Title: Increase in moose numbers?
Post by: Jingles on April 29, 2021, 07:50:08 AM
I do a lot of traveling in a couple GMU's via pickup gathering firewood and S x S for just recreation and this year was before the snow was gone, got stuck several times and had to winch out. During these travels I came across more moose poo this year than I have seen in the last decade which makes me wonder if the moose population in these GMU'S had increased significantly or the same number of moose are just all over the place would almost say saw more moose poo than deer, one area was almost like a feed lot could not go 100 yards without coming across another pile . Do have several different moose on trail cams and a couple were very nice looking bulls.

I dont know if there are more Moose, but they are definitely seeking out areas with less predators.

That's good news. Hate to see their numbers go down.

I've been seeing moose almost every year for the last six or so years in 231. Before that, it was few and far between as far as actual sightings go.

Scouting 105 for spring bear and I came across ALOT of moose scat.  More than I recall seeing in Sherman 2 years back.

Shhh, that's from all of them migrating west to 215.

They keep migrating west, most likely to evade the wolves, which in turn just follow them. End result is we are definitely seeing more moose, but I am afraid more wolves in our area is inevitable. I have seen 3 moose swim across the Columbia, headed west, in the last month from my front porch.

Moose always winter out on roads, skid trail, old logging roads ECT. So it's not super uncommon to see lots of moose poo on roads. Right after winter.

I agree Jingles, we've been seeing a lot also, seen a nice big bull last September in one of those units you were probably in. Then just a couple weeks ago seen 3 moose up north and "bear" tracks that were bigger than a dinner plate, wonder what kind of "bear" that was :bash:
