Title: Who's hunted Green River 485?
Post by: Igottanewknee on June 16, 2020, 03:26:30 PM
My daughter and I were drawn as a group (15 points for her and 9 for me) and I was wondering who has hunted that tag and if they had any input. One thing for sure, I think we got lucky. What bit of information I've read on some of the past posts, it sounds like a fun hunt.

Really cool area, not what it once was as far as elk goes but you should do fine. Talk to the shed heads, they know were the animals are :twocents:

Consider going over there well before the season starts and just see if you can talk with some of the employees.  They are generally happy to share info.  If you wait unit opening morning to speak with them, well... you likely won't get as much info.

I was going to start doing just that. I'm curious how or where there is access points or where are the gates or offices. Would it be on the north or south side... approach it from 410 or I-90?.

You will need to go to the guard gate and get information to enter the watershed

I have the same tag but have not been there for years. I believe the guardshack is still off of the Headworks road past Kanasket Palmer State Park.

Got the permits in hand, so pretty stoked. Still haven't picked up a map yet, but when I do, I'll be getting back to you guys who have given me info already.
Weird thing though, the dates are different than the hunting regs. Hunting regulations say October 17th to the 23rd, while permit says 24th to 30th. Time to call Wdfw...

That is strange???  I'll be in there with my dad for his disabled buck tag.  The area is beautiful, you'll probably want to hit the elk fields that they made early in the morning.  Be the first guy at the gate and you'll get to pick which field you want, hopefully the others will leave you alone if you are already sitting there.  The big bulls will be hiding by then, those guys are tougher to find, but the rags will be in the fields.  Take advantage of the time you get to be in there, even if you tag out, stay and hunt bear, cougar, and just look around, you may find some sheds that the security guys missed.  When I've been in there some guards are cool, some didn't talk about locations of animals.  The mucks get to choose the dates so maybe that's why the dates possibly changed??  I actually hope those dates are the real ones, going to the 30th will be better for the deer hunters, doesn't really matter for the elk guys.

Seems like it would be October 24-30. I actually didn't apply for Green River this year because of the October 17-23 season that was listed, because I had plans to take my daughter for mule deer in eastern Washington the first weekend of deer season, which of course opens October 17. So I applied for Mudflow which had a November season, and drew it. First time I hadn't applied for Green River in probably at least ten years. The dates for deer in Green River is October 17-23, so it sure seems like the elk season would be after that.

Soooooo, are all the hunts pushed back a week? I tried calling but did email the wdfw today. Apparently it's a  furlough day for them, so hopefully hear something Monday. Maybe as Trophyhunt said, the Mucks may have changed things for us.

I would think that is a mistake. People apply for permits that fit their schedule and changing it after the drawing seems a bit idiotic. The tribe has slots but that has to have been decided long before the 17th start date was set. The strange thing is that they are putting the bull, cow and deer permits in there at the same time which looks ridiculous. It must be a pain to handle the hunters for more than a week? They got about 32 permit holders in there at the same time according to their hunting pamphlet. Seems a bit much but maybe the unit is larger than it looks?
Title: Re: Who's hunted Green River 485?

I just looked at the 2019 seasons and deer and elk quality permits had the same season- November 2-8.

So it probably is the October 17-23 season, but who knows. You'll have to clarify that with the WDFW on Monday.
Title: Re: Who's hunted Green River 485?

No matter what the dates truly are, they have always had all the hunters in at the same week, I've never seen them split it up.  The times I've been in there though, it's never been an issue, except the elk will get shot out of the fields by the first tag holder who is parked there, especially if it's a cow permit holder.  So If someone is parked at one end and the elk are on the same end, get to the other side because when they shoot, the elk will run towards you.  But thats for the second field not the first.  The first field is a long run way looking field and the road is only on one end.  At least was back then.

From the gate at Lester?  If so, that is/was Stampede.  The signs are at the end of the road by the train tracks.  Posted very well.  I havent been in there for 10 years or more so I could be wrong.

Yes received a letter from them yesterday with the corrected dates and the usual have to carry this letter with me when in the field, if you have not gotten an email, check your spam, or a letter by Thursday I would call back, and send another email. Best of luck on your hunt!

Did see a buck tag holder who had just harvested a dandy 4x4. Itís a cool experience for sure, if anyone has any specific questions shoot me a pm. Good luck guys!

I have had the buck and bull tag.  Here is the photo from the guard shack of each of the kill areas that they have you report once you take an animal.  Orange are the elk harvest and green are the deer.

That map with kills is very interesting. That sure isnít where Iíd be spending my time down in the valley. I could see it for deer a bit more, but for bulls Iíd be up high if the snow allows chasing the big boys. Iíve seen a lot of bulls rutting in the valley but I believe they bail out after the rut and gain some serious elevation.

I was in there last year for the buck tag in November. Didnít see many elk up high most down along the river. We had clear weather with no rain or snow. 6 days didnít see many elk. There wasnít a lot of animals killed last year. The cow elk people did ok but the bull elk and buck tags were way down.

Well,  on my 3rd email  and 2nd message left for someone there,  I finally got another reply. They said  after  consulting with their licensing people, they've decided they're going to send out hard copies. I know some of you said that you got the email they said they were going to send, but has anybody received a hard copy?

I still haven't received a thing from them. I guess I'll wait another 3 weeks to see if they will send me and my daughter our permits... >:(

Im sorry but... ANYONE who has been in that area and NOT seen multiple shooter bulls need to either have their eyes examined or dont know what they are doing. Both the Headworks and Massey gates are GREAT areas for elk and deer.

And I would take Me Doss up on his offer by the way... he has a specific reason to have so much experience in the area.

Sorry if facts and experience upset you so much. Iím not saying donít hunt it, I just donít think itís nearly what folks portray it as, this coming from 10-12 tag holders I know well, several buddies logging in there, another buddy that worked for the tribe that took me in there ďscouting ď. Kinda reminds me of kapowsin and all the 400Ē bulls running everywhere in there behind every tree but never get killed.

Why is there always someone pissing on another members hunt.
To me part of the fun is the antisapation of the hunt.

You on the other hand jumped in and trashed this hunt unsolicited. I'm still glad that people stepped in with some encouragement and a little advise, just can't for the life of me understand what you were doing with your 2 cents.

It appears it took you a day to post your rebuttal. Again, I wish you guys luck, and are successful. The simple facts of the matter are, no scouting can be done, unless you had a in like I did, itís brushy western Washington, very short season, the elk fields hold elk, but the big bulls wonít be there, timeframe sucks, competing with Indians, and they get to kill whenever they want, regardless of ďseasons ď. Good luck hope you kill, but again, it isnít a ďquality ď tag whatsoever imo.

Indian's get same amount of elk tags as WDFW tags that's what I've been told and Indian's this year go after WDFW tags so with these dates it could be a great quality tag. It's thick brush that's the westside. There's still some BIG bulls in there. Can't wait for the pics.

Just for kicks, I checked the success rate for the last 4 years....total 31 permits, 23 reports, 68.6% success on fifteen 5+ point bulls and a spike thrown in last year.  Sounds like a pretty good hunt to me, but my idea of quality may not be what some (one) on here thinks is quality.  That kind of a permit for me and my daughter would be about as quality as you get!

2 minutes on the "rebuttal", just don't spend all that much time on here. I will not be going in blind, so I feel somewhat confident we'll do ok. And it's ok if we don't. Thank you for your input, I will remain positive on my not quality hunt.
Probably won't do any replies till tomorrow afternoon. Then out of town till next Monday, so replies may be slow coming.

Igottanewknee and wamuledeer I wish you guys the best of luck. I will also say the unit holds some giant bulls and a really good bull to cow ratio. I feel like you guys have the right attitude and I hope you all get giants, especially your daughter. There is nothing like your kids success!
I hope this doesn't come across wrong but I think I hear 257 and agree. Many units in Washington, especially western Washington are over hyped. I have been attacked annually for being a realist and accused of being negative or misleading about trophy quality and the overall expectation of premium units. We all cannot help but dream of what might be and many dreams come true on these draws but I really feel like more are shattered (again I think your approach is correct and am making a generalization from experience).
Again, I wish you the best of luck and can't wait to see your successful hunt stories.

The thing is these tag holder's are excited about drawing a tag to hunt bulls where limited people get to hunt and when someone starts running there mouth and bashing them people get excited.  The watershed has a history of big bulls and to alot of people its a quality bull tag. If it's a 250  or 350 bull I'm sure they will be happy.  Hopefully they kill some 300 plus bulls. :twocents:

Its a fun hunt.  There are some giants in there.  One of the guards let me know that there was an 8x8 bull still lurking in there when I had the elk tag 3 years ago.  I took a little 4x5 bull even though there was a 6x6 in the same group I came across but I took the one that presented me with the best shot.  One of the guards sent me some photos of the big bulls that were taken by the other hunters when i was in there there were 2 nice 6x6 bulls and one beautiful dark horned 7x7.  I was happy with my little bull as my brother and I had a great time back in the watershed with lots of great memories.  I was also lucky to have the deer tag a few years prior and got a decent 3x3.  Seen quite a few big body 3x3 bucks running around without a care in the world while they were in the rut ha ha.

Again, just for kicks, it would be neat to know how many, if any, archery or muzzleloader tag holders have harvested bulls with this permit?

👍

It's tough, not near as many clearcuts  as one would expect. Killed a good bear in there, saw a damn good bull solo on the powerlines, lotsa  elk sign on the southside. If it were me I'd hit smay  creek\green mountain area..

*censored*

My son had the deer tag in there last year. We didnít see a single buck and hunted several days. Saw lots of cow elk, a couple spiked and a raghorn bull. It was a disappointing hunt from what I was expecting but it was still nice to get out in the woods with my son and not bump into other hunters everywhere.

The forum does not allow negativity and bickering in success topics and in topics like this where a member is asking for help. I removed some of the negativity and bickering by a couple people. I'm sure the hunters with tags will appreciate any helpful info to assist them with their hunt, but please keep comments helpful and on topic. Even negative info is very helpful when provided in a positive manner! THANKS

I was in there that year Furee65 took the pictures of the kill map with my kid for a buck hunt and you couldn't get up very high without chains because of all the snow.

My Dad had the bull tag last year; the weather was way too nice to have much luck and he didn't end up killing anything. We heard reports of bulls being taken in the elk pastures and in the high country, so they were spread out all over the watershed. He wasn't able to do a ton of hiking the brush due to his age, but if you can, and are willing to burn some boot leather, I would get off the mainline and actually hunt some of the deep canyons/big timber up Smay creek.  There will be about 30 vehicles driving up and down the mainline, all day long... And... pray for snow in the high country. A little snow would help to start moving them down and concentrate them a bit. There seems to be two types of elk in there: the almost tame ones (There was one 300+ 6 point spotted with a herd of 60 cows walking down the mainline at 11 am one day, near the elk pastures) and the truly wild ones that act like normal elk. The only bull we saw was right at daylight in the back of Smay creek and he took off like a cut cat! Also, the staff running the hunt are super helpful and are a great resource. They spend all year driving the roads so they have a good idea of where the animals are.
Good luck; it is a fun hunt, and it's gorgeous country to explore regardless of whether you kill or not. We saw goats, bears, several nice bucks...

Great info, my dad has a disabled buck tag this year, would you mind sending me a pm on those areas where you saw big bucks??  I've been in there before but things change and it's been a while.  So the dates are correct in the pamphlet aren't they?  the permit card had the wrong dates I think, my dad hasn't received his pamphlet yet???

You need to contact the licensing department of Wdfw to get the updated permit. Although they did say they were calling everyone to check out if you received the new permit (email with attachment). I'll look up the number and name of the person I talked to and PM you.

I used to hunt up on top of the watershed by Lester for grouse. Never wen t home empty handed. I think they try to limit the amount of shooting in there for safety reasons. They will have thirty plus shooters in there for deer and elk.

We are the Muckleshoot, or Muckleshoots.

Well I was the member who got lucky this am. Got to the gate we wanted to be about half hour before shooting light. We stepped out and my hunting bud let out a bugle. Almost immediately we had a response and he was very vocal. Got back in truck anxiously awaiting shooting light.  At light we slowly walked down road and bugled a couple times. Each time a bull responded. We got closer and bull just kept bugling without us even calling. We got within a couple hundred yards of where we thought he would be. Then he popped out behind some brush along with a pile of cows. It was still pretty dark even at shooting light so wanted to make sure he was a shootable bull. I had one clear shot once I saw he was a good bull but he had cows behind him. Waited for them to clear but then he went behind some brush. Buddy called again and bull steps out in small opening. Waited again to get a clear shot and make sure he was the bull. When I saw it was I took a shot. He was hit good with first shot and didnít go far but was slowing walking through trees.  I had to take a couple more shots to get him down. 7:07 am on opening morning. Canít complain about that.  He is a 6x6 but one point busted off. Thanks everyone for tips.

Yes at least two Bulls not sure about cows, there would have been another cow taken had my rifle not been stowed in the back seat! Look son there's an Elk standing 50 yards off the mainline, oh crap! my rifle is in the back seat...Son watches as Elk walks away while dad fumbles to get rifle out of back seat! Moral of the story always keep your rifle close. Saw a nice fork Buck and a Coyote too! Be back on Tuesday to try again! :)

The green river water shed is doing pretty good this year, good bulls some cows and the buck my dad and I took today.  The number of deer seen by us in 2 days was, 1 doe and 2 bucks. We saw two cows today and one spike bull.  I hope the rest of the buck tag holders find their dream bucks!  We found a good buck today, spent all day Learning roads and burning diesel.  Around 3 pm we found a really nice clear cut that covered lots of ground, decided to stay till dark.  While Glassing I found a white elk  shed About 200 yards uphill right at the tree line.  Well, my butt has been getting kicked on shed hunting the past couple years, so no way was I going to leave it laying there for those damn  Chipmunks to keep chewing on! Little did I know I was within 150 yards of a good buck! I forgot to mention that it poured all morning, by the time I got back to the truck, I was soaked from the waist down, but i broke my losing streak!

Side note-  my dad has diabetes, itís a constant struggle to keep his blood sugar levels good. This tag was his disabled buck tag. On October 3rd this year he took his first bull with the little Naches disabled tag. He will be 78 tomorrow.
So when I get back to the truck with my chalky shed, I see my day eating every thing he brought that has sugar and drinking as much orange juice as he can. His blood sugar was at 60, I think 40 is dangerous.  He was shaking and confused, scared me and I said letís just road hunt out of here.  Well, I had to take one last glass into the cut, 345 yards out I see something odd.  Itís so odd I have to keep looking, I shut off the truck to keep all vibrations as low as possible to focus on what looked odd. With my 10x42 Binos , that tiny little white patch Kept looking like a suspect.  I walked about 20 yards closer, rested my binos on my shooting sticks, and confirmed what my mind was trying to tell me, I was looking at a white faced ghost!
Iíve been blacktail hunting since I was 18, Iím 51 now and Iíve never seen a better buck in my optics. I look at my dad and give him the wide open arm, silent, holy sh*t sign!  So I get back in the truck and we discuss what to do, he tells me to take him. Iím severely conflicted, I want nothing more than to see him take a buck but he is not in good shape. He says, look at me (shaking), I canít make the shot. Decision time, do I shoot his deer for him, or wait for another day? He tells me again, take him son!  We decided I should take this deer, I was shaking like a leaf, the coffee I just drank didnít help with that!
I drove down the road enough to make it a 200 yard shot, gun on shooting sticks, turn scope up to 6 power and put the cross hairs on him. He was still bedded down looking at us.  Boom! Took me about 30 seconds to pull the trigger on that first shot, couldnít quit shaking! He jumped up, did a walk backwards dance and I put one more in him. My first shot was money, didnít know it at the time so a second shot was sent, that shot was bad, broke his hip and messed up some good meat. But, he was down!
I heard my dad yelling, he saw that last flip of the deer and go down, he was more excited than I was (maybe!). After my last shot, I saw a really nice 2 point stand up, he didnít leave till I was 40 yards away from him. My dad and I hugged and well, we just embraced the moment. This year has been beyond what I can explain. The day before we got the call that he was cancer free, his first elk, my biggest blacktail ever, what is next??  He has one more permit to fill, a second deer (doe) tag for the desert unit.  Sorry for the long story, just feeling good right now. Thanks to igotanewknee and his guys for help loading our deer, was great to talk with you guys and enjoy each otherís success.  What a day!

Even though we got a great deer, and a couple bulls came out, my over all impression of the shed is, itís over rated. Itís a cool place to be in, donít get me wrong, but we have been in every day except Monday and we have seen two bucks, 5 does, one spike elk and 3 cows.  In an area that is probably the most protected area in the state. I hear there are a lot of predators, havenít seen one yet, no bears, cats or coyotes. The inspectors are great, friendly and helpful.  Trying to not be completely negative, just honest.  A few points sure, but more than a few points, Iíd apply else where.  What is really crazy is the cow elk hunters arenít doing well??  That makes no sense, but maybe this year the cow hunters arenít trying hard? Every morning there should be a dead cow in the elk fields, the inspector I talked to doesnít get it either.  We did pick about 3 lbs of chanterelles though!!  Two more days to try and kill a bear, still excited to visit the shed.

Igotanewknee, have you guys hit the 18.5 mile area? I was told the elk hang out there all year long. And that road that goes to Lester, about 1 or 2 miles after smay creek, is also nice. Good luck, hope you guys get one!

 :yeah:

I have been there Sunday, Tuesday, Wednesday (Today 10/21) and have not seen nearly what I had anticipated. I have seen Elk everyday and had missed opportunities, Sunday I had my rifle in the back seat of my truck and as I was getting it out she walked away and I could not find her again. Tuesday I had three opportunities, first was in some thicker brush and all I could see was a quartering shot through a vine maple patch and nothing but Elk Butt, so no shot. Second was two cows with a six by six crossing the mainline, got out and the three of them stuck together like glue and could not get a clean shot on either cow, and they blew out fast.

Third opportunity was a moral/legal decision, had a huge cow standing dead center of the mainline on a blind corner just looking at me dumbfounded. I put my crosshairs on her vitals checked the background and could not justify the shot!

I spent more time in the brush today and was disappointed not to see any Elk in the timber and only one doe, and a spike Blacktail. I did see a cow with a calf and they bolted as soon as I stopped the truck.

Sunday we did see a nice fork Buck and a Coyote, oh and today I finally saw some old Bear sign.

This is the exact spot I shot my elk 3 years ago. Also had 2 bucks fight about 15-20 yards from me while I was field dressing my elk ha ha. I also found some cougar tracks up near eagle lakes.

Well, my daughter got it done today with a couple hours to spare. She shot a 4x5 that was with a herd of 12 cows. It was raining and snowing and all around blustery. We had gotten soaking wet a couple times hiking around down by the walk in area, so decided to take a ride up to a clear cut on the eastern side of smay creek while warming up in the truck. We came around a corner into the clear cuts when my buddy saw the elk. They started to run but stopped and gave her a shot. First shot a clean miss, second shot dropped it.
My buddy and I started quartering it(his first try at it, and me not much help... bad back, knees and hands), while my daughter started taking the quarters up to the truck, which was a couple hundred yards away. She hauled 3 quarters and the trimmings.
All I can say is I'm pretty damn proud of her.
We both got our trophy on this hunt and we both couldn't be happier!!

I need to thank my buddies Jon and Bobby for all their help, my son and daughter for the work they put in, the inspectors at the watershed for their help, and everyone on here for their input and encouragement. Again, a great week and some good times. Thank you all...

The inspectors were so helpful and just wanted everyone to have a successful hunt. They were over the top excited for me and helped grab meat and gave us a lift back to my truck on last load. It was a great experience for sure.

A good time was had by all. I wish we had the whole crew with us so we could have gotten it out faster, but the 3 of us got it handled. My buddy Jon, who was with us the 1st two mornings, was helping skin out the skull today. He said this elk looked like the one she couldn't get on to the first day. The elk were on a clear cut that was only about a half mile or so away from the one from the 1st morning. Maybe it was the same one and it was meant to be.
Again,  tickled pink with the 2 elk.

Great reports from the shed, good to hear what is really going on in there this year.  Nice critters too.
