Title: The Search for a Factory Production Magnum Rifle
Post by: JJB11B on September 19, 2019, 07:55:57 AM
I am looking at getting a big magnum gun. Mainly just cuz I want one. I have a plethora of small to average rifles. I have most popular guns between .22LR to .308 and 30-06. I am currently looking at getting a Browning X-Bolt Hell's Canyon Speed Long Range McMillan. I am looking for at either 28 Nosler or 300RUM.  I like the weight of these rifles and the firearm has fantastic reviews. does anyone know of a rifle I should look at that would be in the same class as the aforementioned rifle? I know Nosler makes the M48 Patriot but I am not sold on it just yet! PM and replies would be great! I plan on putting a NightForce ATACR 5-25x56 scope on top.

Sweet. Fun project. My pot stirring comnent is why go that small?  Big magnum.....a real man wouldn't consider antyhing that doesn't begin with a 338 something something.  I of course am NOT a real man and would likely need a zanax before settling behind one but I do some day want a big big magnum to throw big bullets a loooong way.

When I got my Browning X-Bolt long range setup, I was going between Browning and Sako.   I liked the Sako 85 Long Range as well.  It only comes in 300WM and 338 Lapua.  The Nosler rifles are also nice.

For scope, instead of NightForce, I went Swarovski.  Z5 5-25x52.  And had Outdoorsmans make custom ballistic turrets for my ammo setup (https://outdoorsmans.com/products/outdoorsmans-custom-turret).  I love this scope.

I don’t know anything about xbolts but I do know it’s hard to go wrong with 300 rum now days.  Good brass, tons of bullet choices.  That and I hate anything that has to do with nosler :chuckle:

I am a huge fan of the CZ safari magnums.

if you want an old school big bore consider the 375 H&H.  The parent of many of the modern mags!

hard hitting, lots of bullets, manageable recoil.  Not a long range cartridge though.  mine shoots well to 300 yards.

You didn’t say how much your budget is but I’m guessing by the interest in the Browning-Mcmillan that you don’t have a problem dropping $2500 on a rifle? If going to that extent I think I would find a Remington action & have a 300 Rum built for not much more money. If your wanting the rifle ASAP then I’d look at a Christianson arms or the Browning with some trigger work done. :twocents:

I have a patience issue, someday ill have a precision gun built. but I think I would go with a 300PRC for that, right now I just want a naked rifle in a 28 Nosler or 300 RUM in sub 8LB rig. if it comes in at around 10 LBS with scope and sling I would be OK with that. If I ever go to Idaho or Montana to hunt this will be the rig that goes with

I am leaning on 28 Nosler for the factory hunting rig, the other rifle in the future may even be a .338 Edge or something of that nature

Have you looked at the Fierce rifles?  On Target Outdoors has quite a few in stock.  They come in 28 Nosler and 300 RUM as well.  Pretty sweet guns.  They're spendy, but light, and they're tack drivers.  My next rifle is going to be their carbon fury (not sure what caliber yet).
