Looking forward to trapping this year. Living back at the farm and 10 min from my line. Have done a little scouting and the beaver population has grown. Seeing a bunch of otter sign again as well.
-
Right on! Missed your story line last year especially all the pics !
-
Have a GREAT year! Be safe and take lots of photos! :)
-
Thanks guys. Will definitely take lots of photos. I think my girlfriend is going to trap with me this year so I’m updating all my trap tags to include her wild id was well.
-
Good luck this year!
-
Good luck jasnt. I'll be following along.

Thats good to hear.
Almost all my productive Beaver spots are empty of sign this year. My have to do some traveling for trapping the year.
-
Hoping to get a cat and otter this year. Hoping the snow doesn’t get so deep this year
-
Got 2 sets in today. Forgot to take a pic of the mink set.
-
Good luck!
-
Nothing yet but only have a beaver head for bait. Hoping to hit the rats hard this weekend

Looking forward to seeing your success!
-
Well checked tonight and door closed :IBCOOL: . I was all excited as I walked up to the set.... empty :bash: :bash: I forgot the trap we set I had not installed the door locks :bdid: :bash: Why I insist on learning the hard way is beyond me.
-
Assume you missed a possum, it makes it less painfull!
-
No grinners in my area that I know of. Hoping it was a coon
-
I'll send you some I got possum coming out my ears around my house :bash: damn trash can wrecking bald face little........
-
Update. All traps are pulled till my daughter gets her deer
-
Best of luck to her!
-
Got a few sets in today. Also testing out a new swim threw design 6ga 2”x4” welded wire. 12x12x48
-
That channel looks like a slam dunk set jasen!
-
Caught several beaver there in the past
-
My new swim threw design
-
Did you get the idea for that design off a Trapper man thread? I remember seeing pics of a identical trap
-
My new swim threw design
The only problem I can see with that trap is if there is any water flowing, that debris such as leaves, sticks would be caught by the door blocking it from a creature going in forcing it around or over the trap.
JC :twocents:.
-
How much does it weigh?
Can you make them 40" long?
Looks like it should work well.
-
No I just got sick of fixing traps after getting them out of the ice. Saw this welded wire at north 40 and figured they’d last forever. They are identical to my old design but 6ga wire so no ribs and no welding. Could make them 40” long just have to cut 8” off before bending. I go 48” cause it’s faster. Did a 10”x10”x48 tonight. I can stand on the trap. Dosent seem heavy at all compared to my old traps. Easy to pack cause so much easier to grab with gloves on.

not loosing any otters this year :chuckle:

Jasnt, what size panels did that wire come in and what did it cost ya? Thanks!

4’x12’. $40 and it made 3 traps but it’s not easy to bend! I’m working on a bender to get nice square corners.
I could go cheaper with 6ga 4”x4” wire. May go that route next traps I do. 6ga wire seems perfect for the 110 triggers
-
Nice. I’ve got a bender so that shouldn’t be an issue. What brand are the panels? Thanks!
-
I picked them up at north 40
-
Right on buddy
-
Moved some sets around today. Gota get my rat traps out.
Nice meeting you today Tom, good luck

4x4 will let some smaller otters go just FYI.
-
I in fact had an otter chew out of one of my first trap building attempts. The round hole it used to escape was 3 1/2" across.
-
That’s very good to know thank you guys
-
That last pic is some pretty country.
-
I’ve met 4 trappers this week. I think the days of trapping this property solo are gone
Beautiful place all over it. It’s my favorite place on earth!!
-
It does seem like there is a surge in people taking the class

im not worried. Very very few people know this property as well as I do. They will burn out when the snow comes
-
Waiting to see you get some cats ! I’ve been hanging baits kinda prepping for January trapping a little earlier this year but I’ve only had one bait hit so far

Got 5 prebaits out today and found some fresh otter sign and set it
-
Starting to get some rat sets in. Had one in a swim threw today and I could see where the rats where going around the trap so I set a colony next to it. Moving one of my swim threws and had to walk past it again. Had a rat in it in less than 30 min
-
 good sized one too
-
You getting any ice yet Jason?
-
The big one was the fresh catch. No ice right now but it’s coming. Low of 9 Thursday
-
Gotta love a big fat rat!
-
Bait sights are getting hits
-
Gonna be a cat in a cage for you this year jasen :IBCOOL:
-
I’m sure hoping so

Was hoping to get my cat sets out today but spent the day plowing snow

Good Luck looking forward to seeing you holding a cat.

not yet but I’m hoping to see one before January 1st
-
Good luck!
-
Well I’m not sure what’s going on. They cat I had hitting bait every single night went mia the day I swapped the bait from tree to in the trap set right at the bait tree we got 3” of snow. Cat has not come back in just over a week. May pull it and move to the next bait site that’s 2 miles away that is still getting hit. Should I rebait the tree? I’m not sure if the cat was hitting both of these spots and abandoned the tree with the trap or it just hasn’t come this way since the snow.
-
Can you set both spots? That's what I would do. If the first one has been caught or something else happened to it, then another one will move in. Could be he's just made or found another kill and has just been hanging out there. I'd give it time.
-
I would give it between 1-2 weeks then as simple as moving it 50 yards could be the ticket
Keep at it !!! Hang a bird wing with a little castor smear on it with some fishing line so it can flutter
-
And you're positive it was a cat?
-
And you're positive it was a cat?
not 100%. How many critters can get 6’ up a tree and eat on meat while hanging there.

Raccoons are pretty handy at it and they like beaver too. Hopefully its a Tom with a big range that just needs to swing back around
-
That’s true it could have been a coon but you would think after almost 2 weeks I would have caught the coon that was eating on the bait every night for a week

Used to use a similar method in Montana. Would throw a tin full of cheap sardines in the cubby, then, douse some juice on the container and tie it to a branch up above/close to the set by a piece of trapping wire. It flutters in even the slightest breeze and reflects in the moonlight. Cats are very curious and are drawn to the flash. They don’t smell that well but have good eyesight ;)
