Didnt know where to put this. Figured it goes here.
Becoming a chain saw addict and figured I wasn’t the only guy in the state. Lest see those saws. Been porting saws for few months and have really enjoyed playing with all these saws.
One of my favorites

Not really a picture of the saw but cutting burning hazard trees is a good time to have a good running saw.
-
Looking for an 880 or 090!

I got 2 right now both ported and fresh rebuild. Love tho 044. At least in my area the 044 is an iconic saw. Light and plenty of power.

im wanting an 880! The 090 is a beast but heavy

Shoulda took a video of the hazard cottonwood trees I felled, rotten out in the middle and huge.
One exploded, I knew it was ready to go but impossible to predict, got it down to where just a nip with the bar and she came straight down like how they implode skyscrapers into themselves.
That one had me sweating a bit.
Husky 572 xp got the job done.

ya that’s scary right there. I always watch the color of my chips. Gets hairy when you see the dark rotten chips!

Burnt wood is hard on chain, I use a round filed chain and cut so the chain blows the abrasives away from the wood rather than drag it through, which means your doing some plunge cuts.

i like plunge cuts for all the caution trees. Unless there is obstacles and then I want wedges

I got a few... Still 044, 440 magnum, ms310 (x2), 029,
jonsered *(4 sale/trade) 670 super or champ? Don’t remember now.
Husky 372xp was one of my favorite saws.

I’ve been a stihl guy my whole life but those huskies are easy to work on and I love the ?72’s. Would love to find a 3120

I use saws. A lot. All day.
For most of my work, I use a 661, modded. Or a modded 461. I've had opportunity to run the new 462 and 500.
Mostly use a 36" and a 42" inch bar.
I really love 660's. Obviously, I am a Stihl guy. But I do appreciate the size of the husky grip.
Nothing like dawging into some old growth timber, dumping a fat hooter spruce and making nice clean bucks on huge wood.
-
A "man's" saw! Mac 125
Only thing better, Sthil 75 or an O90
-
I do have a special spot in my heart for mac’s. Just sold a sweet lil 610 to a friend not long ago

those are great saws. Good power to weight ratio. I may pick up a few 038 mags this week

The 661 has a 660 carb. Exhaust and intake port work. West coast saws muffler. And I change sprockets to the work I'm doing. I didn't do this work. I've never hopped a saw up myself.
If you're on facecrook , look up Jason Egan and Joe Johnson.
Those two guys are fantastic and really talentrd.
-
I only have 2 but I want them all.
I bought a brand new never touched wood MS390 off Craigslist years ago for $308. This 40 somethimg guy and his mom were sold way to much saw. They got home and started it. It ate the grass and they freaked out and I think were to embarrassed to go back to the store. Wouldn't have been my 1st choice for saw but it was listed for $350 and was probably close to $600 new.
I bought an 021 for $40 on Craigslist not running. The gentleman said it ran the last time he started it years ago but it sat for a number of years. I was the 1st one to leave a message on his machine. I left work after he called me back and picked it up. Bought some new fuel and spark plug on the way back to work. Change the plug and fuel. Sprayed the card with cleaner and cleaned the spark arrestor and it fired up on the 3rd pull. Sold the saw for $150 to a customer 10 years later and bought a ms250 off offerup for $125 because I thought I wanted something just a bit bigger for my small saw. Not sure I did the right thing but it runs good and cuts well.
I think I'd like a 361 or 461.
And a new 500i

love my 361. Like cutting with a lightsaber. We call the 361 the firewood king
-
I wish my old husky 365 would die so I could get something new and shiny. Run a skiptooth comp chain 28” and it just keeps cutting even after banging around in the weather in truck bed for like 20 hunting seasons.
-
I'm going to muffler mod the 390 here pretty soon.

My 30 year old Husky 51. Cut lots of hardwood trees back east and now gets about 20 minutes of work a year out here. Love this saw and the memories of cutting firewood on our wood lot back east with my dad and grandfather. Hope it never dies.
(I know the chain is loose. It’s my crappy chain I had on because I was cutting near the dirt)
-
Stihl vs Husqvarna is it a Ford Vs Chevy type situation? Never owned or ran a Husqvarna.
-
They both can be great... I’ve always owned stihls but ran husky Logging and in the landing.
-
I've had Stihls and they are good but I prefer Huskies or Jonsered because I find them easier to work on.
-
Husky is faster. Has outboard clutch. They blow up faster in my opinion. Not as sturdy as a Stihl, I think.
Stihl has more low end, more stump power. Better dealer network and parts availability.
-
I just put a big bore kit on my 044. It also has an ms 460 rescue carb on it. Best advise I can give out is jet your carb bigger. Doesnt matter if its stihl or Husqvarna. The newer saws are regulated by the epa. Which means they run lean from the factory. Make them rip. Port out the muffler. Try to keep the exhaust screen please. We don't need fires. My ms 210 cuts like a ms 290. And yes I am certified and work for a dealer.
-
I mostly cut a little firewood anymore. Notched a lot of stumps in my day. First saw I ever had on the backend was a Mac, God knows what the number was. Before that it was an axe.
-

i would agree the husqvarna and jonesred are easy to work on. All great saws and imo it really just comes down to which brand has the best support in your area.
Those wanting to do muffler mods I’d recommend 70% of the exhaust port size for muffler exit port. Then you’ll also need to riches up both high and low jets. May have to remove the limiter caps but it definitely wakes the saw up
-
My husky is back in the shop, they had it for 4 weeks, replaced the ignition coil or what ever its called. Took it home and tried to cut up a tree, wouldn't run at high end. Took it back and its been 2 weeks now, haven't heard a word. I've had it for about 6-8 years and this is the first time it's let me down.
-
I enjoy working with and on chainsaws too. Worked for a residential tree removal company for a few years. Did repairs on company saws and my own. Ran Stihl MS-192's up to MS-880 for the company. Usually 361's and 440's.
I used to have a couple Jonsered 670's. One stock and one was "improved" by a previous owner and ran really well. I sold those and transitioned to stihl saws. I liked the 670's but they were a bit heavy imo.
I built a ms-660 clone using a farmertec parts kit. Saw runs great. Sold it to a friend who uses it for his firewood business.
Built a couple ms-440 clones from farmertec parts kits. One is a standard 440. The other has a 460 big bore piston and cylinder on it. I tried my hand at some porting on that one.
Also have a couple smaller stock Stihl saws. 024 and ms362.
Even after years of doing it, it's still fun to squeeze the trigger and make chips fly!
-
Those blue farmertec saws can be a great deal once you tbro in some hiway or OEM internals
-
Left my truck box unlocked and got my Stihl lifted :bash:
I was gifted a 670 after that happened, I really like it. It is a bit heavy but it's been a great saw so far.
-

I agree. I have all farmertec internals in them so far. The 440's aren't balanced very well and vibrate pretty bad. The 660 was pretty smooth with all farmertec parts.

I looked into these quite a bit. You can get the "full part kits" for about $170 (for a MS460) shipped per saw and they take about 3-4 hours total to put together. If you like projects and have a few so if one goes down on you they are not a bad idea.
That being said I went the other way due to the reliability,. The two saws that I am currently using are a OEM MS271, and MS461. I just replaced my MS390 with the MS461 this year and it is a world of a different saw. I really like both my saws for what they are, the 271 is strictly for prepping trees to get pulled out and hiking up the hillsides. The MS461 lives in the truck and does all the work as soon as I get the logs onto the road (or freeing my pinched 271).
Hot tip for all those that cut. One of the best tools you can have is a dental pick. They rock for cleaning your bar and oiler hole. I clean mine every time I add gas and bar oil.
-
Had a 'Northern' buddy in the 80's rockin' a big Jonsered. Sounded like a dirtbike firing up! That thing was a beast! It was around 110cc. 6.9 ci if I remember correctly?

The benefits of having a Bro in law who loves to buy stuff, but not use it. Just gifted me an 036 that's never seen wood.
-
That's the cleanest saw I've ever seen. Its beautiful!
-
I hope to remedy that soon. A clean chainsaw is like a clean truck, or a pair of boots.
-
Forget everything I've ever said about you behind your back.
Sold I'll take it.
Just kidding about the talking being your back part lol. Sometimes I type just to make myself laugh.
-
Ha. It's OK. I can take it, and I'm certain I deserve it! My wife assumed I'd sell my 270, because why would I need 2.
Good grief.
Anyhow. Love this thread. Not a huge saw guy, but I love a good hot rod, no matter the form!
-
That saw is clean!! Wow
-
Sell you're 270, ha. What is she, new? I think you need a third, maybe a small limber.
-
I just did muffler port and tune on my MS250. It runs like a little beast. Ripped through a 13" Alder log.

Spent 6 years on a hotshot fire crew running a saw. MS 460 magnum with 32" bar. Probably ran a few thousands tanks of gas over that time frame. Hardest work I've ever done. End of the day you'd have what we called " the claw". your hand we be locked/cramped up like you were still holding onto the bar long after shift was over. Tipped over a few giants in southwest Oregon and Northern cali, probably should have just walked away from a few of those but it always worked out. Good memories.

pretty much same saw except the 572 is choked up with more epa crap. 372 is a great saw and with a little muffler work and 272 coil and 6 degrees of timing advance they pull hard.

Those 064’s where great saws!
-
Here's my 044 being put to work.
And yes that's me. Cutting trees in my driveway.
I've had that saw at least 12 years ,bought it brand new.
My wife ran the camera, she says I need to buy a new saw.
The saw is getting a little tired .But it has cut many loads of firewood.
That shed in the background is where those trees where.
Had to cut them ,they where dead, and wife wanted shed.
-
love saws, bought built and sold thousands. My buddy and I run a small side buisness. I imported falling saws like Husky 394, 2101's, stihl 066 from Vancouver Island connection I had.

Stihl, MS461, with a 32" Stihl Light bar on it, is what I use for wood cutting and general use around my place. My best friend, who has been an Gypo logger all his life built it for me a couple years ago. Absolutely love it!
-
I love chainsaws. My primary cutters are an ms 210 with a modded muffler and carb. And a 044 with a big bore kit and ms 460 carb.

I recently picked up a chain grinder. I love it and it’s so much faster. I still enjoy filing in the field but the grinder is great and much faster for me.
-
I have a 362c I love it but the other day it just stopped suddenly. Went to check the spark plug wire and the whole plug came out with the wire, must have loosened up while running and then ate the threads up. Anyone had this happen? I bought it new a few years ago. I’m frustrated I let it happen
-
Call em in-
It really depends on what job I'm doing.
When I'm dumping timber, I like a chisel grind. It cuts incredibly fast and is very durable in its ability to keep a good fast working edge. Falling timber, I want all the speed I can get. Same thing for bucking, especially old growth like what I work in.
Buuut, a round file does give you smoothness, provided you know how to file. It also performs better in dirty, muddy or rock shot wood. And it's also easier to correct and fix if you bugger the tooth up. For firewood, a man is better off with a round file.
3/8's- .404? - seems like three eighths wanders a little bit in the big wood. .404 last long, tough, fat kerf, easier to maintain. 3/8's, faster.
For limbing and general firewood cutting, most folks will benefit from full compliment chains. So much smoother, less vibration and cleans the kerf really nicely.
Biggest pet peeve - Too many people take too much off the drags too soon, too often, too hard ect.
Take it easy on those drags!!!(rakers)
