Title: Archery Entiat
Post by: Gonehuntin01 on June 16, 2020, 08:26:38 AM
I drew the archery Entiat buck tag.  Drew with 14 points.  I plan on getting over several times for summer scouting looking for roadless draws.  I am a very avid archery elk hunter and have no issues putting boots on the ground.  I'm pretty excited about the potential to harvest a great buck.  Any suggestions, greatly appreciated.

I would be ready for any and all weather conditions. That time of year, it can go from clear and sunny to sideways snow and drifts before you know it. Ideally, you would get enough snow to push the deer down out of the high country but not so much snow that you can't get around. Should be a fun hunt no matter what but also will take some work to get within bow range. Good luck!

This is exactly what everyone I know says about the unit. I've never hunted it but its beautiful country. Take lots of pics for us! Good luck

Roadless draws? Not in that unit. Archery hunt from the I90 side of the unit. Much more stockable terrain. Those deer will get on top of dunes and scan. Many times they will look right past you if you stand still. Don't give up if you see a big buck he won't go far.  Don't drive from the Mardon side to the center of the unit and hike toward i90. You will waste time walking through a dead zone. Hunt between A rd and C rd. You can park at the end of both. Take off your boots for your stocks. Even in the sand they hear everything.

not sure there are many sand dunes in the entiat...  :chuckle:

I would scout roads and terrain more than anything.  The bucks your gonna want to shoot are going to filter down into the unit due to weather.  There are roads everywhere, but narrow, slippery, and possibly blocked due to down timber.  A full size vehicle is difficult to get around at times, I'd pack a chainsaw, tow strap, etc.

Like vandeman said be ready for inclement weather.  I've been on that hunt where it didn't get above freezing the whole time and it was low teens at night.

Be prepared and it should be a great time. Good luck!

I'm thinking that's the "other" great late archery tag :chuckle: :dunno:

There have been dozens of entiat buck picture threads over the years. I bet a quick search would drum up a few.

Dont be discouraged if you dont see many deer that weekend. Learn the roads, figure out some good glassing spots and youll be well on your way.

Deer are spread out in a big way through summer and into october up there.

I appreciate all the info.  I'm heading over late July and gonna start getting familiar and do some glassing.  Gonna be looking for good glassing points see what I can.  Thanks again.

Has anyone taken Slide Ridge rd down from Baldy Mtn? I tried to drive from the bottom to the top (heading NE) a couple years ago. It was gnarly! I had to turn around. It was night time too which didn’t help.

Hold out for at least a 150" the 1st 5 or 6 days.  U will see small 3 and 4 point bucks every day. My experience with that tag is that the big bucks will see u a lot of the time and let u get about 90 yards away and then take off. It's a fun hunt and action all day. Lots of glassing and lots of walking. Practice and get good our to 90yards so I can shoot at 70 Accurately.

I spent last Thursday and Friday mornings last week driving and glassing all over.  Became very familiar with the road systems.  Seen a lot of great glassing points and even seen a few decent local bucks.  Getting more excited as time gets closer.  Roads seemed pretty good for now, not all rutted up.  Went up Oklahoma Gulch side also, that looked like it could get a bit hairy.

Take chains the snow can roll in fast and heavy.  My buddy had the tag last year. Counted over 150 deer one day.

It's getting close.  Am really getting excited.  I have to take the wife out for her rifle deer tag.  She's just wanting to put some meat in the freezer.  Hope to see some bucks dropping this weekend.  Good luck to you all you rifle hunters.

Early snow in the mountains plus more snow in the forecast could set up for a good late season

Snowing is building, bucks are dropping and I am getting stoked.  I'm planning on getting over one more time before the archery late season opens.  Good luck rifle hunters, but try and leave me one.

Just finished probably the most exciting,  frustrating, amazing, and realistic hunt of my life.  I was seeing average of 150 deer a day, with 25-30 of them being bucks.  I was hunting a unit that took me 14 years to draw.  I wanted to kill a true trophy buck but was realistic in what I was willing to shoot.  I hunted for 7 days with the help of my son and one of my hunting partners.  I passed up bucks every day looking for the ONE.  I actually missed 3, with 2 of them being true trophy bucks.  Well today, I was finally able to find a buck and make it happen.  I dont like to post this kind of stuff, but it really meant a lot and was able to do it with my uncle Bob McMillan in my pack.  He made me a knife this year, which happened to be the last knife he made, as he passed away from cancer in October.  I had help from people on other forums and from friends of friends.  This was an amazing experience and can't wait to do it again.  Good hunting and good memories to you all.

It was just grown out that way.  I didn't see anything else wrong with him, other then his recent eye injury.
