You're right, I thought that was all Colockum Wildlife Area, but a good block is managed by DNR.

https://www.dnr.wa.gov/publications/amp_rec_greendot_naneum_colockum_05012019.pdf?9tfka7

Hopefully they are being overly cautious and it will open up this weekend or next week.  Lots of good area still open there though on NFS and the Quilomene.

Usually when DNR closes their lands the WDFW does the same. I bet we'll be seeing an announcement soon.

Well my dad and i are 2 of the bull tag holders for Archery in the colockum. We are in the group with camp set as we were up for the weekend and came out Monday to resupply and was heading back in tomorrow.  Well obviously that plan had changed and we are in a small scramble mode to be honest. Let's hope they open it.

Think we have 40% of the tags accounted for now. You have 2, we have 2, someone else posted the standard help post, and I believe 1 other person too.

The federal land still has great areas to chase elk. Our camp and plans A to E are closed, and we hope to be able to hunt them at some point, but we focused on F to J in the federal lands since we've never hunted there so have some spots to look at.

Feel free to PM to exchange  notes or sync up. If you we only scouted, don't have any great knowledge of the areas, but that adds an element of fun for me.

If all the general crowd, 75 cow hunters and all 12 bull hunters show up on federal, the pressure will make it challenging to say the least... Bring it on!

Oh for sure we are ready. We've hunted the NF side before and did a luttle scouting that way also this year. It was our intent to hunt that way for a couple days possibly if we weren't seeing what we wanted.  Been ripping apart onx finding even more spots that way now.  Good luck to you guys.

DNR is supposed to re-evaluate the conditions today and decide if the closure ends or stays.

Any one have any idea when they might post something? And Where?

Conditions have not improved much, except that the fire fighters have made progress in getting containment on several fires, and the smoke seems to be slowly clearing out. So I'm not expecting that they will lift the recreation ban.

Has anyone seen any updates on target shooting on DNR land?
Title: Re: DNR land east of cascades closed
Post by: HillHound on September 17, 2020, 02:49:30 PM
Iím not sure if itís all DNR but an area close to me that is on DNR put in a damn hipster bicycle trail thatís attracting all the dang Subaru drivers. And since then they have had no target shooting signs up in definitely. So again I donít know if thatís just to protect the heavily concentrated granola crunchers on that piece of DNR or if they have gone to no target shooting on all dnr. And before anybody gets on me for ragging on the bicyclists I did give them a chance. Until I was confronted by two of them who told me I had no business sneaking around dressed in camouflage with a sniper rifle when there was no hunting season open. For some stupid reason I tried to take the time to let them know that it was bear season but since they were more knowledgeable than me they knew that you had to wear orange if something was open to be hunting. Ended up exchanging some not so friendly Words with them and will probably not be going back to that area which used to be awesome hunting but now is overrun with cyclists trying to get out of Seattle. But at least I got a good city folk vocab reminder, anything with a scope and a bipod is a sniper rifle and anything with a large clip is a machine gun. They must be voting for Biden since heís going to ban the AR 14s I guess

So late to the conversation but I was one of the clockum archery bull tag holders. If you were able to check your emails,  the game department gave you an option to return your permit to restore your points. It just had to be post marked within 7 days of your hunts opening day. I hunted pretty hard for 6 days with not hardly any bulls talking. But did see some true B&C bulls. I did return my permit, no regrets and wasnít willing to hang 18 points on the line for maybe 5 or 6 days of the bulls possibly getting fired up. I look at it as I got 6 days of practice run for when I get drawn next time plus through this forum I was able to broaden my horizons in the clockum that Iíve hunted for 20 years and thought I knew quite well.

You guys are being a little emotional. 7 days before the hunt everything was good no smoke no closures. So why would they offer that. So. actually that reacted as things unfolded. So if you had 18 years riding on it you would hope the game department would have the same compassion when you get drawn under the same conditions.

I don't want to get in it too much, but will mention...

It's also bull crap they closed DNR land to recreation. bull crap people still camped and hunted it and recreated on it and nobody enforced it or even talked to those camps that we heard from.

I did the exact same as Elkstalker. A good practice run. We hunted NFS land we've never set foot in before and camped where we were supposed to. I did call in a nice 6x6 for my buddy so we at least got 1 out of there.

I won't deny we got a gift. I am very appreciative of WDFW.

Hunted the tag, called in and killed a 6x6, saw B&C bulls, but they weren't bugling enough and points were gonna get burned so you returned it? Doesn't sound like the closures were tag ruining based on that. Not that you owe me an explanation, just how I'm reading what you guys are saying.

I don't blame anybody except WDFW for taking advantage of that BS decision. Gotta say though it's disingenuous to say the tag wasn't worth having with a 6 pt in camp and/or seeing B&C bulls.

DNR closure caused the hunters who wanted to do the right thing and obey the closure go to areas where they hadn't scouted or knew the area.  We could have easily parked where we wanted to on dnr land and hunt dnr land. But my buddy and his buddy (tag holders) wanted to be 100% legal and they chose not to hunt DNR land. Buddy had 21 pts and i believe other guy had 17.  Land closed on Tuesday before the hunt. Not alot of time to go and scout completely new areas.  Wdfw is not to blame for giving pts back. I think it was pretty cool of them.  If you wanna be mad, be mad at DNR for closing. Or be mad at the arsonists.  Or be mad just to be mad. I say good on wdfw, for once.

Dnr closed on tuesday. That gave 3-4 days wdfw could have made people choose ro hunt or get points back before the season. Hell they could have given 24 hours past the opener and made a phone line for hunters to request points back and not hunt. I do think wdfw tried to do the right thing allowing returns but it is absolutely asenine that they allowed people to hunt for 6 days and then return the tag. You should either get to hunt or get points back. Not both.

And if I not mistaken wdfw made the decision to give the hunters an opportunity to give tags back in while DNR land was still closed. Can we assume that wdfw had no clue when DNR was gonna open land back up. They could have extended the closure for the entirety of archery season.

I hope not. Would have hated if the Big Nasty thread ended with, "ended up calling it quits, not enough bugling"

 :chuckle:. So true..
Besides killing bulls on the last day is so stressful.

So much wrong with this situation IMO. Did you inform the WDFW that you hunted for 6 full days before you asked for your points back? You should've kept hunting because you'll likely never draw that tag again, ever. Even with 18 points. You didn't even hunt the good days of the season. Rookie move, you screwed yourself over big time.

Rough crowd.

Remind me  not to tell you all about the Washington goat tag my son got the whole season for and still got his points back.  LOL

I certainly don't fault the guys that followed the DNR closure and turned in their tags after 6 days.  I am not sure I like the option they were given.  I feel like if you got to hunt half of the season you should at the very least lose half of your points.

Even given the conditions, your odds of sticking it out and killing a bull IMO were way higher than your odds of ever pulling the tag again. Or at least they should have been.  :dunno:

Last year, a guy was 5x more likely to shoot an elk there than draw the tag with 18 points.  Even if the odds went down 75% this year you are still right.

WDFW seems to inflict random acts of violence and compassion.  My daughter drew a tag you had to wait for a call to hunt.  Call from WDFW never came, they wouldn't give points back.  She lost her points for a tag she never could hunt.

I do know this for sure.
I got an email from the WDW regarding returning my permit shortly after the DNR announcing the closure. It included a phone number as well as instructions. The instruction I got were that my returned permit would have to be post marked on or before 9/26/2020. My opening day for the permit is 9/28/2020.
I called number in the email and talked to the person who answered and he stated again that if I wanted to return the permit and get my points back the returned envelope with the permit in it had to be postmarked no later than 9/26/2020.

That is what I would expect the email and the company line to be.  You have to return it before the hunt and certainly not after you have tested the water for 6 days.

Well, do we know the points actually were restored after being able to hunt for six days? We know he THINKS that's the case. But maybe not.

I am curious about that as well.  I would love to see the actual email and how it is worded.
