Title: So, you think you can shoot?
Post by: Alchase on June 24, 2019, 06:25:03 PM
I know there are some seriously good shooters on this site.

Granulations to Sergeant Benjamin Cleland of Swanton, Ohio, pulled off the feat at the National Rifle Association’s 2019 Charlie Smart Memorial Regional in Oak Ridge, Tennessee on June 2, something that has never been recorded as on a service rifle in this type of match, with a score of 800-34x. This means Cleland not only notched 80 back-to-back hits in the 10-ring but that 34 of those nailed the even smaller “X” ring at the target’s dead center. For reference, at 600 yards, the 10-ring measures 12 inches while the “X” is 6 inches. The 80-shot course is fired in four stages.
This begins by firing 20 rounds from 200 yards in a standing position, followed by 20 sitting/kneeling, rapid-fire rounds before delivering 20 rounds from a prone position at 300 yards. The final stage, at 600 yards, consists of a further 20 rounds. A perfect score is 800, or 10 points for each round in the 10 ring.

The previous high score with a service rifle was a 798 set by Marine Gunnery Sgt. Julia L. Watson.

Service rifles in the match are limited to M16s, M14s and M1 Garands with a maximum of a 4.5x power

I'm not impressed; my pawnshop SKS can do that all day long with steel cased ammo. I'd prove it to everyone but they won't let me shoot it in the service rifle category for High Power matches.  :chuckle:

That might be because the SKS was a service rifle in the Korean war (1950s ish).
It is to bad that they would not allow such a precision $200 a $150 rustic firearm in the competition. I bet if you wore sandals made from tires and coolie hat, they would have relented.  :dunno:
But if they did, they would also have to issue body armor to all the spectators in case of KABOOMS!

Small price to pay for such a historical piece of..............pot metal and wood.

4.5x at 600 yards, I couldn't make out the broad side of a barn.  Good for him.

Most guys I know that send a lot of rounds down range aren’t at all caught up in the speed game.

Personally I need lots of speed and lots of energy down range so I can spot impacts through my crummy glass :chuckle:

The internet speeds are always much faster than real life. And you have to state that there’s zero pressure signs too.  :chuckle: then complain that the brass sucks.

Anymore I try and find a good recoil node and keep
If there.

I like to run my stuff hot enough that I can keep count of firings by looking at the head stamp :chuckle: as long as I stay within a realistic recoil node of course.
