I am currently enrolled in an online course, going straight to my masters 100 ton, and am scheduled to test on February 12th and then hopefully have everything in place to be a relief skipper for some of my friends out in Neah Bay as needed, and my regular work schedule allows.
Any advice on testing or where to focus my attention in this last month. Currently I have been taking loads of coast guard practice tests focusing mostly on rules of the road.

Rules of the road, Nav aids ( cans, nuns, dolphin etc) , lighting (red-green...red, red, red etc) , low viz signals(short burst long burst, bells etc) a little about knots, probably some compass variation/deviation stuff, time/distance/speed, ….I took the course a couple years ago and ended up with my Masters 50 ton. I'll rack my brain a little more and add some more tips as they come to me.
If you study and have a back ground in boating the test isn't really that hard.

Did you by chance know or met a Vance Game that owned a grocery store ?

I've got my 6-pack and the thing I recall is that that navigation part was very unforgiving - if you only missed two out of 15 or so you failed...? Been a few years, but I remember being stressed about that part. Make sure you're up to speed on it, regardless.

If you're anchored at night and dragging anchor what lights would you display?
-
Can you test online? Or,do you have to go to Coast Guard I know they are shutdown currently
-
what test are you taking on the 12th? There's several required for the 100 ton certification
-
Rules of the road, deck safety, deck general, piloting and navigation, and OUPV upgrade to master

It's a proctored exam by mariners learning center. Honestly, with the amount t of time I have put in, and feel like I still need to I should have done an in person class.

So plotting dead on is a must the questions build off one another, deck safety and general know the CFR's and/or how to find anything CFR related. Nav rules side lights, shapes, and pecking order are still stuck in my head. I'd refresh on the light list and coast pilot as well.

Same as a vessel restricted in ability to maneuver for the size of your vessel.
Red whit red sidelights and stern.

Good luck on that test tomorrow!

I got my 6-pack last summer, its the same material as what you will be doing, chart nav was pretty hard for me, rules of the road was pretty hard too, study on everything! Good luck!
-
If you're confident with the charting and navigation portion, just keep pounding those practice tests. Many of the questions on the written portion/rules of the road came directly from those tests, or were subtly different. They helped me a lot when I got my 50 ton
-
Well, I think that I am as ready as I can be. I took the advice from a lot of you and pounded the rules of the road section, I have been getting about 1/50 questions wrong on the practice tests. My test got rescheduled to Tuesday the 19th and I have everything else taken care of for the Coast Guard application.
All said and done, I bet I have 200 hours into the online course plus studying.
-
I got mine over 25 years ago but can't think of anything helpful. Just go with your gut, I'm sure you know everything you need. Good luck!!
-
Well everybody, it is all over! I took my test yesterday and it took me an hour and thirty five minutes to complete the Navigation, Rules of the Road, Deck General, General Navigation Rules, and the Masters 100 ton upgrade. I whipped through the test, I studied way harder than I probably had to but either way I passed and the effort was worth it.
My package will be turned in to the Coast Guard today. Hopefully I will have my license in hand by May 1 and be ready to go for halibut.
