Title: Winchester Model 94 30-30 Teddy Roose.
Post by: SeatoSummit88 on September 30, 2020, 11:38:25 AM
Hey Everyone,

So my Father-in-law inherited his dad's Winchester Model 94 Lever Action 30-30 Theodore Roosevelt Commemorative Rifle about 3 years ago (after he passed). My FIL and BIL do not hunt, neither did the grandfather. So this has been shot only a handful of times and has been in a hard case sitting in the closet. I'm interested in using it this for Late Rifle Buck in Nov. I had a couple different new game plans for this season, ground blind and tree stand hunting, so I figured this iron sight rifle might be a better option than my .300 Win Mag. I've been tangled up in a fogged out scope before, both on top of cuts and inside a s**t hole bottom, it's not fun trying to find your animal while they are moving away in the brush.  Would you all recommend shooting this rifle...or is this the collector type of rifle that we should keep cased up or mounted?  Personally, I don't believe there are any attachments to this rifle, that my FIL would not let me hunt with it (as long as I took care of it and cased up post season). It does have a 3x9 scope in the case (not mounted)(not sure of brand)... I have read prior threads on shooting 30-30's for deer, just was curious if any of you buffs had an opinion on this special edition...  Thank you!!!!

I don't know if everyone is the same, but when I beat brush in Western WA, stuff gets beat up and scratched.  One of the factors for my current rifle is that I don't care if it gets some love marks.  I try to take care, but sometimes it's impossible as you go sliding down a hill, trip over roots or push your way through a viney mess.

I wouldn't use any rifle that had any emotional attachments in that type of terrain, but that's me.

IMHO – a rifle that spends its life in a safe isn’t worth owning.  Clean it up, oil it up, sight it in and put it the use that it was made for.  A 30/30 is more than capable of taking down a blacktail and they are joy to hunt with.

Thanks guys, I've seen a lot of replies from you both in prior guns/ammo threads, so appreciate the insight... I'll evaluate the level of love he has for this rifle and make the call. I agree, this beauty is not being fully used to its capacity. It belongs resting on my shoulder and having a 130-150 grain round chambered ready to harvest a nice buck! Will update if I am able to get her out into the woods!

I've killed a lot of whities with that gun. Great gun for tight cover. Take it out and use it. You'll make it happy!

Its gonna get scratched.  Put it on tge wall with a commemorative plate.  If FIL gives it to you shoot it.

Enjoy it while u still can like Teddy would have!

U know how many TR, John Wayne, Annie Oakley commemorative 94’s that Winchester and others have turned out? Just another run-of-the-mill piece with roll-stamped “engraving” and a fancy box to keep the knickknack collectors happy, “oh man it’s gonna be worth big bucks someday!...” :chuckle:
