Figured it was time to get the new 2021 turkey thread started.
Good luck to all the youth hunters and let’s see some pics!
-
My 14 year old got his first two birds ever this morning.
-
Congrats to the young man! That’s the good stuff!!

That’s fantastic congrats to him!

Daughters Tom yesterday. Saturday was a bust dealing with guys teaching their kids the bail out and run method. Even if somebody is hunting them, but that’s hunting feel free to hunt land. On the way home went to a little more out of the way spot and found 6 Toms and a bunch of jakes and hens. After an hour we had three of them in range and she harvested a nice longbeard.

They'll have the Turkey bird itch come every April until the day they die

Easter Sunday was a great day to be in the woods. Avery filled her two tags on Sunday. At 10 years old, she’s already killed 6 redheads in her first three years of hunting. This year was a little different as it actually took two shots to kill the two gobblers. The last two years she has filled both tags with one shot. As most dads of daughters can attest to, the way your daughter looks at you melts your heart. Love every minute I get to spend with her and can’t wait for our next adventure together. Now it’s brother’s turn!

The log picture is money. That should be entered for the turkey pamphlet next year.

Congrats to all the youth hunters!
-
Little Pathfinder's submission from youth season. Birds were smarter than usual. Lots of toms hanging out at 60 yards and not closing the deal. Pretty cool way to witness Easter Sunrise.
Finally got a pair of toms to cooperate on Sunday evening.
Tied for his largest bird with the one he killed two years ago with a 10" beard. Longest spurs though at 1 1/8".
-
Awesome, Pathfinder! Thanks for sharing.

Got one with the .410 this morning at 43yds! Love chasing mountain merriams! (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210415/df76887bd24a825f91fafb1f6aecf98b.jpg)

Even we old guys can still find a dumb one. Lot of nice Toms around this year
-
Came off the roost straight for me. Quick morning.

Looks like the TSS loads took care of business. Congrats.

Got my first one this morning! What a rush, I called him in by copying a hen that was with him word for word (thank god it was the mouth call and not complex) until I saw him and then stopped. He came into the hen decoy and that was that. 23 paces away. Not sure if I could've scripted it any better. The ol' SP-10 with an Indian creek choke and Winchester Double X, #5's did the trick! And not one pellet in the breast, lucky or not, I am very happy with myself. 8" beard and 1-1/8" spurs.
-
Holy spurs!
-
Number one this morning came behind me. Acting skiddish. Had my wife and a army vet 10 yards in front of me. He wasn't heading towards them so waited for him to get behind a tree and swing enough to get a shot. Dropped him 30 feet. 9.5" beard nubs for spurs. Heavy big bird.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210416/5bd37bb473d3b287da04bfe8d2dabd0d.jpg)

-
First bird of the season was taken at 5:30pm at 30yds. He didn’t make a sound coming in. My new Benelli Super Vinci dropped him with 3.5” Winchester Long Beards out of a long beard choke. Only about a 7” beard and nubs for spurs.

Not this time around. After I shot that bird they totally changed. Didn't come back to the roost. This morning I had 2 new hunters and watched them on a roost and of course flew off opposite direction. Once they hit the ground. They tightened up and not a peep. I was on property thay hasn't been hunted. Yesterday evening played around with them but wouldn't come into anything. They do seem to be still in decent sized flocks. The group I had going yesterday evening was at least 30 plus birds with lots of toms and jakes.

Thanks, she's very excited.
Bird ran about 100 yards after a bit of a low shot, then died in some bushes where she couldn't see it, she thought she missed! but I could see it ran off a bit sideways looking hit.
herd it flopping and dug it out the bushes, she was jumping up and down with excitement.

Awesome looking birds everyone. Official measurements of my bird. 9"beard. 25 lbs and 1/16" nubs for spurs. Don't forget to register your birds online at NWTF.org. It is all done online now. You have to be a memeber to register and registration fee is $15. https://www.nwtf.org/hunt/records. If your stats are good you will need a witness. They have to be a member to. PM me of you need one. Also first time turkeys get that first turkey certificate through WDFW https://fishhunt.dfw.wa.gov/Home/TurkeySlam

First archery turkeys for me and my buddy this weekend.
-
Thought Little Pathfinder and I were going to double. The whole flock came in (about 30 birds). Came from behind us and we weren't ready. We had two good toms at 20yds, but when we raised our shotguns, they all spooked. I pounded mine in the back of the head, but LP couldn't get a clear shot. Was a great weekend though. I think he was as happy for me to get that bird as he was to kill his last week
9" beard, 1" spurs.

Nice work!

Knocked this one down Saturday morning

Late post, but go this one about 25 minutes into opening morning in Kittitas. 9.5" beard, 3/4" spurs. HEAVY on the walk out! First public bird for me!

My brother is an army veteran and hasn't ever been turkey hunting before. Opening weekend we were able to get him his first bird! He was so excited and i couldn't be more stoked for him...the bird came in gobbling the whole way. Then I picked up a Jake on the way out. Awesome Day

My dad and I got a few to play the game last week. Both mature Toms, about 2.5 years old by my guess. We struggled to get the birds talking or coming to our calls. We heard that the opening weekend was hit pretty hard by hunters and by the time we got out hunting they were all a bit call shy. Still, we got the first one to come in to our decoys set up by their roost tree. The second one came to our calls at mid-day, once his hens had left him.
Dad's bird was full of COB from a nearby farm. Should eat good.
Mine is the first Tom I have tagged with a double beard, although you cannot see that in the picture. One beard is 9in long, the second was only about 2in long.

-
My wife got her central Washington turkey on opening day. I set up the decoys so it looked like the Tom was breeding the hen. called him in to 15 yards before she put him down.
And I called mine in last weekend to the same set up. But had three toms come in at once bunched up and could only get a shot at one when the other two started to attack my Tom decoy

My Dad and I chased turkey from May 2nd to the 5th. We got up every morning at 0330 and went to bed at 2200 each night with some good naps in between. My Dad only has one good sit a day in him so we focus on trying to get one off the roost while he was fresh. We hunted every evening just up the road from camp on public land. I managed to score turkey number one on the 3rd, turkey number two on the 4th, and my Dad shot his first ever spring tom on the morning of the 5th! We broke camp and headed home on the 5th which was about as long as my Dad was able to last with me riding him hard to get a turkey.
First turkey was 16.11 lbs with and 8 inch beard and just under 3/4 spurs.
Second was 19.30 lbs, 8 inch beard and just under 1 inch spurs.
My Dad shot a 20.17 lb turkey, with an 8 1/2 inch beard and just under 1 inch spurs.
The last few trips with my Dad have been rough on him and each one could have been his last. I left him home last year under Doctors orders due to his health. He managed to lose over 20 lbs and check all the other boxes to make the long drive and he hunted as hard as he could, including sitting on the ground in the cold for over an hour the last morning so his chair wouldn't create a wide profile and give away his position. We've been gunning to get him a big tom for over a decade and he's already talking about the fall so he can notch his second tag. We had a great time and got to chat with some other hunters while we were scooting around. Good Luck to everyone!
-
@TheStovePipeKid
That is awesome! Sounds like a great trip with your dad and one that you will always look back on fondly! Making memories!!
I'm headed over Monday for my hunt. I have a full week and hope I can at least find some birds to be around. We had a pretty tough youth season and really didn't get on any birds to even be able to hunt.
-
Did a quick bonsai trip up north Saturday afternoon to get my brother his first Tom. After a swing and a miss on a bird I called in early just off the roost my brother was able to get this tom 30 minutes before we had to head towards home.

Got one opening morning and took me over a month to fill that second tag. Saw more folks in the woods than I think I've ever seen. Not super convenient but really good to see more folks getting into it! Note: The two birds in the one photo are a double with my buddy and I from the opener.

My 1st 2021 Rio Tom taken in the Blue Mountains. And my 2nd 2021 Tom was a Merriams out of Unit 121. Both birds came in hot. Had the Merriams at 8 yards in a stare down. Had to wait for him to turn so I could raise my fun to shoot him at between 10 or 12 yards as he was leaving. Came straight at my blind instead of the decoys. Pretty exciting to have one that close. Got the Rio right after fly down (right over my head) as he came back to my decoys and following a hen.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210605/20f2997e20c308d2b796e823a95b0a21.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210605/889f21904a63682420e9683568a06660.jpg)
