Lots of hunters, lots of fog, miserable roads, been chained up every day and not lots of deer.

After passing deer after deer on my incentive permit I dumped this busted up buck this morning.

I’m out of deer tags now.

I might but I’m guessing no. The bar has been set. I usually set it and since 2011 I’ve won the hat twice and came in second 4 times.

I hope my kid wins it. I got her to 80 yards from a nice 4c4 that was breeding a doe. No shot. They spooked and ran. Good times. First day of decent weather

Roads are finally decent but still tricky in places. I still have chains on. Still lots of hunters and not many deer. Definitely a down year for mature deer here this year.

Brutal year on vehicles. One burned up transmission, couple broken chains, broken brake line from chains coming off, bad power brake booster on another truck, bad cv joint on one truck, lots of scratches, broken fender flare and one crease in a door. Costly year for sure.

Got home last night after being there since opened. Saw three legal bucks whole time! We took one of them. Lots of 2 points! Must have taken everything legal in rifle General season for locals. The mountain bucks aren’t there! Other than fog, couldn’t ask for better conditions.

Spent the day there yesterday. Found a pretty big buck right off the bat that had a large gaping wound in its left rear quarter. By the number of guys in the area he was in, I’m assuming we weren’t the only ones who knew about him.  We watched him bed and then my buddy started to make a stalk on him. 30 minutes in we realized there was another guy already pretty well invested in a stalk of his own, so we backed out. The deer ended up spooking. We came back through there maybe 3-4 hours later to find 5 different guys in the draw he was in in the morning. Not sure if he was back again or if they were expecting him back. Tons of people. Made me realize why I never got into bowhunting the Swakane. I bet there are places where there aren’t crap tons of people so I guess you just have to find those places.  Tough to see but big frame, 3 on his right side and 4 on his left along with a fresh wound on that left rear quarter. Hoping it wasn’t a hunter that shot him in the ass. Tough to say for sure.

I have been hunting archery up there for 20 years. Some people up there shouldn’t be bow hunting. Good for you on backing out. Way to many people see you making a stalk and they will jump in front of you. I used to love the hunt. Not so much now cause of the other hunters.

I know.

I had a spot I only saw one guy there in 6 years. Usually see 10 to 20 bucks a day there. The year they opened up for Does I saw 2 guys there. The next year Does went to permit. All the guys hunting Does the year before were back hunting bucks and I saw 6 guys in that spot. Its never been the same.

It kind of reminds me back in the 80's when they gave out hundreds of Doe tags in Blewett, for multiple years in a row. It has never recovered from that. Killed most of all the local Derer. Our Game Dept manages people not animals

Buy I digress because we all know that :bash:

I was up Swakane Canyon road for the upland game opener with my son (also snowed for the first time this year) begin squirrel moment we ran into a lone hunter and were asked to join him and his dog. It was my sons second time bird hunting and his first time to get to hunt with a dog. Had a great time and the hunter who invited us to join him was John Kruse the host of Northwestern Outdoors Radio. End squirrel moment, the rifle hunters were as thick as the bird hunters. We had several rifle hunters stop by our camp (West end of release site where canyon narrows) all asking if we had seen any deer, several said they had seen bucks but with the snow didn't want to make a stalk up the steep snow covered draws
LAZY  LAZY LAZY
. I saw a doe in the road on our way out by the orchard and that was the only deer we saw. Not surprised with all the hunters. It's been almost 10 years since I hunted that canyon for archery, we saw 24 deer in just 2 draws and I found my first shed. I believe the fire has had an impact on the habitat effecting population as well.

Still plenty of deer to be found in the swakane unit in general, just really have to be willing to put the boots on and rack up the miles to get to them. Got our buck this year and the area we were in had alot of hunters but they weren't venturing far from the local roads and draws they could glass in from the road. Hiked a few miles and got into the beautiful quite area that always seems to hold decent animals. Had a great time and made some great memories. That's what counts. Sure the roads weren't the best and the hunting pressure was there. Just have to figure out how to use it all to your advantage. That's what my dad tought me years ago and I still try and apply that each year. Hope everyone had fun out there and put some meat in the freezer. Happy holidays to everyone.

Congrats on the buck!

As far as the lazy hunters with slick snowy hills.......Just realize that some of that country has lots of grassy steep slopes. Put a little bit of wet or slippery snow on it and it becomes very dangerous.
Many moons ago when I was much younger, I killed a deer 7/8ths of the way to the top. left side going up, directly above the orchard at the bottom. Coming down was incredibly scary. I slipped/slid/fell/tumbled 200' multiple times, thought I was gonna die. Actually dug foot holes with my knife in several areas. Will NEVER do that again in snowy times!!!

Microspikes are an equalizer for the exact conditions your describing Nock. I haven't been into swakane for a few seasons, but when I hunted it alot I never left the rig without them. Some days they would be on all day.

So it's official,  I won the hat with "Elliot" the busted up deer.  Waiting on the skull being done with Bugs and Bones.

2011 was the first year of the hat, I came in second by inches.  It was a good year, three bucks and one doe from our camp of 9 hunters.

2012 I came in second on a technicallity.  First year hunter shot a doe.  Everyone was breaking camp and I went up to help my buddy look for blood on a last minute shot the night before.  No blood but on the hike down we came across a 4 point that I drilled.  Got back to camp and most were gone along with the hat.  I knew I would win it another year so I let the rookie take it home.

2013 my wife won it with a doe tag.  Only deer our group took that year.

2014 I shot an absolute tank of a buck.  Old warrior with heavy horns and crab claws everywhere.  The next day my buddy shot a 155" buck.  Only two deer taken but one for the books.

2015 on the last day I shot what I thought was a 4x4, when I got up to him one of his points was busted off.  By the time I got back to camp there was a rumor of my buddy's kid shooting a 3x3 with eyeguards.  It was a great deer and he beat me because of the broken off point.  No worries I would win it at some point but this year I was once again the bridesmaid.

2016 "Finally" on the last day I shot what was my smallest deer at that point and it was the only deer, the pink hat was finally mine.

2017 was one of the best seasons ever.  Only one deer shot but it was my 17 year old daughter hunting for her first time with the big kids at Swakane.

2018 no deer were harmed.

2019 my buddy shot "elliot" part one.  I had a great opportunity at a 160" deer and missed on the last day.  I had taken a hard summersaulting tumble the day before and obviously knocked my sight out of whack and didn't know it until the egregious miss.

2020 brought the hat home again with drop tine "Elliot".  Only deer taken again.

My wife's family has been hunting swakane since the late 70's.  It is a shell of what it once was. 10% success is dismal.  There are way easier areas to hunt but it is a family tradition so we continue to go every year.

I'll post some photos when I get a chance.

We used to do a t shirt for the biggest deer. The hat was my wife’s idea in 2011 because she thought she was going to win it. She had a doe tag. She got the doe but not the hat, three bucks shot that year. We decided to pass the hat each year. The winner gets to wear it like a badge of honor to every family event. My wife’s family is big and there is a birthday party almost every month, or graduation, engagement party or holiday party.

It’s a great tradition.

We only went by there on day one.  Coming up from Cashmere it was plowed all the way up.  Once you took the right to get to where we would hunt below you and continue on to your camp was deep snow.  We made it the first day but as traffic increased we didn't want to hassle with people not chaining up until it was too late.  We went up mills the rest of the season.  That wasn't much better but it was bad all the way up so people used the plowed road instead and didn't hunt the mills side as much.

There was nobody in your camp on day one.  There were people camped right in some of the good hunting spots.  Spoiler alert, when you camp right where the deer are they move until you break camp.

There was tons of snow that we had hoped for but not many deer.  Next year we are praying for deer instead of snow.  We thought praying for snow would mean deer.  That didn't work out.

Reviving the old swakane pink hat thread. Last year I had an entiat archery tag so I didn’t hunt swakane or have a chance at the hat.

This year I was back and tagged out on day two. Unfortunately it didn’t hold up and my buddy shot a bigger buck on day four. Second place again.

11 years of competition
1 year no winner tag soup for everyone

last year I tagged out in the entiat and didn't hunt swakane

That leaves 9 years that I have been competing

2 wins and 6 second places (one of those second places i actually had the big deer but gave the hat to a kid that had shot his first deer)

The only year I didn’t get first or second was the year my daughter got a buck, couldn’t bring myself to knock her out of the top spot.

The deer hunting isn’t anything like it used to be but we keep going back because of the tradition. It’s just what we do in November.

The roads were pretty bad this year. We had to replace a right side front drive axle on one of the trucks in camp.

I’m not sure if the roads are really getting worse or I’m just getting old. I’m guessing getting old is a bigger factor because the hills seem steeper as well.

Not sure where tibbits is but I can say the hunting all over that unit is significantly worse than it was 8 years ago. The only reason we still go is that my wife’s family has been doing it since the late seventies. There are way better units to hunt than this one but they don’t have the same history.

Thanks Pman. Always thrilled when I can get one with my bow. It’s certainly getting tougher the older I get. At 51 the hills seem to have gotten steeper and the roads getting there seem worse as well. Pretty sure the only change is I’m just older and complain more, same steep hills and treacherous roads.
