Title: Bearpaw Season - Spring 2021
Post by: bearpaw on April 20, 2021, 10:06:32 AM
Spring is here, time for new updates. Itís been a crazy busy year thus far, we are remodeling our place in Idaho so that we have nicer accommodations. Doing all of the work ourselves so thatís the reason I havenít been online much. The house had a flat roof and was built in 1936, we tore off the old front entry, built a larger front entry, added a pitch roof, and we are remodeling the upstairrs. (I had already remodeled the downstairs a few years ago). Itís been interesting working between hunts and between snow and rain storms.

Took a break from interior remodeling and give the barn a remodel, it was/is a challenge to make an old leaning Barn square again! Is turkey season ever coming?

Sorry about the phone posting some of the photos upside down, sometime I'll try to straighten them out, just wanted to provide a quick update on what we've been up to so far this year.

In between all the remodeling and hunting Iíve managed to get most of my food plots in.  Too funny, while I was still plowing this one two hens were picking worms and a tom is following them!

Yeah we got a good start on the birds, still no bear sign though, we've got a lot of our baits out in Idaho already and none are getting any bear yet. This warm weather should get them out soon though?

Ian hunted these same birds all day, he stuck with it, they watch these birds bed down this afternoon, waited them out until they came out for the evening feed, And then nailed this Tom. After the Tom dropped another Tom came over and started mounting this Tom, They had to scare the other Tom away before he messed up the downed bird.  :chuckle:

Seth and Joe from Virginia are on one of our unguided hunts. We provide lodging, meals, and directions where they should hunt. They nailed a couple of nice toms this morning, the first morning of their hunt. They are really enjoying the beauty and game diversity of northeast Washington. Tonight Joe tagged his second bird and they roosted 8 toms for Seth to go after in the morning. Congrats guys!

Seth is back with his 2nd bird, I'll add a photo to this post when I get it. They are napping right now, Joe's plane arrived very late in Spokane and they were in the AM getting to our place yesterday morning before going hunting, they only had an hour of sleep before yesterday's hunt.

Brian is a very successful turkey hunter but was wanting his wife Polly to get her first bird. They came on our one bird hunt, Brian waited for Polly to get her first bird and then he hammered a nice tom for himself. Awesome! He said next year he might bring a couple of the grandkids, we hope to see you next year!

This is possibly the best turkey hunting season I've seen, all our hunters have had opportunities at mature toms thus far!  :IBCOOL:

We are booked full for Idaho spring bear hunts, I don't think I have any WA spring bear hunts planned, this year I've had more interest in my spring bear maps for WA, we do have quite a few turkey hunters for WA this spring.

This surprises me a bit.....I can vouge for Dale and Bearpaw outfitters guides on their spring bear hunts in the NE.  I have been part of 3 different hunts and all three went home with bears.....not to mention the other hunters in camp that also whacked bears while we were there.  Wonder if you will get some who decide last minute when the figure out how hard it is to find the little buggers in that thick brushy country.

Nice birds as usual Dale.

David is originally from Mexico, he has hunted all over Mexico and the US, we had some good conversations about his experiences here in the US and in Mexico. He is well versed in what areas in Mexico you have to be careful and what areas are much safer.

The next morning was a little slow but we decided to hunt the same area in the afternoon, we had heard birds in the morning. Finally in mid afternoon he connected with his second Washingron bird, an even better bird than the first. Well done David!í

Loren from North Dakota was our other bear hunter this week, he stalked this color phase boar with guide Branden on the third day of his hunt, great job guys!

FYI: This bear measured 6'3" but he is pretty skinny, you get the hide off of some of these spring bear and their isn't much there, no wonder some of them die in their dens on long hard winters, this winter was an easy one and there were lots of huckleberries last fall but this bear is still pretty skinny. When you butcher a spring bear there isn't much fat to trim!

Chase with his mountain top MerriamĎs taken in Washington state. We heard this gobbler on the roost on top of a mountain and raced toward him, he was a good bit away and we needed to close the distance fast, when we got close he came off the roost but went silent, we moved onward carefully and after another 1/4 mile I luckily spotted him in the trees, he displayed, I called, he stuck his head up and Chase hammered him, well done Chase! After the shot he rolled about 40 yards downhill, we found him and got some good photos, Chase told me he just about passed out coming up the mountain with his face mask on, we both had a good sweat going on!  :chuckle:

This morning Bubba notched his first tag on a bird from one of our blinds while I had Chase after the mountaintop gobbler. This afternoon Bubba and I got onto another tom, we saw him at 80 yards but the tom went out around us, a hen came by at 5 yards, quite a bit of time passed and then suddenly this tom showed up on our left at 25 yards, I nudged Bubbas knee and pointed one finger toward the tom, I made a quick noise, the tom raised his head and Bubba put the hammer down! Another fun hunt!

Thomas from South Carolina had a super exciting hunt this morning, the gobbler answered from a incredible distance and started coming their way, they seen him coming from way out, the closer he got the more he gobbled and the faster he came, the last little distance the tom was running straight at Thomas who pulled up and pasted the tom at about 15 yards! Way to get it done Thomas!

Tripp from South Carolina finished off our highly successful Saturday of turkey hunting with his first turkey ever! We went out for an evening hunt and I made two series of extra loud yelps and we listened, there was a gobble about 500-600 yards up on a big southern exposure hillside. I waited for about 10-15 minutes and the bird gobbled again but a little closer so I gave him two more series of loud yelps and waited. Tripp spotted him coming about 450 yards out, at about 400 yards he gobbled again, I didnít answer, I waited till he got to about 350 yards and gobbled again, I gave him the most sensual pleading yelps I could muster and then shut up. We watched him pick his way straight toward us, my heart was pounding, I was sure Tripís heart was pounding, I wanted to call again but resisted the temptation, the bird continued to pick his way toward us, straight toward us. He stopped and looked numerous times but then he would start coming toward us again, by now he is nearly within range, I canít see a beard, heís big, has a big white noggin, looks like a big tom, but I canít see a dang beard at all! My heart is racing, Trippís heart is racing, the bird is coming closer, I knew Tripp did not want a jake for his first bird but I was 98% this was a big tom with no beard, so at 30ish yards I gave him my finger signal to take him, Trip pulled up and smoked him, knocked him a floppin! I whispered to be quiet in case another bird was coming in silent, weíll wait a few minutes quietly. Then I whispered that I had not seen a beard but I was 98% certain it was a mature bird with no beard, I could see the worry come across his face, I reassured him I wouldnít have let him shoot unless I thought it was a mature bird, not sure how convincing I really was? Pretty quick I called it and we went to pick up the bird, as we approached I saw Spurs, what a relief that was! LOL

We took a few pics where he lay and then I picked him up and we headdd back to the truck, we got more photos along the way and exchanged comments about how exciting it was for both of us! Nice shot Trip, I love it when a plan comes together.

I am still amazed at how close these birds can pinpoint your position from a long distance, the bird walked straight to us and the last time I called was at about 350 yards!

I had a situation several years back. Called in a big old Tom that had no beard. We were in a ground blind. My son at the time was 10. He was up and ready to shoot. I could not see a beard and knew it was a mature Tom. Not seeing the visible beard we did not take the bird. As the regs state visible beard. Is there an exception?

I read the law as ďmale turkeys AND turkeys with visible beardsĒ.  I would interpret that as any male turkeys and hens with visible beards.

The wording changed a while back. I was unaware too earlier this year. It used to read birds with visible birds. A few years back, the most dominant bird in this flock we were watching had no beard. We figured he must have stepped on it too many times. :chuckle:

How do them southern boys like our Mountain bids?  Do they think the Gobblers sound further away than they are, like I did when I first moved out West?

They say the birds are higher pitched and hard for them to judge how far away with the terrain variations, sometimes further away and sometimes closer.

We had a gobbler at 30ish yards this morning, just right there in the brush in front of us, I was already mentally notching the tag, but somehow he just didn't present a shot, that was so close, I knew it was going to happen and so did my hunter, somehow that bird managed to escape us!

Dave from Georgia was the last of these guys to tag out, we set up for an evening hunt, the smaller tom in the photo came by on our left, we could see a good beard on the bird but Dave needed to move about 5 feet in order to get a clear shot but a hen came from the right only 12 feet from us, we didnít dare even blink, finally the hen circled around and moving away, I called and the tom started moving toward us more, but the hen was now moving away and of course the tom followed her, we didnít quite get a shot but sat tight and waited a while. I finally called several times again and before too long we saw probably the same tom again on the left, he started to angle away, I called he picked his head up, just as I thought Dave was going to shoot he dropped his head and walked about 5 yards away, I called a couple times finally he picked his head up again and Dave hammered him. I motioned to Dave for us to sit tight, I knew there were other birds in the vicinity. The bird flopped out and we let him lay, after an hour we spotted some birds at long distance moving toward their roost so we waited another 10 minutes and I said letís go, we got up slowly and carefully surveyed the area around us and spotted two more hens moving to our far left, then we spotted the big tom behind them, we waited for the birds to go out of sight and then moved about 20 yards and set up an ambush, we waited, first one hen came by, then the other hen, then the tom came, whammo, big bird down! This bigger bird had two beards, 8.5Ē and 6Ē, Dave was elated. These guys completed their one year slams on this hunt and Dave was the last of them to do it on the evening of the last day of their hunt!

The smaller bird with an 8" beard, probably a 2 year old had lost his tail, part of the fan was growing back, but part of the actual tail was missing so not all the tail feathers were growing back, I'm guessing a predator must have almost had a turkey dinner?

how much does a 7'3 bear weigh?  is that from tip of tail to tip of nose?

Yes nose to tail, there is no specific weight, but remembering back to fall bear that I have measured that were 7'+ here in Washington, they were all well over 400 pounds in the fall. I'm guessing a fat 400 pound fall bear might only weigh 250-300ish in the spring, but I don't know that for sure and it would depend on how tough of winter it was too?

This bear has a good looking noggin on him, he's a big bear but not as big as some taken in previous seasons in Idaho or Washington. I haven't seen it myself, I'm in WA doing turkey hunts, my son runs the Idaho bear hunts. The head will get green measured at the taxidermist just in case.

I decided to google weight loss in hibernation and got this, my guess was fairly close:
Quote
Weight loss during hibernation is extreme. Male black bears will typically drop between 15 and 30 percent of their body weight, while reproductive sows can lose up to 40 percent. Despite this grave weight loss, more than 90 percent of black bears survive the winter.

Brian started this big boar shortly after daylight, the bear bayed up numerous times and then would walk or run a ways, dogs finally pushed him up a small tree, Brian got there the bear was hanging onto the tree by his teeth. Heath broke his back when he shot but the bear was plenty alive, Brian let the little terrier Chewy loose who grabbed the bear, Chewy kept the bear busy until Heath caught up to put in another finishing shot. Heath said he has been on four guided hunts trying to get a bear over six feet, mission accomplished!

Thanks for the kind comments everyone, itís very much appreciate, Iím fortunate to have some very good guides working for us and itís really my son who manages that part of our hunting operation and those guides who are getting the job done. I just visited camp this morning and the guides were fueling up and I visited with the new group of hunters this week, they were excited to get going, the guides have been having a fantastic time in spite of the hard work and long hours, and the hounds are rested and ready for this weekís hunts. Rich from California with a nice blackie that he wounded at a baits, they got ďChewyĒ the Jack Russell Terrier and he tracked down and bayed up the bear until Rich could get there and finish off the bear.

Some of you guys probably remember Ruby, she was eaten by a cougar two winters ago, Chewy is her replacement, he doesnít have the same unique personality, but he is turning out to be just as effective at tracking and finding wounded game. In Idaho we are allowed to recover wounded game with blood dogs, during her life Ruby was responsible for finding many wounded game animals including a 6x6 bull elk, a trophy nontypical mule deer, whitetail deer and many wounded bear and cougar.
