Title: Grouse..It's G-R-O-U-S-E- Countdown has begun!
Post by: Dave Workman on June 11, 2019, 06:29:13 PM
June 11.  Less than three months to go.

Counting down the weeks....the days...the hours!

Time for me to get out scouting.  I see others are already at it.  Fanatics

I'll have to find a couple of new areas this year. One of my favorite haunts has been discovered by a few other people and last year turned rather disappointing.

May have to spend some time in northern Chelan and Okanogan counties. And I may have to get back up to Government Meadows this year.

My goal this is year is MORE GROUSE HUNTING!  Count me in, regardless of the draws, I want to spend more time in the hills chasing grouse this fall.

Ahem, well...having been accused by my many critics of being a low form of humanity unfit to be in polite company anywhere but my funeral...I'd say that isn't much of a challenge!  :chuckle:

So, why stay low? I've hunted that ridge between Lake Chelan and Okanogan County and found blue grouse on the north slope heading down toward the Methow in the past. As you know, I always "bet on the blues!"

#1 look at the harvest rates in different GMUs around you
#2 pick one thats got the highest harvest rate near you
#3 read the rules/hunting hours on grouse hunting and study what they look like in the area you are hunting(spruce, ruff and blue)
#4 drive slow on dirt/gravel roads at legal time super early, drive slow and look for them in the road they will look like a road runner profile. They use the gravel to break down their food
#5 if you do see one get out of your truck(don't close the door if it stays still in the road) and shoot it.If it runs off the road close the door and move your truck off the road and chase that bird! often they will either be right under a spruce just off the road and if they're not listen for them moving. If you can't find them in the road in the morning take a walk in the woods on either small roads that can't be driven or on trails, go slow and stop every 30secs and listen for them moving. also look for areas with water and green under growth.
#6 when you shoot one step on the wings, grab the feet and slowly pull up all of the inners should come out. find the joint on both sides of the wings and twist it till it comes off(or use a multitool or knife if you need) then rip the breast feathers/skin off the breast meat.
#7 go home take the breast off the bone and make grouse nuggets
#8 enjoy.

Wow thank you for that response! I live in Tacoma, (and forgive me for not doing this legwork right now, I am travelling and only have my phone) but is grouse mostly the eastern half of the state? How far would I need to drive to get to a decent harvest rate gmu?

Bobcats right it's county not gmu that's my bad. These maps should help in terms of what kind of grouse you are going to be hunting based on location. For county info around you this is from 2017

Gray Harbor:2,300
Pierce:1,500
Skagit:1,900
Lewis:1,900
Mason:1,800

Now the top location in the state are
Stevens:7,300
Ferry 5,600
Yakima at 2,500

the rest are below 2k and most are around 1,000 and change to give you an idea. So you're in a good area

Map 1: Ruff
Map2: Spruce
Map 3: Dusky
Map 4: Sooty

The state calls grouse harvest something like "Take em where they are".  Of course maintained roads are off-limits naturally, but grouse don't often feed on pavement.

Not trying to stir the pot—actually looking for clarification. My understanding was that open Forrest service roads were off limits. I.e. if it has a name or number you can’t shoot from or across it with a firearm.

Private or logging company roads (that you’re otherwise free to access) are generally fair game.

Again, I may be totally wrong about that and don’t have any reasoning for my assumptions. Here to be educated.

The language in the regs is a bit weird.

https://wdfw.wa.gov/sites/default/files/publications/02063/2019-2020%20Big%20Game%20Hunting%20Pamphlet.pdf

On pp. 91 and 92, they make it very clear that you can't shoot a bow or a crossbow "from a vehicle or from, across or along the maintained portion of a public highway".

But when it comes to firearms, on p. 93, the regulation adds the critical word "negligently":

Quote
7. Negligently discharging a firearm (RCW 77.15.460) from, across, or along the maintained portion of any public highway, regardless of surface, or from within a moving vehicle or moving off-road vehicle is prohibited.

That word "negligently" seems (a) quite appropriate, but also (b) a pretty big loophole.

Yeah, I am a little confused by the regs and statutes.  From the fish and game pamphlet, it appears as though there are more stringent rules about shooting a bow on from a road than a gun from a road.  Can shoot a gun as long as you're out of the car and not negligent?  But can't shoot a bow at all from the road?

The pamphlet cites RCW 77.15.460 in a deceptive way--highlighting "negligently discharging a firearm" and then adding the cite to the statute mid-sentence to make it seem as though that is the title and the text after the cite is the meat of the statute.  The actual statute just says "A person is guilty of unlawful use of a loaded firearm if... [t]he person negligently discharges a firearm from, across, or along the maintained portion of a public highway..."

There is no cite to the rule prohibiting shooting a bow from the road.  Therefore, I don't know what rule WDFW is relying on for that.  I think it should be published in either the WAC or be codified in the RCW but I couldn't find anything after a quick look.  Perhaps a call to WDFW is in order.

On closer inspection, here's the actual rule on archery:  https://apps.leg.wa.gov/wac/default.aspx?cite=220-414-070

Clearly can't shoot from the maintained portion of a public highway.  According to the RCW, "highway" = "Every way, lane, road, street, boulevard, and every way or place in the state of Washington open as a matter of right to public vehicular travel both inside and outside the limits of incorporated cities and towns"

WDFW pamphlet defines "public highway" as "Any road, regardless of surface, maintained by public funds."  Again, no actual cite to a rule, though.

Regardless of which definition you use, no archery from a public road.  Under the WDFW rule, theoretically you couldn't even shoot a bow off a gated closed road.

I certainly would not discharge a firearm on or across a public road. Seems like a good way to get in trouble. Also I never hunt from a vehicle as that seems to defeat the purpose. Especially for grouse. I usually just take the shorty for a walk and explore.

I've followed more grouse off the road than I can count...or remember. Got most of the suckers, too!

Old skid roads, "decommissioned" roads seem to be fair game.   It's been a few years ago, but I did a piece on this subject and contacted game agencies all over the West.  If it's a road in use (i.e., there's regular traffic), the concensus was you've got to be off the "travel portion" of the roadway, paved or gravel didn't seem to make a difference. Forest service roads are public and they are maintained in the legal sense, AFAIK, because they get a blade once or twice a year an the taxpayers pay for that, so I make a habit of not launching a bullet or a shot charge.  Once I'm off the travel portion, fool hens are in trouble!

NOW... all that said... we're in the time when broods should be showing up pretty good.

I do however always look forward to your annual grouse topic, as chasing high country blues is near the top of my list.

As I get older, I don't chase them quite so fast,  ;) but your kind remark is appreciated. Blue grouse have given me countless hours, even days, of great enjoyment outdoors and at the dinner table.
I once popped two boomers on the same old dusty 4x4 track up in Okanogan County more than two decades ago, while looking for a camp spot off the main road, up some creek whose name I cannot recall. This "road" was little more than an ATV trail, dust inches thick, just beat to hell, with seedlings growing up the middle, and here was this knucklehead grouse badooping along to get out of my way on a Friday afternoon before the deer opener. He didn't even try to fly, but up the hill he went figuring to outrun this human bonehead, heading into some young pines. Nailed him.  About 30-45 minutes later, his twin brother was trotting along the exact same route as I was retracing my path. Into the cooler he went as well.

That was when I fully appreciated just how stupid some of these fool hens can get.  I'm not a big walking tree, after all. Trees are smarter, especially the walking ones.  :chuckle:

This will be my first year out for grouse. I checked out a few spots that looked promising this past weekend. One of the spots was 100 acres of public land, fairly young regrowth, one meadow, and a road bisecting it. This made me wonder about grouse hunting etiquette and hopefully you guys can help. With Archery deer season opening on Sept 1 and this spot looking like it would be ideal to hunt deer on, what do you do as grouse hunters in an area like this? Say it's public land and just charge in with a dog? I'd rather not get into any conflicts with folks because I ruined their hunt.

I was out scouting last week with a buddy and he walked into a grouse that was dragging her wing. She'd obviously been wounded somehow. I was considering putting her out of her misery as she kept hopping along like that. Then she flew up in a tree. She'd been luring us away from her nest. It was very cool to see this in real life. Another, later in the day, did the same routine. Fascinating, nature is.

I definitely try to avoid people if I can. But if you are there first and the archery hunter comes in and spooks all your grouse who is ruining whose hunt?? I stay clear of any spots that look like someone might be hunting it. Other than that it’s public land and you have a right to be there as well

It is now July 16. Just over 6 weeks to go.
We must vanquish these thunder-chickens and fool hens from our midst, and return good dining to the realm!

Breast out a grouse, sprinkle it with seasoning and lightly brown.
Prepare angel hair pasta and your favorite sauce.
Warm/bake them together and add parmesan.
French bread.

I've got a spot near Leavenworth that had a lot of birds last year, but I was new and ill-prepared and they beat me. I purchased a property in the Okanogan next to national forest, and found a few there. But a couple weeks ago, I got a real treat.

I recently had a driveway cut and a spot leveled and graveled over so I could actually get onto the property after the rain, and avoid the Mr Toads Wild Ride I had been doing up to that point. We were camped there to see the meteor shower (got rain instead) and my 6-year-old daughter yells out "ducks!". We mostly ignored this until she yelled out again "more ducks!". Sure enough, there were several grouse (think they are dusky, longer neck and beak) crossing my new road. The grass is nearly 3 feet high, so I decided to walk around to see if there were more and spooked 9 of them. Saw them again the next morning eating the currants. I have 0 excuse to not get a grouse this year.  :)

I came home two nights ago and saw what I thought was a bobcat or a racoon slipping over the patio wall.  I left my headlights on and quietly slipped towards the patio.  Sneaky sneaky.  Not ten feet away as i came around the corner was a fat grouse just looking at me. It did that grouse thing, blasted over the wall and scared the daylights outta me.  Should be a good season hahaha!

Well we woke up on time, had an incident with the dog bringing a LIVE MOUSE INTO THE HOUSE AND DROPPING IT so when we finally got in the truck it was like 9-9:30 and we had to stop to get a coffee in town because happy wife/girlfriend happy life. But we still found a nice patch of aspens(girlfriends choice to check it out) and in 10 minutes had 2 grouse down and left the other 6 as they looked pretty young. Our 2 year old dog did great on the retrieve, the other pup nearly swallowed the grouse whole. He is only 6 months old and of who knows what breeds.

Went with a buddy today,No grouse but went up a dead end road turned around and came back down and a 7' diameter old growth fir fell across the road. No cell service but someone came up the road shortly after and went and called darrington fire dept. since the forest service guys are gone in alaska fighting fires. Those two guys cutting and us to moving it out of the way took 4-1/2 hours from when we started.Amazing how much wood there is in one of those. We only cut a slot to drive through.
Thanks again to the darringtonfire dept. We would have been sleeping out there tonight otherwise.

Yes I picked up the breastless grouse that were in the stream below the pool where people collect water. Evidently they started pulling feathers on some as they were all over then decided to just cut the breasts off. Plus from what I understand you are required to keep the wings on until arriving at home at least I do. That way ifstopped the wdfw can tell the sex and species.

Animal "poop" isn't associated with hunters, but grouse carcasses are. And game birds must have a head or wing attached for identification purposes. This is just as bad as lake fishermen who clean fish at boat ramps and dump guts into shallow water.

Just got back from an unsuccessful archery elk hunt in 560. Any suggestions on decent areas in the I-90 or Hwy-2 corridors (west side) for grouse? Ideally FS roads but not sure where to start.

Stay away from the main, big FS logging roads and hunt the smaller roads off those ones. Think skidder roads and roads that are more overgrown that one vehicle can fit down at a time. I like mid morning and mid afternoon better than first and last light for grouse.

Thanks, I’ll head out Wednesday morning and see how it pans out!

Walked a road this morning that has produced birds in the past.  Found 2 but was only able to get 1 of them. First kill for my new mossberg SA-20.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190917/dccaae9bc079eea1824408ed2d23b9bb.jpg)

After several "losses" this September and 2 more on Saturday and 1 Sunday (after a chase), I managed one on Monday morning.  FINALLY.  Was really feeling that this season was cursed.

Not to worry. Lots of us have had the same experience.
Good job!

Anyone still hunting grouse in central Washington this time of year? If so, what elevation are you finding them? What tactics do you suggest in the snow?

Mark they are still out there and for the most part do not migrate. They are a little harder to find as they hold in place a bit more unless more affected by Coyotes and hawks.

Went for deer/elk and instead got this guy with my bow. Love these little birds!
