Title: Knight Western Ulite in the Rock Pit
Post by: Sabotloader on July 07, 2020, 03:53:14 PM
Well I finally got time to test shoot the Barnes bullet that I cut knurls in to increase the diameter of the bullet to fit my rifle.  So this morning I drove out to the Rock Pit and setup for a good morning of shooting.  And when it was over it was a good morning of shooting.

Got to the pit and got everything setup. When I started shooting I chose to shoot the Lehigh .458x275 in an Orange .457/.458x50 sabot to confirm that the rifle was sighted in. The first two shots at the Clays verified the rifle was sighted in.

Some of you might remember a couple of weeks ago I took a handful of Barnes 50x275 MZ Expanders and using a tubing cutter and an Allen wrench and cut knurling lines in the bullet to increase the diameter of the bullet to fit the bore on my Western ULite.

This picture shows the knurling operation in progress.

Todays shooting was to verify the fit and accuracy of the bullet.  It was a good day!

The last two shots of the morning really produced a feel good moment.  I found a Clay chip from a previous visit on the rock wall and decided to go after it.  My rifle is sighted in to shoot 2.97" , well three inches high at 100.  Knowing that I tried to hold the bead under the chip approximately 3" under the chip.  My first shot was high - I missed.  Loaded up again and held slightly lower and took the shot.  Chip left the wall.

Now I really wish I could use them during ML season here, but I will be able to use in our regular rifle season.

What sights are those on your muzzle stuffer.

I have removed the factory Knigh sights and replaced them with Williams sights

Williams FP Peep sight.

And a Williams ramp, Williams fiber Fire Sight Optic sight, with a Williams Fire Sight hood

I have found that I really like a Green fiber rod versus the Red rod

I have the part numbers if you want them

Sabotloader: Did you need to modify the stock to get the Williams Sight to work? I have the same rifle but didn't think the Williams FP Peep would work without a mod to the stock. Thanks

I did have to modify the stock a little bit and I also had to modify the sight slightly also.  Not sure I have pictures but I will look and I do not I will get some.

This is what one forum member did but I didn't do quite as much cutting on the stock

This picture shows the stock modification I made.

Then with a metal file I filed the back side of the elevation bar to contour to fit over the stock. This filing takes patience and frequent testing for fit.

This is the view from underside of the sight.

Works very well for me - I have completed 4 of these operations.  Three and four were a lot easier than 1 & 2

One other filing operation will probably be need to keep the bolt handle from hitting the underside of the elevation bar as you lift the bolt handle up.

If you look at the pictures carefully you will see where I contoured the bottom of the so the bolt will not hit the bar... wait I think I have a pic of that also - just got to find it.

Really hope some of this helps

Thank You Sabotloader. I got a great deal on my Ulite when I bought it during the Veteran's Day sale last year. I finally got all the Williams parts you have switched out for your Ulite except for the peep. I prefer the Williams FP cuz that is what I have on my Bighorn & Disc Extreme. I ended up getting a NECG WEAVER Peep Sight. I thought that I would just check to be sure Williams didn't have a peep I could use without doing the mods to my new gun. Thank you much for taking the time to respond.

I don't have any muzzy hunts planned for this fall so getting my new gun setup & range visits will probably need to wait until after the new year.

Thank you for all you do.
