I am new to this forum but got drawn for a moose in the Selkirk area and hoping someone out there might have a little info to share. I have been there multiple times now and have a good idea of places to check out, but maybe someone has thought of something i haven't. thanks in advance

Welcome to the Forum Rooster. If I lived over there and knew something I'd be all over helping out, but sadly, I don't. 😁 I'm sure someone knows a thing or two though.
-
thanks buddy for telling me about this forum. That is enough. appreciate it.

Cow or bull?
There are no antlerless permits for selkirk, only bull permits. As it should be in all the other units.
-
I've heard around the Skookum lakes area, their are moose to be found.
East of Usk, up the hill are several areas worth checking out.
-
I’ve been up scouting several times, only seen one small bull. You should call the bio for the area, she has ideas of where to look. Our hunt starts in less than 2 weeks, I’ve been told the bulls will be showing themselves very soon. Are you looking for only big bulls or just any bull?

I already traded all my good Intel to trophyhunt for a backstrap...but if u add in a front shoulder I would be inclined to cheat on him..

Hey, come on its a big area. just a little info can't hurt. :)
And i would like a big bull (of course) but i'm taking my 9 year old son with me so he will be hounding me to shoot the first thing we see for sure. I don't think i can contain the little feller.

Trophyhunt, i don't know if i even qualify as a rookie, this is my first post ever... on any forum
-
:chuckle: you have to start somewhere!! Be aware that grizzly bears are in the unit, mostly by Sullivan lake and north. Talked to a forest service guy at the base of molybenonite ( how ever it’s spelled) just a couple weeks ago and he said bear griz bear activity was active in the area. If you get a moose down, keep your head on a swivel.
-
Good luck to you both! I’m jealous

Went farther south than I have before saw a ton of moose crap but no moose. Is it too late in the rut to be calling?

Nothing again. Going back in a couple weeks because of this work crap. But got hopefully 10-12 days of hunting. If I can’t get that done I’m eating this tag.
-
What? Quit your job instead!
All joking aside I think you will be able to get it done. Leaves are falling and should make spotting them easier

When does your season end and when will you be over there?
-
Ends nov 30th
-
I’m going to do some shift trades and some wheeling dealing so I’ll get back over there on the 6th and hunt until the 19th. If I can’t get it done in that amount of time it wasn’t meant to be.

Ok story time... My third and final trip. the first morning out hunting again i drove up to where i had seen a lot of moose sign on my previous trip. Drove up to the top of the hill and glassed the area for awhile, didn't see any new sign so i started back down the road. Had reception so i called the wife and talked with the kids before they headed off to school. started driving again and looked to the left and HOLY CRAP there's a moose right there running into the woods like his butt was on fire. I through the truck in park and grabbed my gun and headed off after him.. Gone. Like a ghost.. I ran back to my truck know there is another road that goes to the way he was headed. So i race down that road and drive past a trail and just happen to glance down it and locked up the brakes. what the heck was that, through it in reverse and stopped so i could see down the way. MOOSE. There he was. Shocked i saw him again, grabbed my gun again and pulled up on him. Can't see the vitals, took a couple steps closer and he took off to my right into some thick timber. i went up to where I saw him last and started looking around and heard stomping to my left. So i went left to see hooves stomping through the trees. he was up on this little side hill maybe sixty yards. pulled up my gun, couldn't see his body at all at this point. All i could do was watch his hooves run away for about 2 seconds. Went back to my truck wondering if that was going to be my only opportunity at him and went back to the place i first saw him sense he was headed that way. got out of my truck there and listened for a second looked around for about 15-20 minutes. Nothing. Went back to where I last saw him and in desperation i started calling. i could hear sticks breaking and something moving in woods. So i was hopeful, after sitting there calling a little and listening the sound died off and i couldn't hear anything any more, after an hour i decided to go back to where i first saw. so I got back in my truck and drove over there and low and behold a MOOSE, 2 Moose. Holy crap there multiplying. Got out of the truck, grabbed my gun, this time they were both standing in the trees about 50 yards in. So i ran in about ten yards to get a more open shot at the bigger of the two and he started running straight away from me. I started thinking NO he's going to disappear again. So i gave him a moose call and he stopped and turned broadside, put the cross hairs right on the motor room and squeezed the trigger. He took off. The other bull at this point ran off to my right and i never saw him again. Now to find my bull. i started walking in the woods at where i shot him at to see if i can pick up a blood trail and i think I walked a little to far and something catches my eye. There's a moose 20 yards away with his head completely behind a tree. I pulled up my gun looked through the scope but couldn't see his head, not being a 100% sure that's him i took a couple steps to try and see his head and he took off again. this time i knew it was my bull by the antlers and he was running lame from my first shot. I ended up getting another shot in him before i lost site of him. So then I waited, knowing i got two good shots in i was pretty confident he was going out. I started walking down a trail and saw blood and broken limbs on the ground and looked up and 20 feet away from there he lays looking around and gasping for breath, put my cross hairs on his neck and lights out. got back to my truck and texted a local biologist which i am not going to use his name but can't thank him enough. He came out and helped my get it out and back to my truck with his four wheeler that has tracks (my wife is going to be pissed at me when i buy one of those) and load it whole in the back of my truck and then took me down the road and we used a tractor to lift it out and skinned it out and cut it up right there.. Pretty awesome those guys were so willing to help. Sorry for the length of this but hope you enjoyed it.
-
guess who's excited that he gets the mount in his room
-
Nice job!
-
Too bad you didn't kill him before he multiplied. You'd of had twice as much meat! Great job Moose Man Mike!
-
Congrats and thanks for sharing the hunt with us
-
If you don't mind me asking what area did you kill him in I was hunting there the first week of November and we got a bull about that size.
-
I was on 128 just off kings lake road. Down by usk. Where were you and I would like to see pics.
