My dad and I drew the late Alta mule deer tag with 20 points. I'm 41 and have been applying since high school with a few missed years early on. I now live out of state and my dad is 70 so this will be the last time we hunt this unit. We know the Smith, Chicamun, Ben Canyon area, but if anybody has other areas we should check out please feel free to post here or reach out privately. My dad can get around pretty well for his age, I can go anywhere and do whatever possible for the biggest buck. We can be there the whole season.
-
Good luck, shoot straight.

Thanks man, I hope you're doing well!

I drew Gardner with 15 points this year. I will also be there the whole season. I can point you guys to some good spots!

Awesome! Congrats on the pull @whuppinstick. I've enjoyed your previous draw threads, that Idaho goat hunt was EPIC.
Hope you kill a stud and have a good season with your dad.

Ha, thanks! I have another Idaho story I should take the time to post. I'll try to put that one together this summer.

Wow 20 points on the Alta. Congrats

Any of you old timers have any Polaroids of Alta bucks from the old days ? Everyone loves a little history right ? Like looking through the photos from way back at Ardenvoir store in Entiat area. Very cool.

Always love history

Dream Buck right there.
-
Damn zwickeyman that miss must still haunt you -I might need an extra week off to begin healing process after missing a deer like that. That buck is at least 30” it looks like
-
Ya missin that buck would sting alittle! :yike:
-
I still think about it quite often, still stings
-
Muzzy is tough, i feel your pain. Biggest buck ive ever got a shot at i missed him- muzzleloader.
Biggest bull ive ever got a shot at i missed-muzzleloader. The bull miss still haunts me.

I know your pain, I missed a 350+ bull about 20 years ago in Oregon, I still wake up in a cold sweat from that miss. 28 yards, I guessed 40 shot right over his back.. a chip shot I missed and I am still having a hard time dealing with it.. I guess I know how Ray Finkle felt.. Laces out Dan.....
-
I shot and rolled a muley buck well over 200” in 2018 with my muzzy. He got up and disappeared forever into some bluff country that was unsafe to follow into with 12” snow on the ground. I returned in the spring right after snow melt, but never found any sign of him.
-
Maybe give Aaron Lee a call with Early Winters Outfitters? He would probably have helpful info. Going with the last few posts, first archery hunt ever. Get to the spot at the crack of dawn. Two very respectable mule deer bucks start coming at me. I am trembling with excitement. They go behind some trees so i set up next to a tree (they are coming up hill at me). I think to myself, better draw before they come out from the trees because that'd be about 30 yards max. I go to draw and realize I forgot my release. :yike:

Here's a couple of pics of a buck I missed with my Muzzy on the late hunt in 2015
Beautiful buck, there are some real nice bucks in that unit still, not like it was 20 years ago but still holds some dandies here and there. I think it was 1990 or 91(can't remember) my dad and I went into an area in that unit the 2nd week of November to do some counts in a couple migration routes we know of, we no sooner sat down to glass a draw when a buck about the size of the one in your picture stood up about 50 yards down the hill along with 5 does that were bedded around him. They calmly stood up and then about another 150 more started popping up all around them along with about another 6 bucks this size and bigger, darnedest thing I ever saw, they were all over in about a foot of snow laying in patches of brush and deadfalls. Another buck that looks like and reminds me of is the one who came up the hill and rammed my buddies truck trying to get to the photographer from Outdoor Life that got a little to close :chuckle: Already told that story in another thread, that big fella was in a different unit in the Methow years ago, had a neck the size of a barrel and was in no mood to have his picture taken :chuckle:. Sorry, good ole days stuff
-
In 1941 my great grandma killed a HUGE 4 x 4 at 8:30 in the morning in an area within unit 242, not a big deal right? Well her sister killed a HUGE 4 x 4 on the same morning at 8:30 in 218, my grandmas was 29 inches wide and her sisters was 29 wide, grandmas buck field dressed at 284 lbs and her sisters................280 :bash:.I posted pics on here of the 2 bucks a few years ago, looked like twins but killed 50 miles apart. 2 years later they both "lassoed" another big 4 x 4 that could have been the triplet to the other two, it was killed in 224, I had fun posting that picture, thats one of the pictures everyone was copying so I pulled most of my pictures off.
-
Big Mac, your making us wish we lived 40 years ago!! We could only wish those were still the days.. :(
-
Congrats to your dad Dave, I didn’t realize Alta was such a good draw! I don’t know the unit at all, but if I have time and you guys need help packing, I’m in!
-
Big Mac, your making us wish we lived 40 years ago!! We could only wish those were still the days.. :(
It truly was a different valley 25 and more years ago for sure
And to the OP, yes, congratulations to your dad on the draw, like I said before, certainly not what it used to be but nowhere in the valley is. Still at that time of year and throw in some weather and your dad will do just right.......good luck

Thanks man, but I think this will be shortest pack I've done in years so we should be okay. :)
Also, just in case it wasn't clear, we both drew the tag.
-
David, you and your Dad will do the tags justice and I know the hunt write-up will be even better 😉

My dad's 2015 General Season Buck. I'd love to draw that late tag.

Yeah I did. Posted him as the Methow Beast.

I remember this buck, 2015 was the year of big bucks and taxidermists being overloaded, that was the year for sure.

I remember this buck, 2015 was the year of big bucks and taxidermists being overloaded, that was the year for sure.
2015 was one of those years we will probably never see again in the Methow, last time I seen anything close was 1971. 2015 was a combination of a few things with the biggest being the food/water situation on the summer range, especially water, a lot of water sources had all but dried up. 1971 was a series of early storms and also a feed/water issue up high. We had killed 9 bucks by noon the 2nd weekend of the season a few days after the storms hit, deer were pouring in to the point where my dad said he had never seen anything like it and up until his death a few years ago never did since, we seen waves of deer in herds numbering in the hundreds coming down a few select routes that went on for days and days. We had old 8mm film of one migration coming through a route in unit 218 that numbered over 800 head in one herd. I personally seen over 3000 deer in 8 days during that 1971 season.

Yes sir, that is definitely a stud of a buck!

I'll be there today with the same tag. I was hunting Sunday & Monday. Did alot of glassing. Temperatures were warm & seen a fairly decent amount of deer in morning. 50-60 1st day & about 30 the next day but I was in just one area that day & hiked out a ridge. Only a Deer were heading to shaded north slopes to bed. Maybe 10 confirmed bucks spotted due to distance & no big bucks. Bucks were not pestering does much those days. Sounds like activity may be picking up & bucks are moving from what I've heard on the Entiat from a friend. It's been a fun hunt so far. If you get up in elevation on shaded roads there is compact snow/ice. Bring chains if you are planning to go up in elevation. Goodluck & maybe I'll bump into you.
-
Good luck
-
My daughter and I drew the any whitetail tags for Alta Nov 1-20 and are heading over this coming weekend. Any whitetail buck sightings worth mentioning in Alta?
-
Good luck guys. Can't wait to see your results. Great pics of some of the bucks that have came out of here.

My daughter and I drew the any whitetail tags for Alta Nov 1-20 and are heading over this coming weekend. Any whitetail buck sightings worth mentioning in Alta?
heard from several people last year about whitetails in this unit during my mule deer tag and never laid eyes on a single one. I saw tons of muleys in fields and no whitetails
-
Lots of white tail in the valley off the rivers i.e. old Carlton /Twisp rd. But then there are a lot of mule deer does there too fed by the locals in their yards
-
Still the same as I mentioned earlier. Seeing many bucks bit nothing very big. Seeing a number of bucks 18 to 22 inches moving across hillsides, checking small groups of does, & some casing or staying with the does. Had one 3x4 walk in front of my truck & couldn't care that I was even there. Hiked into a few secluded basins with only a few deer. Located a few deer up high along gmu boundary mainly in the timber. Warm days deer not out in open very much except morning & end of day. Hoping mountain snow that is coming in brings a few more out.
-
Keep at it. The weather is coming, the deer will move.
-
You checking the southern or northern part of the unit more?
-
went out yesterday with my dad. first thank you to the big camps that were in black canyon during modern for all of the split firewood. came out with a pick up load. saw moose sign all over. went up a few more canyons but not seeing much till just about 330. its like they just all of a sudden decided diner time. had two bucks located with 13 does. one i would really like to get a shot at come the 25th. watched another buck with two does just as we were making our way out. i would guess he is 24 to maybe 26 in . we could see he was a big 3x3. we did see a couple of white tails but way low and no bucks. we had two white does cross in front of the truck right before rest awhile fruit stand. two more weeks cant come quick enough.
-
Tagging... Good luck!
-
Lots of action - long story short we have passed many smaller bucks and missed a wallhanger yesterday - just having a blast and hoping to get another chance at that big dog and weather is coming soon
-
Keep at it
Thank you for the update
-
This is gonna get interesting!

Yeah, with this weather... this could get crazy 8)

Quick update from my dad and me: we've been at it for a few days and will be here through the end of season. Have seen one nice nontypical 6x5 that I was able to get my dad on yesterday. Unfortunately he missed at 300 yds. Good day for glassing today. My dad is in Elderberry, I'm working around to the Lookout then going to glass into Ben. Saw one 24" 4 pt this morning. Not big enough for this tag and he had busted off the front left fork. Looks like we have a lot of weather coming.
-
Getting good.!!

Booth

We are 2/4 so far, no monsters but what a good time - wish we could do this hunt every year

We are all done - 3/4,couldnt get my Dad a shot but he went home and got his cow elk in the Siouxon the next day ! Cant figure out how to post pics but I got a 27” wide 3 pt(thought it was a 4 when i shot but whatever), a nice 3x4 and a nice 2pt. Awesome hunt even though we couldnt kill the 2 monsters we saw
-
Screen shoot them on your phone and they should resize to the correct format. Congrats! Sounds like a great hunt
-
Ok i will try that - thanks
-
Here is my 3 point - if this picture works
-
Great buck! Look at the neck on him.
-
That's a dandy 3 point.
-
Very nice where did you end up taking him at?
-
Very cool!
-
Thanks guys - Black Canyon area
A couple things i learned on this hunt - wish i were younger/more in shape and the BIG bucks are much smarter even during the rut. The 2 mashers we saw acted nothing like all the smaller ones, they acted almost they were not rutting yet ? Not sure,im just a blacktail hunter mostly- never really hunted mulies during the rut much.
-
Nice buck! Congratulations
-
That is a shooter 3pt for sure! Great buck!!
-
Nice buck! I seen a nice 3pt & 4pt early last week on there & might have passed you. Seen 8 bucks that day but nothing I was looking for. Back at it. Snow is deep & difficult but was able to get up 4,000 ft yesterday & was snowing. Deer were in the timber & seen a few does. Dropped down lower & glassed up a decent buck & may have to get a closer look at him today.
-
Well congrats on your buck. That Black Canyon area has really been hit by Wolves the past few years. Talked to a special permit holder last year that hunted it and all he brought up was the amount of wolf sign he saw. He said he didn't see anything larger than a 2 point but then he had a quad in the back of his truck so he may have spent a lot of time on it. That upper Black Canyon used to hold some dandies as did Squaw or Hunters Cr as its labeled now. good job
-
That’s a Great Buck! Congratulations!
-
Thanks-
-
Yep, Nice buck Jeff! Good meeting you out there and congrats!
-
Gentry thanks so much for your help - I woulda been outta there at midnight that night if it werent for you Sir !

After 19 year of applying I Just finished up my late Alta hunt. my last day I finally pulled the trigger on this 3x4.
Seen lots of buck but never saw the toad I was after. I was also able to help put a friend on a nice 4x4 that was pretty respectable (hope he post pics for you all to see).
Hope everyone had a great hunt and made some great Memories.
-
May not be the toad you were after, but that is a very nice buck.

Nice buck. Sounds like your hunt was worth the wait.

Got a text from David this morning, I’m sure he will chime in soon.

Nice buck!
I was lucky enough to get a second chance on the last day. Just say I am not a long range shooter yet! I was able to get 140 yards to harvest this great buck. The Alta Unit is not an easy unit due to mountainous terrain & access when snow gets deep. 18 inches of snow in some locations. Plan on hiking & glassing alot unless you are lucky. I seen plenty of bucks but nothing over 22 inches. This was the only big buck that I seen.

Congrats on a nice buck. The Alta unit is a large unit with various types of terrain. A person can make the hunt as difficult to hunt as they want. While still a shadow of what the quality and thus quantity it used to be there still are some nice bucks in it. Congrats again.

Thanks & yes you are correct. I grew up un this area where I hunted & recreated. I knew that deer numbers were not going to be great. I thouroughly enjoyed seeing the landscape, watching the deer progress through the rut, & seeing friends & family.

Awesome deer!!

I have been applying for this hunt since I was in high school and I'm 42 now. There were a few missed years while I was abroad, but I also put in as a nonresident for the last seven years, hoping to draw this tag together with my dad. Even though I waited that long for this tag, I still had another important hunt the first week of November in Idaho's backcountry. I was able to kill this bull on my first day, but the 15-mile solo pack out took me six days.
I arrived to the Alta unit a couple days later than planned on November 11th, but that still left nine days of hunting. On my first evening I found this buck:
He looked good, but I was hoping for better and thinking I might be able to get my dad on him the following morning.
We headed in the next day to get my dad a first-hand view through the spotting scope. He was heavy but not especially wide or tall, but my dad was in love with his non-typical points so we made a push on him. Unfortunately we could only get to 300 yards and my dad missed. But two days later we were able to get on him again, this time my dad was in position at 100 yards while I watched from 300 yards across the draw. He didn't miss this time.

The next day it snowed allllll day long, about 12" worth. I saw 60-70 deer including 15+ bucks, but nothing worth a second glance.

The snow was at least a foot deep everywhere, knee-deep in most places up high.

With more weather incoming, we decided we needed to move camp so as not to get stranded for the winter.

Due to either sweat from the inside or snow from the outside, my entire wardrobe was drying around the inside of the tent every night.

I spotted a decent 5x4 on the evening of the 17th and spent the 18th and 19th unsuccessfully trying to re-find him. On the last day we went to a different area and at 10am I spotted a "last day buck" very far away. My dad made a fire and watched as I spent two hours closing on him. At noon I crossed over the final ridge and got lucky as he and his doe were walking straight towards me. One shot at 168 yards with the Kimber Mtn Ascent .280 AI and season ended not as I'd hoped, but successful nonetheless.

We packed him all out in one load, which was probably a bit much.

Awesome man. Most guys would take him on the first day. Your dads buck is a dream buck and yours is nothing to snuff at. 7 years of non resident is some serious commitment. Congrats to you both. Memories for a lifetime.

I'll try to post it in the backcountry forum soon. I killed two wilderness bulls this year. The first took me 19 days to close the deal and was a 10-mile pack.

Cool.
I look forward to it.

One hell of a season for you, Congrats! Time is best spent with the old and the young ones included, as time can (and will) change so quick.
