Title: WA elk hunt
Post by: Ace on March 26, 2020, 11:10:44 AM
17points. Getting old. Looking for a unit to put in for that holds some big bulls. I know itís all going down hill but I need to do it soon before I canít. Someone said the Skouk.

I would say pick one of the several known units, but also keep your expectations realistic.  With 17 points, the premium units are going to be under 5% chance that you draw.

17 or 7 points . Odds dont really matter it's a random draw with bonus points. With number of tags so low in most upper tier draws, points dont help much.  Dont plan on winning it will just make the disappointment worse.

:yeah: lots of 17 point holders out there, you are better off just finding a place to hunt over the counter, and put in for a special permit that matches your tag.  So when you donít draw, you still have a good plan.

Iím 22. With 12 quality points. Like said above, figure out your general OTC hunt and use the draw as a backup. Now that itís getting harder and harder to draw, and in the coming years will only get more difficult.

Everyone saying I wonít get drawn ! I have hope. I wonít give up. They said that to me last year on my deer tag and I got drawn. Expect the worst , hope for the best and you will never be disappointed in life. Just looking for a unit that has some big bulls. I donít want a average bull. I already have many of those. I always have next year and after. When it gets to the point where I canít get out and hike then I will lower my standards to a meat hunt. For those of you who say they will never get drawn , donít give up or donít put in. If you put in every year then that tells me you havenít given up

Members on this site said I wouldnít get drawn. I didnít give up. When I got drawn members said I would only get a 160-170 buck. I didnít give up. Took six days after seeing lots of 160-170ís. Persistence and patience !!!!

I like the way you think!
And what an incredible buck you harvested on a tag that you will never draw! Congrats!

Most unit's hold a few sleeper bulls. What weapon makes a difference on when you draw.  For every one time you get a tag for modern you can get 3 for archery. (Rough early Saturday am math)

I'm not saying a unit but generally, like your muley tag, draw odds are often telling of quality of animals. But if your like me you avoid the most popular hunts and take pride in finding quality animals in less popular area's. :twocents:

Nice buck BTW

Thatís exactly how I want it. If I wanted a easier draw with smaller bulls I think I would have already been drawn. Iím not sure what tag I have the points for but I think itís the bull one that I have the points for. Itís the one that has the Dayton hunt. Rifle.

Dayton is quality, there is the regular rifle and the 1010 only.  6 tags given last year, the odds with 17 points are significantly less than 5%.  To have a 10% chance, a guy needs over 34 points :'(

The 1010 only tag has better odds but only 2 tags last year.

I haven't checked tag numbers for this year.

Waiting for the regs to come out to see. Might try for on of the early hunts. Iíve spent tons of time in the clockum and know where those guys stay. After the eat hunt they go into the reserve and wonít come out. Bugled some big boys there during the rut. Gonna just have to wait and see when the regs come out

17 points put you in a position that you could draw this year and may not draw in 20 more years. The odds for any of the decent tags really suck all the way around no matter how many points a guy has.

The recommendation from the Biologist for Dayton rifle is 3 tags this year.  I had one of the 6 last year and it was tough!  1010 is on majority of private land.  You better know someone if you draw 1010.

Not majority private itís 100% private.

Iíd stick with the clockum since you know it, then as a second choice little natches rifle rut tag.  But chasing the big bull tags is a long endeavor.
