Really enjoying this season after back surgery a couple months ago. As always, starting off with muskrats.

Nice Work!
-
very cool!
-
Put one cat trap out and quickly picked up this nice tom.
-
Didn't weigh him but I'd guess 24ish.
-
Nice cat. That is a dandy
-
Nice one!!!
-
So hard for me to photograph toms that close. That snarl and leap gets me everytime :chuckle:
Good work nails
-
A good friend has been asking for a bobcat to eat so I gave him the cat I just trapped. Well we had a game night at his place and guess what was for dinner? :chuckle: Turns out bobcat is deliceous! :EAT:
-
Mmmmm

Oh it gets me too. Always seems to be the females that snarl the most. :chuckle:
-
Nice double on a single wide this morning. Also had a mink or raccoon eat the rat out of the back of a mink trap. Covered the back better and hopefully have another mink in the morn.
-
Setting in some nice rat area.
-
First mink of the season.
-
Cool picture. Man that water looks fun to trap. Plus it isn't frozen
-
Great pics! And definitely wish I had some areas like that for rats!
-
VERY cool photos!!!
-
Looks like your off to a great start! Nice work
-
Nice Mink photo, be thankful you still have Muskrats to trap the population here in Skagit county is still in the dumps. There is a few in the local lakes but a lot of the swamps and sloughs are void of rat sign.
Have a safe season.

That's unfortunate. They are a blast to trap. Any idea why?
-
No idea why, maybe disease or predators, I did notice the few I caught last year had little to no fat on them.
-
From what I’ve read muskrat go through cycles w with the population just like rabbits. They eat them selves out of house and home and end up with a huge die off. Then they rebound and the population gets huge. Then they eat them selves out of house and home again. I can’t remember how long the cycle was though
-
Pond muskrats seem more vulnerable to that than running water rats
-
Nice job. Great pictures of the mink. Every time I get close to one in a cage they squeal like crazy. Last year we saw a pond in eastern Washington that had at least a dozen muskrats siting around easting grass everytime we passed by. rarely see them here unless at night.
-
Even with a single wide in bigger water it is easy to funnel the rats into the trap. Crazy how oily these little buggers are.
-
Another chomper.
-
Nice 🐈
-
Set a double wide where the ditch crosses the road here
4 rats the first night and 2 the next.
-
Doing great!!
-
Had 2 more cats tonight. Kept this one and released the other.
-
 I’m jealous!! Waiting until New Years weekend and it’s driving me crazy

BTW, thanks for all the comments everyone. It's a lot of work for a tech-challenged swamp crawler like me to post pics on here and it can get discouraging if it seems like no one is following.
-
Only a couple of muskrats today but one was a lunker!
-
That one looks like it will go 2x for sure I'm still on the hunt for a 3x he's gotta be out there somewhere! Merry Christmas by the way!

Crazy how calm he was in the cage on your video. I've caught 1 muskrat alive and holy heck was that guy MAD! Bouncing around growling hissing biting they are really a ferocious sounding critter when they are upset!

:chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle: Noisey little sucker!!
-
You using beaver meat and a lure? I had limited success with a muskrat quarter and moonshine. Kinda quit but all your catches are making me think I should give it another whirl
-
:chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle: Noisey little sucker!!
I caught a female one time and the water had really frozen the door shut hard. She squealed for like 10 minutes straight getting it open
-
Every mink I ever caught was a screamer

Just straight muskrat. All my traps smell pretty minky now so there is that.

Seen an extraordinary amount of chubby joggers on the way to check traps this morning. :chuckle: I imagine the gyms are full too.

It's the Annual New Year Resolution Chub run.

Speaking of chubbies (not me). 56 pound chub today.
-
Excellent work

Every mink I ever caught was a screamer
That's funny because out of all the ones I have caught only 1 has ever made a sound and it was just a growl.
-
I've never caught a live one!

Another big fatty today along with a muskrat and mink.

Dang that's a chubby one! Nice tail too ;)

I see you pulling in these beaver, I've been going at this for about 3 weeks and can't seem to catch one, what's the trick? I've got one swim through and one single door treadle trap.

I wish you were closer, I'd show you. I'm a channel trapper. I always set in their runs.
-
Find the feed find the house set in between. Funnels and pinch points are your friends. Runs are always good don't be afraid to block it down a little, and dive sticks are CRITICAL. The single door is good for a castor baited set like fatslinger uses to great effect but needs to be a very large trap I get refusals with a 12x18. If your set in a solid run they are traveling in with dive sticks you will catch them. Probably muskrat and otter as well if they are in the area

I've been watching utube videos all day and gotta say 3nails you got it going on,really awesome your son goes with you so much.

Wow he is a beast

Checked a couple of baits and had nice cats hitting two of them. Set traps even with the terrible conditions coming up of good weather and poor moon phase. Oh well, you never know.

Beautiful big Tom tonight.

love your photos. the mink is cool. did you get the cat in the trap you pictured?

I wish you were closer, I'd show you. I'm a channel trapper. I always set in their runs.
Your videos super make me want to get back out there. First few years I was pretty successful. Had one bad experience with some locals that kinda made me "iffy" about what I was doing. Where Im from, basically EVERYWHERE looks like where your at in your videos.
First trapped animal ever, was a mink 3xl mink. Ive caught one beaver, tons of muskrat, and two mink so far. One live - Made alittle noise then shut up when I tossed the cage in the water to go check the rest of my traps.
That "bad" experience I had left a sour taste in my mouth. I have lots of traps I've collected and built over the 5 years since I started trapping. Some really nice guillotine style ones and some with spring loaded doors. I had about 14 traps out on one specific line in a swampy area kind of like your video.
Public land, fairly rural with some local houses scattered around.
I had all these traps set, I came back the next morning and notice one of my traps pulled out of the water and set on the trail..
Went to check it out and I notice about 10 of my traps all pulled out of the water and set in a pile.
First of all, how the heck did this person know where all my sets were? Some of these were burred in water and grass and still were found.
After that I was kinda happy that they didn't just steal my traps but man its an uneasy feeling knowing someone messed with that much of your stuff.
Havent really had the guts to set my traps back out since.
-
Great cat congrats

Sounds like a bit of a turf war.
Trapping is a lot like life in general. You can have a really bad day but with just a few subtle changes you can have great success the next day. No matter how bad of a day I have on the trapline I have renewed hope every morning.
Still plenty of season left. Set a trap! And post some pics. All trappers love seeing others success and failures because we all have both daily.

Not a bad idea, I bought my trapping license this year and then broke my hand real bad a few days later so I figured that was a waste of money.
What, trapping seasons over at the end of the month right? "Without me looking"
Not a bad idea though. With as cold as its been latley and as late in the season it is, still might be able to get my hands on a few good furs.
I have some good spots that are less than 5 minutes from the house. You know what, Tomorrow Im gonna go dig out and re straighten all my traps and atleast go out and set a few. Thanks for the encouragement. If I do ill make sure to start my own thread.

Reset some beaver traps this week and they are producing well. Hopefully they'll translate to some more cats!
-
Slam dunk set.
-
Nice size tail on that one! That'll make a wallet or 2 :chuckle:
-
Thought I'd have a little fun experimenting today. I know alot of trappers say you won't catch as many cats when you have a cam pointed at the cage but that has not been my experience. Almost every cat I've caught throuout the years was caught on cam going into the trap. Since I'm trapping for fun and not numbers I thought it would be interesting to see if I could get one on video from inside the trap. No big deal if I don't catch him. If I do hopefully he doesn't destroy my cam! :chuckle:
-
.
-
Well that should be an awesome video of any visitors at all!
-
There's also a cam pointed at it on the outside.
-
Nice that will be very cool!
-
RIGHT ON!!!! I'm excited to see it!
-
It will be cool to see what happens.
-
The cat didn't return last night. Checked the card on the tree but made sure not to walk in front of the trap so not to trigger the one inside. Put out 4 more baits.
-
With the drastic weather change coming Sunday I better pull all my water traps before they get frozen in. Forecasted low of 14 and high of 22 here in Whatcom Co. Should boost the cat trapping a bit however.
-
Just got back from checking the trap with the cam in it. Every check all week and no action other than the door being down one night. Pulled the sd card just to see if anything came by and I've got some pretty amazing video that I didn't expect. I'll post some as soon as I get them on my YouTube channel.
-
Looking forward to see what you got

10 last video for today.
-
Pretty cool! So what triggered the cage between 6&7?
-
:yeah:
-
Apparently after the video ends he backs out. I have several videos of him over the next 12 hrs or so rummaging around the back of the trap so I think he shook the cage enough to drop the door. He just kept coming back but never fully committed. I'm sure I would have caught him if the cam wasn't in there but to be honest I like the video better. Less work. :chuckle: It would help if I took the time to set the date and time right on the cam too.

That's really cool 3nails. Thanks for posting.

Tonight's angry snow cat.

Good stuff @3nails. Your cats sure are cool looking up there. Not as much on the fur market I know but were I to do a mount, I'd look to trade for a winter Western Washington cat

Workin mans trapline is all I've ever known! Keep up the great work

Nice work on the cats!
-
I just whipped out a new muskrat trap to be used in deeper channels where I trap. I'll make a quick video tonight to explain why.

awesome 3nails cant wait for the video of it being emptied out.

This is en genius! I hope to see it in action!

3nails: What do you put in these under water rat traps for bait?
-
3nails: What do you put in these under water rat traps for bait?
Nothing. I experimented with mint toothpaste but found no increase in catch. I set in runs or likely travel routes. Beaver runs are now one of my favorite sets for these larger sets. I'll try to make a video on how I keep the beavers out of the runs if we ever thaw out.
-
 thanks i love the videos.
-
Nice looking trap
-
Very cool, I like it!
-
Still waiting for a bit more thaw before resetting the traps so I thought we'd do a little coyote calling. Second stand called in 3 and killed 2 of them. Nasty little buggers.
-
 awesome sir.
-
nice work
-
Thanks redi,it's not as easy and cut and dry as i thought. :chuckle: Learn learn listen listen.

I can handle slicing into a nasty puss pocket on a Beaver hide, No way I'm going to pick up those mangy Coyotes bare handed. :chuckle:

Turned out to be a darn good mink.

Really winding down now. Sunshine and warmer weather have my mind on other activities. Pulling all my water traps next weekend. Picked up a couple more very large mink. Also set my new colony trap in my hot spot and I'll make a video of the first check on it tomorrow or Tuesday. Pretty excited about that!

Nice work!

Checked that colony trap tonight and was very pleased with it's performance. I'll make a slight improvement to it by removing the trap door going from bottom to top. I believe the 6 rats in the top prevented the door from opening keeping the 2 on the bottom from going up.

I will more than likely have a couple in the back of my truck at the rendezvous.
