they aren't rare but usually the colored up ones are down south.

Those are some really nice pics of a gorgeous bird
-
Thank you!

Is that a Northern Shoveler?

Is that a Northern Shoveler?
Yes, a.k.a. Spoonbill or Hollywood Mallard. A fully plumed drake is one of the most gorgeous puddle ducks in North America.
If you find yourself down in Northern California on a hunt there will be days where other than pintail (daily limit 2) the only birds working will be spoonies. Lots and lots of them.
-
In Sacramento valley I did not want to fill my limit with them even though they were decoying crazy. But It is always fun to kill them if you find someone to eat them!

saw a couple of colored up drake shovelers today as I was driving to some goose hunting.

Same here! A colored up drake shoveler has always been a bucket list bird of mine. Finally got it done a couple weeks ago. Got three drakes but one had perfect plumage. A Barrows drake is a bird my brother has always wanted. It was very unexpected but we got both of our birds on the same hunt! They will definitely be taking up more space on the wall! I will try to get some pictures attached. I may need help in doing so but I'll give it a try first.
-
I can't seem to get the pictures posted. If anyone could post them for me I'll send the pictures your way! Thanks

I shot one two years ago, it flew by a bit over head height and I could immediately tell what it was. Very cool bird to look at and it tasted good as well, or at least I don't remember it tasting bad. Looking back, I should have had it mounted as I haven't even seen one since then.

I got a nice colored up one this year. I think it was November. Was the first real colored one I have gotten. There were 2 like that in a group of 5 that came in. I guess I didnt realize that getting a good colored one around here is that much of a challenge. I will take spoonies all day long, they make just as good of jerky as everything else.
-
very nice where was this shot taken at?
-
I got a spoonie hen this season and thought it tasted just fine. Sure, it wasn't a mallard, but they certainty aren't bad eating!
-
Here are the two birds from earlier this year. Two bucket list birds on one hunt. Soon enough they will be headed down to Lane Wildlife Artistry!(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190219/6b48173f3cc81c1ed32693b64b1bcc03.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190219/c354b763c64077d0005bd0eab2741999.jpg)

Nice birds!

Ridgefield refuge is spoonbill capital. Can’t tell you how many limits of those “greenheads” I’ve shot down there. Some days it’s all i have seen :chuckle:
-
The first full daily limit I hit in 2017 was over in the first 20 minutes because of a flock of those goofy things. haha. Their profile as they fly is so distinctive it makes me chuckle. A group came in real tight together. Couldnt have picked a single bird out if I wanted to. Knew what they were though, let a shot fly. 2 shots, 5 hen spoonies, hahaha. Picked up a couple widgeon 10 min later and was limited. Doubt I will ever leave for home with more birds than shots fired again :chuckle:

Another place that has Plumed out Drake Spoonies late season is the McNary NWR fee hunt area. Too bad this year it was closed for the last 35 days of the season due to the Government shutdown.
-
Drove to Saskatchewan Canada for bear hunting and they were everywhere in full color phase, bummer I broke my good camera
-
Would love to get a harli, drake spoon, red head, can

oops. assumed the spoonie was but looks like either light not hitting it all the way or not fully plumed out. either way, nice bird. ive been after a plumed out drake for a long time
-
I have been after this one for 5 years. Flew over at 20 yards yesterday. To bad I was in the excavator.
-
A Spoonie? We charge $5 to the blind fund for spoonies. Plenty in the snoqualmie valley.

Yah the light must not have been hitting it. If I remember I’ll post up a pic when I get it back.
