Post by: Norman89 on November 07, 2020, 05:29:09 PM
The time is upon us lady's and gents! My season is well underway with the same farms having beaver problems and testing some new floating colony's I set out today on the local lake. Helping out frankenyota get going is fun as well. here's some pics since a thread is useless without them 🤣 no matter the torrential downpour we had today my 75$ trapping boat was kicking along the only person on the lake had a nice chat with the local game warden at the launch who thought the floating colony's were a great idea

I placed them in dense second and third growth forest with a thick canopy at least 50-100 yards from a timber edge so far no problems with Ravens just the darn long tail cat variety ripping them out of tree and packing them off deeper into the bush

With how much highwater I see in my local rivers creeks and lakes I think if it works it may produce just as well as underwater colony traps iv been using for years since I don't need to spend the time locating runs and dens and setting accordingly I'll take some pics tomorrow when I check there is a lot of cuttings up and down the outflow of the lake into the creek that I set on. Water that is usually 3 feet deep is near five right now so I figured wait half the season for the water to come down and find the dens or try out the floaters. It never hurts to try something new and Mike mattaney (hoping I spelled his name right) has already proved a floating colony works very well there are videos on youtube of his trap in action and i finally got a good look at his design thanks to trapper john and frankenyota. His design is a bit more complicated then this but you don't know till you try. I'm sure the design will evolve as I find ways to improve the catch, sames as my next beaver/otter/ bobcat cages will be collapsible if I can figure out the last piece of the puzzle iv been wracking my brain on the last 2 years :bash:

:yeah: but if you are still having trouble you can  slide a feed sack over the carcass like a sock.   Leave the bottom end open so a cat can get to the bait. Birds can't work it from above because of the sack.

I will not take credit for that idea. That is an old trick. First one who told it to me was George Sovie probably 25 years ago. There are few ideas that someone before us hasn't already tried.

Those old tricks are practically new tech to all us younger trappers since there are few people to learn from around here, not to many old-time trappers around that's why I always chit chat with them any chance I get always get some great information and ideas!

Well it's pretty easy to get permission on a beaver spot when you drive down the road and see where the land owner has been breaking a dam open to drain his back 40 and stacking all the brush on the road so he can move it with his tractor so after meeting him and shaking hands I placed three traps out on this new creek(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20201128/3e6e11b4e290fc2558d09fb3a9a3d405.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20201128/ea6ec33a3af8276582b9c96ae15393bb.jpg)

Trap set in place with minor blocking off and dive sticks. Owner said he has been battling the beaver since he bought the place in February so they are very active rebuilding dams he opens up every weekend. Between driving home to get traps and getting back (about 30minutes) in full daytime they had already placed some sticks on the dam(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20201128/73fc2a2cc209b17c25ae217789318b64.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20201128/8aeb41afb105fc47639262389f404bef.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20201128/d5c1d1c83fdf666096896e6665b050f0.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20201128/0c2e5b75756f85d332195b9a3eab4939.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20201128/e246b8f0f30de15f2891584e55e67d7d.jpg)

We'll figure it's time, into my fifth season I set my first bobcat trap. Brought my oldest son with me to help out. Cage is set on a bait stations that had been hit hard for a while now. Let me son setup a small cage for stinkers incase they want to be little bait thrives and he brushed it in himself so cross my fingers for a cat this season. Have five more cages to finish building so I can setup a short cat line this year and I'll pair each cat trap with a small cage for skunk baited both with beaver meat(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20201226/2de9f971b90b7af8462122b9195fba75.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20201226/6bdc11a3084f6e2359a977abf28b998c.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20201226/895fca4a1007beef2132f80a51b494c3.jpg)

Back in the '80's when we got a skunk, we'd use what the old guys called a "push stick".  It was whatever length stick you could find handy, and tape the plunger end of a syringe filled with acetone to it.  If you took your time, and were slow and gentle, they wouldn't spray...they'd just go to sleep.  Don't try it on a big boar 'coon though!  It won't work, but will be a lesson on the term, "trap circle".

Nothing yet on the cat line so I expanded with another cat cage a few miles up the road after some odd smells caught my attention coming through the window. From what I can tell something got a hold of a skunk and tore it to pieces, fur was scattered for 20 yard circle or more and the whole area reeks of skunk(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210101/9de57d1f5e73a64401e1a3988c622e49.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210101/b25a485b300ce9023d12d83bd548beb9.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210101/e28bcedcdaa18d7e88ae5276f6c4c5aa.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210101/86878d3be0032cf09b974a99fe2ad674.jpg)

Upon further inspection I do believe this Beaver was run over by a car I caught him within 200 yards of a major road and after skinning he had a broken front shoulder open wounds on his back in multiple places and the bent tail also looks like open wounds on the top of his hindquarters here's a picture of the hide so far and I'm really thinking this hide is not worth saving I think there's too much damage that I'll be able to do anything with it

All beaver pelts have value. Its just that in this market most beaver will go as hatters. Hatters are technically bought per pound. Last year hatters went roughly $9 per pound. Im guessing this year hatter will be $6 per pound. Most holes, rubs, slights don't effect the price on a hatter.
Your beaver isnt worth much, but it's worth something.

Should I try to show them shut?

No, wont change anything. If anything you could close holes with a couple nails. But again, with a hatter, holes dont matter. They are buying the skin for the fur to make felt out of. The leather will not be used.

Couple cat/skunksets I got out late last night. Trying a trick from the wild north on youtube and instead of wiring my bait directly to the back door of the cage I wired it onto a small stick. I cross it through the cage wire and shove one end in the ground, keeping the bait suspended in air about 10" past the trigger. I also used a small chunk of fur that I dobbed some castor onto. Nice to grab a cage and a bait stick and a small hatchet and be able to do a hole set(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210115/b0e4693fb28082ec6efe7b2748b973fb.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210115/c4f15704e4e7e34fe279638c0b40f1d9.jpg)
