Eastside Wa bull down Saturday morning by 7am. First bull called in, shot at 30 yards quartering away. He ran 30 yards and stood with his head down. 40 yard follow up shot opposite side, immediately collapsed him. Meat hanging at Nile meats by 130 pm. No smoke, no other hunters, great day.
Good luck to all .

Good work gentlemen! Really missing putting in work towards getting my first elk this year - come on smoke clear out! These success threads give me inspiration that you don't have to be Came Hanes to get it done.

Well done, gentlemen.

Lot of great elk so far
-
On the 3rd day of the season, this guy walked in on me to 22 yards and I let the Hoyt eat. Came in without making a sound other than the small twigs he stepped on. Wasn't the monster 6x6 I had at full draw for over a minute the day before with no shot, but I'm not one to pass up what I consider decent bulls
-
That’s a cool bull, congrats!!

All great animals, congrats to the hunters!

Been lurking in the shadows buglingbull? Lol! That's a cool bull. Wide! Great job everyone!

Hunted hard through smoke filled days last weekend and got one bull to bugle then he went quiet. Then yesterday my brother and I got out early and around 8am a large herd ran right into our area. Missed a long 70 yard shot early. Got a little down, pulled myself together and kept hunting into the wind. Had a staring contest with this spike for what seemed like forever, was able to cow call him into bow range, he strutted into a perfect broadside position and I split my 40/50 pins on the boiler room. Double lung’d him and he didn’t go 20. Thankful for my brothers help packing out. My second elk, first bull. I feel blessed.

Nice job! Spike? Not easy to hunt!

Waiting for more of those archery big bull tags??

Waiting for more of those archery big bull tags??
:yeah: seems slow this year
Slow year? There’s very little opportunity to harvest a big bull in the 300 gmu’s. A quick look at tag allocation and you’ll find there isn’t even 100 tags given out between Yakima and Ellensburg. Then take into account the success rate is probably some where between 30 to 50 percent. Elk hunting in this state is in desperate need of better management.

Early rifle cow season

Nice looking elk!
Spent 6 days this out there and came up empty (Probably done until late season). Hunted 560 (4days), 530 (1 day), 572 (1 day), and 510 (1 evening). Yesterday was the closest I came, being that 2 miles from the gate saw a herd of 10-14 elk on private land abutting the timber farm I was hunting.
Just wasn't seeing a ton of signs and I put many many miles on my bow this year so far.

Wednesday night, we got 8 cows and calves on cam at the wet meadow. They came in 15 minutes after I set the camera and left. >:( We set up there for the two following sunsets and nothing. Friday at 530AM, Carl and I were awaken by a bull bugling right outside our campers. Come 630, not a sign nor a hair. I'm hooked on cams. Next year's going to be a whole new program.

Yep, and it was still legal shooting by 25 minutes. I blew it big time.

Sometime's that's just the way it goes but sounds like a good hunt nonetheless. Two years ago I had a beast of a buck patterned (or so I thought) and when I checked cams after a few days he was using the particular path right after I left the stand every evening. I don't think he was bedded nearby either. I would get tired or bored and call it an evening despite having another 30 minutes of shooting light and twice he came by twenty minutes later!

Let's try and get this one back on track and keep the topic to 2020 elk harvest photos and comments related to those photos and hunts.

Best season yet! Went 3 for 5 at our camp.

I like the tag clips you posted! Something nostalgic about those old paper tags! They looks cool hanging off an old pair of antlers in the garage pile. I've seen some neat old metal tagged racks from way back as well. That stuffs cool! I used those same metal tags they used to issue for loading and sealing rail cars.

2020 Washington Roosevelt Herd Bull
My first elk
He had 3 cows with him. I was solo and called him close before his cows called my bluff. I charged in using the bull calling cows bugle which enraged him forcing him to fight. He circled me and a quick cow call got him to stop and turn broadside for a quick 28 yard shot through the brush for a double lung shot. Couldn't be happier with my first elk.

Good question. He had a decent body but was a pretty small main frame 5. I will check the teeth (still have it waiting to do a euro) My guess was 3.5 rather than regressing.

2020 DIY/Public Land Idaho, called him into 15 yards, frontal. 2 min later and 40 yards away he was down! All solo, what a trek. 2nd Archery Bull in 3 seasons, 3rd bull in 4 seasons (snuck a rifle bull in there), starting to look like I might know what I'm doing (but I seriously do not). Cow call, all the way in.
EDIT: *It looks like I'm the only one who is able to kill elk without a $150 Tight Spot quiver* :chuckle:

Congrats to all i love the pics. some good eats hitting the ground.

Wow what an amazing experience. Couldn’t be happier for my brother. I know I wouldn’t be able to sit on this monster bull for 1 1/2 hours if I had the gun in my hand. The way every thing played out made this hunt, well a hunt. 56 yards and he was able to sit still long and enough and quiet enough to make it happen. Good thing he had a Pro Guide Service, his little brother, ;) to put him on this amazing bull. Super happy for you bro!

Notched my White River bull permit on this guy. We hunted for three days on the opener, and something happened to my knee the last day. Rested for four days, before getting out again but the knee started flaring up right away. Had to lower my expectations. Not complaining, but we all have our own dreams and goals. Was bitter/sweet because I was able to combo deer/elk hunt with my cousin who also drew, and there are still 12 days left on this tag. But, he was DRT with one through the heart at 15 yards, only half a mile from the truck and he'll fill a pretty good void in the freezer, so that is good.

Some nice bulls in this thread
Alright y'all, I wasn't able to spend much time going after elk in early season muzzly and only saw cows (3+ unit). Didn't get an elk in Idaho either. Saw elk, just no bulls, and my sweet spot was going to be too sketchy to hike up into after it got snow. So, this isn't another "I'm not looking for your sweet spot thread" cause this is a 'PM me your sweet spot thread' :chuckle: Lat/long or 10, or even 8 digit grid works  Hopefully I'll find something legal for late season and can post here. Keep up the awesome pics!

CO 2020. Picked a unit when I first arrived here 4 seasons ago with draw odds that should allow me to hunt each year. I’ve spent a lot of time learning the area and it’s paid off. 3 for 4 so far and meat in the freezer.

I'm a medium sized guy, 5'7" and about 160 so maybe that makes him look bigger? He was long though.

First time hunting elk in Idaho. Not what I was looking for as I saw a couple shooters during archery season with no luck but went back during rifle season and got some meat for the freezers. I have my Idaho Panhandle A tag for 2021 so I will be looking to improve on it.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210107/ebf2b09be83a9a62daf3ded2286821e5.jpg)

Weird late season bull(?), was his plumbing normal? Thanks

Are you referencing the spike from bigbds61? Spikes frequently don't shed their velvet. Mine from Idaho also had velvet on the tips of both antlers. Dad's spike from last year didn't shed any velvet at all.

yep a very common thing.

Yup. Plumbing was all normal. He was the only bull with 15 to 20 cows.

Have taken a few, helped with more and looked at a bunch in the south east, have not seen it, ever, on the dry side. Thanks for the reply

My old boss in Wyoming defined a trophy as any animal you could drive to and load whole, congrats!
-
It was a 350 yard down hill drag in 12" of snow so really not too bad. Worse part was climbing up to him. It was a steep clearcut.
