Got two baits in today. The fun begins!! Good luck to everyone this season. :hello:
-
It looks bird proof for now! Good luck Fred!
-
Bait #2
-
 looks good except I think you need a lot more mess! Lots more goopy stuff all over and extra food scattered about. :tung:
-

The crows and ravens were so happy to see us back. They were circling and calling the whole time we were putting the baits in. :)
-
Next year I am painting my barrels to look like Minions. :)
-
Nice and good luck! I've heard they've been moving around up in your neck of the woods.
-
Why are you stuffing the holes full of branches. Is it to try to keep the small critters out or just make the bears work harder?

Crows and Ravens will hammer the baits. They do it anyways after the bears pull the sticks out, then daylight rolls in and they go to work. Sometime I'll have 30 crows on the bait, in and out of the barrel all day long. They get fat. :)

That’s a great idea! Kevin :chuckle:

Ravens are especially bad, they are the big time "camp robbers"! :chuckle:
-
Can’t wait to see the bears Fred! Hopefully you can get that big sucker you been after the last couple years!
Did you get any pictures yet? :chuckle:
-
:yeah:
cant wait to see what shows up on your cams (other than lots of birds)
-
336 photos before noon today. This is one of the biggest reasons I LOVE cellular trail cameras. If I had a regular trail camera my SD card would be full and my batteries would be dead before I went back and checked them.
-
The ravens definitely remember your barrel and location!
-
tagging along..the sticks in the barrel is a good idea
my buddy over in idaho hasnt had any bears on his baits yet, but lots of ravens!
-
There is a really nice big boar in this area that I would love to zip an arrow through. He's not the biggest bear in the area, but he is probably one of his offspring. But he drives me nuts every year. He will come in, take the sticks out and then proceed to scoop out all of my bait on the ground. He's emptied half to 3/4 of a barrel a couple of times each of the last two years. Then he just lays on the bait and chows down all night. But when he leaves in the night the next day the ravens have a field day!! :)
-
Watching this one. Really enjoy a thread that takes you from the beginning of the hunt process (research area, baits out), throughout the process (cam pics of everything that frequented the site), to the final and ultimate end state.... bear down!
-
Good Luck!!
-
Big tag!
-
So far sloooow. Normally I get a bear on bait anywhere from 7 to 10 days after I get a bait out. It's been 5 days so far. Got my first photo last night that was not a scheduled photo, got all excited, only to find a brown snowshoe hare on the photo. :)
-
Trying to figure out how to get them sticks out!!! :)
-
Tag. What trail cam you running? How spendy is it for the cellular service?

Tag. What trail cam you running? How spendy is it for the cellular service?
I'm currently running the Spartan No Glow. It cost me $5 a month for my Verizon plan and $3.50 for the website that lets me do updates from home. Be aware the old 3G cameras like this one will no longer send photos after 31 Dec this year once all 3G networks are shut down, do be careful on "really" good deals on cellular camreas right now. I would seriously look at and consider Spypoint cameras, that is what I am going to next. The Spartan cameras are around $460 to buy. Some of the new Spypoints are between $149 and $360.

Spypoints are really hit or miss. One is great, another is garbage. I have a couple friends who have experienced the same thing. Just a heads up!

Thanks, so far most of the reviews are good, TrailCameraPro is currently testing and writing up a review of the new Spypoint Micro. Fingers crossed it is a good one, since they are priced at $149.

Got another bait in tonight in a new area. I like this spot.

Well the crows are happy!! :chuckle:

That’s the best size!
Easier to carry out, less meat, and cheaper to have tanned up! Really a win win!

Man I miss bear baiting here in Wa, cool thread, thanks for posting! Can you get 2 bears in Idaho? If so, shoot that bugger!

Agree! fred could toss him over his shoulder and haul him out solo :chuckle:
I cant remember what move its off of but "cubs good eating" lol

There are certain areas where you can take a second bear, but not statewide. i'll post a side shot of this bear and most of you would change your mind. :) She's not as big as you think.
-
Are you going to chase them with your dogs or just sit on the bait?
-
Are you going to chase them with your dogs or just sit on the bait?
I'm unable to run dogs in this area. I have a couple of other spots I will run the dogs off the bait sites.

C'mon Fred you can run hounds anywhere! :chuckle: That looks like one of those tennis shoe bears that might only run 10-15 miles what could go wrong?

What an awesome post you got going this year can’t wait to see what happens
-
Tag!! Love this thread!!

Go get em Fred
-
Hey Fred, do you have any night photos from your Spartan? I have a Spypoint link-s cell cam and I'm really disappointed with the night photos.
-
had a decent little cinnamon bear come into the stand last night. didn't shoot it but i still cant stop thinking about how red he was. he may not get a pass next time he comes in. actions heating up a bit now.
-
Are you hunting these stands yet or just monitoring them hit the bait and refilling?
-
Things are finally starting to pick up.
-
A couple more
-
I knew he was going to come in tonight, but I could not get things done in time to get into the stand. Hopefully my partner sticks him tomorrow night.
-

So far we have not hunted the stands, but are about to start.

Keep in mind the photos they send are never as good as the ones on the SD Card.

If someone could invent a camera that doesn’t take 5000 pics of birds I will pay any amount of money for it. Sitting in my bait right now and have been deleting pics for about an hour sorting through them. Guess it helps pass the time but holy carp
-
Love the thread Machias, I'm so jealous.

I think you're onto something. They've got all that fancy face recognition stuff surely someone could make a program that identifies birds and bears and if it's only birds delete it. You could be a millionaire.
-
He came in early tonight. Only reason I didn't hunt tonight is I was concerned with the heat and living off grid I would have no way to take care of the meat until Monday. But tomorrow night if he comes in early, he's in trouble!!! :)
-
Very nice!👍🏻 Stick him🏹
-
He so full he's gotta take a nap. :chuckle:
-
Now your just rubbing it in! :chuckle:

:chuckle:
-
Big boy coming in!
-
Crawled into the stand last night at 4:30. Wind was perfect. Didn't make a sound. No bears. :)
-
Least I’m not the only one. Couldn’t have asked for better wind on my stand Saturday night. It’s like there sitting in front of there computers looking at there cellular trail cam on my tree stand.
-
:chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:
Maybe we've been hacked and they have the link!! LOL
-
I think they are just messing with me now. :)
-
Do you bate the same locations every year? How did you select the locations?
-
I do generally run baits in the same spots, they have shifted over the years as i find a little better set up in the same general area. I look for certain terrain features, I like a spot at the head of a big bowl that a south or southwest wind will blow the scent from my bait up into the bowl. Something near water if possible.
-
:o :o
Really!! :chuckle:
-
Every bear needs a mid day snack...then a nap.

He's really a fat boy!!

I'd like to request that You shoot that one.
What weapon are You using? Bow? Rifle? Smoke pole? Please say Smoke pole!

Great looking bear! Hoping you stick him👍🏻

I can take leave, and might for a couple of days. Looks like it is going to cool down and be a bit rainy so I might just take a couple of days off.

Does cool and rainy make them more active? I was thinking they wouldn’t be around as much. :dunno: I’m far from a bear expert tho.

They LOVE cool and drizzly. Heavy downpours and they will hang out in cover, but a little rain does not bother them near as much as it bothers us. I would prefer to hunt in much cooler temps as long the wind is from a steady direction.

im hoping it changes some patterns on my bait. i have an absolute tank hitting my bait about an hour after dark

This one is colored, a nice red hue.

SOOO fricken bummed. I have bear baited this same area since 2012. Taken or helped take 6 nice bears from this area. Looks like I am going to have to pull the baits, tree stands and cameras in the next couple of days. They are staging logging equipment just south of the baits. :'( :'( :'( It'll be years before it's any good, long after I am done hunting.
-
Bummer can you get in and try to get tubby before pulling out? Looks like a great bear.
-
Sure going to try!!

Won't be able to log the whole mountain, look close by for similar areas! Maybe ask the loggers for a unit map to figure out where the boundaries are.

It's a unique area, I have a couple of areas not too far away to move to, just these two spots have been very special and very productive.
-
Bummer for sure but It just opened up some opportunities to explore some new territory

Good luck hope ya smok’em

Yeah a bummer for sure. Hope you can pull that big boy out first before the trees come down!

No!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Fingers crossed you get him first.

Maybe try a 3d deer target as bait. Got home tonight to find a bear ate one of mine while i was at work. Middle of the damn day walked into my back yard and had his way with all my targets, but really only went to town on one of them.

:chuckle: Sorry, that’s just damn funny. Washington millennial bear taking the path of least resistance.

Went up to top up one of my baits on Saturday and found they have already started logging. So went in yesterday and moved one of my baits out of the logging area. Started off a bit rough, while pulling my cellular trail camera my foot slipped off one of the steps on my ladder stick and down I came, catching the top step with my stomach and hitting the ground nice and hard. I got a nice tennis ball sized rasberry on my stomach. Got the bait moved over to a new spot and bam got hammered hard the first night. Only bad thing about this spot is my cell coverage is spotty. I did not get any photos of the bear on the bait, just the aftermath. He hit sometime between midnight and 0500 this morning. The other bait that was getting hit every day has gone cold for the past 4 days. Not sure where he went.
-
That's not how I left it yesterday afternoon! :)
-
So after 4 days of no activity, had two nice bears on two different baits last night. Hopefully have at least one or both down by the end of this weekend.
-
Sounds like your on em. Good luck
-
My god they're fat!
-
That’s a good sign!
-
sorry you had to move but bear with it

:yeah:
Machias I hope your neighbors baiting in the same areas as you are feeding the bears something decent...so you aren't eating a nasty bear.
I'm thinking those bears are hitting multiple baits.

I heard the guys running the other baits around there are terrible at it and can’t even get bears on them. :chuckle:
-
:chuckle: :chuckle: Not true at all!!
-
I made an appointment with a regional office to check our bear(s) on Tuesday morning...they asked where the bears were now and I said alive and running around the mountains...then she hung up.
Good luck this weekend sir!!

Three new visitors yesterday.
-
Careful of that black one... it may have a tiny little rolley polley in tow. :chuckle:
Hope you guys can get them this weekend. Loggers are at it this week (a buddy can hear them from his house)

I'm starting to feel like Rodney Dangerfield. Looked at the weather and it was supposed to stop raining at 1730ish. Got up to my spot, harness on backpack on and ready to head in and my stabilizer will not screw into my bows insert. I work on and promptly strip the threads. SOB. Cant get it or my wrist sling on. Turn around and head home. Of course at 1914 there is a bear on the bait. Small one, wouldn't have shot it, but that's not the point!
-
Glad it was just the little guy that came in, that would have been a bummer to miss a good one.
-
-
cool video...thanks !

Very cool video. How far of a shot is that?
-
15 yards. She walked directly under my stand twice and looked up at me both times. Second time i thought she was getting a bit aggressive as she was foot stomping around the bottom of my treestand and sniffed my safety harness rope. :) Pulled the SD card on my camera and I have 7 different bears hitting this bait.
-
I understand there may be an update to the saga...
-
I saw some blood under his fingernails...

Probably just a bloody nose.

Well I did learn something new last night, probably should have already known it, but it's even harder to judge a bear in the last minutes of light. Sat through one heck of a thunder and lightning storm. I barely got a drop of rain, but the thunder was really rolling and the lightning was a tad scary sitting in a metal ladder stand 18 feet up!
At 2025, with just a few momments of shooting light left due to the cloudy conditions I saw a patch of dark hair through the trees moving towards the bait. As soon as it rounded the corner I thought it was the big boy who routinely empties half my barrel everytime he visits. The crows love him. The bear moved in and stood in front of the barrel and then stepped past the barrel perfectly broadside. Since my bow is out of action I was hunting with an open sight .30-.30. I put the front bead right behind the shoulder and squeezed off a shot. The bear took off and within 35 to 40 yards began a drawn out death moan which lasted about 20 seconds and then all was quiet. I waited a few more minutes and got down and found the bear piled up. No blood trail at all. It was NOT the bear I thought it was and was quite a bit smaller. Roughly 150ish dry sow. Fantastic coat on her, solid black. Got her skinned out and having some German sausage made and the hide tanned. Actually quite happy with getting this bear even though she was not exactly what I was after, BUT I have another tag so the quest for a big boy is still on!! :)
-
A little hairy at the 45 second mark. :)
pbjreload=10
-
Congrats!
I wouldn't feel bad, you are not the first nor will you be the last to misjudge a bear. On the bright side, it's another hide for the wall, meat in the freezer, and according to IDFG there are too many bear, so you did everyone a favor!
-
Good bear,happens to us all.
-
Nice shot! Just warming ya up for when that big bear comes in
Nice bear should be a good eater

Way to go!!! Love the really black ones.

Nice work! Even more impressed you rode that Thunder out in the stand, it was booming!!
-
Atta boy!!
-
Congrats. I’m sure she will taste much better than that fat old boar anyways.
-
Nice bear Fred ! Get another now!!
-
Great bear!
-
Nice job ! I also shot the wrong bear last Wednesday :chuckle: it definitely happens. Hope you get a big one on the second tag I will be doing the same hopefully. The frosting has been a great addition btw.
-
Glad to hear it, have you found that they like the icing or the frosting better? I think they seem to like the icing a little better. :)
-
I would say frosting in my area. The frosting appears to be crack cocaine for bears on my bait :chuckle: I am hoping my boy shoots the big guy we are feeding so probably better I shot a smaller one. I am still going to hunt a little for a big bear need to get the hounds some exercise. Your bears hide looks great!
-
Talk about misjudge LOL, just got back from Oregon spring hunt and did this video. Had a blast though and feel fortunate to harvest one in this type of country.
-
Nice video!! Thanks for sharing it. Beautiful coat on that bear! Congrats!
-
Awesome bears! The thunder was intense. Had some real good fall elk hunts just like that minus the bait barrel.
-
He's growing a bit.
Still have one little blonde bear coming in regularly.
-
Christopher Robbins? You in there? :) I believe I actually got a photo of Pooh
-
That is awesome!! I'm gonna have to show my daughter!!

Three bears on the bait last night.

Seems those elk have a sweet tooth!! Nice pics

Check out this crew working the barrel over. Really nice sow that throws some pretty bears!!!
-
Are you able to get your 4 wheeler to your bait sites to keep them full and how often do you have to fill it up?
Sent from my SM-G935V using Tapatalk
-
I can get within 75 yards on one and about 60 yards from the other. Generally I can fill them up twice a week and I am good to go. That is one of the nice things about a cellular camera, I don't have to guess on whether I need to go in and top the baits up or not, I can judge it on the amount of activity I have on camera.
-
Dam that's a mob of bears...great pics
