Title: Chewuch Quality Deer
Post by: CA2017 on October 23, 2020, 01:22:11 PM
I was lucky enough to draw a chewuch quality deer tag this year. I have spent  some time in the unit A few years ago. I am just curious if anybody has spent some time in there this year and what your opinion is on deer population? I have heard it is really bad over there. Hopefully we get some snow up high to push them down.

You shouldn’t have a issue, there will be plenty of deer running around for you to check out.

Might be a few less deer to choose from as all this snow this last weekend of the season along with the later season are helping harvest rates.

I just got back, I was fortunate enough to have killed a big 4 by 5, 388 lbs and thats not counting the pile of guts, got close to 250lbs of meat :yike:. Was in a migration route and he came down with 7 other bucks 2 days before the storm hit, 2 were bigger than him, we were over 5 miles from any road and where we were it was 6 degrees. Its not as good as it was 20 or more years ago, not even close but as Ive always said you can still bump into a buck at any time, just get off the beaten track, its a huge unit, the higher you can get, the colder you get and the more miserable you are is where you will see the big boys, just my opinion and :twocents:

250#? Dang that’s a little less then I got off a mature bull elk this fall. That must be a record size deer by .. 100#?

OP. Have you been to Chewuch in the last couple years?  We've been there looking around during late hunt season (just from the roads) a couple years, but didn't see anything worth burning a quality tag.   Report back, love to hear how it goes for you!!

And a 400lb deer? Lets see pics of that thing!

This isn't my thread, I may start one later about this. There are people who seen this deer, some are on here, he was a big ole boy to say the least. To the OP, good luck, I will be in touch.

Big old mules are cool. But what you killed must be some moose deer hybrid. Anything 0ver 100# would be incredible. 250? Call the papers!

Do you pack a scale with you or did you drag it 5 miles field dressed to weigh it?

To the OP, I was over in this unit last year for my own personal amusement and saw a number of bucks I would be happy to notch a tag on. I guess it does depend on your personal preference. Most that I would consider shooters were big heavy typical 4x4s. I didn't get up early, and didn't hike around at all (in that particular unit).

A friend had your tag and put it on a heavy 4x2, 30 inches wide, opening day.

If you are looking for the book then it will be a hard hunt. If you are looking for a deer that would make your heart pound in regular season you will probably find him.

Mule deer can and do weigh 400 lbs. That is freakishly huge compared to what we normally shoot but its not unheard of. I believe Big mac but we do need some pictures! just because I love looking at huge mule deer  :chuckle:

Agree, and there are documented cases. Heck one quick google search shows there was a buck shot in Ontario that dressed at 431lbs on certified scales. I would still love to see a picture of the tank.

I had spent some time in the unit back in 2014.. I seen a few great bucks and connected with one that scored in the 180s but not the amount of deer I had heard of people seeing.. fast forward to 2018 I spent a little time in the unit and only seen a handful of deer.. few smaller bucks. It really seemed like it was on the decline then. Going into it with  no expectations and see what we can turn up.

:chuckle:, Its just a big ole buck, not an alien deer, or a laboratory experiment, just a big deer, we've probably killed around 10 or so that Ive personally seen over my 55years plus of hunting that are in the 400-450lbs range on the hoof, the area we have hunted for the last 100 years is an area known for big body genetics. As for 250lbs of meat? We butcher our own and try not to waste for respect to the animal, we got 21 one gallon freezer bags of cubed meat out of this guy, all bags weighed at about 10-12lbs each, we get the rib meat, neck meat and everything else we can for summer sausage and pepperoni, the rest for burger and breakfast sausage, the only things that didn't get cubed was the loins and the backstraps. As for dragging 5 miles, yep kinda, 4 of us for about 2 miles all down hill on snow(from the previous storm about a week earlier) then a horse the rest of the way.....Now let this fella have his thread back, if I feel like it I may post a couple pictures on my own thread :chuckle: :chuckle:...Sorry OP, good luck and Pm sent.

A buck from the unit the OP is asking about is more than relevant to this thread and now he gave you  permission! Let's see him!

I had a big bodied 2x3 knees knocked, no head, gutted and skinned was 189 at the butchers. I got back 138 pounds of meat.

The butcher said it was the biggest body he had seen that year.

If you figure "real world" close to 2/3rds of a deer is not meat. To get 200 lbs of meat, my guess that deer would have to weight well over 500 on the hoof.
I would find that a hard one to believe without seeing the pictures.

Personally I feel the meat is the trophy so keep pretty close track. Best I have done was 103 pounds of unpacked meat off a mule deer. It was 205 hanging, gutted, no forelegs, head and hide on. The deer was head shot so zero meat waste and I am very dedicating to getting every scrap I can. Butcher my own, also a sausage maker.

I always figure you get half the hanging weight for a deer that is shot well. I have always gone by the 1/3 of live is meat assumption. Though I feel it overestimates the guts.

I can see 388 but 250 is very surprising, but maybe these larger bucks are proportioned differently. I don't know, this is the closest I have gotten to seeing one!

You get roughly 40% of live weight off a beef steer, which are obviously bred to maximize meat yield.  I’m sure a deer is less than that.

Love this hunt. Helped on it a couple times. Not what it once was as far as numbers but it only takes one deer!  The big migrators are a whole different species than the local bucks.  TheY will be much darker in hair color.  Easy to tell

Oh for gosh sakes, the buck was 388lbs hanging with no guts, heart, liver or lungs, still had the hide, head and legs on, put all the inside stuff back in and we figured him at 420-450lbs. Man I didn't think this was that big a deal, sure its a big deer but the majority of our bucks are in the 250-350Lbs range, and YES I posted about 50 pictures(out of hundreds that we have) a few years ago and a handful of those were 400lb plus deer, I got many compliments and appreciated every one of them, then I was tipped off that many of my pictures were being copied, why, I have no idea, but I can only imagine, I pulled them all down, I don't need to prove anything, Im about as straight of a shooter as you will find. I may post a picture of this buck or I may not, I have 21 1 gallon freezer bags in my freezer right now, each bag weighs 10-12lbs, I also have 2 backstraps, liver, heart and loins in the freezer, total weight of all is 246lbs....Like I said we butcher our own and don't waste, when we were done all that went over the bank was the vulture picked rib cage, the clean picked legs/hip, neck bone and back bone, we left the gut pile on the hill(30-40lbs) about one bag of bloodshot area went for dog food.....CA2017, I will stay in touch

I remember those old pictures you posted, and appreciated them. Always look forward to your mule deer input on this site.

Like wise I’m just curious I didn’t know mule deer got that big. I shot what was considered a really big mule deer in Wyoming by experienced guys and it was around 90# of meat. So one that’s 2.5x as big? It’s very interesting. A mule deer the size of a bull elk. I just hadn’t ever heard of such a thing.

Good luck on that hunt. Pay close attention to bigmacc's posts. I knew the guy that used to own The Outdoorsman in Winthrop. His name was Victor Moss. He had tons of picture of great bucks taken out of 218 that he said were taken up high in the nasty weather on migration routes. Pretty sure some of his mounts went to Sunmountain resort after his death. Post pics I bet you're gonna do well!

Re 400+ pound deer, yes they are real. Old timers in my circles refer to those big bucks as “mule bucks”. Not mule deer, or muleys, or big bucks, but “mule bucks”. I know where to find mule bucks, but they do not come easy or often.

True. I was probably too young back then to have noticed the advantages. Vic was a nice guy. I first met him on my birthday probably less than 10 years old. As it turned out we shared the same birthday and so whenever I was in the area on my birthday I would stop by and hang out in his store for a while.

When they dwarf mature does that are 30 yards closer than them, you know they're big. Great picture of a great animal Bone.

Thanks bigmacc.  I'm newer to deer hunting so those numbers seemed unbelievable compared to the deer I've seen.  Cool to know there are some monsters out there.

Good luck to the Chewuch Quality tag holders.  I'm envious.

This story is of an Idaho buck that my pops killed not a WA buck. Never got weighed live or hanging but got weighed after butchering. 275# of cut and wrapped meat. Scored 263 and change and was 42" wide. Aged at 11 years old. This is not a tale or BS

I personally have never killed a huge bodied buck, my sons first buck at the age of 12 had a bigger body than any I have ever killed :)

I can’t remember where I saw it, it may have been on here, but it looked like probably a 2.5-3.5 year old buck standing with a tank of a buck. The big one absolutely dwarfed the younger buck. There are some absolute giant deer out there.

I've only ever seen one in person that could qualify as a "jumbo". The weird part: it's rack was not all that impressive. It was with another large buck that was smaller in body size but had a very large set of antlers. And by jumbo I mean the body looked like donkey!

That a if buck for sure , I call bull on 250 lbs of meat sorry but that scale is off ! 35 years ago I saw a huge okanogan Mulie they killed up by night hawk on a huge chunk of private . He dwarfed the other bucks and hung close to 250 on the hook . A 350 lb. buck is gonna yield 120 -140 of meat , many 160 if you left the fat on him .

Am i the only one who can’t see the picture of the big buck?

To the OP-i had the tag in 2018. Weather was mild and numbers are down. Still a very fun hunt. I ended up killing the 4th biggest buck i saw. I think it was on the 7th or 8th day of hunting.

Also if things up there are the same as down here in Oregon (w biggs unit) the rut is on strong already.

Might as well step in this mess,

Bigmacc, there are many of us who have never shot a 400 lb Muley, after hunting for over 30 years in the same areas you are talking about.

Some of us have never shot a 200” muley while hunting the same areas you are talking about.

Some of us have. Ever shot a 40” wide muley while hunting the same areas you are talking about.

Does that mean they do not exist?

Hardly.

The last year I hunted the Methow, I was about two miles in an area we have hunted every year for 30 years. Usually when trying to recover from the opening weekend excitement.
The kind of area you hunt when you are seriously hurting from previous days, but you don’t want to waste a day by staying in camp, so you pick a well known (to you) spot that you can work into, but still have a shot at a decent buck.

I sat down on a draw that had been burned a few years earlier, and proceeded to eat my lunch. While eating, I glassed every bush in that draw hoping to see something but not really expecting to see much. After about 30 minutes, I stood up to continue around the mountain.
Then something exploded out of the brush about 150 away.  :o

The largest buck I have ever seen, easily twice as wide as his ears, humongously tall, double droptine (my holy grail) was bounding away. I had just enough time to throw my rifle up and see how massive this buck was as he disappeared over the finger.
This buck was by far the biggest I have ever seen in all my years of hunting, and he was bedded right in front of me and I did not see him because I did not expect to see him.  :bash:

Before that day If anyone would have told my a buck like that could be found there, I would have laughed at them. We had killed dear there, but nothing close to that buck.

So my point is, while hard to comprehend bucks of the size you describe for those of us who have settled for 1/2 that,
Under no circumstances does that mean I question your integrity.

It is more of “what the heck am I doing wrong when I blow a chance at a buck of a lifetime?, in a place that I least expect it”

So ya it is hard for some of us to comprehend a buck of that size, but that’s on us not you.

I know Bigmacc and I got called *censored*ters which for me is OK. Doesnt hurt my feelings at all. It is hard to believe there are Bucks that big out there when most of us shoot 2-4 year old bucks

I talked to my mom for some clarification, my dad is no longer with us. She said 270# of cut and wrapped, they cut their own. She said this was with Heart, Liver, ribs and all made into burger as they already had a Bull, Cow and Calf in the freezer and it was such an old buck. Not sure what the organs, ribs and beef fat would add up to but thats what she said. My dad killed a bunch of big bucks, body and antler wise. He probably had 20 that I will never top. He only entered this one in B/C because some buddies ,made him. I know he won widest Muledeer contest one time where he had a 41" typical 4 pt. He won a Winchester 30-30. He said it wasnt too special if a buck as it didnt have much mass or character :)
Every animal he killed prior to 1956 when he killed this one was stolen out of his barn in Idaho in 1957 when he moved to Seattle to work for Boeing. Monster Bucks, Bulls and Antelope. The only one he brought to Seattle was this one. He and his 2 bothers killed some monsters in the 40's and 50's.

Just wanted to give my perspective on comments and sorry I was part of getting this off topic. I have no doubt of my dads claims because I never heard him stretch the truth or BS. If he said it, it happened

all of us are infallible. I don't see any issues with being slow to believe an internet claim of 248 lbs of meat off a mule deer when every scientific study would question it.

It doesn't make the person who claimed it a liar, he could be accurate, he could be mistaken.

Bottom line is that it would likely make this buck the largest ever killed. We see records being broken regularly and none of them have bodies of this size. In general I believe it to be healthy to be slow to believe what someone posts on the internet.

That said, the poster is clearly a man of experience and has forgotten more than most of us will ever know about mule deer. Its unfortunate that our disagreement over the pounds has to taint the entire thing.

I was curious so I googled “heaviest Mule Deer buck”

Some real pigs

REAL SLOBBERKNOCKERS: THE 4 HEAVIEST DEER OF ALL TIME
- Sunday September 23, 2018 - Daniel Schmidt

There was a day not so long ago when deer hunters across North America were absolutely fascinated with big bucks.

No, not big racks — big bucks. Huge, giant, monstrous creatures. Or, as the old-timers called them, “real slobberknockers.”

Antlers were adored, but they were almost secondary when it came to describing a buck’s status. “What did he weigh?” was often the first question asked of a successful hunter. This infatuation hasn’t died completely. A buck’s hog-dressed weight is still a badge of honor for hunters in the Northeast, Upper Great Lakes and Canada.

GnarlesLEETIFFGary
Lee Lakosky shot a buck he called ‘Gnarls Barkely’ a few years ago. This deer tipped the scales at nearly 300 pounds on the hoof. (Photo: Lee and Tiffany Lakosky of The Crush TV)
From what we can gather, the heaviest whitetail ever shot was killed by a bow-hunter, John Annett of Ontario, in 1977. The deer field dressed 431 pounds on government-certified scales. That would have given it an estimated live weight of more than 540 pounds. However,  reports indicate the buck was butchered before Canadian authorities could inspect it.

Second place seemingly belongs to a 402-pound Minnesota buck killed by Carl Lenander Jr. in 1926.  Conservation officials estimated the live weight at 511 pounds.

This giant buck was shot near Gaspe Quebec in Fall 2005. It field-dressed at 260 pounds, making its live weight well near the 300-pound mark.
This giant buck was shot near Gaspe Quebec in Fall 2005. It field-dressed at 260 pounds, making its live weight well near the 300-pound mark.
Third place would go to a Maine buck killed by Horace R. Hinckley in 1955. Hinckley reportedly spent three days searching for a scale large enough to properly weigh his buck. With a Maine Sealer of Weights witness present, the buck officially tipped the scales at 355 pounds, giving it a live weight of 451 pounds. Hinckley’s buck had a 28-inch neck girth and a 56-inch chest girth.

Fourth place goes to a 321-pound buck killed in Bayfield County, Wisconsin, in 1938. We don’t know the hunter’s name, but the weight was verified. Fifth place would have to go to a buck killed in New York in 1946. That deer officially weighed 291 pounds dressed.

These rankings are open for debate. While researching this topic with my friend Keith McCaffery, a retired deer research biologist, we found several mentions of heavier deer. However, none of those weights were verified. Included in that list are a 1907 Wisconsin buck that allegedly weighed 437 pounds dressed, and a 1924 Wisconsin buck that weighed 386 pounds.

I’m laughing my ass off at a bunch of you guys. I saw and photographed, that means got within 40 yards of more big Washington bucks yesterday That are being hunted currently on public ground than some of you naysayers have seen your whole life.   :chuckle:  Should we throw some stones, or whip out a measuring tape.

Were your comments worth it?  Do you feel better?  The guy put up a a photo of a gigantic deer not that he had to prove himself.  And even if he was exaggerating (not saying he was), who gives a *censored*.

There’s some post on here somewhere of some Washington giant that scores 193 inches.  I have probably 10 racks in my pile that I haven’t even posted pics on here of bucks I’ve harvest that are bigger.  193 inches my ass.   It doesn’t mean I crapped on the guys parade.

Is the hunt over? Looks like some gnarly weather going on...

Thanks for the help everybody. After passing on a handful of bucks I ended up shooting a nice 4 point that scores in the upper 160s. The hunt was a lot of fun. They were calling for snow and I wasn’t too sure if it did snow that we could make it back to where we seen all the deer.

Bigmacc,

I know you have seen plenty of bucks like him. I havent been so fortunate. Thanks for the reply

What a beautiful buck!
I could not even imagine trying to drag that bad boy a few miles back to camp.

Remember though zwickeyman, bucks ain’t built that big anymore, dang, can’t find the wink emoji thing, that’s an awesome buck👍. Sorry , thought I’d come back here and ruffle a few more feathers😆.
