Title: Upgrade from Swarovski SLC to EL
Post by: huntandjeep on April 06, 2021, 05:26:11 PM
Is it worth it ? I love my 10x42  Slc's just wondering if it would be worth it to sell and grab a newer set of EL 10x42s..

How old are they? Mine were pre HD and pre swarovision and it was definitely worth the upgrade for me. Take yours into a sportsmans or somewhere that sells them and compare side by side.

Think I bought them in 2010/11 . I've compared them to my buddies 5 year old  EL range alot . In my eyes his has a reddish tint to them . Not sure if that's just because they are  the Rangefinder model , or if all ELs will look that way to me . .

I got els for myself and slcís for my wife. I had to get another set of elís because she kept asking for mine. So yes there is a difference. We love the Elís.

Iíve always heard they are the same glass? Heard the only difference is EL means, extra light, as in less weight?? Either way, every eye is different, I tried multiple brands, elís, slcís, and my eyes just seemed to love the slcís.  The money was a factor, but honestly, my eyes just felt better looking through the slcís.

ELs are 2 ounces heavier.

Consider upgrading from SLC to Swarovski NL Pure's instead, or you might wish you did in a couple years.

"The Swarovski NL Pure Binocular features the largest field of view to date (477 ft @ 1,000yds) depending on the model Ė revolutionizes the viewing experience. Thanks to this extraordinarily wide field of view with barely perceptible edges, the NL Pure provides a very natural observation experience that allows you to immerse yourself in what you see. It is available in 8x42, 10x42, and 12x42 variations."

Now if they would just add rangefinding.......

Everyone's eyes are different.  The EL for me was crisper, in all light and color contrast was higher, but i also have red and green deficiency so that could be a factor. SLC actually had a slight edge in low light brightness,  but my animal spotting ability was just flat better with the el.

The EL is actually heavier, but the bridged riser is IMO more comfortable, i dont notice the weight on my chest rig.

I do agree with magnum, if i was looking for upgrade i would look hard at Pures. Let me know if you would like to purchase some used ELs  :chuckle:

O trust me  I've considered the NL  Pures  :chuckle: . That's a tough pill to swallow though.  The used market isn't as abundant with the Pures as the ELs.

Thereís a reason for that....

But are the new NL Pure $600-$700 better than the EL's?

There's a pretty good discussion about the EL vs NL over on another forum and this seems to be the consensus, the NL's are a little better but are they noticeably better or 6-700 bucks better....   :dunno:

Iíve had this discussion several times over the past month since I bought the new EL Range TA and have gotten crap from buddies for not buying the Pures.  Bottom line is, when you get into the elite alpha glass, itís all good and you arenít gonna spot any more critters going from one to the other.

Iím not replacing my 15x56 with the 12x Pures, either.   I played this game when the 12x50 ELís came out.  Packed both 12xís and 15xís for a year.  You are just replacing the horsepower of the 15x.  Sold the 12xís.

Thatís how I really feel!   :chuckle:

See this is why I asked . I have absolutely no complaints with my SLCs . They have never let me down , I've spotted just as many animals with my SLCs and non HD Swaro spotter as my buddy with his ELs and HD Swaro spotter . Only reason I'm contemplating Buying ELs is because mine are 12 years old and I like new things .  :chuckle: . I could buy a pair if Pures tomorrow if they would find me $900 more worth of animals . I'm sure they are nice just cant justify the price jump .

I just went through this a few weeks ago. I was debating the El, El range ta and the pures. I ended up getting the10x42 el and am more than happy with them. I got the els for just under $2k new at the sportsman show. So with that extra $1k I'll spend a week in idaho in Nov. No Brainer for me   :chuckle:

I love my 15x56 slc's for in the vehicle or sitting and glassing, but I wanted a pair of lighter 10x for hiking. I was going to get another swaro but one of my guides bought Leika's and looking through them sold me, I got the Leica Geovid HD-B 3000 10x42 Rangefinding Binocular, love these even more than the Swaros and I no longer have to pack a rangefinder, win/win. Check them out if you get a chance!

I know your asking about els but If you can get out and spend a couple days with the pures I would do it...yes they cost 1k more...yes at 1st glimpse in the store they are marginally better

But in the field...they are kings...my 10 pures outperformed my b518s at distance..and often when going from the 10s to the 25x stx it's amazing how little difference there is some how...idk how to even explain it...obviously that sounds crazy but it's just my thoughts...if the pures or els get you back to work one or two days sooner they pay for themselves in short order...depending on how much you hunt that could add up fast

Just some thoughts

For me the slcís have always been more comfortable on my chest, in my hands and on my eyes but thatís just me. I am however itching to try the pures. IMO if you are in the market for high end glass donít worry about a negligible price difference between brands/models you are already pot committed, if $500-1000 extra is gunna hurt you probably shouldnít be spending that kind of money on binos in the first place :chuckle:

I decided to upgrade from my SLC to the el. After some testing. I kept my SLC and sold the el. Not impressed
