day we saw deer and had opportunity.  We even had a shot at an absolute wall hanger on day two that ended up actually being a nice two point with his antlers turned just right.  :chuckle:

@Woodchuck set me straight that it was not a wall hanger, it was barely a coat hanger.

Shhhhh.

One thing that’s blown me away is how many people draw this tag and seemingly don’t hunt it...I never once had to compete for a spot.

This hunt worked out well for us. I’m guessing success odds aren’t that high on this hunt any most probably get discouraged with how tough this hunt can be if you don’t really do your homework. Land is constantly changes hands in these units. My number one spot was posted when I got there. Two different private land options dried up and weren’t options. Because I had multiple options it still worked out. I hope people don’t read this thread and see two of the three people on this thread have already tagged out. There are a bunch of these tags and I wonder how many actually get filled. I also wonder how many people tag out before this hunt. I know my daughter drew this one and a doe tag that was good during the general season.

Great post Rick.  People may read this and think this was a slam dunk hunt. But all three tag holders in this thread have worked their butts off on research and scouting.  I’ve sat in landowner kitchens, researched land, made multiple scouting trips, and rarely saw camp in the daylight.

I commented to FillTheFreezer the other day that I forgot how much work front country hunts can be.  My legs are just as smoked as they are from a Backcountry hunt.  It took multiple days of hard hunting.  Not to mention plan D thanks to the fog.

They certainly didn’t have them tied up somewhere 😆

You just made two more great points.  Weather, uhg!  Yes the fog rolling in just screws you up.  And you aren't lying about the hiking.  We hunted all day everyday, no stopping and taking a cat nap, we were on the move constantly.  We were hiking 8-10 miles a day and some of those canyons are no joke.  Heck some of the wheat fields were no joke.  My daughter and I were both amazed at some of the slopes that they drive those tractors on.

This is a great hunt and we enjoyed it to the fullest but I would not call it a slam dunk, show up and shoot a buck hunt.  There is a ton of work that goes into it before and during the hunt.  It worked out for my daughter but we were literally minutes from eating the tag and just like that on the drive out the fog cleared a little and we saw a buck in a huntable spot.  At that point she had given up and my wife had to talk her into trying one more time.  Boy am I glad we did.

One more thing I should add to this thread for anyone hunting does or second deer tag does, I saw a ton of spike bucks and they were really hard to tell the difference between them and does.  Be careful if you are doe hunting this year.
