Good chance the owner got beat to his dogs. It's a common problem, hounds are like Olympic runners, they are skinny when in good condition and the average person happens along and thinks the dogs are starving and lost, so they pick them up and transport them out of the area before the owner can get to them to pick them up.

There could have been a split race and the owner was at a treed bear or rounding up his other dogs, or these dogs got split apart from other dogs for any of several reasons, these are all very common things that can happen when hunting dogs. So the dogs find a road looking for their owner and before he can get there someone picks them up. In the photo they don't look in bad condition to me. But at this point the owner needs to know where his dogs went so he can go get them. Hopefully everyone with contacts in Idaho will spread the word.

the post said the garmin GPS collars had dead batteries, how long do they typically last?

Depending on the setting 24-72 hours, idaho has a lot of repeat names but if this is the fish creek off highway 12 they either ended up there by accident or the guy is a complete idiot.  More wolves then you can shake a stick at and no roads.

Lots of IEP lands near CDA. If the owner didn't recharge before hunting the batteries might not have lasted very long, hard to second guess the situation?  :dunno:

def hard to 2nd guess so I don't

thought I matched up those dogs with another lost hounds post from back in may also with dead GPS collars, turns out they were different hounds and those ones got back to the owners.

hope these ones get back to their owners too, and hopefully the owners gets some ID tags with phone numbers on it.

I've had an ID tag pop off the ring on my dogs collar while hunting.  I double up now.  With a "plate ID" that slides over the collar (harder to get that one off), and another ID on the ring on the collar.   As well as chipped and ear tattoo as well.

Hopefully these dogs make it back to their owner.

Odd that neither dog had ID tags? You would think since they had garmin collars that they would have ID tags?

That's what I thought too.  I shared it with a few buddies in that area.

We stopped putting ID tags on our bird dogs collars.  I've never had them survive more than 1-2 hunts and I got tired of replacing them.

Get your collars/tags from a hound hunting supply, the name tags rivet to your collars (that will last). Tags usually outlast the collars, I sometimes drill out the rivets to put tags on new collars that don't have a tag.

These come with tags:

The guy updated the thread on Facebook. The hounds are not chipped. Nobody has claimed them and they’re at a shelter.

Thats Fish creek  in north Idaho by Twin and spirit lake I am pretty sure-its got a bunch of IEP land. Bear season been closed up there for 3 weeks  :chuckle:  Maybe they were running raccoons. Either way I will put the word out I used to hunt that area quite a bit. I think the dogs look to be in pretty good shape. Doubtfull they been out too long who knows.

That fish creek is in unit 2 and there's no training season there either. Hard to believe the dogs wouldn't have walked clear out of there since season closed three weeks ago?  :dunno:

First step would probably getting out behind yours though  ;) but if they come pre-trained and fully equipped it sure makes the pitch a lot easier to sell!

Hopefully they find their home.  We would always leave one of our shirts or jackets where we turned them out if they got lost or split up on a race.  Many times we would find them laying on the shirt or jacket in the morning

Can you put new batteries in their collars or recharge them? maybe the owner could track them then? I know its been a while but is it worth a shot?

They are rechargeable, but the distance is limited, best case 7 to 9 miles in perfect conditions.  Would be very unlikely.

Ill probably get flamed again but guy may likely be pissed someone took property that was not theirs.  As he has been waiting on his dogs to return for a week and now has to pay pound fees.

I'm sure there is more to the story, but at this point all I know is the owner showed up and claimed the dogs.  I will for sure post any updates if I can find out.

Well intentioned people grab hounds a lot back in the telemetry days we had lots of dogs get free rides back to town  :chuckle: and we were usually still up in the woods hunting for the dogs. It’s part of the game but happens way less with the gps collars. I think I know those dogs and owner gave them away free because he had to get out of hounds. New owner is probably new to hounds which explains tracking collars but no nameplate collars. Could be different dogs though.

You seem to jump in a lot with people trying to do the right thing and call them thieves these dogs were in wolf country and I would have done the same! you did the same thing to me in lost and found for trying to return a fishing pole to a young man that would have been taken by the next person there after I left with no knowledge of how it got got there, at least i am trying to get it back to the rightful owner as are the finders of the dogs.I almost signed off for good after your negative comment but stayed only to see this, now I am officially done with Hunt Washington and all the negativity and internet policing.Don't matter any anyhow I was just a lurker mostly but learned more about the great out doors here than any magazine or other website I will miss coming here every evening to wind down and see peoples success  stories but the negativity on here is a downer! It is a shame how there is always a negative comment in every post started. Bye !!!!!!!

If you find hounds running down the road either leave them alone or if you have to do something and think they have been out a long time tie them to a tree or something(if it’s a main road)and call phone numbers on collar let owner know what mile marker etc they are at. Some guys don’t even like that when there’s wolves around but I have appreciated it because I will usually be up there somewhere looking and it made for quick retrieval.Bringing to town and feeding them a bunch of pizza cause you think they are starving should be your last choice   :chuckle::chuckle: This was a situation where it made perfect sense to bring dogs to town the trackers were dead and they had no contact information. This owner should be happy with what happened here even if it cost some pound fees. Plus they posted all over Facebook.  I am pretty sure it was the dogs I know and new guy got for free and might not have much experience which explains a lot.

 :yeah: x3

The most annoying thing was when people pick up your dogs and haul them two or three hours away to their home before calling! :bash:
But, I agree , it rarely happens with the gps collars, they are a huge improvement for not losing your dogs. I just wished the batteries would last longer than they do. I'm a firm believer that the gps collars save many dogs from being eaten by wolves.
