Title: Alaska Winter Mountain Goat Hunt! Just gonna send it!!!!!
Post by: Karl Blanchard on January 31, 2019, 12:34:53 PM
WHELP!!!!  Title pretty much says it all! In 2012 My little brother's first duty station in the Army was Ft Richardson in Anchorage Alaska.  He finished a Pashto language course at Ft. Benning in Georgia, jumped in his truck, drove straight through to Anchorage, hit the DMV to apply for his residency, backed his truck that was loaded with everything he owned into a heated storage unit, and hopped on a commercial flight to Afghanistan to link up with his new band of brothers.  13 months later he returned as an Alaskan resident :IBCOOL:

Since that day we have dreamed of using his residency to hunt something that most will never be able to.  Problem has always been timing.  Block leave has never lined up correctly, and increased training and deployments since moving to Ranger Regiment have been constant.

Our older brother Aaron always talked of elk adventures in other states but we never made it happen for various reasons.  After the tragic day that that rocket attack took him from us Michael and I vowed that we would never "just talk" about doing something ever again!

Michael returns Monday from his most recent deployment and his leave dates give us a little window of opportunity finally head to the great white north! February 15th we fly to Kodiak for a DIY winter Mountain Goat hunt.  An animal that is at the very top of both our bucket lists!

Short daylight, weather, snow, etc. will surely make this an adventure we will not soon forget.  Less than three weeks till game day and prep work has been in full swing! Lots of pics coming soon!

Wow, that should be pretty epic.  Although I didn't lose a loved one, I am of the same mindset and have really focused on spending time getting my brother out hunting as well as booking family vacations.  Tempis fugit, memento mori.

That's going to be a great hunt. When I hunted brownies on Kodiak we saw quite a few goats. Watch one come down to the river and cross and head back up the other side. My guide has taken clients to some pretty nice goats. Good luck and look forward to the story.

well someone just jinxed us  >:( :nono: :chuckle:

Seriously though, it's been a crazy mild winter up there.  The killer up there is the wind though.  The southern end of the island gets POUNDED this time of year. With all the lakes frozen we will be forced to land on the salt and start from 0ft of elevation :'( with almost double the goat population south of Uyak bay the focus is down south.  Hair should be amazing 😍

Thanks all for the encouraging words.  I've been very reluctant to make purchases, book flights, organize gear, or anything of the sort that we do for a normal hunt until I knew it was going to be a for sure thing.  With Michael days away from being back on American soil I feel better about really ramping things up!  Hopefully I can cash in the few karma points I may have on a nice representation of the species.  Excitement and nervousness is starting to set in :o

Your going to have a great hunt!  Just talked to my best friend who flies the island for a living and he said he just talked to one of his fisherman and the goats are down low ,50-500ft right off the salt. As long as you can get there, weather permitting you'll do good.
Only problem you'll have is after this your going to want to go back for more.

He said if you want to send me your number he will connect you with a buddy who just got back from down there and can give you as much info as you need.
Good luck!!

absolutely!  PM inbound!  At this point I dont know what to believe lol.  Bio says oh they stay high! Long time guide says they move with the snow line and will be around 1,200.  Dean with Andrew's airways says the same.  One constant is big billies will be on wind swept ridges around 2,000+. At this point the plan is hit the beach and start stepping until we see hairy white creatures :chuckle:

Normally the unknown excites me going into a hunt but this one is a bit different.  I get on GE and scout all these peaks and short mountain ranges but I have zero idea what I'm supposed to be looking at  :chuckle:. I feel like so much is being left in the hands of a stranger to drop us in a spot that will produce with hard work.

Everything in Alaska is expensive! Even a 100% DIY hunt is still thousands of dollars! $550 commercial flight.  $760 goat tag.  $1,000 float plane ride (one way :yike:).  That's not counting impending taxidermy costs, some added gear, etc.  Thank goodness for some old friends and new that offered some gear to borrow.

yessir!  A bow would be cool and I feel I could get it done but I may never get a chance to take a goat again so my desire to kill a Billy outweighs my desire to try with a bow.

The 300wsm is chootin good!  I've got a solid load I've been using.  185 gr berger vld at 3,110fps.  Just for giggles I loaded up some 200gr accubonds at max book with h4831sc, seated the same as my bergers.  Literally just slapped em together just because.  Figured I'd like something that's a bit more stout to have in the tube in case of bear issues.  Well they shot pretty good too :chuckle: this gone loves everything.  POI was a half minute low from my vld's.  Shot four shots a bit over half minute.  Then I stacked a 3 shot group in the same hole dead center with the vld's.  Cant decide if I wanna pack accubonds or my beloved bergers for the goats.  First world problems right!?!?!   :chuckle:

yes sir!  Cool thing about Kodiak is they project that it is at 100% capacity for the habitat.  You can buy two tags and it's any goat.  Michael has two tags.  I figured one is enough for me.

It's amazing how quick they figure you out. I think I believe more of my own bull than my wife does.

You can let her know I penciled my goat trip to Alaska out at around sixteen grand since I don't have any brothers up there so you're probably looking better than me, which is why you're going to Alaska and I'm still saving.   :chuckle:

Been a long week of two a day cardio, new carpet in the bedrooms, and day dreaming of goats, but managed to get a fat batch of venison spaghetti in the dehydrators tonight.  I like to do sauce and noodles together but meat separate.  Had much better luck with consistency and rehydration of the meat by dehydrating as a stand alone item.  Plus when the meat is solo you can bust up any pieces that are still too big before final packaging with the sauce and noodles.

Yes the meat looks weird.   I add breadcrumbs to it.  Allows water to penetrate into the meat better.  Cuts down on rehydration time immensly

no sir.  I have a high metabolism so that approach has never worked for me.  Only extra weight I want is in the form of leg and back muscle :chuckle:  my goal is always maximized lung capacity and muscles that can sustain long, vigorous activity.  I just pack a lot of calories and eat eat eat.  Those who have hunted with me can verify my advanced snacking skills :chuckle:

Today was a good day! Michael landed back on American soil this morning and by this evening he was re-united with his family! His son was only a month old when Michael deployed so he's got a lot of catching up to do :IBCOOL:

That's awesome! I couldn't imagine having to leave my one month old like that. It's amazing the sacrifices servicemen have to make. Tell your brother thank you for me. Glad he's home safe.

Hope you kill a stud! Is there a list of gear you have yet to buy or borrow? Just wondering if you need anything to make this dream a reality and if there is anyway I can help?

PM incoming shortly as well.

only thing I needed was a solid 4 season tent.  From early to late season hunts down here i run flourless shelters.  Mid to late season I take the stove.  Luckily a had multiple tent offers on here and chris (elkohalic)  hooked me up with a Hilleberg.  Besides that I have more gear than any human would ever possibly need.  I actually recently perged a couple totes worth of old stuff.  A guy can only have so many leaky sleeping pads and non functioning jetboils  :chuckle:

That sounds like a great trip Karl.  I spent three Winters and two Falls on the Westside of Kodiak between Shuyak to the North and Karluk to the South dragging for rock soul and cod.  Beautiful country that time of year.  The Shelikof Straits can be brutal and flights in and out can be hit or miss..   What a great opportunity for you and your Brother.  I hope you guys make the most of it and are successful.

Felt like such an idiot today.  Loaded a fresh 50 rounds and wanted to sneak out for a quick check on the rifle before I fly out friday.  Range was all snowed in so I gutted my range bag down to essentials only and post holes my way in.  Long story short I couldn't hit a thing.  So I head home, check mounts, grab the magneto and some tools and head back out.  As I'm inputting new temp in pressure in my calculator, I notice something off.  I had been shooting up some old loads last weekend and I had my calculator set for my 212gr eldx load and not the 185 bergers :bash:  I felt so freaking dumb! Once that was corrected and I dug the snow out a bit more, my old girl was spot on  :IBCOOL:  I shoot thousands of rounds a year but even then I guess a guy can make a rookie mistake  :chuckle:

extra virgin olive oil and some hot sauce is pretty good in tuna but that tuna in oil is not for me :chuckle:  that particular packet is going into a dinner entree so didnt want the oil stuff.  Normally I'd dehydrate the tuna for this purpose but I'll eat this meal first so I can nuke that weight right out of the gate.

25% of adult age bears do not hibernate on kodiak.  This year is a mild winter so more bears than normal are out.  Not gonna lie, it concerns me :chuckle: I am not a fan of the big bears.  An Island air pilot had some clients a few weeks ago that said they had a bear chasing goats around  :yike:

I'll be messaging Bullblaster nightly on the inreach for the following days weather report and I'll give him a short rundown if the days events.  I'm sure he'll report here what is going on.

You should bring 4 of the harbor freight driveway alert motion dingers. Then you can set a perimeter around your camp. :chuckle:
I've been flying up there and watched them coming out of their dens sliding on their butts doing what looked like 40mph down the hills to lose elevation for long distances. Funny to watch but makes you really realize how fast those things are.
You're going to have such a awesome time. One of the most beautiful places to hunt.
Take tons of pictures and video and have a blast.

In BC heavy griz country we slept with our .338's loaded next to us.  The unarmed guides in next tent laughed and said you won't have time for those if a griz wants in.  Very comforting.    Slept best when we had animals down as we knew the bears would be on the gut piles.

Well gear is rounded up, rifle is squared away, and food is good to go.  Few hours of work and then I'll be wheels up for Lakewood.  We will get gear packed up and ready to fly, I'm gonna get some uncle snuggles in with my little nephew then we will be on our way to kodiak.

Forecast looks wet.  Hopefully the fog is minimal and we can get on the mountain with little issue.

Just got an update. They located a solid billy and were close to getting into position but got snowed off the mountain. Karl said he hates alders.

He did not say it like that  :chuckle:
:chuckle: Huntwa is a family site.

Sounds like a rough night last night. Lots of snow accumulation and lots of condensation in the tent. Also the lake they flew in to is icing up. Hope the warmer and clear weather coming in melts it back out.

Kind of a no-brainer.

As of yesterday afternoon they were on 26 hours in the tent hunkered out of the wind and rain. I was also informed that Karl’s brother crapped on his boots.  :chuckle:

I’ve been saying all week that Tuesday is goat killing day because of weather. They sent this morning that they had found 3 Billy’s way up in some rocks.
They have 2 down.

Not sure what their plan is for trying to fill another tag but the weather gets crappy tomorrow.

The Blanchard boys can sure get things done!

A decent mature billy (~6.5 years old) will have ~100 lbs of boned meat and the hide and skull will go ~30+ depending on the skinning job and if the hair gets saturated.

Good luck to them

We communicated some last night regarding weather the next few days. Today looks like the worst day of the week yet but tomorrow and Friday look much better. They were deciding if they would stay and try to fill the other goat tag or call for pick up.

I haven’t heard anything yet today.

It's weird. We picked mine pretty clean and got about 40-50 pounds of meat off of it. My buddy who has been involved in at least 8 goat kills told me ahead of time it's weird how little meat they have on them. You're the first person I've heard say they have that much meat on them. Maybe the Alaskan ones are more meaty.
I'm sure that I could have packed all the meat and cape out myself if I didn't have a bunch of other stuff to carry. We caped mine out back to the rear hips for a wall pedestal....so not a full body cape.

Even if these suckers were 150 lb packing weight I wouldnt think the Blanchard’s would need a second trip. They may have even taken a durable dry bag to fill up and send down the mtn.

I can’t wait to hear the full story. They are hating life in the tent again today.  :chuckle:

I got 45 pounds off my Wyoming billy, picked clean.  He was only 3 1/2, they do get larger with age until the start to regress and lose muscle mass.  We estimated mine at 250 lbs, head, hide with feet, meat was a doable load with an external frame pack even with rifle and other gear.  Fortunately with 2 of us it was two very easy loads.

This was a post on another forum in 2009. SE AK goats.

Here is something interesting. I have seen 3 billys on the ground this year that were each 6 1/2 years old. Horn and body size respectively for the 3:

9 7/8" (50 7/8" B&C) and 73# meat (zero wastage)

9 7/8" (50 1/8" B&C) and 79# meat (most rib meat, base of neck and the top of both shoulders shot up and discarded)

9 3/8" and 103# meat (~6" of each backstrap, top of both shoulders and a little rib meat shot up and discarded plus we ate the remainder of one backstrap before weighing)

That is more than 30# of boned meat different from billys of the same age and in the same general area. I thought the biggest goat had much smaller horns until I realized how big his body was. Probably coincidence that the smallest goat had the biggest horns and vice-versa.

It took lots of technologie and bribery to get The Sitka pictures... the rest will have to wait for shiny head to get back and log in.

I ground up everything and turned most of it into pep sticks. I saved some backstraps and probably should have ground it all. Mine had a pretty strong gamie flavor which I happen to like.

OK........Now it all makes perfectly good sense.

These are NOT Mountain Goats.

These ARE Mounting Goats.

That explains why they inhabit the flatter, lower, elevations where the Sitka wearing folks frequent.

Obviously if these chaps were hunting the higher elevations they would be wearing Kuiu.

Some adventures are hard to put into words.  The joy, the sadness, discomfort, and satisfaction are all easily felt by the individual but hard for an outsider to absorb the same emotions.  This was one of those hunts.

I'll spare everyone the ramp up and travel portion of this story as it was semi live up until we climbed onto the cessna 206 and went skipping across the water on our way south.  Weather along the east coast was crap so we cut across the island and came down the west side.  This worked out well as we were able to look at some other spots we had researched.  We made a last minute decision to abort our plan to head to a salt water bay in the SE corner and we touched down on a big lake that was still open.  Cloud ceiling was low so we weren't able to look for goats on our flight in but with the traffic that the SE was still getting, this just seemed like a more peaceful place.  What we failed to calculate is this new spot put us right in the path of the pending weather front that was barreling our way.

The flight in was worth the price of admission, and we touched down in fine fashion.  As fast as we hit the water, our gear was kicked out, we got a serious warning that "if the lake starts to ice you boys gotta pop smoke or you'll have to walk out to the salt for a ride.", and our ride was skipping back across the water headed back to civilization.

80 air miles from the float plane docks, there we were standing on a gravel bar in the rain with nothing but 2 packs, 2 rifles, and a dry bag full of candy.  We scrambled up the brush line only to be greeted by alder tangles and what I assume is muskeg.  Everything looked and felt like a sponge. 2ft deep holes all over, hidden by the grass and most were waiting to snap knee's with every step.  We found a creek bed that had some solid ground and it was lower than bench we were on so it offered some wind protection.  It wasn't perfect but it was good enough as we were now getting pounded by the rain.  We pitched the Tipi, cut a big alder for a sturdy center pole and began to un-cluster our lives and assess what we had going on. We attempted fire but there was no useable wood.  We robbed the bottom of an old eagles nest for dryish sticks and were able to make enough heat to sorta dry rain gear a bit but it was labor intensive and we quickly realized that fire was not going to be a tool on this hunt.  In my mind this amplified the seriousness of everything.  Heat and getting dry is literally a life or death thing and our intended heat source wasnt an option anymore.  From hear on out we would have to rely on our synthetic layers and sleeping bags to dry gear and salvage body heat.

In Alaska you can't hunt on the same day as you fly, but you can sure as heck look!  We climbed up to the rim of the first basin above us to take a look at what we would be dealing with and holy snow!!!!  Not only deep but drifted.  We made the decision almost immediately that it wasn't safe, nor wise to try and navigate that country in the dark so we had a hard line on turn back time so we could be back at camp by dark.  It's not like we were looking for bucks and bulls moving at first and last light.  Goats don't roll that way so that switching hour wasn't an important thing to be around for.

On our way down we stopped to glass a big face and immediately picked up goats! It was a nanny and kid group! As we continued to glass we found a lone goat way down the mtn from them all by itself. Long ways off but looked to be a billy! Talk about excitement! I cannot accurately describe the feeling of spotting goats when you actually have a goat tag in your pocket!!!!  Gameplan was set for Sunday! Now we just needed them to stay put....

By the time we got back to camp, we were pretty much soaked head to toe.  The rain was really pounding away and the wind was intensifying. To compound everything the temps plummeted once the sun went down.  Drying clothes was gonna be vital and the only way to do that was with body heat in the sleeping bags.

First thing was to pull insoles and wet socks.  Those went in the sleeping bag.  Then new socks and boots back on.  The new socks soaked up excess water.  Once we were ready to climb in the bag, those socks went in as well.  If you have never climbed into a sleeping bag full of wet gloves, socks, an insoles, wearing  wet clothes...when its 28° out, you are missing out on one of the more unpleasant things in life  :chuckle:

Condensation was a big issue that first night and bags got a good soaking from inside and out but those kifaru slik bags were so impressive!  Bears hadn't been a thought that crossed my mind so far but when the lights got turned out and we were zipped up in our bags, every noise was a potential monster brown bear.  Luckily the wind and rain lulled us to sleep.

It was dark by 6:30pm and the sun didn't peak out again until 8:00 a.m.  Though everything in the tent was wet and frozen, including the outside of our bags, inside everything was warm and dry.  It was still raining hard but being down that long had us eager to get after it!  We flew out of the tent only to be greeted by a 500ft ceiling  :bash:   the thought of being stuck in the tent was more than we could bear. We knew that we had big weather coming and high winds thanks to Chris's daily weather reports so we made busy hauling large rocks from the beach to anchor tent Stakes. With the high winds I was very concerned about my big teepee. The design has limitations and the ground wasn't the best for staking so I wanted to get it good and anchored.

Around mid day the wind started to intensify and the cloud cover blew out enough that we decided to make a run at that potential Billy.  One of the things that I very much underestimated how much time it would take to get anywhere due to the Alders and Terrain. It was incredibly labor-intensive to get above the brush.  We finally made it to the area he had been but we took a bad route and got cliffed out.  It was pure nail biting navigation trying to get off those ice covered rocks and back on solid terrain.  We finally got circled and as we made our final approach our weather hit! Blinding snow blacked out everything.  Within a matter of minutes we had over an inch covering everything including us.  Now the game plan was get off the steep while we still could.  We fought our way back to camp and repeated our de-robing process.   The wind was screaming at this point and it was raining so hard that it sounded like someone had a pressure washer and they were trying to wash the tent.

At some point in the night it turned to snow and boy did it snow!!!! Flakes that were no guff the diameter of a pop can! Every 30 min we would have to go beat snow off the tents for fear of collapse.  Needless to say not much picture taking took place.  It was just survival.  Keep shelters functional and stay warm.  That's all that mattered.

At some point that morning the temp warmed up enough and the snow turned to rain (thank god). With it came with even more ferocious winds.  It sounded like a jet out on the lake and when those gusts came through they would hit the mountain and literally make a "boom" sound! Luckily our little creek bed was just low enough that we were out of the full force of the wind.  At one point I took my little wind meter out with me to take a leak and clocked 58mph.  Not sure what the gusts were or how hard it was 10 yards above us on the flat but it was concerning to say the least.

My tipi is a JonathanS work of art.  That thing got absolutely pounded but it held strong.  A true testament to the quality of his workmanship.  36hrs we spent hunkered in our bags just listening to mother nature unleash her fury.  The whole while all we could think about is where is this gonna move the goats too?

Early Tuesday morning mother nature stopped throwing her fit and the skies cleared.  With that the temp dropped hard.  When the sun finally cracked the horizon it was blue skies and 22° out.  Everything was frozen including the muskeg (thank god :chuckle:). We dawned puffy layers and blew out of the tent like two kids on Christmas morning! It felt glorious to be out of that tent and upright.  Immediately we glass up goats and they are on the peak right south of camp! We figured it was about 2 miles to get to them.  First we needed to get frozen rifles functional and get everything squared away in the packs.  We were gonna run light and fast.

A bit more coffee and some burn time to thaw the boots and we were beating feat to wrestle our way through the alders.

extremely unpleasant.  We slept in the Hilleberg.  We just used the teepee for gear storage.  It allowed us to keep our sleeping quarters less cluttered and a bit of air flow around the rain gear at night.  We also kept all the food in it.  Trees were a long walk so figured if a bear came around he'd mess with that and not us and give us a fighting chance to get on our feet and in an offensive position.  We figured out really quickly that they probably wouldnt be an issue.  On the salt I could a few scraping out a living but inland where we were there was nothing to eat.  We never saw any sign of big brown thank goodness.

With frozen muskeg and no rain top on, we were cranking out the paces on our way to the goats.  From two miles away we could see 3 nannies and 2 kids and then a separate group of 3 which we thought at the time were billies. The plan was pretty simple.  Run the alder tangles until we were below them and then start climbing until we got close enough to make a comfortable shot.  Up, up, and up we went.  We lost sight of our 3 goats for a while but as we peeled around a rock ledge they came into view. I took a range and the Leica told me 570 yards.  We crept closer another 20 yards until we had some contour to shoot off of as the slope was almost vertical.  We did the math, dialed for 440 yards.  Wind was gonna be a 2 minute hold left to right.  We settled in and began to size up our quarry.  This is where some mixed emotions set in.  I wanted a Billy, but more than that I wanted February hair so I wasnt apposed to killing a nanny especially since F&G urged us to use a tag or two on nannies as the goat population is over carrying capacity for the landscape.  At first glance I assumed we had a group of 3 billies.  They were away from the nanny/kid group, mine had a dirty rump spot, and moments before I shot I watched her stretch out just like a Billy looks when he takes a leak.  The horns and face told me otherwise though.  This was a group of 3 nannies.

Decision time.  Pass on these goats and continue our search or go for birds in hand?  Our lone low Billy from a few days before had disappeared, weather forecast was saying that realistically we would have one more good day of weather (boy did that hold true), and we had exhausted our huntable/glassable terrain within a 5 mile stretch.  We both agreed we wanted winter hair more than anything so we made peace with killing nannies and got ready for our shots.....

The goat Michael wanted was bedded so the plan was I would shoot first and then when his stood he would torch off a round.  Not naming names but someone forgot their bipod :bash: we had ditched our packs back by the rocks so I had to get creative with my rest.  I took off my bino harness off and propped it in the snow.  I tucked my forearm under my buttstock and settled in.  She took a big long stretch (exactly like a Billy takes a leak) and turns broadside.

At the shot I lost her momentarily from the recoil of the rifle, but as I came back into the scope I see a goat, upside down, falling through the air! Ok well I guess I made a good shot :chuckle: I get on Michael's goat right as he touches off and he rocked her through both shoulders! She fell down to the next ledge, tried to get up but Michael had another round on it's way in an incredibally short amount of time! She was dead right there. We had just doubled on freaking mountain goats :yike: :yike: :yike:

I continue to suck at pictures and video.  I took literally 6 pics on the hunt.  I did shoot a lot of little videos so I've been taking screen shots from those.  This was  a post kill vid where we were trying to point out the dead goats.  Epic fail :chuckle:

We soaked in the moment a bit, but there was work to be done and the clock was ticking down till dark.  We dropped back to our packs, strapped on the crampons and began our grind up to the goats.  We were about 50 yards into our ascent when Michael tells "heads up!" I look up to see a ball of white fur sliding 30mph right for us :yike: she goes screaming past us and with a swoosh she shoots off the ledge and into the alders far below.  Well that's one way to get them down the mountain.  We continue the climb up the shoot and finally get to my goat.  She is tangled in the alders above a ledge on an impossibly steep slope.  With no way to work on her there (or anywhere up there) we come to the conclusion that we gotta give her a kick and send her on the same path as Michael's.  "1...2...3...push!" She flips, slides 2ft and snags the next alder down :chuckle: well *censored* haha.  The next shove though and watch out! They ended up almost next to each other over 600 yards down the mountain from where they died.  We took some pics and some video and then got to work.

Since we now had bloody stuff, we decided we better get serious so we hung food, trash, meat, and hides in a tree grove about 400 yards from camp.  That evening was cold as hell but spirits were high! The coffee flowed freely, the food tasted extra good and we were smiles from ear to ear.  We toasted to Aaron and laughed about how much he would have complained about being wet and especially about being cold (he was cold blooded :chuckle:).

That night was a restless one.  For the first time since we had been there it was dead calm.  Every single sound was a bear following the smell of goat blood.  I would go from dead asleep to heart pounding wide awake at every rustle of brush or snort coming from the air bag next to me  :chuckle:  about 3 or 4 a.m. the rain started and the steady drum on the tent lulled me to sleep.

The next morning was a cold one again and light snow was falling.  Ceiling was sitting at about the 800ft line so no glassing for the morning.  We took a hard look at the extended forecast, our lack of goat options, and the fact that we had taken nannies from a breeding pool and decided to call for a ride and end our stay.  Turned out to be a dang good decision because as we would find out, we would have been weathered in most of the remainder of the week.

Our ride showed up mid day and as fast as we had been dropped off, we were loaded and skipping across the lake looking at the wall of water coming up the valley from the SE.  Just beat it!

The flight home was just as spectacular as the flight down.  Absolutely breathtaking country and the sizeand remoteness is hard to wrap your brain around.

Back on kodiak we paid our float plane balance and headed back for my uncles.  Everything got packed away wet so first order of business was unpacking, washing, and drying gear.  My poor uncles basement  :chuckle:  the next day was dedicated to meat cutting.  Steaks and roasts were cleaned up and vac sealed.  Trim was ground up and cut with a pork roast and made into a spicy Italian sausage.  Evwrything went in the freezer and with that all our chores were finished.  We had goat tacos for lunch and tenderloin and backstrap for dinner.  The next night we had some sitka blacktail (hands down the best meat you will ever eat) and endless crab :chuckle:

Saturday we drove the road system and saw the sites.  It was a beautiful sunny day.  We took the 10pm Ravn air flight out of kodiak and with a crappy 7hr layover in Anchorage we were headed back for washington.  It was a somber flight home.  I wasnt ready to come home.  Alaska was amazing and we are already planning our return trip. We aren't done with the mountain goats on Kodiak 8)

Nice story telling. Epic trip with the weather and lack of heat.  Amazing the goats slid so far; glad you and Michael didn't follow them down the same way!

I'm curious.  How long did the stalk take?

gosh I don't know if I'd even call it a stalk. They were a few miles away so it took a good bit to fight through all the alders to get to the chute we were going to use for our approach.  From there it took a bit to climb into rifle range.  We were probably overly cautious on our final approach but we had literally no clue how spooky they were going to be.  We had full concealment on our final approach.  When we got to our pre determined point we were well within rifle range.  Basically just walked right up to them.

Congrats and thanks for sharing!  Goat hunts are always an adventure!  Kodiak just sounds like heaven to me (except for the rain).

Could ya have gotten it done with your bow?

doubtful. Snow was pretty crusted and loud.
