Title: Boat net storage
Post by: metlhead on June 13, 2021, 03:23:14 PM
Looking for some ideas on ways to store a salmon size landing net on the roof of my aluminum hardtop boat. I'd prefer it to lay flat, secure enough for running heavy water, and easy enough grab for shorter folks that cannot reach over the roof.

why not a vertical rod holder on the side of the hard top...that way you could utilize it while actually fishing too..
something like this

i had my big beckman in a rod holder on the side of my tower yesterday and got the piss beat out of me for a 45 mile run and it didnt budge.

Vertical ones are the way to go in my opinion, way to easy to0 snag the net on other stuff up there and whatever you mount it on and strap it with.  You would think rods and nets would fly out buy I've never had it happen or hear of anyone that did and we've gone full Dukes of Hazard a few times over the years.

Vertical 4pak on the right side for rods and you cannot get around it. Roof is the only real estate, and plenty of it.

fair.
im not trying to dismiss your original idea im just trying to figure out how the roof would work well for shorter people when actually fishing...

i could see some sort of quick grip system for storage up there when running...but that wouldnt work while fishing as youd have to 'unlatch' it so to speak.
what net do you have?  I run the big green hoop beckman with the 6 foot handle so trying to think how that would work.
Maybe if you had a net holder welded as a step off of the 4 pack, angled towards the back of the boat a bit.  issue there would be the net tangling the poles...which is also what id worry about it with it on the roof and out of sight, if it somehow got tangled on something while battling a nice king, that would be a pita.
sorry more just thinking out loud and rambling at this point.. nets are a pain to store but a dang necessity haha

I seen a canvas sleeve buttoned to a roof, not my style. I picture it laying flat on the left side, with the handle protruding back enough to grab, but out of the way of a facial centerpunch. Imagining a quick release right at the edge that anyone can use.

can you post a further back picture of your boat? or what boat is it?
what if you used something like this (not this exact one, but you get the idea)

the leverage of pushing the handle up would pop it out...now...for running, i would also add a quick fist in front or behind that further back so you could secure it down

That mop holder looks like the perfect idea. I'll pick one up and see if they work. Thanks
