The deer was a dink,  the pack out was on gravel logging roads.  Not short but not really long.  For me it's epic because its my first true solo kill and pack out. Was just as thankful to get back to the truck though!

This wasn't my heaviest but was my longest. 8.5 miles coming out from the high hunt with camp, most of a bear and his hide in the rain. Pack weighed about 75# I think. I'll try and round up a few more.

Moose with a small badlands pack.  Sure wish I had invested in better pack before this trip.

This is the heaviest load I've had on my back. Dont know what it was weighed but it was north of 100#. Obvious elk head, full hide from a mature bull, bag of scrap meat that probably weighed 20#. Only 2 miles, all downhill. Felt good to drop that pack on the tailgate.

My buddy packing our MT bull in 19. With how many warm clothes we had, we both were right around 95ish lbs. It was 2 when we started hunting that morning.

That snow has frozen, thawed, and refrozen several times, so it was essentially an ice skating rink. Can't count the number of times we fell. Hard to see how steep it was, but yikes.

Funny how fondly hard packouts are looked back on. (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210124/cf25f785802a48d6473bf844f4e14dea.jpg)

Mule deer from Idaho. Killed in the head of a steep rocky nasty canyon. Biggest bodied mule deer I've ever killed. Tried to get all the meat in the pack but couldn't do it. Took as much as I could pack, probably close to 100# pack with the 25# of gear that was already in it. That was a very uncomfortable pack out.

Moose in Alaska

Itís a whole new level of physical challenge. We made the mistake of shooting one across the canyon. We were in an area where you had leave the bone in by regulations. Three 10 or 11 hour days and we had him back to where a plane could land.

First trip out of three with my buddy. This was just the rack, straps, loins; plenty  heavy for this old fart. That first trip out was straight up through an alder jungle. Started out right before dark and finally hit the trail by the truck at dawn. Beat down like a clown Charlie Brown  :o

No pics of mine but one year so that I didn't have to make two trips I carried out camp and a boned out deer.  Total pack weight was 110 per the bathroom scale after I got home.  I thought I was pissing and moaning too much.  Had to have help getting under the pack.   From camp site to the trailhead was 5.5 miles, luckily a slight downhill grade.

So I do not take pictures much at all, and never thought of taking one of a pack out. But my heaviest was a solo elk hunt, killed a big  mature bull. 3.5 miles from camp it took 2 hrs to get there from camp empty, had a outfitter ligned  up to pack the meat out if I got one. Cell reception was poor at best so I got a text out to the packer hoping to get out a day early because there was a huge snow storm coming in the day I was scheduled to come out. Not hearing from him because of the very few spots to get reception. I had already done 2 packs out and I went in for the next pack, it had rained all night and the whole hike in, I had crossed 2 creeks to get in to where the bull was. But you could pick tour way across without the water going over your boots, so since I had little communication with the packer and didnít know if he text me on the last pack i took both hind quarters in the trip. And that was the last of the meat. No idea how heavy it was but I assuming with a mature bull 2 deboned hind quarters would be around 150. I was as high of elevation you could get in the area and by the time I got back to the first creek I had crossed it had rose so much it was unbelievable I unbuckled me pack just in case I fell in I could just take it off. When I got to the second creek crossing it was way to high to not go over my boots. I just unbuckled my pack and went for it, it was about knee high but I was only about a half mile from camp at that time so I just fillled my boots and went for it. And I had zero contact from the packer. So it was kinda all for nothing. Insane pack out though, across a rock slide and through 2 rushing creeks which atleast 150#.

My heaviest was 107 lbs of camp and bear meat, hide, and head this past fall. About 3 miles down to the truck. I'm a lean 160 lbs: the pack was 2/3 of my body weight.

Picture is of the steepest part of the ridge I packed a bull up and out of Wenatchee Canyon. The top of the ridge in that picture is rather steep. Packed the meat, hide, and horns out myself, except for one 30# load my BIL hauled. That canyon has an earned reputation of being rather difficult.

Fine, Iíll make it publicly known I packed the hooves! 😂 only because Iím an idiot and seem to always forget my kill kit and use a pocket knife.

Last years quartered on the hoof Mule deer, few miles and a few thousand down to the bottom and was able to hitchhike the last 4 to the truck.

This years bone in Mule Deer plus camp, close to 6 miles and a couple thousand down. On a closed rd so not horrible. I did try to cut a fat hog between switchbacks dropping down a steep face, 2nd worst idea of the day.  :chuckle:

No pictures, who would have thought to take a picture packing out. I don't even remember having a camera for so many years.
Anyway, a story of my initiation into elk hunting.
I must have been 13 but maybe 14. My Dads hunting partner, his son, my Dad and and I were hunting on the Kalalock. Most of it had never been logged at the time so it was a ways between roads. My Dads partner and his son killed two spikes on a Sunday. Of course they had to be back to work Monday so there was a big rush. We skinned those elk out and cut them in half and loaded them on the packboards. It seemed farther but thinking back it was probably close to a mile. Down a ridge to the creek and down the creek bottoms with that sucking mud. I fell behind and about 500 feet short of the road you had to cross a log jam to cross the creek. Dad came back and took my pack the rest f the way.
We never weighed any of the packs but I do know my dad packed out a buck in one piece that was entered in a big buck contest that they weighed 188.
It seemed like then it was SOP if an elk was a spike or a rag horn it gt cut in half. A bigger bull would get quartered. Only thing I ever weighed was a cougar I packed out that weighed 149.
I think back on my Dad. He was pretty tough. I saw him pack out a half elk many times and you probably think he was a big guy. He went about 165.

Not an overnight trip, but this is how I get my WA and ID deer out to the road every year.  Don't know how many more years this will go on...   Pack is a Cabelas pack frame.  Lashing material is 30' of 550 parachute cord.

In the long run you save a lot of wear and tear on your body if you quarter it or bone it out. I know my Dad used to pack whole deer and goats out by making a pack out of them before they had the decent pack boards that weren't just a USFS pack board. I guess its just lack of experience. :dunno:

I remember we always used to gut and drag our deer out but now, unless its close to the road AND downhill, I always do the gutless quarter method

Good question-  for me, it is just quicker to get the whole thing on my back and get it to the truck, if it is less than a mile or so, which is typical here in the Palouse. I also like to hang my deer whole for the aging period.  I prefer to skin the animal while it is hanging as well.

If it were more of a backcountry hunt, of course I'd quarter or bone out the meat!

I suppose the pictures can look "epic", etc., but not the reason I do it!  And I have used all the different methods multiple times, so I guess that I've settled on the "whole pack-out" method as relatively efficient for "front-country" hunts. There have been a few bucks, like my 2018 Idaho whitetail, which were large enough where I skinned out the hindquarters, packed out the back half, and then returned for the front half of the deer.

Anyway, some impressive photos on this thread!

Similar for me.  If it is a reasonable sized animal and I am only a mile out or less i will just gut it and haul it to the truck where i can get it hung and skinned easier and in a cleaner environment.

Has nothing to do with wanting a photo op!

Does the pic do the weight justice?

This is when I drew a bison tag in Montana I hired a packer, this is the best $600 I have spent. I harvested the bull 5 miles from the trailhead

That looks like an epic adventure!

On the deer or bison?
Title: Re: Letís see ur heavy pack out pics

On the deer, sometimes pics can be deceiving. Guessing I would say pack weight 30 lbs.

...

This will show the weight a little better.

The hind quarters were 185lbs a piece. I felt bad for that mule that hauled them out

Half of a boned out mature buck (meaning 4-6 years old) in October will be 55-60 lbs, spotting scope tripod 7, rifle 11, deer head 6-8 lbs.

This is from my shop before I moved three years ago.

I have harvested some real nice bucks since then. Itís also missing a Canada moose, an Alaskan moose, and my bighorn sheep. They are all still at the taxidermist.

One man's heavy is another's not-so-much. I'm not old OLD, but there's more in the rearview mirror than there is looking forward on life's road. My sons are all grown and have their own families and I usually hunt with them, but last fall I went elk hunting solo. During the packout I swore I'd never go solo again, but when the last load hit the dirt back at the truck, I felt kind of proud of myself and thought maybe one more time. (But I'd gladly share the load too.)

Maybe I get a new knee I can pack heavy again, but it's a bear going down hill, absolute agony. (It's in the works)

My younger bro shames me on packouts, he's not built like linebacker so it oughta be me carrying huge loads.

This is him, a quarter and a head, it was heavy.

Put it on a stump so you can stand up heavy.

I was following and took the pick with a front shoulder and the backstraps bag, about half his load. (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210317/bdd5b05c7e883272453132628f7fbb7c.jpg)

Ya, he's got a KUIU pro pack now so that pack limitation won't be such a factor going forward. His pack wasn't great for meathauling - frameless

I had a terrible pack, badlands something.

I'll be rocking an EXO K3 next year.

theres endless trolling and hate that goes on around here anymore. How is anyone supposed to know for sure that was a joke? No smiley face emoji, or other sign of humor that accompanied that post  :dunno:

And for the record, I assumed it was a joke hence my own comment poking fun at my own intelligence followed by the laughing guy emoji, which is a testament to how unsensitive I am because if you knew half of the hate, whisperings, and pm's I got over that bull it would blow your mind. Ive photoshopped that bull, killed him in the wrong unit, shot him with a rifle, shot him at night, shot him at night in the wrong unit, used drones to find him, etc, etc, etc. Only one I haven't heard yet is I killed him on Mars.  Still waiting for that one to come around  :chuckle:

I have been a lurker for a long time and post when I want to but like Karl said. For whatever reason there is alot of hate for someone to come out more successful on a hunt than the other person was and I don't know what drives that... It's kind of like the drama on Facebook. So I do not get on Facebook... I have yet to kill a bull elk... It eats at me every year before the season. I live South of Spokane luckily though and grew up in Cheney so I have ample opportunity to harvest cows and I do. I love the meat! Antlers are just a souvenir that makes you grin till your lips crack!

I'm not sure on my bull. The head and the cape were very heavy, but not as heavy as the hind quarters. Which went 137 and 139  in the locker a week later.(The area we hunted was bone in quater's by regulation, so we could not bone them out in more manageable weights)

Packed in on horseback, packed out on back. Put this Gen 1 Kifaru pack to the test with an XL cot, Cabelas deluxe sleeping pad, couple non backcountry sleeping bags to go along with all the other normal things including the last load of elk. Well over 100#.  All that was left was the wall tent and wood cutting supplies.  Ranks up with one of the worst 4+ mile pack outs over and up a couple valleys and definitely ranks #1 of the stupidest.......at least my buddy packed my bow :chuckle:

I totally agree. Problem was, we had a bad grizzly encounter close to camp earlier that day and neither of us wanted anything to do with making two trips with the last being in the dark. Good thing that Gen 1 had the camp chair and I had mule tape to help sandwich the outfitter xl cot and pad. Definitely had a pretty wide stance this time picking through the brush had we encountered another grizz :chuckle:

It was a pretty epic hunt. Backcountry Idaho, hunting out of the wall tent. I was 3-4 miles from camp when I shot this bull on our first day. I got back well after dark with the first load. The next day on my way in to get another load of elk meat I shot a good 4x4 mule deer. Needless to say, I spent the next few days packing meat. And loving every minute of it!
