Title: Hunting around Cheney
Post by: Capt.Kyle97 on September 18, 2019, 11:49:46 AM
I just moved to Cheney WA, for school from the west side of the state. I have only hunted eastern WA a few times in my life so I was just wondering if there was any spots close to Cheney that I could hunt after or before class, I don't have a boat but I am not afraid to walk far distances. I have about a week before classes start and was hoping to use this time to scout a few places. I have looked at the wdfw feel free to hunt and reserve to hunt areas with no luck. Any help would be much appreciated.

I went to the Harvard of Spokane Co as well, but a long time ago.  Lots of pothole ponds around Fishtrap which is BLM.  They get pounded but weekdays on a school schedule you might have a couple of flyers.

There was a farmer off of Betz road that used to let college kids hunt as long as you picked up your beer cans

Give it a few weeks and a hookup with a local student.

Thanks for the info, I downloaded the BLM map and am going to go check it out in the next few days.

Fishtrap is kind of a cluster anymore. They opened it up to target shooting so that has most of the birds moved off a lot of property. I did notice they closed some of it so maybe that will help? Walk in spots are hard to find around Cheney. Most people use boats to hunt the local lake. I don't know if the Adventure Club still rents out equipment but maybe you can get a kayak from them in the early season. There are some geese around too so if you have a couple full bodies you might be able to find a couple. Hopefully you get in a dorm that a couple other guys like to waterfowl hunt also and you can make a couple trips to the pot holes each year. You're young so camping in cold weather shouldn't be a problem haha. Good luck and Go Eags!

I went to fish trap the other day and walked back to those very back ponds it was lime 1.5 miles, I was wondering if those would be worth hunting at all. I have a pontoon float tube boat, and am working on getting a kayak right now, I probably wont have it till the end of October though. I have also thought about buying some geese decoys but wasn't sure if I would be able to get access to fields around here. Thanks for the information, I'll keep scouting.

I went to school there but that was a while ago. Duck hunting is pretty thin. The annoying thing was the ducks really come through there in the spring but not a lot in the fall. West medical lake has a few ducks. I think you can hunt the entire west side of it. Amber lake has a little chunk on the east end. I think we almost shot a duck there once. We did shoot a bunch of geese around there. Didn’t take a lot of decoys either. That might be your best bet. Or just bank away your free time and gas money for turkey season. There are some turkeys close to Cheney, around spokane and also you can buy Idaho tags.

Hey guys just wanted to give a little update and thank everyone who gave me info, I actually didn't do too bad opening day. I woke up at 4am and realized I neglected to get my duck stamp so long story short I didn't get hunting until around 12. I went to one of the spots recommend by you guys, put a few miles on the boots and ended up with 4 teal and lost a mallard that I jump shot on the way out.

Nice job!  A Zips cup and some White Flyers in the back of a truck bed.  I miss those days.  Stay in school as long as possible because being a functioning member of society sucks :chuckle:  If that was my picture 25 years ago there would have been a bunch of Rainier Ice cans in the bed too.
